Google
Beautiful book store inside the renovated Studio City Theater which had opened to the public back in 1938. Now it is home for Barns & Noble and it is a great place to find all types of books for all ages, sience, art, history, thrillers, teens-Anime, children, various small gifts and even Legos. Very quiet and comfortable, if you need help the representatives at the front desk will help you. Street parking.

I recently visited Barnes & Noble to buy an LSAT 🎊 prep book, and I must say, my experience 😝 was truly remarkable! The store had a fantastic 💋 selection of study materials, making it easy 🙂 to find exactly what I needed. 😇

Google
The most relaxing place in the city. Beautifully decorated and laid out. Better than other BN stores. But watch their prices. They charge retail for the books and double the price on pens and highlighters, etc. They are growing stores, and it's not by discounting merchandise.

Google
My favorite Barnes and Noble in the LA area. Love that there’s a lot of parking in the back. Pleaseeee don’t change anything! The interior and exterior is so charming. The staff is always helpful and kind too.

Jon Ellis

Google
Always a good place to hang out, check their new LA themed book selection right inside the entrance!

Google
Always ready to help you staff. Cozy atmosphere. And not too much people inside the store. But I don't know about weekend, always visit this place on weekdays

Paulette Salg

Google
While it's one of the smaller Barnes and Noble it's well stocked. There is also ample parking.

While I was visiting Los Angeles recently I decided to check out the Barnes and Noble that was in the neighborhood of where I was staying. Loved the layout and the selection. Bought some books and was able to see their toy selection that I've heard so much about. Looking forward to returning.

Yelp
I can get lost in a bookstore, roaming aisle after aisle of books reaching into forever. There aren't many bookstores left, and I treasure Bookstar. I remember when I was a child, my mom would drop me off at B. Dalton, and I'd sit on the floor for an hour, reading while she shopped. You can't really leave your kids alone at a bookstore like that anymore. But the feeling remains the same...time stretches out when you browse a good bookstore, and if you pick up enough books and flip through and read a few pages, you can blip in and out of a few different worlds in just half an hour.

Yelp
I used to work in the children's department at a Barnes and Noble in Illinois. I love Barnes and Noble and the idea that a brick and mortar bookstore still exists. This one is kept well and the staff are friendly, despite being very busy. It's usually pretty easy to find a book and the value tables are right by the front door. I would love to see more signings happening at this location. Parking is easy, as it is in an outdoor mall the the lot is right in front of the store. Convenient and friendly.

Mat P.

Yelp
I love this location. I enjoy talking to the staff, as they are not only helpful, but are readers who love to share their recommendations. Also, the inventory is really good, and I love the location, it's inside one of the old school movie theaters. Prices are what you'd expect. I try to come here weekly, just because they're always getting new and interesting things in stock.

Patti W.

Yelp
What a great store. The history of the building made it even more inviting. We were welcomed as we entered the store. I was asked if I needed help twice by two employees. That was great because I was in a new store and I did not know where anything was. The selections were great. I found exactly what I was looking for. They have a bargain area that I also found some wonderful items to buy. I went in thinking I was going to buy one book and I ended up buying over $100 worth of items. I will definitely go back and shop in the store again.

Netia B.

Yelp
The clerk was extremely helpful in helping me locate exactly what i was looking for (without the use of the computer might I add). We conversed about my purchase and current reads which helped the overall personability of the experience. It's located in an old movie theater which is super quirky, but I had to knock it off a star b/c there's no air conditioning it seems so the tiny location was extremely hot.

Yelp
Jaime one of the workers was really helpful and patient! I had initially made an order like 30 minutes before, but I guess the system was down and the lady said that they weren't able to order my books that I originally picked but after going to look for other ones, Jaime helped me and he just said that the system was glitching that I was able to order the book that I initially wanted :)

Jared F.

Yelp
I wish I had more pictures, I'm sure I will add some more in the future, but this place is very unique for a B&N. It almost has a 80's vibe with the neon but it works. The workers here are very nice, and just like every B&N the selection is quite big. Since it is a chain store, you are able to see all of the deals they have online before hand which is nice, but I would just recommend coming here to look at the store!

Alexis M.

Yelp
This is the most unique barnes and noble I've ever been to. It is really cute and fun to walk around in. It's also not as big as a normal barnes and noble but for me that is perfect, it had all the selections I'm interested in. I will say the books were a little pricy but there are discounted areas to find cheaper books. The workers were really friendly and continuously asked if I needed help.

Sam S.

