"Café Avellaneda is a great spot for enjoying a good espresso." - David Shortell

"Craft Coffee from Mexico in Coyoacan In a country that produces as much coffee as Mexico , you might expect more cafés to feature domestic beans, but that's not always the case. At Café Avellaneda, however, you can be certain that the coffee in your cup was brewed from beans grown in the Mexican states of Chiapas, Oaxaca , or Veracruz. The space is small but staff is warm and welcoming, and it's an ideal spot for a cup of coffee before or after visiting La Casa Azul, also in Coyoacan. If you get your cup to go, head to Coyoacan's main plaza (pictured here) and enjoy its fountain and people-watching."

The coffee is great and the indoor space is small, only seating for about 6 people. Coffee beans are available for purchase at reasonable prices.

Google
Tiny café in Coyoacán which is somewhat removed from the saturated third wave zones closer to the city center. The best thing about it is it seemed to be the spot where locals meet up to have a cafecito, as it had spilled out onto the sidewalk and street when we visited. Had a simple espresso / flat white. Both were good.

I heard a lot of praise about this coffee bar so I decided to go here. I have been 3 times in the past month. First of all because it is so good, but also because I was intrigued by the range of cold brews. The coffee bar is located near the center of Coyoacan , a very nice neighborhood in the city. The coffee bar is very small with barely room to sit. There are some bar stools and there is also a bench against the wall. With a bit of luck you can also sit outside on the sidewalk. That is it. But I like the place, it's cozy with a nice bar counter. And, worth mentioning, with a very good choice of music. But I came for the coffee and it is excellent. The presentation is perfect and neat, with a glass of water. What struck me, however, was the wide choice of cold drinks, with coffee as the main ingredient (cold brew cocktails, as it were). The menu of these cold brews changes every month. For example, last December there was a choice of a cocktail called 'cascara soda', which consists of a cold brew, kombucha, mandarine and mineral water. Or how about the 'Trago 2' which consists of cold brew, kefir de jamaica, ginger and orange. I thought they were all very tasty and excellent. Highly recommended to come here for this cold brews.

The place is so small, it’s more like a cafe bar.but the coffee is the best in Mexico City. The food is not the best, but remember that it’s more like a cafe bar but not really a cafe shop. I would always go back to take my coffee from them but it’s far for me.

Google
The absolute best coffee shop in Coyoacan! Get their specialty drink Juanito, you never had anything that refreshing and delicious in your life ☺️ space is a bit small, but cozy. Roasted beans are amazing too!

Amazing Flat White! I can highly recommend this place. In my opinion one of the best coffee experiences in CDMX. The place is very authentic and the staff super friendly & welcoming. You have to check it out!

Small cafe in the side streets of Coyoacán Centro. Really nice atmosphere, delicious Flat White and friendly! The pistachio lemon cookie was a bit dry for my taste but I think that’s just the style of cookie ;)

Yelp
Hidden gem of very unique coffee. They have standard espresso and coffee drinks as well as some unique coffee mixed beverages. You can tell they take a lot of care with making their drinks and take pride in their craft. Worth the walk from the Freida Kahlo museum.

Katarina L.

Yelp
The most unique coffee I think I've ever had maybe? This coffee shop was on our list of recommendations, so we set out looking for it. Otherwise, it is a little hidden so I am not sure we would have come across it. I am SO happy we did because I loved my drink. So refreshing and tasty and different. I asked the waiter taking orders what he recommended and he said the Trago #2 was his favorite. My friend got that one and I switched it up with the Tago #1. I LOVED it. It was iced coffee, tonic and lemon zest. I honestly couldn't understand much from the menu so it was a lucky hail mary. Love the bit of carbonation and the hint of lemon. If you are walking around Coyoacan, definitely pay this great little coffee shop a visit. There isn't much seating, but everyone seemed to just hang out outside, sipping and standing and relaxing. We did just that for a few minutes and then took our drinks for a walk around the area.

Alexis B.

Yelp
After having a couple of cocktails at lunch, I needed an afternoon pick me up to continue exploring Coyoacan for the day! We stopped by Café Avellaneda for an espresso each. Inside is tiny, but we got a few comfortable stools at the bar and enjoyed our great espressos. The service was great - as were the coffees. Don't hesitate to stop by if you need a caffeine pick me up and are in the area!

