Swing and a miss. It’s very cute inside and out, the ambiance is great, the outdoor patio is awesome, the kids loft is wonderful. The coffee is undrinkable, I ordered a cappuccino and it was terrible, I tried adding simple syrup, but I had to throw it away, it’s rare that throw any coffee out, this was worse than Flying J Highway coffee, if they can get their coffee game together, this place could be 5 stars, as it is, I won’t be returning any time soon. Best of luck.

Black Bird Bookstore is a nice neighborhood book store with a full espresso bar that opens at 7am. I enjoyed their espresso tonic. Their outdoor backyard garden is verdant and lush, with a variety of weathered and silvery wood benches and Their selection of books was a lot more sparse and limited than I expected. A large part of their shelves was dedicated to Palestinian and Middle Eastern authors, which I have no issue with but there was little else in the way of art and creativity on the shelves. The rest seemed to be dedicated to children’s books and locally published books, including an upstairs area for children which I didn’t go upstairs to look at. I didn’t see any books on this visit that piqued my interest.

this cute & peaceful retreat, right by ocean beach in the outer sunset district, is perfect for bibliophiles. the staff are kind and approachable, but the coffee is so-so and could use some improvement.

This place is BOMB! 🤩 one of the very few places I feel deserve a complete 5.0! A local gem with a great atmosphere, wonderful staff, and all the drinks I’ve tried so far (psl, mocha and matcha all oatmilk iced) are beyond expectations! Great social place even for an introvert like me!

Step inside and the interior has a lovely selection of well curated books with an additional section for children to find books within their reach with thoughtfully provided sitting areas for them to dive in to their new selection. The exterior patio hidden behind the book area is an absolutely well thought out space. I won't give away its charm but it's definitely worth going by and seeing for yourself. That thoughtful "have a nice day" by the barista as several of us were leaving was just icing on the cake. Lovely, thank you for bringing a little slice of joy to this amazing city. A fun and unique coffee shop and bookstore. It's like a more homely and quaint version of Barnes and Noble and Starbucks. They don't have a lot of seating, but they do have two floors of lots of different book selections, as well as a very cute outdoor garden. The coffee is good for what the offer - nothing special, but nothing to be upset about. Overall, a fun spot to visit, grab coffee, and browse a wide selection of literature.

This is a lovely bookstore and coffee shop a few blocks from the beach (and across the street from Hook Fish!). I think the best part is the beautifully landscaped back patio, which is filled with all sorts of flowers, botanicals and succulents to enjoy and purchase. Lots of local treasures from Bay Area artists and authors.

Cute neighborhood book store with a cafe and an outdoor garden! I always have to pop in if I'm around. They have a variety of books and some other crafts, art and knickknacks. The cafe has coffee, tea and pastries which you can enjoy in the outdoor garden. It's also kid friendly, they have a good kids section for books and toys.

I can't explain it, but this place is emblematic of the Outer Sunset. If an establishment could be the mascot, this coffee shop bookstore would be it. I've been going here for years, and I don't plan to ever stop. Love you blackbird!

I love love love the idea of a bookstore and coffeeshop! Anddd they have a small gift section with some puzzles, ceramics, and pins. Literally all my fave things! I only wish that the store was a bit bigger with a larger book selection. It definitely seems nicely curated, but none of the fiction books really stood out to me. I did like their coffee table book and cookbook selections! The coffee was also great. We got a normal iced latte and a vanilla iced latte, and the drinks came up super quickly! It was nice to sit outside with the coffee and chat. They also have a nice patio in the back, which was packed. I wish I lived closer so I could come back all the time! Would def go back if I'm ever in the area, but since it's so small, I don't think it's worth a trek into the city just to check it out. And parking in the area was pretty difficult.

Black bird coffee is a cute little bookstore with a coffee shop inside! The barista's were closing but were so kind enough to make one more order for us. They were chatting with us and so sweet. I ordered the matcha with vanilla syrup and it was delightful. I paid around $6-ish for the matcha with oatmilk. I recommend checking place out! They also have a backyard for customers to sit - we ate and drank our coffee there. It was a cute greenery garden!

