"Brahehus Castle Pit Stop Spontaneous road trips have always been a favorite form of getaway, so when the opportunity arose in Sweden I jumped at the chance. With a local friend as our guide, we made pit stops that would rival most destinations back home. Stopping at the ruins of Brahehus castle transported us from the creaking van into 17th-century Sweden. Sit atop these archways and you’ll have a view unlike any other of the lakes Vättern and Visingsö below. We made the trip on a clear weekend in October, but if you're traveling in the fall be wary of sudden rainstorms. We found a car from Rent a Wreck (cars true to the name, http://www.rent-a-wreck.no/eng/?car-rental=uppsala)."

Interesting castle ruin with a nice view on the Vätten lake and the island of Visingsö. You can access the site from the gas station on the opposite side of the highway. Inside the restaurant at the gas station you’ll find more on the history of the castle as well as a nice maquette

The ruins of Brahehus Castle are in the Jönköping district in Småland Province, Sweden. It is 270 meters above sea level and overlooks Lake Vättern and the island of Visingsö. It was built between 1638 and 1651 and was heavily damaged by fire in 1708. It came to prominence as a romantic destination and scenery in the 19th century.

Brahehus is a well-known castle ruin located in Sweden. It was originally built in the 17th century by Count Per Brahe the Younger, a prominent Swedish statesman. The castle was intended as a grand residence overlooking the scenic Vättern Lake in southern Sweden. Brahehus is a popular tourist destination, particularly due to its picturesque location. The ruins are accessible from the nearby E4 highway, making it a popular stop for travelers. Brahehus is not only a historical site but also offers a breathtaking view that makes it a favorite spot for photographers and history enthusiasts.

A very beautiful place. If you are on the way between Helsingborg and Stockholm, it is worth stopping here for a short break.

One of the most amazing castle ruins that I've seen. The castle is next to the highway which makes it quite a popular place for those that are stopping for a short break, and if you're a history person, then you will definitely enjoy every single bit of this place. If you are staying in Gränna you can hike to this place. The hiking is through a hiking trail which at one point is closed with a gate, however, you don't need to ask for permission, as you can just go through and get to this place. This is called allemansrätt. On the way you will see Brahehus Wind Farm which is another extraordinary feature of the area. Once at the ruins, you can hike in the back and have an amazing overview of the lake with Visingsö Island in the background. The castle is not well protected with a fence where there is a high ground, so if you are coming with children, be extra careful. Overall, this is definitely one of the highlights of the region.

I was told about this spot from a local Swedish worker. It is a small castle with an amazing overlook of the lake. The castle is run down but was built in the mid 17th century. The views are breath taking and definitely a can’t miss spot for a fifteen or twenty minute break. You will have to park at the rest stop across the highway from the castle, but there is a walking tunnel that is a short two minute walk and there is always plenty of parking. If you are headed this way don’t miss this great view from a 1000 foot cliff with a great feel of Swedish history!