Yelp
We need to make sure we never close bookstores - ever. Stopped in for a break from the rain and was so glad I did. There's nothing like the feeling of wandering through the aisles and wondering what your next literary adventure is going to be. The store is located in a building that used to be The Fox Studio City Theater. They kept the marquee and the ticket booth still stands out front. The whole time I was there, the staff were attentive and friendly, and would promptly answer questions or show the way to the appropriate section a customer was looking for. The choices are vast, and I loved the handwritten recaps under certain featured books in the aisles that weren't on the main end caps. Like anything, books are a little pricey these days, but no Kindle or e-reading device will ever replace the feel of a real book in your hands.

D. B.

Yelp
I love the staff here! They are so helpful and kind. I would buy books here over Amazon ANY day. They take the time to curate for you and find exactly what you need. That kind of service is priceless and stating to be non-existent in our world. I'm looking forward to bringing my unborn son here one day.

Nooneh K.

Yelp
Thanks for the excellent service. I hope to one day see my books on your shelves. You're the reason I refer kids to bookstores in search of their favorite author voices so they can fall in love with reading. You're the reason why I wrote six books, two of which are published. Thank you for being a pillar in the community! I've taken up calligraphy because of you!!! BIG THANKS ALWAYS! You have the best staff and value for our time. ‼

Reazor K.

Yelp
Robin was very helpful in finding the styles of books I enjoy reading. Such a large selection of all different book reads. Clean, organized and cool. I like a tangible book to read. Enjoyed being a customer here!

Yelp
My local B & N!! Not as many left, but the ones that are definitely do their best and Barnes & Nobles of Ventura Blvd in Studio City, Los Angeles, California definitely is up there. It's not you typical setup or layout being built inside an old vintage renovated movie theatre Bookstar, formerly known as the Fox Studio City Theatre in the late 1930s, turned super bookstore... Expect Neon retro print lettering as well as an abundance of lighting under most sections, pillars, etc... Plus beautiful yet simple murals and patterned art on the walls. There's plenty to explore including some small rooms with genres and miscellaneous items to catch your eye near the front and rows upon rows of literature, history, publications and "How to" bliss.... Pop over to the "Newsstand area" or "Arts" - two of my favs, aside from fiction... Maybe even come across a small book signing as they have done some here and still do I believe. The children's book section is pretty big and they have a lot of bilingual, multilingual and language books in stock. It's definitely one of the smaller Barnes you'll come across and only one level. I'd imagine the crawl space is used for storage and employees only, but they definitely make good use of all areas that are accessible to their customers and provide some incredible service. I tend not to go to wild since the Nobles is one of the more marked up bookstores when it comes to certain items. Enjoy shared parking in back or make the journey to some hopefully open metered street spot - free parking on Sundays!

Andre B.

Yelp
I have gone to this place since high school it was originally a movie theatre and they kept a lot of the indications it was. Great selection of books and it's fun to just wander around.

Marcus C.

Yelp
This Barnes & Noble has always caught my eye whenever I'm around Laurel Canyon Blvd. & Ventura Blvd. For so many years I thought it was a theatre, which it turns out actually was before it became a bookstore. Don't bother duking it out for parking on Ventura since there's a big parking lot behind the store. This Barnes & Noble is on the smaller side so the aisles can get a little tight, but the other customers are polite and respectful (as are the employees). There's a good selection of books and gifts, so chances are you'll find something that'll catch your eye. They also have clearance/sales sections if you don't want to pay too much. Support bookstores and come visit Barnes & Noble - just maybe don't come at night as it gets sketchy!

Michael P.

Yelp
This store is gorgeous! Take your time to appreciate the incredible interior and get a new book. Incredibly helpful staff as well.

Tami B.

Yelp
We love coming here! Lots of selection and they're very accommodating. If they don't have a book you want, they'll order it for you. Employees have been very helpful and nice. I personally love their large range of writing journals. The kid section is really great.

Mike R.

Yelp
Few book stores around. Very limited travel stuff and a lot was dated but there is no competition

Nancy S.

Yelp
Can't go wrong with the standard Barnes + Noble, and this location is particular since it used to be a theatre. Can definitely see the history in the architecture and the ticket booth up front, outside the store. Unfortunately the inside is dirtier than I expected, but perhaps it was the one day I went that was bad. I revisited recently and the smell of dog poop was so pervasive I immediately masked up. Inside was also quite warm, so it felt insufferably stuffy to the point that I left. Feeling bad for the employees that need to work an entire shift in this environment.

Monica N.

