Bocawina Rainforest Resort & Adventures

We had the time of our lives! This cozy resort, tucked away in the jungle was fantastic. Trails and waterfalls and wildlife galore. But the part that stood out the most was the incredible staff! So welcoming and helpful. Seamless!

The good.. grounds of the Bocawina Rainforest Resort are pretty spectacular, they’ve done a nice job of immersing you in the surrounding jungle and we saw Toucans, Guinea fowl, howler monkeys, Kinkajou, and coatimundi. All without much effort while within the resort. The staff at Bocawina are really nice and the guides we had while doing excursions were very friendly and did a nice job informing people of the surrounding animals and native plants. The bad..the place is just weird. Meal times are all predetermined and we were fed bad buffet style food. 20 plus T-bone steaks flopped onto a serving platter and left out on a bar top for people to pick through as an example. There wasn’t a person in our group of three that wasn’t disappointed and quite frankly kinda disgusted by the food quality and service. They had a really sweet girl working the restaurant by herself (not the chef) who did her best to present the slop served in a tasteful way. Definitely not her fault!! When we travel we look forward to enjoying local cuisine and what we got was about as far from that as imaginable. They have really missed the mark on the food served, and the manner in which they serve it. We stayed in a “cabana suite” and found it dated, kinda dirty, and lacking basic amenities such as hot water at the sink, on our second night we had no hot water in the shower either. There was a gritty residue on the floors, stained towels and really uncomfortable beds. We were here to enjoy the surrounding nature and that we did. 5 stars across the board in that regard, 2 stars for the food, and two for the accommodation. Our family recommendation would be to stay somewhere else and take excursions into Bocawina for adventure and nature observation but would not recommend staying. The wildlife saved this stay for us, you might not be so lucky. Proceed with caution to Bocawina rainforest resort. It’s over priced and underwhelming.

Rooms and food were fine. Ziplines were amazing. Trails were beautiful, however poorly marked. Bog drop falls is a long way, 4 hours to get there. Not conviced it was worth the drop. Pack sturdy shoes or hiking boots. Lots of eater and big spray.

We stayed 5 nights and did the all-inclusive package. In hindsight we think 3 nights would have been perfect, 4 okay too. But 5 nights is too many. Overall the visit was a success and yes, we would recommend Bocawina. Staff: 5 of 5 stars. The guides, drivers, and restaurant staff were all a highlight of our stay. They all were friendly, professional, well-spoken, and knowledgeable. The guides especially were a real highlight of our stay. Room: 2 of 5 stars. Toilet barely flushes. The decor looked like second purchases from an thrift store in USA, worn out living room art that has nothing to do with Belize or a rainforest. The chairs in the room had thinned out pillows from years of use, that was no big deal since there is hardly any storage, shelves, hooks, or dressers in a room to store our belongings. There is no AC since its an offgrid place, so count on 1-4 fans blowing 24-7 to stay cool. We were disappointed in the room quality. They were clean though. Food: 5 of 5 stars. We looked forward to our daily congregations in the restaurant. The food was good each time, the staff accommodated my wife's dietary needs, we loved our meal sessions and meeting new people. Excursions: 5 of 5. We did waterfall rappeling, hiking, zipling, waterfall swimming, night hike, cave tubing, chocolate, and horseback riding. The guides were good every single time. They learned our names and became our temporary buddies during our 5 days. Transport: 3 of 5. It was always on time, always courteous and safe. The drivers were good and acted as guides as well. The vehicles themselves were pretty worn out. We have been on many other Belize guided trips and the Bocawina vehicles were on the lower end of quality. No AC in one van, mildew on ceilings, seatbelts hit or miss, no shocks/suspension. They need to upgrade. But again, it was reliable and did the trick. Jungle: 5 of 5. This is what we ultimately came for, jungle noises, air, vibe, wildlife, vegetation, birds. The setting in the resort and outside is great.

This is Karyn Raidl, nickname Kitty. Doni from the Laru Beya Resort told me the Director of Operations was going to contact. I'm at the airport currently, so my reception isn't the best. I'm contacting you because I'm still very upset how I was delayed getting back to my mother after my tour. It took over three hours for someone to bring me back, after I paid over $200 for the transportation. Bare minimum I want my money back for the ride. That was very wrong of them to keep me trapped there. I also got stuck on the wrong tour and missed part of it after running up the mountain to try to catch up with a tour group. There were so many things that went wrong. I at least want my transportation money back. Asap. I took the tour on Friday, December 27th. My mother had fallen at the resort while I was waiting over three hours to get back to her. Even when I told the staff that, they still refused to take me back. It was just her and I traveling. I needed to get back to her. Please refund me my transportation fee. I was trapped for three hours there before given a ride back. Now my texts and phone calls are being ignored. I'm very very upset and want a refund!

DO NOT STAY HERE! We made a reservation for one night because we were flying to Ambergris Caye the next day. We had a free cancellation 72 hours prior. The COMMUNICATION WITH THE RESORT IS HORRIBLE!! You can't reach them by phone & they don't respond to emails!! We found out about a week prior that our flight times had changed significantly & it no longer made sense to stay at Bocawina due to the 2 1/2 hour drive each way to the airport. I called the resort several times during their normal business hours. No one ever answered so I had to leave messages. No return phone calls!! I also emailed the resort informing them of our situation & cancelling our reservation. I have been home for a week & still haven't received a response to my email or a return phone call. Come to find out that they are trying to charge me a $100 cancellation fee! Not gonna happen, I've disputed the charge.

My husband and I just returned last night from 7 days in Belize. We were at Bocawina Resort for our 30th wedding anniversary, and everyone there made it spectacular. I am more of a beach girl and really went to the jungle as a compromise, and was pleasantly surprised. I absolutely loved it. The staff made it wonderful first of all; so friendly from the minute we arrived until when we departed. So attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly. The rooms were very clean and comfortable, the food delicious, but again staff was icing on the cake. I am a city girl, but found myself going on a night time jungle hike, which I told my husband I would assess and decide if I would join once there, and I am happy I went. I am grateful I didn’t hear the howler monkeys prior to that night walk because I would’ve chickened out. Be prepared they do sound like dinosaurs but what an experience hearing that. I had the most amazing massage from Anna outside, under a beautiful tree, listening to the birds with a slight breeze - heavenly. We also zip lined and hiked lower Bocawina Falls. Never a dull moment, being outside with nature, spectacular views! Thank you Meilin, Stephen, Brandon, Kaliyah, Eddy, Jose, Emilio, Victor, Anna, and Chelsi for making our stay wonderful!
