"Easily the most popular street food in Germany is the currywurst, a fried and sliced bratwurst sausage served in a paper boat or in a bun smothered in a tomato-curry gravy, with french fries on the side. It’s the focus of the fittingly named Berlin Currywurst counter in Chelsea Market, which offers a range of sausages tricked out as curry wursts: knackwurst (pork), paprikawurst (pork), Nürnberger wurst (veal, pork), rindwurst (beef), and a tofu kielbasa, plus more." - Robert Sietsema, Viktoria Muench

Google
I was excited to see that they had a vegetarian currywurst here! They have a few different sausage options including a tofu kielbasa. The tofu kielbasa was very good and the ketchup with (lots of) curry powder was a unique taste but worked great. The bread roll was fresh and soaked up the sauce well. It was nothing gourmet but it was definitely tasty. And inexpensive! The staff was nice and my order was ready quickly. There’s some bar seating specifically for Berlin Currywurst and general market seating nearby.

My first Bratwurst... it was great! Ordered the Nurnberger on a roll with sauerkraut with a Paulaner Munchner Lager. Great pairing. The cook was super nice as well.

I now bring all my friends here when possible. The value exceeds other neighborhood options. Employees are warm and recommend dishes that make you happy. The experience was fantastic! You get honest returns on payment.

I was here on a busy Saturday, and their service was fast and friendly. I got the tofu kielbasa, which is vegan. I chose to get it currywurst style, which is with ketchup and curry powder, and a piece of bread. I’m not the biggest ketchup fan, so maybe next time I would try it on a bun instead, but the pieces that were covered in curry powder were delicious, and the dish felt like a good portion for its price. It also only took about 2–3 mins between when I ordered and when it was ready, which I appreciated!

Google
German culture at its best. Great food and atmosphere. Great service.

Google
Speaking as a German, this is similar as you would eat it in Berlin / Germany. Delicious sausage, sauce which has just a touch of spiciness and a typical tasty German Pretzel. Choice of beer is outstanding - even time restricted Oktoberfest beer is available. Wanna enjoy some German eat and drinking culture in NY. Come here.

I had a currywurst and a side of fries. It was alright. First time having it.

Google
We've visited Berlin Currywurst pre-covid last year. Delicious spot for all times of the day. :) This spot is located within Chelsea Market, right around the corner as you enter from the Starbucks side. Yelp isn't attaching my photos for some reason. Listing our items below, sans beer. Nothing like an ice cold beer in the dead of winter with wursts for breakfast. Can't wait to return.

Brian R.

Yelp
Classic currywurst, with a selection of top flight sausages and German beers. There's even a vegan tofu kielbasa. German breakfast is served all day. They also do a mustard kraut. In Chelsea Market. If you're looking for legit currywurst without the trip to Berlin, you've arrived. Prices more than fair!

Bryan J.

Yelp
The service was quick and easy. The ambiance had the feel of a German curry cart, very authentic. I had a delicious curry sausage with onions and kraut on a roll. Very good!

Leilani S.

Yelp
Finally got to try this place! Sometimes it's open, sometimes it's not. Honestly a hit or miss Workers are nice, food comes out quick. Menu is easy to read. No seating for their place but there is seating around Chelsea market and outside. Restroom is downstairs Got the pork and cheese brat on a bun with sauerkraut and mustard and a side of fries. It's was sooo good! You can really taste the cheese and it was a decent size meal! The bun was soft and good amount of sauerkraut and mustard. The fries were so addicting and good! If anything, get the fries!

Ulrike W.

Yelp
Having been born and raised in Germany, I can attest that this Curryurst is pretty authentic! I stop by here every time I'm at Chelsea Market. Nice people at the counter. Betty very clean, great beer.

Yelp
Was really thankful of this place for being the only place that wasn't being swarmed when I got here and was able to get a seat. Definitely wanted to try the currywurst and it was okay! I just tasted like a wurst that was cooked and then topped with curry seasoning and powder honestly. The bread was eh. I liked the fries at this place though. If you're craving currywurst or have a craving for German stuff and you're in the area, you should try it out. I do not think you should travel so much just to come here though, it's not that worth it.

