"Bear Mountain Lodge has had many lives since it was first built in 1928. Back then, it was a school for unruly boys from the East Coast; later it became a country club and hotel for the well-heeled; and before artist-turned-innkeeper Linda Brewer bought the property five years ago and turned it into a 10-room lodge, it was owned by the Nature Conservancy. It’s fitting, then, that nature is the main attraction at the lodge, which sits on 178 acres and has horses, cows, and chickens, plus birds and butterflies and a pond that’s home to the endangered Chiricahua Leopard Frog. The Gila National Forest—at 2.7 million acres, the largest wilderness area in the Southwest—is the lodge’s back yard. If you find yourself missing civilization, Silver City is just over three miles away, but escape is really the point here. And while there is Wi-Fi, there aren’t any televisions."

Excellent place to stay - highly recommend! We were visiting the area for hiking and recently stayed here for the 1st time. The rooms are very nice, great service, and beautiful location set up in the trees on the edge of Silver City. The morning breakfast and coffee were outstanding. You will enjoy it.

A beautiful lodge and scenery, with friendly and knowledgeable staff. We had two delicious breakfasts, one packed lunch for a day excursion with Miriam, our excellent guide to the Gila Cliff Dwellings, and one delicious dinner. The lodge grounds had unique sculptures in various places. Inside the lodge, there was very nice artwork and sculptures as well. If you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing getaway with beautiful surroundings inside and out, this is the place for you.

Amazing retreat Totally enjoyed our 4 night stay at the end of March. The lodge had a great vibe and the grounds were amazing to take hikes or just relax with coffee on the porch. The included breakfast was a hit and we enjoyed the variety of food each morning. We stayed in the room called "Cabeza De Vaca", a large room with balcony which was comfortable and generous for our stay. The nearby town of Silver City was eclectic and fun...we enjoyed visiting the museums and nearby restaurants. The staff was available for anything we needed and the breakfast servers were attentive and congenial. Exactly what we had hoped this place would be and highly recommended. Ps: we accidentally left sunglasses in the room upon departure and the Lodge arranged to have them mailed back to us in Texas...this speaks to their caring nature. Look no further if desiring a quiet getaway from major tourist areas.

I'd been wanting to come to Bear Mountain Lodge for many years, so I finally got my chance on a recent Southwest roadtrip with my sister. We we got such restful sleep and the 7 deer outside our cabin were a special treat to watch. The breakfasts were divine and the dinner was a special night for us. It felt like going on a retreat! A bonus was seeing all the art made by artists in the region.

Our 2nd stay at Bear Mountain Lodge and just as wonderful as our first! First stay was in Wren's Nest separate casita from the lodge. It is nice and private, cozy with a large bathroom, just right with 2 beds. On our second visit we stayed in the Leopold room upstairs in the lodge. Outstanding views from large windows and a private balcony that had 2 chairs and a small table. The views are incredible to see the stars at night and the sunrise each morning. The room was larger than we expected from the photo's and the bathroom was huge. What's even more special about BML is the people, all staff are very friendly and helpful. The artwork inside the lodge is plentiful, lots of comfy area's to sit and 2 large fireplaces. The dining area for inside and outside is very welcoming and comfortable. The food is delicious and on the healthy side too. Horses, cows, chickens are there to visit within a short stroll down to the barn and plenty of trails to hike with more beautiful views. The cherry on top of this is the resident cat Mui Mui whom we fell in love with! Can't say enough good things about Bear Mountain Lodge!

Google
The lodge, owners, staff, and menagerie are a fantastic treat. The meals were beautifully presented in their art-filled dining room, and Delish! Yum. Loved the art, trails, scenery and sense of place with a varied history. So appreciated the friendly service (all felt warm, inviting, and top-notch) plus all the attention to details made it feel extra special.

A medical issue raised its head when I checked in. The care and support I received went well beyond any call of duty. The place is beautiful, curated with quality art throughout. The room was like a luxurious home with a balcony over looking a vast expanse of nature. The breakfast was delectable. But above all of this, in the words of AmEx commercials — the sense of security and care was priceless. Such good good people. My deepest gratitude.

