"An anchor of NYC’s bread-baking scene, Amy’s opened in Hell’s Kitchen in 1992 and remains a go-to for artisan breads made with flour that’s good for you (i.e., not bleached and bromated): from white to wheat and rye in baguettes, sourdough boules, Pullman loaves, and more. Today there are seven spots to pick up bread, pastries, cakes, and other treats." - Eater Staff

"Amy's started out in Hell's Kitchen back in 1992 and in the intervening years, her business has gone gangbusters, supplying many of the city's gourmet shops with their wonderful bread and pastries. Head to any of the stores—our favorite is still the largely unchanged original—to pick up a French baguette, olive twist, or one of their delicious pastries to go. As a huge bonus, they offer bread-making classes at their Chelsea Market location where you can learn how to make everything from foccacia to thin-crust pizza."

I visited Amy’s Bread around 9:00 am and loved how peaceful it was with no crowd at that time. I ordered a coffee and their pistachio croissant braid, and both were absolutely delicious! The bakery had a cozy and quiet atmosphere, making it a perfect spot to start the day.

Amy's Bread is within the Chelsea Market (see photos), on 9th Avenue between 15th and 16th Streets. Taxis are easily accessible from there to get you to your next destination. I had the banana cake ($7.08 including tax) which, as a whole, was very good. The flavor of the cake had a pleasing banana taste (as it should), while the white frosting, which was tasty, did not enhance the cake because its pleasing flavor was strong and blocked out the flavor of the cake when the two were together on the fork. The few nuts on top of it had no taste. A few weeks later I tried their butterscotch cashew bar, pictured ($5.00). The butterscotch flavor was strong and pleasing, but there was almost no contrast of flavor with the cashews because most of them had no recognizable flavor, as was with the nuts on the banana cake mentioned above. I tried their Hell's Kitchen bakery (9th Avenue at about 47th Street), on February 28th, 2025, it was very disappointing. Their sticky bun WAS, many years ago, considered to be one of the best. NOW, I think that it is one of the poorest versions. The sticky and tasty flavor was only on the top of the bun, the rest was close to flavorless. Their tuna sandwich on that day was the most unrecognizably flavored tuna sandwich I have ever had (rate it 0).

I first came here in 2022 on a trip and I dreamed of the cranberry orange muffin I ate everyday after since. This time around, happy to be back, I tried an apple crumble muffin and it was divine. My friend had a pistachio twist which was rated a 10/10. This place does not disappoint and is worth the try/hype.

Google
Amy’s Bread was a must try since I’m a huge fan of anything sourdough. Overall, it wasn’t my best costumer serving experience or waiting time for ordering and paying but the product was very tasty and earned a 3 star. The cinnamon raisin bagel was decent and tastes great with cream cheese.

Google
Got the scone and a slice of quiche, it was good but they put the quiche in a panini press and it got totally destroyed. Never seen that before and I brought it back to the front and asked if I could have a new one but the worker made me seem super weird for asking lol. Totally wasn’t expecting the deadpan “that’s how we heat it up” especially considering I get it all the time and had never seen someone toss it in a panini press. Idk it was good but the experience was weird.

Google
Honestly my favorite bakery in the city. Their chocolate cake is unbeatable. Also the bread is awesome. Really, you can’t go wrong here at all.

Google
Have been here twice. It always smells fresh and there a variety of options. Have gotten the olive bread, was decent. Also got the challah twist knot, it was fresh and nice. Would like to try the desserts for sure the next time.

Google
Very cozy place! We ordered to go so unfortunately we didn't get the chance to fully experience the place's vibe. We had a cream cheese and a PB&J bagel, plus a coffee. The bagels were tasty with a nice texture, and the filling quantity was well balanced.

Yelp
Such a nice neighborhood bakery introduced by a friend. Have been coming here with the kids post swim lessons which has been very enjoyable. Straight forward ordering system - there is also a seating area at the back. Service has been nice and friendly. They have kindly heated up my purchases when requested.

Sonali K.