Yelp
I was walking through Chelsea square and looking for a place to eat, there was a decision between this place and pizza. There were no seats at the pizza place and they have a happy hour from 3-5 so I decided to inquire. I arrived at 458 and asked if they would honor happy hours and they obliged, this solidified the deal for me! Food: 4/5. I ordered the pork braut in a bun with the sauerkraut and onions on top. I was a little disappointed in the sauerkraut, I was expecting a more vinegar taste being a German style eatery. The beer was from cigar city which is based out of Tampa in Florida where I'm from. I was disappointed I did not get a German beer but that was my own fault, I ordered an IPA and saw it after. The fries were delicious, I could taste the salt on them which was nice. They tasted as if they were freshly prepped that day which I enjoyed about it. Service: 5/5 I would say because of the quickness of the service, honoring happy hour even thought it was minutes towards the end and making everything so quickly. They were not busy when I arrived, however someone came after me and I saw the same speed of service. The ambiance: 5/5. If you're a 90's babies you will LOVE their playlist. From Ashanti, Ja Rule, and other hip hop classics from that era it took me back to those times which was nice. The table was a nice wood grain table that was comfortable to sit at. I also appreciated the ketchup, mustard and Mayo in the containers that were completely full. I did it have to fight with it to get the sauce I wanted out. I would love to come back and try another braut and see if the sauerkraut was just a one off thing or the way they make it here.

Yelp
Currywurst is one of my husband's favorite things to eat. Whenever we see them in a market we'd order some. We visited this location in Chelsea Market for the first time in our latest trip to NYC and the experience is just okay. As Angelinos we also have this food in Grand Central Market in Downtown LA and we love that place. So by comparison, food: tastes the same, price: about the same, service: MUCH BETTER in LA. MUCH. I didn't know I could feel that I owe the waiter a million bucks by sitting at their bar at any restaurant. First time experience that even in NYC. Will not be back.

Edmond C.

Yelp
My search for authentic Currywurst continues, despite finding Berlin Currywurst. Berlin Currywurst is the best Currywurst I have had in NYC by a fairly wide margin, but for those seeking the real deal, reminiscent of Currywurst experienced in Berlin or elsewhere in Germany, your search will continue. It's not here. Berlin Currywurst is in the bustling Chelsea Market and the experience is greatly enhanced by the myriad of offerings and people in the Chelsea Market, particularly if you're there on a weekend afternoon. They have some German beers on offer in bottles and cans and a few beers, US and German on tap. Service is as friendly as can be when so many people are there. The Currywurst is served with a nice piece of bread and the Wurst is a decent portion. Fries are extra. The Wurst is about ten and the beer about five. So you're paying a bit for the Chelsea experience. The sauce is fortunately not as cloyingly sweet as I have experienced elsewhere in the City. Fortunately, they have a decent sausage with which to work and all of this will strike someone who has never had the real deal as quite good. If you've had the real deal, neither the Wurst or curry sauce will meet your expectations. Upgrade the Wurst and boost the curry would be my recommendation. If there is one note of authenticity, it is they serve it on a cardboard container with the small wooden fork and most people will find it satisfying, but as some have noted, it is not worthwhile to come here if that is your sole reason for coming to the Chelsea Market or you are coming from a distance. Good effort and three stars.

Denise A.

Yelp
Casual, unpretentious, small place in Chelsea Market to grab a bite of German food. Seating very limited. Ordered 2 German beers, currywurst, and a beet salad. All very good. Prices reasonable. Although Yelp indicates closing time as 9p.m., this place and many others said they close at 6 p.m.and some at 7 p.m.

Eric K.

Yelp
Stopped by with my 11-yr old son and ordered hot dog (spicy) on the bun, currywurst, and a German wheat beer + bottle of coke. Came out to an eye-watering $32 for just these, but I must say the portion, despite looking slightly diminutive, was substantially filling. Like that's all we ate and we were NOT hungry the rest of the evening. (Ok, we did eat ramen noodles when we came home for late night snack...) I enjoyed their spicy hotdog with German mustard & ketchup on top, and it brought me back the taste of Weisswurst & Weiss beer I recently had at Munich, Germany even though the wurst wasn't weisswurst. This currywurst was rather interesting - sort of like cut up German wurst smothered in curry sauce reminiscent of half-curry and half Sabret hotdog cart's infamous onion sauce. I don't think it should cost $10 to be honest, even if it came with a small piece of bread to eat with, and it wasn't mind-blowing tasty, but it was still quite enjoyable to eat, sitting there with my big boy. Again, $32 is 15% overpaying it, but hey, it's Chelsea market. If you'd like a quick German hotdog & beer goodness, like a man always does, then pull out the stool, sit at the counter, and enjoy yourself some currywurst with fine German bier!