We have stayed here many times, always loved it, but this 2 night stay was particularly enjoyable. Breakfasts are always exceptional but we were particularly lucky this time because they had a special Valentine's Day dinner menu. All elements--soup, salad, entree and especially the brownies--were excellent. The out of town location is great because you can wander off in several different directions for a hike on National Forest land. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Bear Mountain Lodge is the perfect way to round out a road trip through southern New Mexico or Arizona. The expansive property is scenic, tranquil, and "just remote enough" (town is only a short drive, but the lodge offers all you'll need to relax and feel a million miles away from it all). Our casita was spacious, well-appointed, and had an excellent sunset vantage, and the lodge itself is a delight, with for-sale local art featured in every room. It was a treat to enjoy breakfast and dinner on the shaded patio, and we spent the hours in between ambling around the property, including to the corral and along the nature trails (some dotted with art installations as well). You'll feel at home the minute you land and meet the gracious hosts and staff -- a stay at Bear Mountain Lodge is a true delight!

Yelp
We made a reservation 6 months in Advance for our 20th wedding anniversary. We asked for A Beef Rib Eye of Filet Mignon on the menu. We were assured all was good, including wedding cake and champagne. We called a couple of days before our anniversary dinner & all promises were out the window...serving Salmon which I already told her I was allergic to Salmon. So how rude mean and unprofessional after all the customers, meetings and dinners we had there when I was the Chamber of Commerce Director for 6 years. We went to Albertsons, bought a whole tenderloin from Angel, got our strawberries and Champagne there too. I'll never ever understand some business owners who play that Queen of Mean Card. Our kids spent a week there, as a gift from us....before we were treated so badly. So how mean. Don't trust her...to keep her word on your special occasion

Yelp
We enjoyed a really relaxing stay at Bear Mountain Lodge. Away from the busy part of Silver City, Bear Mountain Lodge was the perfect place to relax and unwind. Not only are the rooms spacious and comfortable, the whole lodge is decorated with original art from local artists. The walls are covered with paintings, weavings and multi-media artwork. Very friendly hosts!

Yelp
As far as Bed and Breakfasts go this is a good one! The food is top notch - like the shining star of the experience. The servers are really nice people - friendly, kind, and hardworking - their attitude adds to the relaxed feeling and ambiance. I felt like I could just sit and eat and enjoy slowly which was delightful. There was continuous coffee, tea, and cookies available which was fun and delicious! Beautiful scenery and it's fascinating that it's not more than 10 minutes from town - you really are in the quiet of the country but within a few minutes you are back in town. We saw deer from the dining room. There were hiking trails that on a revisit I would check out. Some temperature issues at times where I felt like I was too hot in my room. At night my bed was really really warm - like the mattress felt like I was sleeping on a heating pad. Perhaps a box fan in the room would help. My other personal preference- there is lots of original artwork everywhere that has artist information and prices - which is super cool. However, my complaint is totally personal preference - I am not a huge fan of the mystic side of New Mexican artisans - I don't want to be judged so I wouldn't elaborate - I would prefer that to not be in the room I sleep. I should balance that by saying some of the artwork was so beautiful I literally considered a purchase. It was a good experience - I do recommend.

Yelp
Full disclosure, was not a lodging guest. I visited the restaurant for the Christmas Day dinner. And it was SUPERB!!! Everything was wonderful. The servers were friendly, helpful, knowledgeable. They make you feel so welcome and just like family. The ambiance is warm and cozy. And the food was amazing. It is not exaggeration to say that its one of the best meals that I've ever had. On your visit to Silver City, make a point to at least visit the cafe when its open to the public. I know that on my next visit to Silver City, I am going not just eat there, I'm going to stay there!

