Slip in through the darkened doorway in Palings Lane, and you're in a little slice of tapa bar in southern Spain.
settle at the timber bar surrounded by couples and talkative types enjoying la buena atmosfera inside.
We picked a bowl of tart, fleshy olives before settling on a bottle of Artomana 'Xarmant Txakoli' from Basque country, a fresh and full flavoured white.
Small fried artichokes with a wonderful saffron colour aioli, followed by pan catalan (bread crisped and covered with a rich tomato sfrito).
The boquerones (sardines in a slight vinegar) are little gifts bursting with salty fish flavour, and a dish of fried mushrooms with an eggyolk centred is a mushy delight.
You could nestle here, but best to keep your tapa fresh and lively. great service, too. we were also fascinated by the barbecue grill, a small charcoal fired hibachi, which fired up the fresh prawns and some meat dishes.
when sliding down Palings lane try not to miss the entrance, it's a lovely reminder of the small bars in Barcelona.
this one is worth three visits.