Tina L.

Yelp
We ordered delivery, and even though our delivery guy took a long detour to get to us, the food was still very satisfying. The buns were super soft (not soggy despite the trip). We got the knack (had the snap), very spicy spicy curry wurst and the pork and veal sausage. Comment was actually "better than Germany." The pretzel was ok. The only thing I didn't care for were the fries. Skin on and kind of hard.

Kristen H.

Yelp
Quick friendly service at Chelsea market - sausage and a beer for $16 not open bad for NYC Seats at the bar Options to have it served in a bun or slices up as a more traditional style

Fanny W.

Yelp
SO. GOOD! I was so surprised by how tasty the bratwurst was!! Unexpectedly good! What We Ordered: + Paprika Bratwurst w/ Bun, 5/5 + Fries, 5/5 The paprika bratwurst was bursting with flavor. I might've been hungry, but it really just blew my mind. I literally wanted to come back everyday while I was in NYC. Coming back the next I'm in NYC.

Alice Z.

Yelp
The service was pretty quick. We got the classic currywurst, which came with some bread to soak up the sauce after eating the sausage. The taste was pretty good, but I would not say phenomenal. There is not that much seating around the shop, but the food is easy for walking and eating.

Steven H.

Yelp
The fresh pretzel was really good, good cold beer, service was great It's a very busy area and they handled it well.

Samantha S.

Yelp
You can do better for the price, even in Chelsea, but that said, there's probably also a lot worse you could get, too. In that way, it's nice that this place is here, and for $20, you can eat something reliably appetizing. Service was pleasant and quick. As you may've guessed if you've yet to visit, Berlin Currywurst is located inside Chelsea Market. It has a corner spot facing the main walk, two employees, and limited seating (read: one table with six stools plus a short bar with another five).

Max G.

Yelp
The obvious and appropriate thing to say is that this is the best currywurst I've had since being in Europe. A decent pretzel rounds out this light cafe option in the shopping center. Won't break your bank. Be mindful that seating is very limited and this isn't the place to expect a massive German beer selection. It's like a street vendor in Augsburg and it's great.

Asa L.

Yelp
OVERALL/WHAT TO KNOW: -Quick service -Breakfast sandwich was good, but not especially remarkable -Would definitely go back again to try something different! ARRIVAL: -I saw this place while walking through Chelsea Market and there was no line so I figured I'd grab something to go. FOOD/DRINK: -I had the breakfast sandwich, which consisted of my choice of sausage (I chose the basic pork one), grilled onions, Sauerkraut, mustard, and an over easy egg on a hero roll. -I'm not sure if there was no ingredients list posted or I just did not see it, but the breakfast sandwich did not have cheese like I was expecting/hoping. -The sandwich was good, but overall unexceptional. -The balance of flavors was surprisingly good, which is difficult when you're dealing with such powerful flavors like sauerkraut and mustard. I think the proportions of ingredients were really well-done and helped keep that balance. -This might be a personal preference, but I believe thick sausages like this should have a crispy outside with a softer, chewy inside. Mine was cooked well, but it did not have that bite I look for in a German sausage. SERVICE: -Both employees I talked to were polite, answered my questions about the menu, and gave me helpful recommendations. -They packaged my food well for me to take it to-go. ATMOSPHERE/LAYOUT: -Simple straightforward counter service. -The menu is displayed up high above the register. -The same counter that the register is on has a section with maybe 5 bar stools where people can sit and eat. -Above the grill there are pictures of some of the foods. SUGGESTIONS FOR BUSINESS: -It would be helpful if there was a list of ingredients displayed somewhere for the breakfast items as well as for the brats (like what kind of spices/seasonings are in them).

Eric C.

