You'd think I'd have learned to research spa treatments and rituals before visiting particular spas from my experience at Indian Springs in Calistoga, but I guess I didn't, because I booked this place from just seeing that it was the top rated hamam in Istanbul.
Husband and I went as first time hamam-ers. First off, it was amazing! ... However, I do wish I did some research on the actual process ahead of time to avoid confusion, lol. My fault.
Men and women have separate entrances, but are able to be seen during the same hours (apparently some have men and women only hours due to space, I guess).
Everything felt really safe from the get go.. you put booties on over your shoes before you walk in, you walk up to the reception desk and they scan your HES code or take a pic of your vaxx verification and all that jazz. You meet your fully dressed therapist and they guide you to your personal dressing room. You change into a towel thingy (or if you're a noob like me, your robe, which they then take off your body and swaddle you in the towel you were supposed to put on in the first place, heh) and find your therapist now in a towel wrap and face shield and they guide you to the bath.
Walking through you see glass panels on the floor with signs that tell you that they still use the original methods of heating the hamam by fire underneath the hamam and in the water closets, you see panels under the toilet where some of the original super ancient septic system lay. Do you like ultra white marble? Good, 'cause it's everywhere! So so opulent and beautiful. Anyway, your therapist sits you down in the actual hamam, where if there are other clients, they're buck naked and luckily for me, I got a glimpse of what my future would be since I was dumb and didn't do any research. Your therapist proceeds to wet you with a fancy wash bowl and tells you that you can sit there for a bit and wet yourself and just relax. 5 min later, she returned with some clay and proceeded to cover me, everywhere. Like everywhere. Every nook and cranny. On my face, too. She gave me the rest of the clay and said she'd be back in a bit. The hamam walls are heated and you definitely don't feel cold. Thankfully, she came back back some cold water for me to chug down. She then washed the mud off of me and guided me to the center of the hamam where you lay and get turned into a bubble cloud! It's the most kawaii and fascinating thing ever. You literally get a soapy massage/scrub/bath thingy and they do this trick with a towel and soap to create an insane amount of bubbles and you literally look like a cloud with a head. It's SO AWESOME. Once they're done with that massage/scrub down, they guide you to a shower area where they wash every part of you, even your face and hair. It's quite the experience. After all that, they guide you back to the dressing room and you get into your clothes or robe if you're getting another treatment. I had the most extra package that came with a massage and fruit and gift, so she guided me to a daybed area to lay and have some kind of special juice and turkish delight. Not gonna lie, it was great. After a few min, my therapist came back to fetch me and took me all the way upstairs for my massage. The massage was great, I mean I was already having an amazing time, but yeah, if you have the money to spend on the package I got, which is still really cheap compared to the US, then splurge, but just the bath experience alone is great, too. After the massage, she took me to my changing room and I got back into my clothes and when I emerged, she told me to have a seat and she would serve me fruit and tea. The fruit platter was so so good, they have such good fruit here in Istanbul. Some of the best stone fruit I've ever had... and she presented me with my gift.
100000% recommend. I don't even feel like I need to visit any other hamams, I would totally come back to this place.
Dilek was my therapist, she is amazing and super friendly. Great massage! Teşekkürler Dilek!!!!