Absolutely adore Black Bird! Their drink selection is typical of a cafe. Their matcha is done VERY well and they sell Rocky's matcha for my matcha folks. They additionally have a small selection of books and cookware to browse after you order you cook. Their back patio is almost always crowded but quite nice if you can snag a spot. Definitely plan on coming back to try some of their baked goods.

I love black bird and I'm so glad they got to expand in this bigger space. They have great books (they can also order whatever you want), great coffee, and more importantly it's a lovely place to hangout! The yard is awesome and good for kids, they have regular community events, one of the gems of the outer sunset.

This bookstore located in the Outer Sunset is so cute. Love the aesthetics. Light, airy, and dog-friendly. Besides books, they have a lot of toys for sale and I brought one for my pup. He saw it, liked it and picked it out, so of course I had to get it for him. I think they also have a ceramic or plant area in the back. The front is a coffee kiosk that sells drinks and some yummy treats which we purchased to enjoy in the back garden area. On the day we were there months ago, one of the employees' dog, a Shiba Inu was there being the bookstore mascot. Friendly service. Located on Irving Street and 47th Ave, across the street from Hook Fish.

Rocky's matcha is indeed superior...the legitimate matcha ups this place to 6 stars in my heart. They sell some lil cans of Rocky's on the side (although overpriced), as well as many more cool goodies (cooler bags, clothes, accessories, stationary, etc) inside the store besides all the books. Staff are super chill. You order up front and can sit inside right by the books and the barista action, or outside in a nice garden setting. They had some good looking donuts and other pastries that I will get next time. Book selection was nice, although I do not wanna pretend I am more literate than I rlly am. I didn't want to leave when we had to, but I do wish we came at a time with less ppl. it was pretty crowded on a Saturday around 5pm. It is relatively spacious inside, but not exactly a quiet place. Hope to be back regularly to finish my book with this 10/10 matcha:)

Such a cute bookstore! I love the vibes here, great to explore and hang out with your friends. They have a cute back patio as well. I tried the matcha latte. They made it very quickly. I thought the matcha latte was ok. My friends also agreed that their matcha lattes tasted ok.

Such a cute bookstore/coffee shop in the outer sunset! You can order coffee and pastries at the front window and pick it up at the counter inside of the bookstore. They have books of plenty of genres as well as cute gift ideas you can shop from like tote bags, cooler bags, tea cloths, etc. they have a few stools and counter seating inside as well as in front of the store. What surprised me and what I personally enjoyed the most was the outdoor patio area! It was quite spacious and a nice, quiet area to relax and sip your drink, catch up with a friend, or to read a book. I would try to keep the volume low though. There was a girl who was talking at normal volume and I could hear her whole conversation lol. I ordered an iced matcha oat latte with vanilla, and I really enjoyed it! They use Rocky's matcha and it reminded me a lot of the matcha latte I had at Community Goods in LA (they use the same matcha). I'm not sure if you can ask to add an extra shot but that's the only thing I'd do differently next time just bc I personally prefer my matcha strong. This was a good matcha though - I was impressed since it's not a cafe that specializes in matcha! I usually am disappointed by most cafe matchas but this was good. Also a nice place to take kids since they have plenty of children's books. They have an additional kids area upstairs as well as a cute little reading nook for kiddos under the staircase.

This store is the cutest gem! The front window is a cafe and the rest of the store is a bookstore. The middle of the store is a section with little trinkets and gifts. There are a few seats in the front and on the outdoor back patio. The loft area has a couch for the kids. My friend and I came here to check out their matcha because we saw on social media that they sold the popular Rocky's Matcha tins. The matcha wasn't on display, so we asked at the bookstore counter. They kindly explained the flavor profiles of the three available single cultivar options. At $32 each, the price is a little more expensive than what you'd find online, but you get the convenience of being able to buy in person. They told us that they used the ceremonial blend at the cafe, but they were out of those tins to sell. At the cafe window, we both ordered unsweetened iced matcha lattes with oat milk. Even just from the color, I could tell that it would be good. Sometimes I find that oat milk can be overpowering, but I could actually taste the matcha in my drink. It was creamy and umami. This is one of the best matcha lattes I've ever had at a cafe that wasn't focused solely on matcha. I would definitely recommend this spot. I will come back in the future to get a matcha before going on a walk on the beach or at the park!

