In downtown San Diego! enjoying a night out with family having dinner. This place was perfect open space, bar, pet friendly, lounging area, pool table area and plenty of tv screens all you can imagine to have a good relaxing evening. Service was excellent, fast and friendly we ordered two pizza pies the meaty lover and the month house special which was the thanksgiving pie. Both pizzas were light tasty well balanced flavors the ricotta cheese really took it to another level on the meat lover and thanksgiving was the mashed potato great hit. I had a basic mule, smooth strong flavor that came along well with dinner. Great place to come and enjoy a meal with friends or family.

I recently visited Basic bar pizza and had an incredibly disappointing experience. The service was downright awful. Our waiter was extremely rude and dismissive, making us feel unwelcome from the moment we sat down. She seemed annoyed whenever we asked for anything, and his attitude really put a damper on the entire meal. The food might have been decent, but it was hard to enjoy given the poor service. I expect a basic level of courtesy when dining out, and this place failed to deliver. I would not recommend basic to anyone looking for a pleasant dining experience. There are plenty of other restaurants that offer both good food and respectful service.

In town for work. Walked by and gave it a try. Bartender recommended the East Village pizza. It was very good. The meatballs are cut into thin slices and they taste great. I took one star off because bar service was a bit slow. It's not busy and there are 2 or 3 bartenders. I still had to request water and drink refills as I am eating the pizza. It's definitely worth a try, just be prepared to wait a bit for drink refills.

I grew up 15 minutes from New Haven so this is the pizza of my youth. My family and I come here almost once a week and my kids crush a large on their own. In my humble opinion, it’s the best pizza in San Diego. We’re sad to see them close but excited to see the new restaurant. Please keep us all posted on the progress!

I practically live at this place ever since I've moved downtown. There is usually not a lot of people here, but enough to where it's still a vibe. It's pretty easy to get a seat at the bar during the week, and on weekends there is a solid crowd of people who are coming for either pre-gaming or a post gaming pizza. Typically what you'll do is order at the bar, and they will deliver your pizza and cocktails to your table. I'm a huge fan of the many mocktail options and really solid size of this thin crust pizza. They usually will have DJs or other kinds of music playing, and the lighting is really nice and muted. I bring all kinds of people here - - from my friends, to my significant other for a date night, to my mother when she visits... She has repeatedly asked to keep coming back here because it is that fun and casual of an environment.

First time here with my coworker. The vibe of the place was relaxing and chill. The food was great. We ordered the veggie pizza with sausage. Delicious, freshly made. The gentleman who served our food had positive attitude and respectful. He cleaned our table when he saw us trying to move over used tray and glasses. No server around so you have to order your drinks and food from the bar. However, service is fast and our food was served pretty quick. Will definitely go back here, and specially because it's walking distance from my workplace.

I found myself at Basic Bar/Pizza during my recent trip to San Diego, and it was definitely a great find! This place has a real "blink and you'll miss it" vibe, tucked away but buzzing with energy. It's got that perfect dive bar feel, which I always enjoy because it usually means a more relaxed, less crowded atmosphere. But don't let that fool you--this place was lively and packed with people, all enjoying the cool, grunge-inspired ambiance. The Drinks: The bartenders, Adan and Anh, were fantastic. They were super helpful in guiding me through their drink selection, and I ended up trying the Harlan Hazy IPA, which was absolutely delicious. A great choice if you're into hazy IPAs with a smooth, fruity kick! The Food: I was pretty hungry, so I asked what they were known for, and they recommended their pizzas. I went with the "So Meaty" pizza, which had mozzarella, bacon, pepperoni, sausage, fresh basil, and ricotta. Let me tell you, this pizza was on point! It wasn't greasy, the presentation was on another level, and it came out much quicker than I expected. Every bite was packed with flavor, and it was so good that I ended up taking the leftovers back to my hotel. It really hit the spot! The Experience: What made this place stand out was the way Adan and Anh made me feel welcome. Coming into town and not knowing anyone can be tough, but they made me feel right at home. I think anyone who's traveled alone knows how important it is to find a spot where you can just relax and enjoy the vibe. They really nailed that here. This place was actually recommended to me by the folks at Half Door Brewing Company (another great spot, by the way!), and I'm glad I took their advice. Basic Bar/Pizza has a great selection of beers and some truly fantastic pizza. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in town for more good food, drinks, and those laid-back dive bar vibes. Cheers!