Yelp
We chose to stay in the Wren's Nest, a room not connected to any other. There is no WiFi in this room, which we knew from the get go, but it is available in their lobby. Also, no kitchen (not even a mini refrigerator or microwave), which we also figured out in advance. You should come up with your own creative options there (snacks, cooler--ice available in their kitchen, etc.) What you DO get is a gourmet breakfast fit for queens... every morning we had coffee, OJ, fresh fruit with yogurt and homemade granola, AND a main dish that varies every day. We've had a green chili omelette, potato pancakes, blueberry corn pancakes, zucchini pancakes, thick cut bacon, sausage... usually so much food that we didn't need to worry about lunch. We had dinner there one evening and felt like the most special guests. (You need to request this 24 hours in advance.) We also ordered a bottle of wine with dinner which we were allowed to finish later at our convenience, anywhere on their property. Oh, and I mentioned that I can't eat bell peppers once and they acknowledged and accommodated that every single meal, without my having to bring it up. Every single interaction with staff was incredible. All were friendly and eager to please. We felt like welcome guests. We loved walking around the grounds--so much art (inside, as well) and beauty. It is obvious that they take pride in their surroundings. They have a labyrinth nearby, which we used a few times. We took the Old Windmill Trail behind the lodge one day, and found it to be a bit longer than the 1.7 miles and struggled due to heat, humidity and altitude. (NOT because we were out of shape or anything, lol!) It was beautiful and worth it, but bring extra water just in case. You get to see the Million Bones project installation, as well as some beautiful vistas and a "contemplation point". We ventured into downtown Silver City (very short drive) on occasion and found it to be charming, but perhaps a bit floundering. Lots of lovely art for sale, and other random shops. Mostly we enjoyed the tranquility and permission to rest and relax as we took in the pleasant surroundings. We also took in many naps, as this was just the kind of place to let go and to just be in.

Yelp
Silver City was a stop we planned for a road trip through the southwest. We chose this stop because of its proximity to many beautiful outdoor areas including the Gila Cliff Dwellings. Bear Mountain Lodge popped up in initial online searches for lodging and I read many positive reviews. Why I chose this accommodation: *looked like it was in a quiet area with beautiful surroundings *reviews noted cleanliness *breakfast included (which other reviews mentioned as stellar) What I thought stood out after my 2 night stay: *reviews were right! clean, beautiful property and AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS breakfast *we booked reservations 24 hours in advanced to eat dinner at the lodge. Also very yummy and I highly recommend. The desert was my favorite food item of the entire road trip (tres leches cake). *the property has fantastic bird watching (four types of jays and many more) *lodge is very cozy, staff will start up a warm fire in the common area for you *plenty and games and books available if you want to do something indoors (we played Scrabble both nights next to a roaring fire - romantic) *little details that go the extra mile like free lip balm in your roam for the dry weather and extra hats and umbrellas if you need for a hike *the art gallery has many beautiful items by local artisans. I purchased a pair of earrings and note cards. *self serve coffee, tea and cookies available all day in the dining area *our room and private bathroom were spacious and quiet. *livestock on the property. I love horses and getting to pet them and be around them brightened my day. We really enjoyed our stay. The owners and staff are friendly and accommodating. Booking was easy over the phone. Would stay again.

Yelp
My wife and I have stayed at Bear Mountain Lodge a handful of times and always enjoyed the ambiance and pastoral setting and meals. It is some of the most expensive lodging in the area and typically worth it. Not this time, unfortunately. We found the maintenance to be slipping. We were moved from our booked room to another room (a cabin) because of a leaking bathroom sink. The Wren's Nest is spacious and comfortable, but the heater was not working. Fortunately, a small stove kept us warm enough. The toilet seat in the bathroom was loose as was the sink faucet. At this price point, you don't expect that. We had dinner reservations for the 6:30 seating and showed on time. There were few others in the restaurant. The service was okay, but the pork loin and chicken dinners were subpar and looked like we were getting the last of the food. They were down to only one chocolate dessert with the lemon dessert a sad substitute. Breakfast the next morning wasn't much better. When we checked out, we were not asked how we enjoyed the stay or if we enjoyed our meals. When I emailed the owner several days later about our disappointing experience, we got no response. Not very hospitable. I certainly hope this was just an "off" weekend and Bear Mountain Lodge will regain its footing. For the cost of the accommodations and meals, one expects and deserves more.