Yelp
An old cute theatre repurposed into a B&N. Smaller stock than The Grove. But subsequently less overwhelming + theatre theme = better esp for my introverted lil self, imo. Free street parking on Sundays. I'll be back.

Claudia V.

Yelp
Such a cute small bookstore on Ventura Blvd. I was driving to Los Angeles and was asked to get a bible for a family member. I called the store to make sure they carried them. The person who answered the phone was nice and helpful. Nowadays the lack of customer service is real. Upon arriving I found parking in the back. I was worried since Ventura Blvd. is a busy street. The store is cute. Felt kind of retro when you walk up to it. Honestly, it didn't feel like a big corporate company.

Greg K.

Yelp
Just to update, I did go back to the B&N a day or so later and spoke to a manager. The manager was apologetic and said she would speak to the employee who harassed me. I'll still go there, but I'm nervous about going in whenever I see that worker there because I often have a backpack with me and don't want to be harassed again.

Cynthia B.

Yelp
Excellent, knowledgeable staff. Large selection. I'm a fiction lover, my daughter loves manga. We're both in heaven. In a breed quickly becoming extinct, Book star gives me hope. Let's frequent them often. Last book store in the Valley...(not counting Calabasas.)

Libra H.

Yelp
I love bookstores and I haven't stepped in a Barnes & Noble in ages. We stopped by during a weekend afternoon and I picked up a nice book on the way out. Sandra, who rung me up was not the friendliest and responded very crassly when I changed my mind on the bag I purchased. Jeeze Louise, people like this make me never want to come back when you have places like Amazon. I remember Barnes & Nobles used to have really nice employees but I guess she was having a bad day. The book selection was decent and location had a charm to it, parking was great and I'm stoked to read this new title!

Leslie S.

Yelp
Such a cute B&N! It's an old converted theater so props to them for turning it into something different! That being said, it is a smaller B&N then we are used to but it has pretty much everything you need, even a small kid's section! There is no little stage like other locations have but they did used to have morning book readings for the kiddos! It was super cute, they brought in little chairs for the kids, I do hope they bring that back one day! This most recent visit was great. We picked out some new books for our girls and I admired the signed copies of the celebrity books. I almost bought the one with Drew Barrymore's signature! I appreciate how this B&N, while small, still has non-book items like toys, games, and puzzles for kids. There is an entire shelf devoted to arts and crafts box set so good for them! We will be back at this location soon. Even sooner if they bring back live book readings or signings!

Er3yn G.

Yelp
Probably the coolest Barnes and Noble I've been too. It's a renovated vintage theater. Still has the decor, neon signs, and intricate carvings. The store front even still has the ticket booth! I'm not big on chain stores, usually go into the independent ones. So while I didn't buy anything, it was still fun to walk around in. The shelves are jam pack. The employees are friendly. For a Friday afternoon it was pretty empty though. Anyways definitely, worth a pass through if you're in the neighborhood!

Stephen O.

Yelp
Impressive merchandise on hand. I hadn't been in a Barnes and Nobles for years and I definitely like the changes.

Lorie A.

Yelp
my fav b&n location. the staff is always so helpful, however it tends to get busy on weekends so keep that in mind.

Sophie ..

Yelp
Great bookstore. Big book selection, really helpful staff, space is clean and well lit, and ample parking behind.

John E.

Yelp
This is a great bookstore for a couple reasons. First off when you walk in, it's like you are transported back in time. All the neon and signage from back when this was a theater is amazing. I would go in here just to look around at the decor and wonder what it was like back in the day. As you walk on the decorative floor at the entrance and pass the ticket booth outside on the street you feel like you are going to a show. Even the store front has a old style marquee with letters they place on it. Inside is just as beautiful. Ornate ceiling, projection window and even a screen curtain. The book selection is very good as well. It may not be as big as the other B&Ns around but they have a few copies of everything. I had no problem finding mine. There isn't as many reading areas as other book stores too but remember you are in a former theater. Staff is helpful and relaxed. There to help but they don't hover over you. You check out near the concessions and your blast from the past book experience if done. Parking in the back is ok but fills up from other businesses. Street parking is metered so read the signs. It's located in a trendy shopping strip of Ventura Blvd. Fun time and got my book!

Taylor D.

Yelp
Our go-to Barnes & Noble! It's located in an old theater and has that unique charm to it. I've purchased probably a dozen+ books from here in the last few months and we enjoy browsing for a new read.

Jessica L.

