"In western Kyoto , there is a very large forest of bamboo. As you can see in the photo, the shoots grow very tall, making those who stroll by look quite small. I'm sure there are times when this road is crowded, but when we were there, people were few and far between. My only regret was not understanding that this forest would be the only one we saw. I wish I had taken more photos. Bamboo grows extremely fast, which is why it is the fastest renewable plant product that I know. It is not a tree, it is a grass. Some forests have grown to 20 to 30 feet in a growing season of four months. Just Google Arashiyama bamboo forest and you will see more photos and more data about this location and how to get there. The walk through this forest was most peaceful."

I went a sunrise and it was brilliant. Watching the sun peek over the mountains through the bamboo was magical. I ended up walking up and down three the forest as the light changed. There is so much to do in that area! I could definitely spend a few days making my way through all the parks and the winding streets. I bought a beautiful piece of jewelry from a local artist. I walked to an amazing overlook overlooking the river. I wish I had more time.

Visiting the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest was one of the most breathtaking experiences of our trip. The moment you step into the trail, you are surrounded by towering bamboo that seems to stretch endlessly into the sky. The atmosphere feels calm, peaceful, and almost otherworldly, like stepping into a different world. It is truly one of those places that leaves you in awe. The walking trail through the forest was amazing and such a fun experience to share with the family. Every part of the path offers a slightly different view, and the light filtering through the bamboo creates the most beautiful scenery. It felt refreshing, relaxing, and full of quiet beauty. We took our time walking, taking photos, and just enjoying the calmness of the place. It was such a nice break from the busy city and a perfect spot to connect with nature. The kids loved exploring, and we all agreed it was one of the highlights of our time in Kyoto. The Arashiyama Bamboo Forest is truly a must-visit. It is majestic, peaceful, and unforgettable, and it gave us memories we will always treasure as a family.

It’s war amazing the forest was empty no people around but that changed quickly. Go in the morning ! Around 11 ish it was packed like in Disney world peak day main attraction. You could not move anymore due to the amount of people. You can use the train to drive through it and have a beautiful ride across. I would suggest to get an round ticket instead of 1 way. There is the normal trains as well at the next town but not pretty. However you are surrounded by rice fields.

Free, no wait, but a total tourist trap. The bamboo forest was pretty but is only a short walk and wasn't as dense when we went. I heard it used to be much fuller years ago and did not have the fences, but I'm guessing the fences went up due to tourist vandalism of the bamboo. I was definitely underwhelmed how quickly it ended. Upon entering, the path takes you thru some bamboo and a shrine, then you go a bit uphill to the bamboo forest. There were so many people and the path is wide, so you have room to walk. But the downside to all that space is that you don't really feel like you're in a forest. The whole experience was just ok.

Expect to see crowds! As for pretty much every major tourist spot you go to in Kyoto. But this is a must visit when in town. We went at around 8:30 am, still people but not as bad as when we were leaving around 11 am. Very beautiful to see in person! So peaceful but make sure to bring bug/mosquito spray! I got back to the hotel later in the evening to find bites on my body.

This is a great place to visit when you are in Kyoto. It is accessible via many types of public transport like buses or train. The area is so serene and green. If you wish for less crowd, you can always pop by earlier, at the crack of dawn. The walking paths are wide, clean and loops through and around the bamboo forest and beyond. The amenities are good and clean. I had a great time exploring the place. Since this also a neighbourhood suburb, please take care to respect the privacy of the homeowners there.

Walking through the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest feels like stepping into another world. The tall bamboo swaying gently in the wind creates such a calming and almost mystical atmosphere. It’s one of those spots that truly captures the beauty and serenity of Japan. Highly recommended, especially early in the morning before the crowds arrive!

Nice, tranquil. Bit of a hike. Be sure to walk further rup the hill to check local village and temples. Nice cafes and museums in the village that most people miss, as they are only interested in Bamboo. Rickshaw drivers charge only ¥110, which is cheap. They work hard, and always have a smile. No tickets required. Walk through the markets from local train station