The cutest bookstore + coffee shop! The ambiance is amazing and we loved sitting in the back area. My favorite is their olive oil + earl grey loaf cake. And their latte is amazing!

I've always loved visiting Black Bird because it's such a well designed book store and the backyard patio is my favorite hidden garden oasis in the city. However, when I went there about 2 years ago, I disliked their matcha latte. I recently heard that they're now serving Rocky's Matcha so I went to give them another try and... the upgrade is SO real! Now, this has become one of my top matcha destinations in the city. The staff are super friendly and let you browse for books with your drink! Also, be sure to join their rewards program to save money towards future book purchases!

Such an adorable gem close to Ocean Beach! Light airy coffee shop and bookstore with a great selection of progressive books + cookbooks + children's books. Friendly staff, strong / creamy matcha, and the vegan chocolate spice donut was lovely - cakey and dense and sweet. The back patio is such a sweet spot to relax after a run, catch up with someone, or just read!

Their backyard is the perfect cozy spot to read your book you just bought! Just a little snug so have to get lucky to find a spot. Their cafe functions as an outdoors service, while their bookstore register is inside the cafe. Cool spot, and lovely pastries too! Just wish they had more seating :/

This cafe has become my absolute favorite spot in San Francisco. It's where I go to recharge and relax, and my kid loves it here just as much! The matcha and coffee are always on point, and the pastries offer something for every craving. The cozy backyard, filled with trees, creates such a peaceful vibe, perfect for a little escape from the city buzz. What makes it even better is how kid-friendly it is. With books and toys spread across both floors, it's a great space for families. I can enjoy my coffee while keeping an eye on the kids having fun. Whether I'm here with friends or spending time with family, it's always a happy experience!

Black Bird Bookstore and Café wasn't just a café where anyone sits down and has a morning brew, there's books and handy merchandise to purchase. There's very limited indoor and outdoor seating, two separate cash registers, and a cozy backyard with some kids activities, both inside and out. Upstairs, there's loads of books and comics good for children based on their young age. Even though customers like us kept our voices down in the book section, it's not a library unless we get to purchase a book. While books and merchandise were expensive, the drinks and pastries were half the price each. Love Rocky's matcha green tea with oat milk which looks cute. Might come back for matcha lemonade with a different pastry that has an edible flower on top! Overall, cozy atmosphere, cool staff, and a few blocks towards the ocean beach!

I am proud of myself I did not spend adult monies. The barista could not have been any nicer! Explains GF and other options and thoroughly knew pastries and their origins. Iced coffee was perfect. The bookstore had a bunch of tinctures and bath salts from Santa Cruz, well curated book collection and other interesting Knick knacks magnets etc. They have an educator discount which is awesome. I would have spent a while in here if I could. Coming back.

I came in with a girlfriend for a coffee date, maybe we came in at the wrong day but it was mostly packed with babies. Not the vibe I was looking for with a girlfriend. The bookstore itself is a smaller size, you won't need much time to look around. The outdoor patio is adorable but like I said, I must have come on the wrong day. We were still able to enjoy ourselves and get some sun. The coffee I had was pretty good, but nothing special.

A very cute coffee shop. Just FYI, they don't carry soy milk so I had to go for oat milk as my non-dairy option. Also ordered the blueberry pistachio cake and it paired perfectly. Enjoyed a lovely morning with coffee and dessert on the wooden bench outside the coffee shop. Would love to be back here next time I'm in the area.

Loved this gem! We had lunch at Hook Fish across the street and then walked over. It has a great cafe with some baked goods. The bookstore is well curated with great books, there's something for everyone here. We ended up buying a sticker and a book. Excited to go back!

An amazing bookshop and cafe. Very friendly staff, and in general a very peaceful vibe. There isn't a wide selection of books, but it's very well appointed and I highly recommend stopping in for coffee and browsing.

Black Bird Bookstore & Cafe is a charming community space, indie bookstore & cafe with a focus on children's books. The bookstore features a larger children's book selection, a reading "fort", an entire young children's reading area upstairs and a roomy backyard. There are also many good offerings for adults. The book store includes a small cafe (a take away window) with good expresso, drip & matcha drinks. For books, in addition to a large picture book section for young readers, you'll find fiction, non-fiction, biography/memoir, cookbooks, and a YA section along side nicely merchandised gifts. The book selection is small and curated, with books facing out on thin shelves rather than a complete selection of titles you might find at a larger bookstore, but the selections are sound, contemporary and thoughtful. The bookstore features high ceilings, light wood, and attractive & well considered retail displays.