One of my favorite places to get pizza in San Diego. If you like thin and quality ingredients this place is perfect. I order the Margherita. Right across the street from Petco field. Always a nice crowd in afternoon.

Always good times, delicious food and great drinks at Basic. Last night we celebrated with a surprise birthday party in their lounge, semi-private space. Jodee from their events/catering group was a pleasure to work with and all done through email messaging. She made it very easy to book, secure the reservation and provide a sample order to help with planning. Their caesar salad with chicken was a hit and of course all their pizzas, especially the mashed potato with bacon. Our server Jenny really made this milestone birthday party extra special. She was friendly, attentive and a such a genuine person and joy to be around. We had a party of 30 and she kept the food and drinks flowing. Her exceptional service created such a warm and fun atmosphere to celebrate my husband's 50th birthday. Thank you Jenny!!! She is definitely an asset to the Urbn group!

First time eating at this pizza bar after walking around for hours during SDCC, it was so good and it really hit the spot. My friends who had been before said the pizzas were big and good to share but I didn't expect them to be as wide as the tables lol! They were thin crust and absolutely packed with cheese, fellow lactose intolerant folks beware. Their unique toppings are pretty interesting, I really loved the mac n cheese pizza and was glad that we tried it! I'd come back again to try something with the garlic mashed potatoes on top.

This is probably my favorite pizza I've had in San Diego, seriously I dream about their So Meaty pizza weekly, but unfortunately I've had a couple of strange/not so great interactions at Basic that take my review down from 4.5 stars to 3.5 stars. It mostly comes down to too many drunk people inside a small ish restaurant, especially after baseball games, that can make the environment not so great. I'm all for drunk fun, I love getting pitchers there with friends, but in a restaurant setting some things aren't acceptable. I've been yelled at by drunk men for having a dog there, even though dogs are welcome and always present, and instead of management making me feel welcome, they asked if I was ready to leave (even though I was about to order). That experience put such a sour taste in my mouth, I haven't returned to the restaurant and only order to go now. TLDR: pizza is phenomenal, pitchers are a great deal, but be wary of drunk people left unchecked by security and management.

Pizza was really really good, dough fresh and it is thin but it's also delicious and flavorful went there before a concert @ Petco and we stranded in like for like 5 minutes and were able to get a table. Also got a drink - old fashioned and that was pretty neat. I believe I got 2 lol- I definitely will be back for more pizza ! This is more of an upbeat place full of people and noise so don't expect anything romantic and intimate out of a date here'

We went here before going to a Padres game on a weekday. We came here in a group of 6 plus a toddler without reservations. They have a good selection of pizza, beer, and others on their menu and you will find something for you including unique finds. They have a bar area, indoor and outdoor. It was busy that time but they were kind enough to find us a couch because we have a kid with us. The service was good and fast and it's just a cool place to hang out when you're in the area especially if you are in a huge group.

Our waiter was awesome! It was our first time visiting so we mention to our waiter that we were in the mood for something spicy & sweet pizza. She recommended the monthly pizza. I believe it had barbecue chicken, pepperoni, jalapeño, cheese, marinara sauce, and some type of spicy honey on top. Pizza was super delicious. The atmosphere was perfect for a Friday night. We ended up ordering a pitcher of Paloma to go along with our pizza. Overall, it was a great experience.

After the concert, we hit up this restaurant for some late-night pizza. It was awesome, perfect for happy hour, and they even had a billiard table next to the bar.

The restaurant was very busy after the game. Our server greeted us quickly despite the level of people there and was quick to take orders and bring drinks. We were lucky to get an outdoor table under one of the oak trees. We ordered the bacon and mashed potato pizza which was incredible! There are plenty of other options on the menu and lots of tasty drinks.