Yelp
Terrible. The food just isn't good. I'm not sure how they stay open selling bland sausages in a bland but congratulations. I wish they discover spice one day. I'm definitely disappointed. There is a first time for everything, but there will not be a second time for this place.

Katie Anne N.

Yelp
Mouth watering juicy plump brats! You can have it traditional curry wurst style or in a bun with onions and sauerkraut. They were delicious! They also serve German beer.

Amanda G.

Yelp
BC is nestled within Chelsea Market which is a great place to visit, although, it's busy regardless of when you go. There are always people milling about and I found it a bit hectic to navigate while pushing a Cadillac of a stroller, all by myself. I was in the area for a completely unrelated reason but the thought of a German beef brat made me quiver with excitement so, on the way out, I decided to grab a lunch to go. I am a lover of cased meat (that IS what she said) so I ordered a couple of beef brats on buns with sides. Their lunches are $8 and come with your choice of brat, either on a bun or currywurst style which seems to be sliced and sauced. I went with buns for each and the guy was really nice, separating the toppings so that the buns would stay in tact. Unfortunately, the containers were all crap and the onion and sauerkraut liquids ended up partially soaking up into the buns and soaking the entire paper bag and all the contents. Not his fault but I was a little bummed. Their fries are amazeballs though; very well-seasoned. If I could do it all over, I'd have eaten there but babes had a long day and she was not having it. We walked back to my car, sat in the AC and chilled out while I scarfed down my brat before heading back home.

Gab G.

Yelp
Solid wurst, nothing too special but definitely a quick and tasty snack. Onions and kraut were yummy. Employee who helped us out that day was friendly. Would try the fries next time.

Vyvy T.

Makayla C.

Yelp
Sausage was good but the bun was dry and cold. The food was mediocre and the service was mediocre.

James B.

Yelp
Great little place that tasted like a little bite of Berlin. The paprika currywurst was nice and tangy. It could have use a little more of the curry in the flavoring but still really good. Very hot and fresh and I liked that it came with a roll to get the extra sauce. Good vegan options as well! 4 out of 5 recommend to a friend!

Neil T.

Yelp
Not bad, but for a place that shares space with Los Tacos No. 1, underwhelming - and certainly overpriced for the amount of meat you get (and we're not taking super-sophisticated cuts of meat here). They make it look like more by wedging the bread in there. I will say the fries are pretty darned good, and you do get a lot of them, but for this price I expect a little more protein in my meal. Flavor-wise, fine, nothing too memorable... I've had as good or better currywurst from the cart that's sometimes at those generic street fairs.

Jedsada Y.

Yelp
Wurst und bier? Heck, yes! After wandering in Chelsea Market, 4 of us unanimously picked Berlin Currywurst for our quick dinner after splurging at Starbucks Reserve. Beer selection is somewhat limited with 3 draft beers, Radeberger Pilsner, Schöfferhofer Grapefruit and Erdinger Weißbier; and 3 in bottles, 1809 Berliner Weisse, Köstrizer Schwarzbier and Reissdorf Kölch. I had Nürnberger (veal + pork) Currywurst with a glass of Erdinger. I devoured the wurst in no time. The sauce was really scrumptious, plus the curry powder added a fantastic heat. The bill came out to $54.44 which was a good deal! I will definitely come back again.

Erica W.

Yelp
Super authentic! I grew up in Germany, I had a ton of these in my childhood, and these are exactly how they're made in Germany. I can easily have 10 of them. So good. Lines are too long, but I guess that's expected at Chelsea Market.

Yerin Elisa K.

Yelp
Came here on a spur because the other place we were gonna go was closed, but this was a cool first experience! My boyfriend and I got the Kase (pork and cheese) sausage in a bun with some sautéed onions and Paprika currywurst with some fries. I definitely enjoyed the currywurst as I never had anything like it! We used the Last Dab hot sauce we bought from downstairs and put some on our sausages and it was so painful and so good ;D The workers were super friendly and overall it was a good time, I recommend trying!

Landis T.

Yelp
Having spent some time in Germany, I am always on the hunt for a good Currywurst stateside. This one was quite tasty. It wasn't exactly like what I remember from overseas, but it was delicious. A nice brat, good sauce, and good curry flavor.