Yelp
I don't know how you could improve on the Bear Mountain Lodge. I guess you could outfit the beds with 1500-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets or something, but it would be a mistake. No reason to mess with a small, quiet, warm, beautiful inn. The BML is managed by the owners, one of whom lives on-site. Owner Jeff is the perfect host and innkeeper. Owner John is a Jack of All Trades, a fun personality who pops up at random. We stayed in a room in Maya's Retreat, which has four guest rooms that open onto a comfortable common living room. In the evenings we would wander over to the main room of the lodge and enjoy a toddy in front of the fire. Our room was large, as was our well-appointed bath. We visited over Christmas and had the opportunity to enjoy the lodge's Christmas Eve Dinner (fabulous posole) and Christmas Day Supper (stuffed pork tenderloin). Breakfasts every day began with fruit, yogurt and granola, followed by a main dish that might be waffles, a quiche or a frittata, offered with bacon or sausage. Generally, the food is not gourmet-grade; it is extra-good, solid, creative, appetizing fare, prepared expertly and presented well. Meals tend to favor local ingredients and traditions. There is always a vegetarian option. The posole was the exception to the good-but-not-oh-my-God standard: prepared from dried posole/hominy (not canned), it was absolutely interplanetary. The staff is excellent, attentive and caring. The lodge is immaculate, beautifully designed and impeccably appointed. The entire property is one big art gallery, from the lobby to the dining room to guest rooms. We came away with some block-print napkins, two small paintings and a very odd terra cotta skull for Day of the Dead. The room prices are absurd. They are at least $40 low, prompting me to do something that I have never done before: I urged Jeff to raise the rates. Right after I checked out. If you want to complain about something, try this. The lodge does not have a bar, a swimming pool, tennis courts, a zip-line, a spa, or Wayne Newton singing in the lounge. It does not have televisions or phones (yay!), though it does have okay wi-fi. It is a place to stay while you enjoy all of the outdoor wonders that New Mexico has to offer. It is a comfortable, charming retreat. When we left, we gave Jeff big hugs and thanked him for his gracious hospitality.

Yelp
Think of the restaurant, Cafe Oso Azul, when planning holiday meals. It offers take out and splendid menus. Our Thanksgiving meal was extraordinary, convenient and reasonably priced. Website has menus for Christmas and Christmas eve. And look for New Year's offerings. Maybe we will be able to dine in by then. Even more special in the lovely atmosphere of the dining room--

Yelp
Bear Moutain Lodge was the perfect weekend getaway. My husband and I spent New Year's eve and the weekend at the Lodge, a former Nature Conservancy site at the outside edge of town. It snowed pretty heavily the day before, so Silver City was pretty much shut down. The Lodge was cozy, comfortable and wonderfully hospitable. Several of the owners were on-site, working the holiday weekend. We had excellent service for the NYE dinner - brought our own champagne, as they warned us the liquor license wasn't in as of yet (appreciate that!). Tasty meals and good knowledge about the surrounding area. Most of the town's restaurants closed early due to the weather and made no promises about when they'd reopen! The Lodge management stepped up and made sure everyone was taken care of for meals, regardless of whether it had been promised or not during the reservation process. Truly hospitable, a gorgeous setting. Quiet with roaring fireplaces in the main room, fun and fabulous art as part of the decor and for sale in the Lodge gift shop, great walking paths - can't wait to go back when it's warm!

Yelp
This is our go to place for Sunday brunch and holiday meals. The staff is very friendly. The food is exceptional. There is always a vegetarian entree and this carnivore has fallen in love with their eggplant parmigiana. Last week I had the most tender duck confit in my 80 year old life.

Jamie B.