We made this an essential stop before Friday Padres game! Located right outside the stadium with tons of seating available. Service is extremely efficient and staff is very friendly. Menu is SIMPLE- gorgeous we ordered a large pepperoni pizza and were so pleased, this is some of the best in San Diego (in my humble opinion). Thin crusted and very flavorful. Can't wait to come here again; don't miss out!

My sister, son, and I came for dinner before a concert at Petco Park. We were surprised by the relatively short wait of about 15 minutes. The place had good reviews so we decided to give it a try. We were sat down and greeted within a few minutes. We received water and asked a couple questions about the menu. Mainly we were curious if we could do half and half on a large pizza with different sauces (you cannot). We ended up ordering two small pizzas and a salad. While we were waiting I noticed my glass for water had tomato sauce in multiple spots so I asked for a clean glass. The waiter was nice and brought a new glass however this one had lip stains. So I chose not to drink anything, but my sister asked for a new glass for a second time. Luckily this time it was clean. About 30 minutes later, my son's small pepperoni pizza arrived. The person who brought the order said here is your pizza and we said we also had a salad and another pizza and he said no, and said he would go check. Our waiter came about 5 minutes later and said he forgot to put in the salad and would go get one quickly. About 10 minutes later our second pizza arrived. The waiter than remembered the salad and went to get it. During this time while my son was eating half his pizza he pulled hair off of his pizza in the cheese (lovely). We didn't even mention it to the waiter, you could tell he was over our table. He was being cheerful with every table around us but was very cold to us. The pizza was pretty good and the basic salad was actually very good. We enjoyed the food for the most part. After we ate, we asked for the bill to which our waiter than apologized for forgetting the salad and the glass issues. This really should have been done with the issues arose in my opinion. I would not visit this restaurant again. While the food was good, minus the hair, the service is just not where it needed to be.

Stopped by Basic Bar & Pizza after a Padres game and had some of the best pizza I've ever had!!! I was with a group of 10 and 4 pizza was more than enough to fill us all up. The group ordered classic pepperoni and So Meaty, a house special. Both pizzas were delicious but my personal favorite was the So Meaty. The combination of meat and a creamy ricotta cheese is a perfect combo for any pizza lover. On top of great pizza, we ate outside in a sectioned off area right in front of the restaurant. Great pizza and the view on a busy night in the Gaslamp District was perfect. The staff was also on top of their game. They were helpful with recommendations and did a great job serving a group of 10. If you're craving late night pizza or pizza in general check out Basic Bar & Pizza...5 Stars!!!

Went here during comic con weekend... it was packed!! But I already had that mindset it was going to be busy, HOWEVER, service was still great! They were quick and all friendly. The pizza was so fresh and delicious! Super huge, it was group of 3 and we still had 4 more slices to go!!! Highly recommend this place for some yummy pizzas! You'll be amazed at how much you can eat.

Came here after a wedding rehearsal. There is inside and outside seating. We were seated in a reserved section for our party which gave us a more intimate feel. I ordered the mojito from the menu and it was really good! I heard the mai tai was good as well. We ordered the pizza and it wad delicious. The staff were really nice and they brought our orders out really quickly.

Excellent thin crust pizza. It's so thin that a large will feed only 2-3 hungry adults, while the small will feed 1-2 hungry adults. Just pepperoni is awesome. But the "So Meaty" combo with Ricotta is also great!

This is some of the best Pizza my family and I have ever tried. We recommend it to all our friends and they completely agree. Thin crust, just the right amount of everything, melts in your mouth and affordable. LOVE!

