"Dark & Grimy Movie-Themed Cafe in Berlin Mitte If you're looking for a place reminiscent of the smoke-filled cafés of bohemian Paris , look no further than Cafe Cinema. Sitting alongside a popular tourist route in Hackescher Markt, the small, hole-in-the-wall cafe attracts both tourists and locals. In the evenings it's a great spot for a beer and interesting conversations, and the daytime sees visitors working quietly and enjoying coffee. In summertime, the alleyway nearby has picnic tables, which make a great spot for people watching. The alternative atmosphere can be hard to find in Berlin Mitte, and this is one of the coolest spots in the area."

Café Cinema has a unique and charming atmosphere, perfect for film lovers. The decor is thoughtfully designed, with movie-themed pictures on the walls and lighting that gives the space a cinematic feel—almost like being on a film set. The coffee was excellent, definitely a strong point of the place. However, the overall experience was a bit disappointing due to the unfriendly staff. A more welcoming attitude would make a big difference. Also, the cleanliness could be improved, as the space didn’t feel as well-maintained as it should be. Great concept and great coffee, but there’s room for improvement in service.

Coffee was good. Staffs are friendly and kind. Unique vintage design in good location. Good to have drinks and a piece cake with friends chill there :) Cash only !!!!!!

Since there was no space inside, we sat outside, but it was still quite warm because it was tucked away in a corner. It’s a self-service place and quite crowded. The prices were reasonable.

whimsical and nostalgic. only cash if i remember correctly. they serve coffee very late which is great and decaf too. there is a separate smoking room. it’s dark inside and usually crowded. they also have some cakes i think but haven’t tried yet. cute bar for dates, it’s a bit loud but you can still talk. staff is cool.

The place is incredible, with quality beer and alcohol for everyone, but if you want to pee, you have to pay... Is this actually legal? I thought bars, since they sell alcohol, were required to provide free restrooms for their customers. Especially for women... That's why it's 1 star. You need to improve.

Used to be a haven in this gentrified area, now it's officially dead with the pay for pee policy. Still cool interior and vibes I would say.

We came on a Sunday afternoon. The place is visually appealing with a very “Berlin” aesthetic, which we initially found charming. However, the service and overall experience were quite disappointing. We ordered Aperol Spritz, and they were barely half full—not what you’d expect considering the price. On top of that, they only accept cash. While I understand this is still common in Berlin, it feels outdated and inconvenient. The worst part was trying to use the restroom. A rather unpleasant man demanded money to let me in. Honestly, I find it unacceptable that a place charging premium prices for drinks would also ask you to pay every time you need to use the toilet. Overall, it’s a shame. There are much better bars in the area with friendlier service and more up-to-date policies😅🥲

Really atmospheric place, I’m curious to visit this spot when the weather will be warmer but this time it didn’t interrupt us to sit outside with a glass of wine and beer and spend a great time :)

Yelp
We didn't have anything to eat there and I'm not sure they had food! Dead chicken alley is an ally in Berlin that has a few bars and museums. The locals are not sure why the name is Dead chicken alley but we did some research and found out this used to be a chicken slaughterhouse back during the Holocaust. Cafe Cinema is one of the bars in the alley and it was definitely the best one there! There are long tables so you just share the tables with other people and that makes it such a chill way to meet new people and learn about new cultures! Their drinks are amazing, but you have to watch out for the bartenders because they tend to change the price after each drink Other than that, the service was amazing, the bathroom lady was super nice (you have to pay .50 cents to use the toilet) and I highly recommend it if you're ever in Berlin.

Yelp
Came here during my last night in Berlin about a month ago with the bf and a friend. We had passed by it earlier in the day and thought the vintage cameras and the plaster Laurel and Hardy heads outside looked whimsical. Our German friend reminded us to go get some Berliner Weisse beers before we left, so we decided to go here to get them. Inside, the place is dark and one wall is plastered from floor to ceiling with different vintage movie posters and ads, while mismatched furniture provide seating. Being a bit of a dive, most of the drinks we saw were listed as being 5 Euros or less, including the Berliner Weisse drinks that our friend had recommended us. We tried both the red and green variants, which came out to be 3 Euros each. There is a courtyard area to go out and smoke in, and it does seem like a place where locals hang out in. The vibe here reminded me of dive bars back home in NYC. Berlin has no shortage of bars, high end or divey, but I did like this one a lot and hey, if you're staying nearby it, why not stop on by and see it for yourself?

Yelp
If you've hit the end of your rope - if you're stuck in your life, an alcoholic, or took the Ramones' song "I wanna be sedated" entirely literally and went out and "tried it at home," this is your place. The main room is quite nice, with very affordable drinks and too many tourists. But the smoking section is the real attraction, where you'll find the walking dead, a terrarium of poison that is so smoky that it seems like you're in the inside of a giant cigarette. Regulars abound, with glazed expressions, who look like the survivors of a great catastrophe.