Such a lovely coffee shop with a bookstore attached to it. Tons of natural lighting and the shop allows you to read inside. They also have simple drinks but unique pastries! Tea cake is my absolute fav along with their drip coffee :)

I remember this cozy bookstore when it was on Judah, so happily chanced upon it at its new location. It has been here since March 2022. They still have a lovely garden/patio with seating and a good variety of plants for sale. The orange chairs are still there! (Please see my photos of the former location.) They now make coffee and tea drinks, sell great pastries from Loquat Bakery (order at the window outside) and delectable Valerie Confections chocolate bars. The housewares gifts are lovely as is the art for sale. What else would one need in a comfortable, well-lit space, but great books? The carefully chosen selections are beautifully displayed. The cookbook section is very good. Don't miss the great children's section at the back! I was on my way to the bus stop, so did not have enough time to peruse the books, but will return. Enjoy visiting!

Super cute cafe with assorted types of coffee and teas (hot and cold), and a small number of pastries. You come here though to get a drink and browse the books. There's a really nice variety of books from small and local authors. There's also some gorgeous seating areas in the back in a garden-type enclosure. We picked up a range of drinks and snacks and spent an hour sitting out back talking. Once done, buy a book or four on your way out. This place is well worth keeping around.

Walking and exploring the neighborhood with my kiddo. She loves books. I love coffee. So, Black Bird Bookstore and Cafe was a perfect pit stop. Order drinks at the outdoor window and browsed the bookstore while waiting for our order. I ordered the Espresso Tonic, which I quite enjoyed and only wished was a bigger size. Kiddo enjoyed her Matcha latte. Enjoyed browsing the books they have on display and kiddo also liked the artwork. They have a cute backyard area as well, which is set up nicely to sit and relax a while. Bright indoor space.

I was SO excited to try the matcha but I ordered it with whole milk and unfortunately, I think it had gone bad. I could not taste the matcha at all because of the rancid taste of the milk... I couldn't even go back to the place to let them know. The whole place is sooo cute though so I will be back. But it's unfortunate they don't really check the quality of perishable ingredients.

Great stop on a morning walk with my pup. Clean, simple, great service with a smile. Parking is fairly easy, depending on time of day. Very close to Ocean Beach to watch the waves, take a walk or sit on a bench.

I saw someone give this spot a one star review bc of bathrooms? Lol get a life. If a bathroom is needed so badly, there are free public bathrooms on Great Highway and Judah, about a 5 minute walk. My friend and I had just finished eating lunch at Hookfish across the street, and were walking around the neighborhood after. She recommended checking out the bookstore across the street, and I'm so glad we did! This is a fantastic bookshop, very cozy, modern, and nicely curated. I really enjoy that they have a "Bay Area fiction" section, in addition to cookbooks and food related books, to children's books and even early reader books. For such a small shop, it does carry a lot of content, and is organized so nicely. They also have a cute relaxing garden outside, and a Cafe in front that serves Four Barrel coffee. There is also an upstairs Kids Loft, which I didn't get the chance to explore, but next time. Great service too. They also have a rewards program, buy $100, get $10 back! I ended up buying a cute children's baby book, "Counting with Wayne Thiebaud" - how perfect to read to my daughter! Love the SF touches!!

So cozy, the space is super child-friendly also. The coffee is from four barrel and I really like it, also uses my favorite oat milk from minor figures which is better for you and tastes really good IMO. Pastries are from Loquat, and I love the book/gift curation, not a huge selection (which I prefer) but thoughtfully curated, you can tell that readers put the selection together. The selection is diverse and current which I also appreciate, sometimes I go into a bookstore and I see the same books by the same white male authors that I saw 15/20 years ago which astonishes me or it's just some janky algorithm of best sellers that doesn't represent very good or interesting writing, so I always appreciate carefully curated choices which is bookstore has! There's a wonderful outside space and plenty of chairs for reading and lots of light. They've thought of everything that would make a reader happy. Wish I lived in SF because this would be my go-to place to hang. But I'll def be back whenever I'm in the area.