(Last visited 5/12/2022.) Hanging out in San Diego for the weekend with my boys and it's time for dinner after a long day of partying in this beautiful city! We were just walking around downtown and saw that this place had been rented out for a private event. That MUST mean it's good, right?! So we popped in the next day to see what all the hype is about... Atmosphere/Appearance: It's basically a giant, rustic, chill sports bar and I loved it. The ceilings were high and this is gonna sound funny, but it felt like we were IN a giant pizza oven. Lol. It wasn't hot or anything, but the walls are lined in brick, the risers are rounded creating arches above our heads and the place was so wide open! There was wood everywhere, good, loud, energetic music, picnic tables that made you share and of course other dining sections in case you wanted somewhere quieter. Service: I can't remember who took care of us, but I know we had a good time and didn't need anything. Food: The pizzas we ordered were absolutely enormous. Probably like wheels on a car/truck you'd see in Atlanta. Lol. We ordered a straight cheese and I think a meaty version. The crust was thin and crispy. The cheese was lighter than I would've liked, but that's fine since the crust was so thin. The toppings were delicious and yo... I can see why this place has won so many awards and why so many people have been here! Value: I can't remember. A: You're in California. Lol. B: It's San Diego. C: It's DOWNTOWN San Diego. Nothing is going to be cheap, but pizza usually doesn't do you wrong. Lol. Splitting the 2 giant pizzas between the 4 of us didn't break our pockets at all. In conclusion, I loved this place and I know we'll be back here the next time we revisit San Diego!

The pizza at Basic is anything but basic! Five of us strolled in on a Saturday and grabbed seats at one of the long tables. It was order at the bar, then grab your seat type of affair. Not sure if that is the norm or if there is table service at other times. We all got our drinks and we ordered a large pepperoni pizza. It didn't take long for a great looking pie to arrive at our table. Not all pepperoni pizzas are equal and this one was on another level. Great sauce, with Mozzarella and delicious high quality pepperoni. It easily fed the five of us and at under 30 bucks it was a bargain. Happy hour everyday from 3-6. My beers were $6. This was the third (I think?) time that Becky and I have been this OG downtown Basic. We've always loved it. Closer to home (Santee) we have been a few times to sister restaurant Urbn in El Cajon. Excellent food at both! The Mashed Pizza is a must try. White pie w/ mozz - mashed potato - bacon I know what you're thinking. Forget that and eat it!

Probably some of the best pizza I've had in San Diego since I went to Italy & not crazy overpriced . Bartenders are super nice & chill Chill ambiance to go at any time .

We had a team lunch here today after a team scavenger hunt. Good seating for about 25 of us; the Caesar and Gorgonzola pear salads were great, different varieties pizza was especially good, though cut in strange shapes. We enjoyed our drinks; I had a Mai tai that was quite good. Staff was friendly.

Great location/hours/staff/ambiance. I ordered a well done cheese pie. The flavor was incredible but the pizza was very floppy and had no crunch.

Good for groups and 2-6 this place delivers good pizza, strong drinks, and plenty of good times. The service was prompt and well mannered. The pizza comes in two sizes and the larger pie was enough for three guys. The music was uptempo and contemporary with an easy going vibe all around. If you're looking for pizza ahead of your next Padres game this is definitely a good option.

The location is a good option for a meal near petco park. I stopped by here for some pizza with a friend for lunch recently. It was my first time here and I had a bbq chicken pizza. I ordered the smaller size surprised by the high price but once the food came I saw why. They brought a sheet pan sized pizza as the small! The pizza itself had a good taste not super greasy and good balance of flavors including sauce amount. At lunch time there was only bar service but the bartender was welcoming and helpful.

When attending a Padres game we are always looking for somewhere to stop before hand so we only need to either buy food or drinks inside since prices have gone up. Our friends recommend Basic Bar & Pizza and we are so glad that they did. This is such a great pizza spot. The food is very good, it is really thin and easily shared with your partner. The drinks are very tasting and the service is phenomenal. The restaurant is located right across the street from PetCo Park and its perfect walking distance to get to either Centerfield or right field Gate. cant wait to come back.

Ordered pizza to go so we could watch the Padres game. Ordered two Gluten Free pizzas. The toppings were great but the crust was tough and hard to chew. The Red sauce with two cheeses helped the one pizza become a little softer and easier to chew. The people were nice and the timing was good and I'm sure their normal pizza must be great since they had a large crowd. So 5 stars for the toppings and 1 star for the crust.