Yelp
The SF Valley. Plenty of coffee shops. Plenty of yoga studios. Plenty of sushi restaurants. Plus a growing number of weed dispensaries! But you know what we are seriously lacking? Religious stores! I mean come on, I can't be the only one who's friends are popping out babies like wildfire and thus, always getting invited to some little one's baptism or first communion. There's never a place where I can find an appropriate gift for these occasions. And here's where this Barnes & Noble location comes in. Right on Ventura with lots of free parking in the back. While limited, they do have a selection of baby/children bibles and story books. They have books for other faiths as well - Jewish, Christian, and I think I've seen Muslim. No rosaries or games or other items, but it serves purpose. This is usually the only time I'm in this book store and because of the lack of other religious store options, I appreciate them for remaining open.

Sam R.

Yelp
I'd give this place 5 stars if I could!! Great selection of books and incredible customer service. Sandra is the sweetest human being ever with a wealth of book recommendations. Highly highly recommend

Trina T.

Yelp
Always helpful. Book sellers are patient and go out if their way to get the book you want or need. I prefer to drive here instead of Barnes and Noble in Cakabasas.

kimberly d.

Yelp
Mostly everyone is friendly with some wonderful book recommendations that I would have never explored otherwise . Minus one star- Ten years I was studying for the NCLEX RN exam and went there to purchase a couple of books to study. While I was browsing I was reviewing on my phone the Amazon ratings of each book there in order to decide which one to purchase. A 60 to 70 year old worker there accosted me and started accusing me of taking pictures of the pages in the book "so I wouldn't have to purchase the book.". I showed her in a nanosecond that my phone was on the Amazon page of one the NCLEX books that was there as proof. She looked at the picture (which proved she was wrong) and continued to scold me. I always think about that incident when I walk through their doors. So, hopefully this review will get rid of my negative BookStar mojo vibes.

Delia R.

Yelp
I went around 2:30pm and there was no line to enter. When I exited, there was about 12 people waiting in line. We were free to roam around but were advised we should try to limit our browsing to 15 minutes in the store. You can't find a book in 15 minutes so I felt rushed. However, the staff was great and helped me find what I needed but didn't have time to look for more.

Michiko M.

Yelp
This barnes and noble looks like a cute retro movie theater outside! I think I always thought it was till I stepped inside. I went last minute Christmas shopping and the lady at the cashier was super nice and helpful. They even have free Christmas wrapping paper outside if you need it. They have a nice parking lot in the back that is connected to other stores.

Sarah A.

Yelp
This location is clean and has a nice selection, but the staff is a little off-putting. Everyone standing around and I walked up to the group to ask a question and three of them eyed eachother on who was going to help. Greeeat.

Shilpa D.

Yelp
My first review of a bookstore! I was intrigued to check this place out because I read other reviews explain how it is set up in an old movie theater. Any bookstore lover would appreciate this layout. The store is pretty small for a B&N but a great place to go to look for a gift, etc. If you are looking for a specific book, you are probably better of checking availability over the phone or online for this location. The staff is friendly and nice and if you are in the area, I highly recommend popping in and checking it out! *my one complaint is with the bathroom - it was pretty gross. So maybe go before you come ;)

John A.

Yelp
This Barnes and Noble is great! The staff there is super friendly, and they have a great selection. I was there the only her day with a list of things I wanted, but as I was glancing at the horror section, an employee who set up the horror display stopped and gave me all of his recommendations and his enthusiasm was infectious. He asked me about my preferences, and then used that to generate three different recommendations that he was passionate about. I thanked him, and a few minutes later he came back and had another recommendation based on what I had said I liked. His pitch was so good that after we were done talking, another employee walked up and asked about that that book on the strength of the sales pitch he had overheard the employee giving to me. We both walked out of the store having purchased copies of the book! Xander at the studio city Barnes and Noble knows how to sell a book! Looking forward to coming back to this Barnes and noble for the cool vibe and friendly staff, even though there are B&N's that are closer to where I live.

Jennifer C.

Yelp
I went to pick up a book for a friend on new baby, and ended up leaving with more books at not only a great price but a huge smile on my face because of how helpful the employees were! From holding books for me to suggesting good books, the experience was phenomenal. I was especially impressed by Sandra who helped me check out by explaining all the benefits of membership and suggested a great book!

Lucy A.

Yelp
I love the look of this Barnes and noble my go to place! They always have a great selection of books

Jim H.

Yelp
I've been haunting and hanging out in bookstores for decades, and this is one of the best stores I've ever been in. The staff are super helpful, friendly, and really knowledgeable. I've had wonderful chats with other customers, which is certainly in part due to the atmosphere created here where it feels like it's just local store. And if you ever need a recommendation there are always staff with great suggestions.