What an incredible gem! Nothing against the sunset, I've never wanted to live there, but after stumbling upon Black Bird, man I would consider living nearby just to have easy access to this spot. After ordering food and dealing with the crowds during lunchtime across the street at Hook Fish (which was delicious but dang stressful!), Black Bird felt like a sanctuary. It's beautifully laid out with plenty of open space and exposed wood, plus a loft I didn't even get to explore. They sell coffee and baked goods and made an adorable kitty cat in our cappuccino. There's also a little gift shop with pins and cute things (just a few items, good quality, integrated well with the book shop). For how amazing the space was, I was shocked it wasn't run over with people. Instead, it had *just* the right amount of people - enough so you're not questioning why it's empty, but it was quiet and there was plenty of open seating (big enough for parent + kid to sit and read together in the kids section too!). Just as I thought I was done gaping at the space... there is a BEAUTIFUL backyard! Again, there were people there, but everyone had their own little space. There was one of those wooden train sets and some toys. They even have a small shop selling plants in the back!! Oh, and when my 2-year-old was flipping out, I got nothing but kind eyes and sympathetic looks. Thank you for not being judgy. I could easy spend a whole day here, just wish I live closer. Please open a location in the Excelsior, I promise you will get tons of business!

I have always meant to visit the new location, and today I did! It's so beautiful, with such friendly people who work there. The back yard area feels like you're in a tropical island. They have a nice cafe in the front, and a wonderful selection of books for all ages. My 9 year old and 11 year old both got a book, and our friend got a cooking book. What a wonderful place, to connect with community. The price of the books were also reasonable, and it was our pleasure to support our local business. Will definitely be back!

It's a cut little coffee shop walkable distance from the beach. I gave 4 stars cause coffee was ok-ish but I'd still visit it for the vibe. Service was super friendly, interior and exterior of this place is an absolute charm. The coffee shop has bunch of handmade items on sale varying from furniture to kids books, toys etc. They also have plants for sale at the back. I mean hanging out in the patio with a book and coffee on a sunny afternoon sounds perfect. I'd visit again :)

Peaceful patio, delightful drinks, excellent and quirky selection of books (adult + kids). Come here for a quiet catch-up with a friend or a chill peruse while sipping a fresh brew. My one complaint? No sugar packets or add-your-own milk. Simple syrup just isn't the same, and I always feel weird watching someone else pour my milk and sweetener. Am I not trusted for this type of task?

Such kind people, and such a lovely venue to sit, sip, and read. I've been a customer for years, and BBB has yet again just nailed it -- they know their customers, and they've created such a lovely, inviting place for customers. Keep it up!

I used to live pretty close to this area and forgot how much I love this area by Ocean Beach! I came here on a Saturday morning and street parking was easy to find. I ordered a vanilla latte and a tomato boureka and both were great! The cafe was busy and there wasn't a lot of outdoor seating at the time so I enjoyed both while browsing books. They had a flyer on their window for some monthly events at the store which looked interesting. I definitely want to return to check some of them out!

Such a cute little cafe and bookstore near the beach! They had a great selection of books, wrapping paper , stickers and enamel pins! My friend purchased a book and a couple stickers. It's so quaint and cozy in there and smells of fresh brewed coffee. I got a piece of the espresso cake to take home and it was awesome! Not too sweet and not bitter either. We both really enjoyed it a lot. Everyone working was kind, pleasant and eager to help you find what you're looking for. Love to see a small shop like this thriving!

Found a favorite spot! Order at the window and enjoy the cure space inside, while browsing books, local art, and other goods. Drinks are smooth and rich. An ideal day comprises of eating seafood actoss the street and hopping over to Black Bird to relax.

I can't say enough good things about the store and the people that work there (shout out to you Jo! and cashier and chief gift wrapper-didn't get her name sadly) I've only been there once before for a short time. I went yesterday with my dog (who was quite vocal that day) and we were embraced wholeheartedly. I got a mass of gifts for a friend's bday among their well-curated books and other items, and they were beautifully wrapped. The team also showered my dog with attention and snacks. and I felt like I was treated with such care. The store has such a homey, cozy, and lovely vibe! I will definitely be going back!