Yeah, that was an expensive mistake. We ordered a pitcher of Moscow mule, but it was made with soda water instead of ginger beer. And no simple syrup. Asked about it and was told that's just how they make it. The bartender was literally indignant that I expected simple syrup and lime??? I added 7-up to sweeten it just so it was drinkable. The pizza was okay. And maybe on a busier night there might have been a vibe, but being almost empty, this place was somehow creepy and depressing.

Great spot for happy hour!! Came here during Comic-Con and surprisingly and thankfully no wait. Can't exactly remember what their happy hour desk was, but it was on drinks and too good to pass up. 4 of us split the large mashed potato pie. I'm not normally a fan of tomato sauce less pizza but was too intrigued not to order. It was pretty good! Definitely big enough for 4 hungry people and had good flavor. The cheese and bacon were yummy but the mashed potato did not do it for me. The mounds of it were pretty flavorless and not too big of a fan of the texture. I would like to come back and try other pizzas!!

So much room for improvement, which is a shame bc the pizza is damn good. The takeout experience was a hot mess on a game day. There should be a notification in the app or somewhere before you order saying it's a game day and parking will be difficult (impossible). Instead, I drove downtown to pick up my order and couldn't find anywhere within miles. When I called and asked if they could walk my (pre paid) order to the street (no more than 3 yards) they refused. Then I asked them to hold it at the front for me, which they said they would, but when I ran in (from being double parked) it wasn't there and I still had to go to the back bar to get it. Which all would've been fine if the food were on point/worth it. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. Cesar salad: croutons were way overcooked, almost cracked a tooth; they gave us one *tiny* dressing with a huge salad, I paid 50 cents to add a second one, and even both of those barely covered half the salad. You'd think they could afford to be more generous with what was clearly store-bought salad dressing; unsurprisingly the Parmesan was similarly skimped on and not very fresh for an Italian place. The small would have been enough for a starter for 2-3 people, had there been enough dressing. Pizza: delicious as always. Crust was a little crunchier than usual, but still some of the best pizza (of any kind) in SD. Even my New York parents were impressed. Never sleep on the fried eggplant!

A super busy pie/bar resto in east village with an industrial feel. Food was great and atmosphere was great! 4magio pizza - 4 cheese pizza on a pesto base with basil. thin crispy crust and savoruy creamy cheeses brught together an amazing pizza. It was very oil and heavy but was amazing... House salad - the candied walnuts, sweet vinegrette and mixed greens really came together to make an amazing dish. Would definelty recommend to anyone willing to have a salad.

Tried this pizza place before a padres game. I loved how thin the crust is all around and how fresh the ingredients are. The sauce was fantastic and the meatballs were very flavorful. My only complaint is how the pizza was cut. Near the middle it was kind of in strips instead of squares, which made it messy. Our pizza was accidentally given to a party in the bar, but the fantastic waitress gave us a free round of beers and another pizza came out quickly after that. The building that Basic is in is a really cool old brick building. I'd definitely come here again before a game.

Basic is still serving up their thin-crust New Haven style brick oven pizza just like they have since 2006 in the East Village in downtown San Diego. The menu remains simple. One choice of salad (candied walnuts, crumbled gorgonzola and sliced pears on a bed of mixed greens tossed in a light vinaigrette,) and a plethora of pizza options on that iconic crust. Mashed remains a unique offering (white pie with mashed potato & bacon with mozzarella,) but I usually prefer to stick with just a red pie with mozzarella... or potentially extra mozzarella. The crust is very thin, so I can take down a full small pie by myself (even though I should not,) and sometimes I get a large just to bring home some leftovers. I am originally from NY, so while New Haven style is nothing like NY style (and it is not meant to be) I definitely appreciate the "flop" on this style. We have gone with friends who are from that area in CT, and they rate it solidly for that style as well. The bar is still a huge draw as well as they have cocktails as well as beer and wine. Plus they still have Happy Hour from 3-6 every day!