Yelp
This is a wonderfully decorated B&B on the edge of Silver City (it's 3 miles off the main drag, but on a good road). We stayed for the weekend in a little outbuilding called the Wren's Nest, which has two bedrooms and its own bathroom and so was perfect and private. The proprietors of the place used to own the Blue Dome Gallery in Silver, and they've moved all their wonderful art pieces to the B&B, so it;s really fun to look at the art everywhere, and you can actually buy the items right off the wall if you so choose. The men who run the establishment are friendly and solicitous and forthcoming with information, although we didn't need much info since we are somewhat local. Breakfast is provided every morning and it was delicious and filling, although we were quite amused that what was described to us as "hash" was probably recycled stew from a previous dinner, with an egg on top (it still tasted good, but LOL!). The second day they made us an egg strata that was just picture perfect. The B&B has its own hiking trails and you might see some deer. Very pleasant way to spend the weekend; we hope to go back!

Yelp
I have been a customer of the restaurant (open for holiday meals, serving pricey but decent food) and also had visiting family stay there upon my recommendation. Lovely facilities, but in my opinion/based on a recent interaction, the lodge is encumbered by deeply hostile customer service practices. The owner is "a private person who does not enjoy sharing [her] property with members of the public" (her words)... Was recently hiking on the lodge-adjacent trails, leaving by dusk (which was the posted time for non-guests to offload). She came out onto the trail to inform me, in the most withering, imperious, disdainful tones she could muster, that members of the public were to leave by six and that I was not welcome to be there. Her demeanor was unaccountably, shockingly hateful from the start... I responded that I was sorry and indeed already leaving, but that this information did not match her posted guidelines for public use. And then... she simply banned me from the premises. The lodge is a venerable old place, with gorgeous surrounds and tasteful old west style. But these offerings were in place long before the current owners, and sans the veneer of hostility. A most unfortunate experience at an establishment of supposed hospitality

Clayton L.

Yelp
Nice place to stay. Beautiful area, their walking trail is nice but a little strange with all the ceramic bones, but I understand their cause. Food was good, and host was nice person. I'd stay again for sure

Jeff K.

Yelp
Last-minute reservation for 2 rooms, for me, my wife, my sister, her daughter, and her granddaughter. What a wonderful place!! The room was very comfortable, and we even had a nice thunderstorm roll through around 5:00am, with lots of lightning & thunder. The included breakfast was spectacular! So much better than the usual "continental breakfast" that so many hotels have these days. The host & her staff were very friendly & helpful. The breakfast server, who had only been there a short time, was very accommodating, and took great care to make sure we had everything we needed. Even though we only spent one night, I look forward to our next visit!

D L.

Yelp
Nobody ever answered the phone or returned any missed calls (yes I left a message with my name and number and spoke very clear and slow just as they instructed on the answering machine) I was hoping to pay for a room for my friends who were supposed to be getting married. I did call about a month in advance and I tried a few more times but same result. So I went with another place which had fantastic customer service and gave the happy newlyweds a mini honeymoon to remember.

Kathy D.

Yelp
Love this place, my 3rd year in a row going and spending a three day weekend with family! Rooms are wonderful, breakfast is Delicious. Owners are great, nice, informative and will help you in any way. Great hiking trails right on the property, and a book in each room with suggestions on what to see and do while staying in Silver City. A must is to hike up to contemplation point and see the new bench in the shape of a giant cat

Darren P.

Yelp
I loved this place. Everything is so cozy, from the tea to the fire places. This was a perfect winter getaway with our family. The owners are so nice and welcoming; you can tell they take pride in their lodge. Hope I can come back!

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
The Bear Mountain Lodge was one of the most delightful lodging experiences of our lives, and we have had many good ones. It offers the intimacy of a bed & breakfast with the privacy and amenities of a deluxe hotel. Our hosts were welcoming and accommodating, and the rooms were comfortable, well-appointed, and spotlessly clean. From our balcony, we had a view of the mountains, and from their lovely porch, we enjoyed more hummingbirds than I've ever seen at one time in my life. I felt the layers of stress peel off as I entered the front door. This is a place we want to come back to.

Zach M.