Yelp
A wonderful local neighborhood bakery! I love that they hosted my son's pre-k class to come in to learn about the different breads and pastries and helped them pick out a selection to take back to school with them for their bread unit. I love the inviting blue color out front. It's a very tight space when you enter, which opens up to small cafe seating in the back. The service can be hit-or-miss depending on what day you go in there, but honestly, if I was working daily in a bakery from before sunrise I don't know if I'd always be so chipper either lol I love their variety - there is definitely something for everyone from sweet to savory to simple. You can find a lot of their options online at their website, or if you happen to be walking by, I highly suggest stopping in to look for yourself!

Mary M.

Yelp
Right off 9th Avenue, but it always feels like a quiet respite from the city noise. Great service. Currently enjoying a devil's food cupcake with chocolate icing and a cappuccino. Absolutely delicious!

Yelp
Amy's Bread came through, with flying colors, on this one. Stopped by to purchase Amy's Sourdough Chocolate Twist Bread. Ohhhhh, boy.....it is SO GOOD. I brought some back for coworkers and it was justifiably gone within single digit minutes. Aside from the sourdough twist, they also have the chocolate twist with the sweeter, and less crunchy, challah bread. The staff are very helpful and they even set the order aside for me, which I highly appreciated. If you would rather enjoy your purchase at Amy's, they have a seating area, at the rear of the shop. Amy's has a lot more to offer, but if the other items are anywhere close to their chocolate twist.....you will need to stop by and enjoy their great line of sweets and goodies.

Rob B.

Yelp
Love the product here. But the service here is brutally slow. Takes forever. And often closed.

L B.

Yelp
Rancid nuts - again! This time in an overpriced peanut cookie. Really disappointing.

Michael B.

Yelp
WE NEEDED BREAD ! After lunch today at the new Din Tai Fung on Broadway we headed over here to buy some fresh bread. The reviews on Yelp were good enough for my wife. We picked out a loaf of artisan Sourdough for around $6. OH NO ! Amazingly the male cashier said he couldn't slice it because they don't have a bread slicer.....IN A BAKERY ! It's a bit of a divey looking bakery / sandwich bar. No public restroom ! NOTE - Of course with 20 million views of my Yelp reviews and pics world wide in 2023 I can tell you what is great !

Jocelyn S.

Yelp
Lots of pastries including desserts, bagels, coffee bread, etc. also sold are breakfast sandwiches on croissants and bagels. I tried their everything bagel with butter. Their bakery is super cute and service is fast and friendly.

Donna J.

Yelp
This well decorated small baked goods retailer has a variety of breads, sweet and savory baked goods, and beverages (teas, coffee). Today I had only a kitchen sink cookie and disappointingly it was just meh. Seriously, for the foot traffic you would think that it would be exceptional and maybe the other baked goods are but the cookie itself not so much. The two guys working there were a bit impatient and snarky when an inquiry was made about whether the cookie was hard or soft. Based on this one interaction I'd take my business elsewhere. Too bad because the ambience feels really cool, cozy, and a place like you'd wanna hang out read a book drink, coffee, and socialize.

Melissa B.

Yelp
I was looking for a bakery near my hotel in NYC with a bunch of pastry/dessert options and Amy's fit the bill! It's a small, cute little bakery cafe with drink options, sandwiches, breads, cakes, and more sweets! When you first walk in you are met with the bakery case and if it's busy I could see this getting a little cramped but I went mid-afternoon and there were only 2-3 people waiting in line. The line moved fast and I told the cashier what I wanted -- it was packed up quickly and I was out of there! You can definitely sit in their seating area in the back to enjoy your food and drink. They have a good amount of tables but I took mine to go. And they packaged it nicely -- the cupcake has its own individual plastic box so that it does not get ruined during transport. Both baked goods I had tasted awesome! They were fresh and just sweet enough. Definitely hit the spot for what I wanted. I would recommend this and would come back here to try other items or a coffee drink.

Chen H.

Yelp
Classy and nicely decorated bakery that also have space for seating. They offer a range of breads, as well as sweet bakeries, and coffee/tea. Perfect for a weekend breakfast with friends. I got the sesame bagel which tastes fresh. Pricing wise, they are more reasonable than many other places you will find in town.

Juan S.

Yelp
Came here to visit before a show. Got some coffee and pastries. They have an interesting selection. Definitely worth trying a few when you are around the area. Overall an OK experience with food and service.