Yelp
I've got to say that cafe cinema is a place we come back to time and time again when visiting Berlin. Very relaxed, fairly central in the Mitte/Alexaderplatz district and offering a very chilled table service experience - Cafe Cinema is somewhere to go if you're after a fairly lo-key night out. Wine and Weiss bier is all served for less that €4 a pop but if the truth be known, I haven't explored the menu any more than this at this stage. One thing to be aware is that it gets very busy in here and with most places in Berlin - they're not too keen on a load of Brits turning up to settle in for the night, however there is more seating towards the back area near the toilets. If you do end up here and it's really busy, the next alley way has a nice little tucked away bar that is pretty big and means you can enjoy a drink here before returning to Cafe Cinema! I'd highly recommend this place, make sure you check out out if you're in Berlin.

Yelp
Perfect Spot for having a beer and exploring graffiti. Very laid back, extremely friendly staff! If I lived in Berlin, I would have visited every week and have my Berliner Pilsner and sketch. There is also a comic book shop end of the alley, on 3rd floor.

Yelp
I like to stop by here after the movies. Perfect place to have a post-movie showdown and chat with your friends about what you just eye-witnessed. Whoever said that a movie-date meant no talking was wrong!

Yelp
The short of it: Dim and grungy. Meeting up at Hakescher Markt with a friend, Café Cinema was one of the first cafés we found, so in we went. It was a bit dark, but we snagged a seat by the window so it wasn't bad. Somewhat grungy, offers drinks like Diesels (beer and coke) and Alsters (0,5L for 3.50 euros), and also offers simple food--bruschetta, various other bread concoctions, etc. Service was a bit slow and not particularly friendly, but it was alright. Pretty good location.

Yelp
TERRIBLE for tourists!! WENT to the bar asked for a simple basic which said 5.50 on the menu!! Then the man infront of me said no it's 6 THEN said actually for you 7!!!! Was treated like an outsider and WOULD NEVER GO AGAIN

Yelp
Awesome place to chill plus the small gang from the summer garden is full of art works from young artists around and its changing constantly. The atmosphere is great.

Yelp
Cafe cinema is such a cozy place, if you're here around shopping with friends and need a break, this is the place to go! (If there are seats left..) With its old bar interior no one can dislike it. And the people working there are super friendly.

Yelp
I have to disagree with Darklight a bit, I find the service always, always pretentious here and have done for the four years I have lived in Berlin. However, the location is not to be beat, when you're in Mitte and just want a nice coffee and smoke at the same time, to hear a myriad of foreign languages and be left alone at the same time. The best part about the aloof service (and this has been a trend, I have seen a lot of workers come and go out of this place) is that they tend not to pay attention to you no matter what you do. So when a friend and I played a noisy game of dominoes in the middle of the afternoon while we were among the only guests there, no one batted an eye. They didn't even mind that my friend chose not to purchase anything there. Would have meant more work for them and cut into their 80th smoke break of the day. The drinks are not well-priced (average for what you get in Hackescher Markt, though, I suppose) and the menu is not expansive, but once you get something you find acceptable, the atmosphere is great, especially for solo reading or writing. I live in Neukölln and leave my house with the express purpose of going to Cafe Cinema, so although I couldn't with any good conscience give it more than two stars, i will always come back. Wait, does that even make sense?

Yelp
My first, and second, kirsch-bier was had here and enjoyed the crowd. This review was written in 2008

Yelp
It's an alright place. The service is not great, the atmosphere is sub-par (okay, it's dark and grungy), the coffee is drinkable. It's not a place I would avoid but it's also not a place I seek when I know there are ample other options in Mitte. It does tend to get crowded as well so don't be surprised if people take the empty chairs at your table.

Yelp
Great friendly place, has a cool but cosy bohemian/arty/creative vibe but not pretentious. Movie posters on one wall and memorabilia in the windows, other walls decorated with interesting b&w photos taken of presumably German actors (although I think I saw one of Derek Jacobi too) and generally good looking people whilst at the cafe, apparently in the 1990's (I asked the staff). All age groups from twenty to 50 somethings. A place you can relax in. Even saw some people playing chess on one occasion. Large alleyway area at the side of the building with seating and some interesting grafitti. Small but good selection of cocktails, beers wines etc and prices were reasonable. Ideal bar as far as I'm concerned.

Yelp
I'm an English speaking tour guide with a major company in Berlin who brings dozens of International tourists to this cafe each week for a break during my tours. The service has never been brilliant but today it was particularly bad. I have NEVER been treated as rudely in a cafe as I was today. Having lived in Berlin for 3 years now I can honestly say I was shocked by how seas a group were treated. I shall never be bringing groups to this cafe again and will certainly tell my tourists to avoid it.