In our latest trip, we sat ourselves and had to order at the bar for our food. We decided on two large pies: one specialty (bacon and macaroni) and fourmaggio cheese. Both actually happened to be white pizzas. I think collectively our group though the bacon and macaroni was better but both tasted good. I think both were a tad bit light on sauce but still tasty. Lemonade was fine, no complaints. They seemed a bit understaffed though when we went.

This is my go to spot when in SD especially before a game. The potato pizza is an original and good. Not what you think. Not too much but just enough for a unique experience.

Thank you Zach Bryan! Basic Pizza: 5/5! The fam was in town for a country concert last night, so I promised to do some picking up and dropping off. After the show, our party was to meet up for some food and drinks. Since Basic is right near Petco, it was a no-brainer. Now I've to been to Basic a number of times, but Friday Night, 11/11/22, was somethin' different. The "So Meaty" pizza was soooooooo fire! I mean it was loaded with toppings and every single ingredient was the freshest and most delicious it could possibly be. The pizza came out piping hot and the crust was absolutely divine. You know sometimes the crust can be a little too soft or a little burnt, but this one was "C'est Magnifique". If you know me then you know I struggled my damndest not to go back for a repeat on Saturday. I mean, this pizza was perfection. My Uncle could not get enough. He'd already eaten dinner but he kept remarking how he was full, but he still wanted to keep eating. When we arrived around 10:15pm, it wasn't crowded, but by 11 it was packed. A large pie and a Harland Hazy was $74 but they were damn good. I'd definitely get that pie again. Parking in this area sucks...FYI... Thanks Basic!!!! I'll be back soon!

I've been here a few times but on this particular occasion it was to grab some food/drinks before a Padres game. This is the perfect location since it's right by the stadium, ample seating both outside and inside. We managed to get a table outside even though it was quite busy, and I found out they have happy hour every day from 3-6pm (amazing!). Initial service was a little longer than usual but it was busy, and the rest of our experience with the service was quick. Drinks and food came out within minutes. I ordered the $8 Tito's vodka with ginger beer and slice of lime to basically make a mule. There is also a good variety of drinks on happy hour. As for food, I had to order my favorite mashed potato classic pie. Hands down one of my favorite pizzas with the thin crust and flavorful mashed potatoes, cheese & bacon. I must admit it sounded weird to me at first, but after the first bite, was hooked. Outside of a great place to pre-game before a Padres game, it is also great for other occasions. They have a pool table and is a hot spot at night.

Pizza is so delicious here. The layout of the place is an open concept, a nice chill place to host large groups. Staff makes it easy to split checks, so little to no drama! BF loves ordering from here- in house, pick-up or delivery.. they never disappoint.

This place is my favorite place ever! The pizza is the most authentic in SD it's such a great happy place. Lauren is such a great waiter and host. All the staff is incredible and so welcoming I love this place.

Stopped by after a Padres game. I loved the pizza, we were surprised how big the small pizza was! It fed 3 of us. I loved the thin crust, flavorful and delicious.

Perfect outside area to pregame watch and enjoy a pizza. The server helped pick out a small pizza which was huge- and some beers. The crust is thin and crispy and everything was great

Arrived at 4 pm to beat the pregame Padres game crowd. Restaurant was relatively empty but we still anticipated a 45 min. wait for pizza. No wait to be seated and immediately ordered our drinks and pizza. Drinks came out faster than usual, waited 45 min for pizza and finally decided to ask the server on the status. She gave some crappy excuse about how a pizza burned, she named the pizza that burned, which wasn't what we ordered and we corrected her by mentioning we ordered "East village". It was obvious she forgot to place our order. She mentioned the kitchen is "redoing" our order. Waited an additional 30 min, with no update. Finally we decided to close out with her, she seemed surprised that we didn't get our pizza, once again. She went back into the kitchen, came back out and with no explanation said it'll be "$35 for your drinks". I was expecting an apology and an explanation. Got none of that and only irritated us more. This review is not because of the mistake, it happens, more so it's for the lack of courtesy to even apologize. This is a usual spot for us as season ticket holders, we may have to find a new "go-to" spot.