Austin G.

Yelp
Cafe Avellaneda is a small coffee shop in Coyoacan. Walk into the small space on a street with colorful houses and order from the barista. They have homemade pastries and a full coffee menu. My latte was small, but good! My wife's cold brew came in a TINY cup and the ice cubes in it was an odd touch. Despite that, it tasted good!

Kimmy U.

Yelp
If you got up early to wait in line for the Frida Kahlo museum only to be told it's an additional 3.5 hour wait (after already waiting 1 hour) and you don't have all day to wait for a ticket.. all because you didn't book them in advance online..... then stroll on over to Cafe Avellaneda for a nice espresso! It's about 15 mins away, but a nice walk where you'll pass a park and the market. It's a very small space, and we were lucky enough to snag bar seats before a rush came in. Menu can be simple or as complex as you want your coffee to be made. They have a lot of bean choices that you can get pourover, chemex, maybe even aeropress? but we opted for a latte and cortado. Their whole squirrel theme is cute. and I liked the cozy vibe of the place.

German R.

Yelp
Very cute local coffee shop in an amazing zone with in Mexico City. About a 10 to 15 minute walk from the Frida Kahlo Museum. Two blocks away from city center and access to great restaurants and beautiful views of park. Very detail oriented employees that take, that take their time to make a specialty crafted caffeine drink. Decor-this place is tiny. Has five stools at counter, and a sofa like seating area as well. I would say max capacity of 10 people. They also have the smallest restroom I have ever seen, watch your head on the way out! I didn't, and it cost me greatly. Service-they really take their time to make great drinks, but not very engaging to us as their customers. We were the only ones in the café and they didn't attempt to engage conversation with us. Drinks-their presentation is a 10 and drinks are pretty good as well. I really enjoyed the cappuccino and would definitely stop by again next time I'm in the neighborhood. Tip-make sure you're not in a hurry, because they do take their sweet time. Also, watch your head as you exit the restroom, because if you don't, it will hurt.

Yelp
Mexico City is blessed with many good cafes and coffee shops. However, this place is serious about the quality, service and the craft. The coffee is delicious and the menu contains the usual suspects of a specialty shop. The staff is welcoming, patient and willing to answer any questions about the beans they sell. Oh, and the pastries are just as delicious as the coffee.

Cassie B.

Yelp
Goodness this little nook tucked away was a blessing straight from God! Coffee was the best I have had 1. Because well it's just good coffee. 2. Because they get crafty with it! Their cold brew cocktail looking coffees are so fun to taste your way through. Perfect when it's a bit warm out and you have been exploring Coyoacan all day! Came back multiple times during my stay. Start with the #2!!!

Yelp
The best place to have coffee in DF. It is not even funny how much coffee comes from Mexico, and not much is brewed there. What sets this place apart is that they have three special roasts for filtering methods, like the V60, the clever, and the French press. I have been to many places and what they use is espresso roast, which they tweak under a filtering method. Even though it works to make coffee, the coffee notes will not be there. Also, the staff is super nice and so are the patrons. This place should be a clubhouse where people come to drink good coffee. I really like this place.

Lance H.

Yelp
My favorite coffee shop in Coyoacan. A small, intimate setting, you can watch your coffee being prepared and the presentation is elegant. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that the bean selection is limited. I wish they carried beans from around the world, or at least from other parts of South and Central America.

Edward G.

Yelp
My AirBnB is around the corner and I walked by this intimate caffeine alcove a number of times before coming in early today. I was warmly greeted and assisted in English. This was especially helpful because I might have missed the delicious cranberry biscuit on offer otherwise. It went along well with the slight citrus notes in my Americano. Delicioso! (I had a flat white on another visit and it was delicious.) If I had a disappointment it is this: Avellaneda is a city in Argentina; the logo of the cafe is a squirrel holding an acorn. I failed to solve the meaning of the name. Can anyone help?!

Alex Z.

Yelp
Cute little place not far from the church and the main square, the space is tiny probably max to sit 10 people but they have great selection of craft coffee; including some "coffee motails" special drip coffee and selections of beans. Their cold brew is awesome and the staff also super friendly, they recommend the coffee base on my preference.