Bill N.

Yelp
Tasty savory and seasoned just right. The beers are cold and all sausage are fresh made to order. A must !!!

Tory C.

Yelp
The regular non-spicy pork curry wurst was very god. The bread bun was sub-standard but acceptable. I highly recommend ordering online or taking your food to go as Chelsea market can be highly hectic and crowded, and hard to find a table!

John T.

Yelp
We had a quick snack of the Tofu Brat / Kielbasa, medium heat at the little stand open for lunch on the high line. Bread was served on the side, perfect for mopping up the sauce. Quite tasty, would definitely order again.

Tutti S.

Yelp
Everything was sooo tasty! I had a fresh beet salad with a delicious vinegarette, bratwurst with curry sauce, fries and a pretzel....topped off with German beer. I loved all of it!! Sooo yummy!!!

Bing R.

Yelp
It's okay. I could not taste any curry - puzzling it's called Berlin Curry ... The only item without sodium nitrate was the tofu or the knack. There are a few stools on one side and they serve tap beer. There's fries too.

Daniel P.

Yelp
I wanted this to transport me back to my late 70s / early 80s living in West Germany - but it didn't. Not because it wasn't good - but because it simply wasn't the same as what I enjoyed as a military dependent in Ramstein village. Truly, I've never had Berlin's currywurst - and certainly not the original recipe from Herla Heuwer in Berlin. All I remember from childhood was a more thickened curry sauce - and the obligatory broschten on the side. I've ordered Currywurst from Voodoo Dog in TLH - and dammit - I wish they would simply present it the way it's meant to me (sausage sliced, bread on side) but they don't. That said, the Currywurst here certainly didn't evoke childhood memories. Instead, it came across a wee bland, and the brotchen wasn't what I remember. If you're coming here to relive your glory days in West Germany - move on and find something else. If you're coming here to enjoy a new experience that may very well mimic Herla Heuwer's creation - then by all means, continue through. It's possible that it's exactly like what it's supposed to be.

S H.

Yelp
Love this place! Vegans can choose from a bratwurst hotdog or Currywurst. Both are great. The hotdog comes with sauerkraut and onions. Sides of fries and potato tots are also Vegan. The staff are really friendly and the Chelsea Market vibe is just fantastic. Good beer choices too.

Tinashe Samantha N.

Yelp
This place has really good hotdogs! They had a lot of sausage flavors to choose from. They also had a delicious beer that we got to sample (normally not a beer person but it was really good!). The service was excellent and the chef was really helpful with choosing sausage flavors we would like!

Dan P.

Yelp
My number 1 go to street food spot in NYC! Located in Chelsea Market, they have the best German Currywurst in NYC. I usually get the Knack Brat Currywurst paired with their draft Erdinger beer. I highly recommend this spot for a quick meal or snack and I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Definitely check them out!

Ngoc P.

Yelp
Ughhh why are you so expensive? I could literally have 10 of these by myself. The currywurst sauce is amazing; they don't hold back on the spice nor the curry flavor which usually ends up happening in other places that attempt currywurst. I can't say if its authentic but it's definitely tasty. My favorite was the pork/veal sausage and I had a try of the pork/cheese/pepper one too. Super spicy and cheesy, I liked it but the pork/veal one was a clear winner. The fries are also fantastic. Super crunchy and holds up to the sauce. I don't typically put mayo on my fries but this is a must-have. When in Rome right? It helps cut the spicy/curry flavor down too. They've got a couple drinks on tap a well as bottles to wash down the heavy food which was a nice surprise. Beliner Currywurst is typically not super crowded compared to all the other restaurants in Chelsea Market so its a good option and a must-try a taste of Berlin's streetfood!

Jaimee M.