Yelp
Loved this place! Room was very clean the the decor was nice. Breakfast was a treat. No TV. Whoo hoo. They do have wifi. The natural setting and scenery are a pleasant escape from city hotels. I would gladly come back and visit for a longer stay. I didn't realize that Bear Mountain Lodge was dog friendly so bring your well behaved pooch to enjoy the hiking and relaxed environment.

Sara D.

Yelp
We were sorry we could only stay one night at this wonderful lodge! The owners were delightful and very accommodating. There was attention to detail as well as aesthetics. We had a wonderful hike right on the property. I definitely want to return. Samara from Oakland, CA

Yelp
Bear Mountain Lodge is the catalyst which has prompted me to sit down & write this Yelp review. Bear Mountain Lodge is a slice of heaven on earth. We were able to sneak away for a far too rare time off and I'm so thankful it was at Bear Mountain Lodge. We were warmly welcomed by one of the owners who was so gracious and fun! When we entered our room...oh my goodness! The pics online don't do it justice. We stayed in the Georgia O'Keefe suite...cozy, comfortable and just lovely. The balcony and view...super sweet! The bed so comfy. The jacuzzi tub w/ bath salts...why did I leave??? The breakfast we had each morning (included in the price of the room) was fresh, filling & delish! The art work throughout was gorgeous. The breeze, calm, peace, deer outside early evening, stars abounding, great walking trails....and the simply wonderful staff made us feel right at home. I cannot wait to go back. Thank you all so much! We have limited time to be away from our own business and you made that time so special.

Emily M.

Yelp
We lived in an art gallery for three days and found new treasures every time we entered, or re-entered a room. As the locals say, "they will spoil you up there," we felt in calm luxury. Trails surround the area and artistic treasures hide along the walk as surprises to brighten the natural beauty. A truly memorable time!

Joseph B.

Yelp
This is an outstanding place to stay. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The setting (trails right out the door) is spectacular. The bathtub very comfortable. The breakfast good. The art on the walls are original local (?) artists. We were there when it snowed and then the next day the sun came out... amazing. We got a January special, which dropped the price quite a bit.

Bud M.

Yelp
Revisited after 4 years and found that this B&B remains above average. If anything it has improved with age. Great location I.e.,picturesque, quiet and very accommodating hosts. Can highly recommend.

James N.

Yelp
We enjoyed a lovely 3-day getaway with close friends who are old hands at this wonderful B&B. We stayed in Myra's Retreat, a beautifully decorated and appointed 4 bedroom cottage with a central living room. Owner Linda and her staff couldn't have been more gracious, and the breakfasts, and the one dinner, we had were delicious. We are looking forward to our next opportunity to visit the Bear Mountain Lodge!

Amy G.

Yelp
We had a lovely three-day stay at this hidden gem. Great accommodations and an excellent breakfast. The grounds are magnificent with hiking trails and sculptures. The lodge houses a relaxed art gallery with a variety of interesting works both local and national. The artist/owner/hostess Linda (and Liza and George) could not be warmer and more knowledgable of the region. We hope to be back!

Frank P.

Yelp
We stayed there a year ago, and I'd give it ten stars if I could. We went for a meeting held there, and everything worked beautifully for both work and play. Good food, good setting, nice trails, nice people, nice art too. A winner in every way.

rob w.

Yelp
Ok, we were visiting after Thanksgiving. Never been to the area before, but we were interested in the Silver City area. Friends told us about this Inn. Apparently under new ownership. Very nice grounds and out buildings. Lobby area is remarkable. However, they should close the restaurant portion. Whoever is cooking.....is NOT. My wife and I went for lunch. This was 3 days after Thanksgiving. There were 4 items on the menu. 3 were turkey, and one was some type of hash. No salads, no soup. And the price was listed as $22.00. WHAT?? No side dishes, nada. There was a crudite type offering with veggies to start. But, no way was that a reasonable offering. No wonder there was no one in the dining room. If we stayed at the hotel here, we'd necessarily need to eat all our meals in town. The Inn is in a beautiful area and we may come back. I'd be interested to see who is running the restaurant, because it could be so much more. Rob W
