Big T sells 'man' sandwiches, and so it is that men come here in their 4x4s to stoke up on braised brisket, big burgers, bbq ribs & classics, crowded platters and beer.
I've tried Big T at the Calgary Farmer's Market a few times, and decided to go to the McMahon Stadium site to see if their menu holds up. It does, and best you bring a big appetite with you?
Had their Smokey Southern Melt, and with melted mozzarella and strong bbq sauce on the side, and a dish of their thick molasses baked beans. Man, but man, man food indeed. Ain't kinda dainty like donairs, Viet subs, Subway drek or Thai wraps, but 'tough and mean' at the same time as tender and tasty.
In truth, I have always thought the meat could be spicier, have more zap, but have to remember that Calgary is not the deep south after all (snow on Sept. 12 this year!): likely this resto owner also caters to the relatively-bland taste buds of the average Canadian.
All their ingredients distinctly add to the flavour, and the bread they use, although white, easily holds this big sandwich together. Kinda nice to not have it soak through or fall apart like so many cheap burger buns in this city.
I asked the cooks about their burgers, and they told me honestly that IF a customer likes smoked hamburger meat, they are very good. Kinda neat not to be told that everything on the menu is excellent.
Nonetheless, get over to any of their restos to check out a 'man' meal that's signature to a 'muscle' appetite (they have a branch in Deer Ridge too).
Big T it is, mon! Okay?
