I'll preface this by saying that I've traveled a great deal, and stayed in many places across India, South America, Europe, and other destinations. I'm well aware of what to expect; from bucket showers to questionable food.
I have to say, I'm very, very surprised by the experience we had at Bravo Beach Hotel. The reviews are (as you can see) good. Nevertheless, our experience differs. Perhaps the facility has taken a turn for the worse. Here's a recap of our experience:
First off: The property is charming, a South American style villa property with a couple of cute courtyard areas and two moderate sized pools. The property is well kept, too - pretty clean, and nicely maintained. At first glance we loved it - but after a few days, we were getting pretty eager to leave.
First of all, there is no hot water. Or, more precisely, there is no consistent hot water; when taking a shower, we get about 80% very cold water, with occasional shots of scalding hot water. It made showering an invigorating and sometimes painful experience. And our bathroom shower had not been cleaned before we arrived and had some mold.
The other disappointment was the breakfast. We had expected a pretty nice layout of local fruit, and likely some breads, eggs, etc. What we actually got every morning was a very tired container of bruised pineapple and kiwi, a selection of bread, hard boiled eggs, and coffee. There were flies everywhere, including in the milk jug (if they would install a powerful fan it would keep most of them away). After a few days of this breakfast, we were sick of it. Time to either make our own, or venture out.
Our room is on a beautiful piece of ocean-front property. The only real problem is... while the gate opens out on to the beach, it is a slice of rocky beach only a few feet wide. No room to enjoy it, except for a walk along the hotel wall. Also, just to the "right" of the hotel is an abandoned lot; it has a collection of stagnant water the size of a swimming pool. Every evening there are thousands of mosquitos; I don't know if the pool is contributing to the problem, but it certainly isn't helping.
The wifi does not work. There is one spot in the courtyard where you can get a strong wifi signal, but upload and download is useless. (I had taken half a dozen pictures on my phone; over the course of 5 days, I was unable to successfully upload them).
So, bottom line - After almost a week, we are eager to leave the property. We won't be back, based on this stay. If the breakfasts had been better, or the price a bit lower, it might be OK. But given the rate (over $400 a night, for a larger suite) we expected much better.