Mannie S.

Yelp
Great little coffee shop in Coyoacan! They get pretty busy during the day, but the baristas are still very friendly and professional. Their espresso is on the more tarty side for my taste, still excellent though!

Mariana P.

Yelp
Excellent coffee!! This coffee shop is a must when you're walking around Coyoacan's center. If you are looking for a fun staple drink from this place definitely try the "Juanito" a cold drink prepared with coffee. The place is a little small so it's really hard to find seating space during the weekends but if you visit in the morning of a week day you will most likely find a quiet spot at the bar.

William L.

Yelp
A very nice specialty coffee shop in Coyoacán. I came here because of the good reviews and it did not disappoint. It's a very small coffee shop with very limited seating. The atmosphere is very nice and cozy. Luckily I got a seat here. I ordered the Juanito which is a very interesting espresso cocktail. It's espresso, tonic water, tamarind, and torouja. (Don't worry there isn't alcohol in this cocktail) ;) My friend ordered the Trago #2 which is ginger ale with cold brew, Jamaica water, with a hint of orange. Also very good and interesting! Check this place out of you're visiting Coyaocán!

Javier C.

Yelp
Loved the place. The coffee was amazing. Try the cold brew. Service was great also. Place is not huge but either wait or get your coffee to go.

Jacqueline A.

Yelp
I believe we found our favorite coffee shop in Coyoacan! The baristas are friendly, it is top quality and the location is prime! We are definitely going to become regulars to this excellent coffee shop.

Yelp
A great specialty coffee experience near the Cuoyacan square is what Cafe Avellaneda is. Roasting their own coffee, a variety of Mexican coffees, Cafe Avellaneda represents a newly blossoming speciality coffee scene in Mexico City. I love the fact that they are dedicated to perfecting Mexican coffees (as Mexican coffees are not given the praise they deserve in the specialty coffee scene) and sticking to their roots. They extract some great espresso here and brew coffee using a pour over method (the Clever). Preferring espresso over brewed coffee, I thoroughly enjoyed their cappuccino. Deliciously steamed milk and a perfectly balanced espresso, with just the right amount of acidity. However, their show stoppers are the iced coffee "cocktails" (read: no alcohol). The Juanito was legit the best iced espresso drink I have EVER had. It was a combination of espresso, tamarind, club (or tonic) soda, garnished with a orange rind (ala Old Fashioned) that was squeezed to extract the orange oils, and a variation of a dark, mild berry that didn't have a very distinct taste but added a necessary pop and fruitiness to the drink, to top it all off. HOLY crap. What an amazing concoction. The espresso and tamarind mixture was inspiring, a complete new experience for my American-accustomed taste buds. Whoa. It's a premade mixture and I was simply dying to know the recipe so I regret I didn't ask. If you go to Cafe Avellaneda (and you SHOULD), ask them and tell me!

Yelp
I simply can't say enough about this place. It's like a professional coffee shop serving top quality coffee at bargain prices. I've traveled the world searching for good coffee and no joke, I feel like this is the best coffee I've found. Better than Ethiopia, and I still love Ethiopian coffee.

Ruben A.

Yelp
I love coffee. Really love it. This place has one of the best cups of cappuccino I have ever had, surpassed only by the ones I've had in Italy. The little cookie they give you is really tasty. The service is efficient and pleasant without being overbearing. The water they served with it (very European) is filtered. I saw the delivery myself While I was there. The shop is not large, but still very unique. I really enjoyed my time there.

Erik G.

Yelp
Great cafe! Perfect place to start a day in Coyoacan, filled with locals and tourists equally. Not overwhelming friendly staff.

Glen A.

Yelp
Amazing little spot! Literally about 5-6 seats and a bench. All coffee is served on trays with stoneware cups and kettles. I had a great espresso from their la marzocco, and a beautiful oaxacan coffee from a clever served in a little kettle with a tea cup so it never cooled off. No one spoke English, but I was able to get by with what little Spanish I speak, and the staff was very understanding and helpful. I also picked up a couple whole bean bags of oaxacan coffees to go! They had some desserts, but it didn't look like they did other food although I wasn't looking for it. It's a great atmosphere! Be prepared for it to busy and seating to be hard to find. I happened to get there when there were some open seats, but shortly after I arrived the place got packed and people were standing at the end of the bar.