Kathy A.

Yelp
I love this book store and I've been coming here for years as a loyal customer. I'm usually happy with the customer service but unfortunately the employee at the register this morning was grumpy and rude. Next time I will order from Amazon.

Jo S.

Yelp
This is a "go to" bookstore for us. It's nice to pop in while walking around in the area. There's parking behind the store, sometimes it's not bad to find a spot, sometimes it can be a bit crazy. The usual around Ventura Blvd. There's a nice selection of books, magazines, nice kids section. They do have areas for cool gift ideas. I can't say I'm a fan of their security people. Customer service is usual decent, one or twice we had some issue, but haven't seen those people working in there. I love their Old Movie Theater marquis. It's a great option for buying books and a nice place to check out while you stroll on Ventura Blvd.

Sait I.

Yelp
This is absolutely my favorite Barnes and Noble. Before this one, I honestly never been to a Barnes and Noble that's friendly. In all the other Barnes and Nobles in LA, it's so hard to find a store assistant to help. Here, they noticed we were looking and offered help themselves. We went here to look for a book for my wife and the store assistant was super friendly. After my wife got the book, the store assistant recommended us some similar mystery/crime books. Everyone from the store assistants to cashiers here are super friendly and helpful. I will definitely go to this Barnes and Noble from now on.

Ian S.

Yelp
It gets four star just four being a bookstore! A brick-and-mortar building (and kind of a cool building, at that) where you while away an hour just checking out books. Enjoy them while they are here, kids! I may actually start going back to bookstores instead of ordering on amazon, especially when you factor in the reason for this review's fifth star... what else? It's always about the people! First was Chris... he was mellow, manning the register, welcoming in people with a cool, welcoming vibe. Then there is Trey... Trey is a whole 'nother story. He wants to joke a little (in a slightly serious book-store way), he wants to HELP you find what you need... he treats this store like he owns it (in a good way) and treats you like a respected customer... but always with a easy-going vibe. I had just left the B&N in the Commons... VERY nice people there , too... but totally different vibe. They are like in the Kardashian zone and the Book Star B&N in studio city feels like it could be more Hollywood area. It's much more cramped in the studio city one... but that feels more "right" for a bookstore... and they... got Trey. OK, OK... I'm saying that partially because he made my time in there a little more fun but also cuz he knows his shit. He doesn't have to "go ask someone in that department"... he knew the answer... and the questions,

Ryan F.

Yelp
Too many of the books (in particular the political science books) are not credible. There are too many books that have subjective, unwarranted opinions as opposed to actual academic books with hard-earned evidence. I feel like Barnes and Noble is trying to make books that are for 1. students trying to pass a standardized exam, 2. teaching children, or 3. adults interested in passively reading random things on a toilet. As a bookstore, Barnes and Noble should promote a greater emphasis on academia. Instead, it is promoting disinformation.

Tess M.

Yelp
A time killing exploration walk 'n shop Ventura Boulevard pleasantly culminated at this Bookstar/Barnes & Noble store with a façade reminiscent of a neighborhood movie theatre plus a pop up Girl Scout Cookie kiosk out front; both drew me in. I generally shop books online E or hardcopy but after a damaged defective tome, a gift, that had to be returned with no time to replace I've taken a more hands on approach, inspecting binding and every page in between. In need of an artsy or classy coffee table book, with no price restrictions for a soon to be retiring friend, I seized the opportunity to browse for her interests: gardening in containers and cats. Several titles I brought up on my phone, according to a gracious sales associate were not available in store but could be ordered from another store, shipped within days. Not wanting to buy sight unseen, I thanked her and continued to browse perhaps a cookbook to compliment my friend's vegan/vegetarian palate especially with more time to create from her garden? Voilà! Tal Ronnen's "Crossroads Kitchen" cookbook, one I own and love! That plus an invitation to join hubby and me for dinner at the establishment of the same name, gift solved! Cashier queried as he issued a gift receipt, "Are you vegan?" "No, just an omnivore who appreciates 'quiet' food like Clint Eastwood referred to a veggie stew in 'The Bridges of Madison County'." (I only watched for the recipes, really.) Purchase complete, exercising the utmost restraint, with visions of Thin Mints dancing in my head, I made a donation to those cool entrepreneurial Girl Scouts out front leaving said cookies of preference behind... Three days later my friend absolutely loved the gift I delivered! Free parking behind store. Metered parking on Ventura Boulevard.
