On the Grid : Buda Castle

"The Buda Castle is probably the greatest tourist attraction in Budapest, which means you can hardly be alone there. But believe us! You don’t want to miss it! Every street, every corner and every house surprises you and takes you to another world. Try to go off the beaten track, follow your instincts and be absorbed by the beauty of the area!" - Barbara Majsa

"This stunning 18th-century Baroque palace, a World Heritage Site perched on Castle Hill, evokes images of Hungarian kings and the mighty Hapsburg empire. Accessible via funicular or a steep walk, the castle's gardens, squares, and lavish interiors can be taken in on a guided tour or a relaxed afternoon on your own. Various portions of the palace were added in later centuries, offering a cornucopia of architectural and historical sights. The castle's omnipresence (its height makes it visible from many corners of the city) offers orientation and grounding for tourists and locals alike."

Where to Stay in Budapest (Updated 2025)

The 25 Best Things to Do in Budapest (Updated 2025)

"I see Buda Castle more as an expansive palace complex than a single building: the original 13th-century complex was rebuilt into the huge Baroque palace you see today (1749–1769), it was looted during World War II and afterward, and it even hides a fascinating subterranean side — the dungeon with a labyrinth and the (alleged) 14‑year imprisonment of Vlad the Impaler — plus there are several museums to explore on site." - Matthew Kepnes

Buda Castle in Budapest is absolutely spectacular. From the moment you arrive, the scale and elegance of the castle are breathtaking. The panoramic views of the Danube and Pest side are incredible, especially from the terrace. Inside, the museums offer fascinating exhibitions that mix history, art, and culture, making it more than just a sightseeing spot. The castle grounds themselves are wonderful to wander, with charming streets, courtyards, and little cafes where you can take a break and soak in the atmosphere. It’s a place where history and beauty come together perfectly and definitely deserves plenty of time to explore.

Castle with a lot Hungarian history. You can see much of the castle without buying any tickets. The real highlight is that you can get a good view of the Hungarian parliament as well as the bridge from here. It also lights up at night which looks nice if you’re looking at the castle from below or from the other side

It is one the best things that you can do in Budapest. While walking through Tuna, you Can start from the bottom , the gardens and then take the escalator and again take you time to see the panoramic view of the city. The. It is another couple of minutes and you will end up in royal palace terrace. Super views and amazing ambiance.

Budapest’s postcard moment. The castle complex is sprawling and scenic, but Fisherman’s Bastion completely steals the show - fairy-tale turrets and sweeping views of the Parliament and the Danube below. Even just sitting with coffee and taking in the skyline feels cinematic. I took the hop-on-hop-off shuttle (around €15) instead of the funicular, and I’d highly recommend it - far better value, covers multiple stops, and saves you the steep climb without missing any views. Tip: Go early morning or around sunset when it’s calmer and the city glows gold.

Buda Castle, first built by King Béla IV in the 13th century after the Mongol invasion, evolved into a Renaissance palace under King Matthias and was later rebuilt in Baroque style by the Habsburgs. Destroyed in World War II and reconstructed mid-20th century, it now houses museums and galleries. - Iconic views of the Danube, Széchenyi Chain Bridge, and Parliament—some of the best in Budapest. Tips: Research in advance when will the city lights come on, secure a space in advance as there might be a crowd. - There are free elevators available, no need to pay for the funicular if you don’t want to. - On Sunday nights you might catch tango dancers on the hill, really magical in such a historic setting.

Buda Castle is an absolutely stunning and essential part of any visit to Budapest. The castle complex itself is magnificent, with its beautiful architecture and rich history that you can feel with every step. The views from the castle grounds are simply breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of the Danube River, the Parliament Building, and Pest. It's truly one of the best viewpoints in the city, especially at sunset. Walking around the courtyards and gardens is a very pleasant experience. There are several museums and the National Gallery inside the complex, which are well worth a visit if you have the time. The funicular ride up to the castle is also a unique and enjoyable way to start the visit. While it can get quite crowded, especially during peak season, it's a testament to its popularity. It's an iconic landmark for a reason and definitely a must-see for its history, architecture, and incredible views.

One of the most spectacular landmarks! Wonderful! Definitely worth a visit. We took the shuttle service which made the whole trip very pleasant, and retained ample energy to visit many interesting spots along the way! It was relatively hot weather so the shuttle was extra helpful. But there is also a public bus service that we realised later.
