"Barely a hotel at all, Avalon Coastal Retreat is a stunning modernist three-bedroom house on the east coast of Tasmania." - Mark Fedeli
"Barely a hotel at all, Avalon Coastal Retreat is a stunning modernist three-bedroom house on the east coast of Tasmania. The sea views through the house’s glass walls are extraordinary, but the interiors give them a run for their money, thanks to the fine work of local architect Craig Rosevear. A secluded beach lies at the bottom of a walking path, and wetsuits and boogie boards are available if you’re feeling brave." - Mark Fedeli

"Perched alone on a magnificent headland deep in Tasmania’s rugged east coast, Avalon is an essay in the excellence of total seclusion. The ethereally elegant, three bedroom glass house is a one-and-a- half-hour drive from both Hobart and Launceston. Guests are met upon arrival by Alison, the property’s manager, from then on are on their own to enjoy full run of an environment which is, both in intent and execution, a feast for the senses. Inside, the mood is uncluttered and modern: Tasmanian oak Queen-sized beds, witty, well-placed artwork; furniture which is comfortable and chic. Outside the spectacular 180 degree vista across Great Oyster Bay is an ever-changing dance of colors. The only sounds are those of native wildlife (everything from wallabies to kookaburras live in this bushland) and of the waves rolling into the secluded beach below. Every touch is considered, from the gently heated stone floors to the absurdly soft bathrobes and the caressing breeze created by seemingly endless slide-back glass doors. The fridge-freezer comes fully stocked with gourmet treats such as venison chops, smoked quail and artisan ice creams as this is indeed a retreat - no under 12s, no unwelcome visitors, nothing to interrupt the experience. Be warned: while there is much to explore in the national parks nearby, plans may dissolve upon contact with Avalon. The appeal is addictive."
