"Celebrating Oaxaca's Cultural Diversity Held every year during the last two weeks of July, the Guelaguetza festival highlights Oaxaca 's diversity. Representatives of the different ethnic groups of Oaxaca state perform their traditional folk dances and throw items to the crowd that are representative of their region - bread, fruit, baskets... The main presentation takes place in the auditorium on the hill overlooking Oaxaca city, but there are events going on in town and in the surrounding villages as well. You can buy tickets through Ticketmaster Mexico , or get free access to the back section of the auditorium (but line up several hours in advance)."

Lots of stairs to get there and enjoy a nice view of the city. I went late so not able to get good photos. It’s worth it, I’d go again

Great vantage point above Oaxaca to see a city panorama and surrounding areas, but you need to be part mountain goat to walk up and down paved streets and stairs. Bonus: shaded walk through beautiful upscale residential neighbourhoods for photos. Take your time, though. Sunscreen, hat needed when you get to the arena - closed when no events scheduled.

Had a great time!

For Walker's, this is a great destination was views all over the city and an amazing open air auditorium that you can check out while there. Take the shady walking arcade that leaves, from a street West of the cathedral, to see some amazing gardens and very nice Oaxaca houses.

Auditorio Guelaguetza, an architectural masterpiece nestled in the heart of Oaxaca, is a testament to cultural celebration and artistic grandeur. With its sweeping design echoing the vibrant traditions of the region, the auditorium becomes a stage where the spirit of Oaxaca comes alive. Attending events here is not merely a spectatorship; it's an immersive journey into the rich tapestry of Oaxacan culture. The venue's acoustics embrace performances, allowing the echoes of traditional music and dance to resonate with a magical quality. Auditorio Guelaguetza is a cultural haven, a space where the essence of Oaxaca is not just observed but felt, making every visit an unforgettable experience.

I walked up there via a dedicated stairway to a scenic viewpoint. I didn't attend a performance, but the building itself is interesting with a its white fabric dome up on a hill overlooking Oaxaca. Unfortunately there is super loud noise coming out of the sound system, I could hardly hear myself think! It was like that a year ago too, loud droning noise and it was not due to a performance.

The stage being round really helps the view. On the other hand, the lighting and other machines block the view. The sound is never good for the Guelaguetza, in particular, the mic.

A whole mess, not good signaling as to where to go by sections. Very long lines to get in. No taxis available when concert finished. Only good thing was the concert itself.

Yelp
A beautiful spot with good views of the city, but be careful hiking around there alone. Numerous muggings occur in the area, and it is under patrolled by police. A person staying in the B&B I'm in was mugged at knife point by 2 people in id day, taking his watch, call phone and the little cash he was carrying.