Sean P.

Yelp
One of my favorite cafes in CDMX. The baristas take their time to craft you drink with their high quality coffees, which are also for sale by the bag. Despite being only a few blocks from Coyoacan's main square, Cafe Avellaneda has a super chill and peaceful atmosphere where you can spend some time relaxing with an outstanding coffee.

Alton H.

Yelp
This little gem was my best yelp find while cruising Coyoacán over the holidays. Coffee shops are a dime a dozen in these parts but this place really stands out. Roast and brew specialist that make a mean espresso. The place is tucked away a little farther than the yelp map would have you think. But just when you think you won't find it, there it is on the left hand side. The only thing I would recommend to the owners is that they get some little bottles of sparkling water to accompany the espresso. Everything else is done perfectly. Great yelp recommendation.

Aaron G.

Yelp
The coffee cocktails here are amazing... we will definitely come back the next time we're in Coyoacan... they take card, and I believe have wifi... the only downside is that the space is small, but it also adds to the intimacy of the experience.

Thomas G.

Yelp
The baristas are like cocktail mixologists, but they work with coffee. My iced latte was served like an old fashion. They're drinks really hit the spot.

Charles C.

Yelp
We just stumbled upon this place. The best coffee I've had in Mexico City and there is a lot of great coffee in this city.

Ozge G.

Yelp
Amazing stop after a long walk. Everything looks delicious here. I had Té Sour, best green ice tea I had in my life. Friendly staff.

Betty L.

Yelp
Craftsmanship in each beverage is highly commendable. They have award winning baristas here! Ambience is cozy, warm & quaint. Don't go anywhere else for coffee in Coyoacan!

Sandra P.

Yelp
It's a charming cafe with wonderful baristas. Pablo (if I remember correctly) greeted us really warmly and we had a great chat about their coffee beans and brewing methods. My boyfriend and I both had their v60 (Oaxaca origin beans) coffee and it was delicious- better than Intelligentsia. We also had a flat white and it was amazing as well.

Ryan L.

Yelp
Nice small coffee bar serving up local coffees by V60 etc. I left with three bags of beans from Oaxaca.

Pelin S.

Yelp
I found this place while looking for a nice coffee shop to go to before heading to the Frida Kahlo museum. For tourists, I think this area is a really neat place to walk around to get a sense of different sides of DF. It was a little hard to find at first- it's a tiny shop that is across the street and a little further down the post office. I don't think I would have found it without my GPS! The coffee was amazing, and the service was great! We even had some small conversations with the other customers, who were very nice. They source locally, and sell small packs of local coffee (which is perfect if you're looking for gifts). The coffee tasted great, and their pastries were great too. Highly recommended.

Ben F.

Yelp
Best coffee in all of Mexico City! Served us a taster of two different blends, very strong espressos but delicious. If you are looking for a hipster coffee shop in Mexico this is the place to go. Not too far from markets and a nice plaza so a great place to head in the morning.

Andrea F.

Yelp
If fusions with coffee is what you want to try, this small coffee shop will satisfy your mouth. From coffee with jamaica to a good quality black coffee, this is a must try in the south of Mexico city.

Hey M.

Yelp
Great little hole in the wall coffee shop with excellent beans, service and iced coffees

El G.

Yelp
English: Excellent Coffee! no wonder the British coffee magazine called it the best! They take coffee seriously and for less than 2 dollars per coffee its amazing! i truly recommend it! They all take the preparation and toasting seriously. Its a small cosy little coffee shop. But it is the best coffee I've tasted in latin american.

Carmen S.

Yelp
This place is cute and the service is great, but the coffee beans are not very tastey, and my coffee was luke warm. Head to El Jarocho for more complex flavor and a great coffee.

Raina L.

Yelp
Artisan coffee, (real coffee if you are used to thee blue bottle level of coffee) serious baristas who will explain what the water, napkin, and cookie will do to improve your experience, one of the few places I've gone that didn't use a gross dark roast in DF

Mateo D.

Yelp
