Black Armadillo House

Stayed in Oaxaca for 4 nights and ended up coming here 3 of those nights. The place is in a courtyard which had a nice ambiance and setting. There was a live performance on Saturday night and it was perfect. Service was really welcoming and friendly but most importantly the food and drinks were excellent. It's a nice and quiet place just outside the downtown area that is great for a relaxed evening with some company.

Amazing place to chill for hours! Guacamole was out of this world and the papas bravas were also delicious! Drinks were some of the best we’ve ever had and prices were super reasonable. Service is attentive and the space is beautiful! We are really disappointed to have found this place on our last day in Oaxaca… Don’t hesitate to drop by!

We literally stumbled across this place and it was one of our best dining experiences in Oaxaca and that is saying a lot. I’m saying that not from a “Mexican food “ perspective but more from we needed a meal and were far from disappointed. The space is really welcoming and charming and I was first concerned because it was pretty empty (maybe more of a late night spot). We came twice and had the nicest server we had anywhere in Oaxaca. The place deserves 5 stars just for her, but the second time we came we had dinner instead of just drinks and it was pretty impressive. The menu is simple, so don’t expect much that way. We started with the best guacamole we had on our whole trip, and I ordered the hamburger (needed a change from mole) which was very good and my wife had shrimp tacos which were delicious. The place is mostly “a bar with food” and the cocktails were excellent. They had a limited mezcal selection but if I understood correctly what they offered were “house” brands, so you may not be able to taste them elsewhere. Anyway, the two I tried were quite good. If you get a chance check out this literally hidden gem. It’s tucked away on a side street away from the crowds which is another plus.

The food here is absolutely is incredible. Everything is perfectly seasoned and balanced. Drinks are great too. I would recommend the Anti-Covid drink (yes, it's called that) with ginger. Ambience and music are great too. There is a lot of open space and tons of art on the walls. It may take a while for your food to come but it's worth the wait.

Unrefined but super friendly and the best guacamole we've ever had. Easily the hardest working service we've seen in the city so far.

Do Not Come Here!! Honestly the worst service and worst food in months of being here. Took 45 minutes to get drinks and an additional 20 minutes for guacamole and essentially French fries. Also they don’t accept card which is totally fair, but it would be appreciated if it had any sort of cash only signs upon entry or on menus. All in all, don’t waste your precious time on this place when there is so many incredible places to eat here!

Wow!! I am blown away by this place - the food is so fresh and perfectly displayed. Almost too good to eat, but after the first bite I knew there was no stopping! I actually ended up here after seeing an ad for live piano. The piano player tonight is so adorable and incredibly talented! Even the kitchen staff seem to be thoroughly enjoying the show. I ordered a chupacabras, grilled veggies, and a mushroom tlayuda. I’m typically not a huge fan of tlayadas but this impressed! If you get the chance, this place deserves your business!!

This a really great restaurant. I love the space it’s in and the service was extremely friendly. There are enough local dishes and ingredients to try but also some comfort food options too. I had the tlayuda con hongos and it was beautifully presented. My husband had the hamburger which was a huge portion and really good. The mezcal cocktails were also very well-priced and well-balanced.