Yelp
We moved to The Slaughtered Lamb on West 4th St to walk off some Brat, play a few games of MegaTough and write this review. It's 90degrees and 3rd of July. That's Tip #1. Chelsea Market is packed... almost always. But on a holiday, most New Yorkers leave town and we only waited a moment before getting two seats at the eight seat bar, besides the cooks we were the only English voices but we were there to eat German food and drink a Pilsner so that's the other language that mattered was heat level 1,2,3 or 4. "Kos" had the Tofu Kielbasa Hash at a level 3 which I found out is a Habanero Spice. They literally would not give me the Level 4 Ghost Pepper spice. I believe I could have taken the heat, Level 3 I gave me a little sniffle but I wasn't in tears. The dish was potato's, spiced tofu crafted into faux sausage and a fried egg. Told you fried eggs make the world better. It was $10 but it's Chelsea Market and NYC so that's forgivable to me and I didn't eat the entire thing. The sauerkraut was really light and it blended really well with the dish. Maybe too many potatoes. I did.... drink my entire beer. "Tello" had the Chicken Sausage Traditional which came with sauerkraut and onions. Sausage was favorable, sauerkraut not overpowering. The mix was juicy. The bun went well with the sausage but the problem is there is too much bun. (That's actually the reason Kos went for the hash... we saw the buns in advance and she knew she'd never drink her beer if eating a bun that size) When spying on the other sausage options Tello thought the buns were better suited to the others. No puns here, just buns. Sausages were $8 and you could add an egg for $1. Just saying. The fries looked good. And you also had an option to order the sausage currywurst style. Next time. Because we'd go back.... Next time there's a national holiday.

James R.

Yelp
Came here for a quick bite with the gf. We shared the currywurst lunch with a bratwurst. Having been to Germany, I found the product to be authentic to something you'd find in Berlin. The sauce was tangy, curry-y, and spicy. The bread was food and allowed us to sop up the sauce. I'd def come back if in the area.

Jim B.

Yelp
Snack bar - with beer - inside Chelsea Market. Staff are hustling; it's a busy place. Sausages are served cut into rounds with your selection of sauce - heat level. Worth a stop if you are in the neighborhood. Fries are made from scratch and fried twice.

James I.

Yelp
We stopped for a quick snack and drink. I got the currywurst with a level 3 out of 4 heat level and my Mom got the pretzel and beer. The currywurst was tasty, they had 7 options including vegetarian for the wurst and the sauce was good. The heat was good, not horribly hot, but manageable, I'll try 4 next time. The pretzel was a pretzel, good snack. Recommend as a pit stop.

David K.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite spots in Chelsea Market. The decor isn't anything to write home about, but it has delicious currywurst and fries, as well as some German and local beers on draft. The prices are reasonable, which makes it a good lunch location if you are in Chelsea Market.

Dewan A.

Yelp
Excellent! 1) Currywurst is my favorite German food. I will recommend getting the paprika sausage. 2) Got the German fries as well. Although it was good, but it is very expensive. 3) Overall, it was good. Will come back.

Steven T.

Yelp
Wife and I ordered currywurst and the breakfast sandwich as well as a grapefruit beer. All are amazing. Service was really friendly and attentive. I changed to currywurst half way thru the cooking, the cook was happy to oblige with a smile. Marcus was awesome. Updated on the same day before closing: came back one more time just before closing, thats how good it was!

Erik K.

Yelp
Came on a summer Sunday around noon. No wait. Ordered the sausage hash, with Nurnburg sausage well done. Went with the 3 out of 4 Currywurst sauce. For a guy who likes spicy food, I can't fathom how hot the four is. Was a tad spicier this. I was expecting, but within the range of enjoyable. Has a sunny side up egg on top, was a gooey, wonderful mess. Highly recommend. PS - saw a review or two stating that this is not authentic enough. I've been to Germany, and admittedly it's been several years since I had "authentic" Currywurst. But it was close enough to what I remember (and was,in any event, fantastic).

Juan M.

Yelp
I was strolling through chelsea market and stumbled across this small store! I was just looking for a small bites to fill up my hungry stomach. It was pretty crowded and it has a long line that is why I stopped and decided to try their foods. They have different sausages with different sauces and a roll on the side. They also sell different kind of sides and draught beers. I decided to order their curry wurst with their tomato sauce. All I can say the sausage is really good! But it is not worth it to wait, the wait is pretty long, service is pretty bad (server is a little bit rough). I am just glad they didnt mixed up my order. The store is quite small and probably if people looking for this place it is quite hard to find. I dont think it is worth it to go just for this sausage! If you ate planning to get another foods or just to check out chelsea market you need to go to this place. If you just want to try this place, save your time and go somewhere else.