Jack H.

Yelp
We were staying at a nearby hotel, which had a dreadful breakfast buffet, so we stopped into Amy's for a light breakfast every morning during our stay. The pastries are delicious, and she serves a hot, strong cup of coffee. The banana-bread cake is out of this world. Don't pass up the pistachio croissant twist. Quick and pleasant service. Shabby chic ambience. Highly recommended.

Robert D.

Yelp
Nice little bakery with some seating. We got the PBJ bagel, the bacon egg and cheese bagel, the sticky bun, a pain au chocolat (chocolate filled croissant), and the sourdough chocolate croissant. I was looking forward to trying the salmon and cream cheese and also the black and white cookie, but they didn't have any. Everything was great and tasted fresh. The sticky bun said it was the best in NY. It wasn't the best I've ever had but it was very close. The PBJ bagel was just okay. The bacon egg and cheese on a sesame bagel was super good and I highly recommend trying. My favorite thing we got was the sourdough chocolate twist. It was soft, chewy, with a slight crunch and just the right amount of dark chocolate. Man oh man was it tasty! The pain au chocolate was very flaky, but had almost no chocolate filling. I'd pass on that one if we went again unless we got hot chocolate to go with it. The best part is that it was walking distance from our hotel.

Lauren S.

Yelp
Small, quiet bakery with great bacon egg and cheese that they warm up on a panini press. The banana bread cake with cream cheese frosting was excellent as well.

Jaimie C.

Yelp
I've been sampling from various pastry shops in nyc, and this is definitely one of my fave. Almost everything I got from here was fire. They are known for their sticky buns, which I thought was just ok compared to everything else they offer. 1. Sticky bun- (3.5/5) tastes pretty similar to a cinnamon bun but maybe less sweet? Pretty dense, not too sweet, but also nothing too special? 2. Almond brioche toast- (4.5/5) this is really good! Subtle almond taste. Fluffy bread. Tastes and smells divine. What more can one ask for 3. Coffee cake (5/5)- I love coffee cakes, and this one is exceptional! 4. Carrot cake-(4/5) Very rich and creamy. First few bites were really good, but can be a bit too rich after the first few bites. I do like their other items more

Nick C.

Yelp
I have breen to Amy's bread many times and whenever I am in the area, I always stop in for coffee and a pastry. They also have sandwiches, cupcakes and fresh loaves of bread. I am partial to the scones, especially the mixed berry. The croissants are very good, especially the chocolate ones and of course there is a selection of coffee and tea. I usually buy a loaf or the organic Tuscan Italian when I go. It is a coffee shop gem in Hell's Kitchen! Stop by!

Shawna S.

Yelp
Overrated. Unacceptably poor customer service. Not recommended. Ownership should be embarrassed by the extraordinary level of unprofessional incompetence. I ordered a birthday cake to be delivered. Regardless of whether the cake was palatable, they omitted the essential part of a birthday cake - icing wishing the recipient a Happy Birthday. My odyssey of disappointment began with a call to their central phone line, 10 days before my delivery date, which deferred me to the store in Chelsea. I called Chelsea, only to get an obnoxiously rude employee who told me they are too busy to do deliveries and hung up on me. I called back the central phone line, who informed me they would have someone call me back. The return caller for Amy's Bread deferred me to Mercato for the delivery. Walking me through the order, I expressly and repeatedly reminded, to the point of begging, that the icing wish the recipient a happy birthday. I was reassured 3 times that I was unnecessarily concerned; it was plainly written on the confirmed order ticket. On the day of delivery, I got an unintelligible phone call from 10,000 leagues under the sea, I think telling me the driver was having trouble finding the delivery site, despite 18 inch lettering giving notice of the location, which is nearly an entire city block. Because the idiot at the other end was apparently illiterate, my surprise had to be wrecked by having the recipient go outside to find the wandering twit with my (incomplete) cake. When I called the Chelsea store to report their failure, I got a weak and useless apology from a man who started misquoting law to me, followed by "there's nothing I can do." Regardless of whether the cake was good, for $75.00, at the barest minimum, a birthday cake should read "Happy Birthday." And, adding a tip before service is rendered is insulting. Incidentally, watch your credit card - I was substantially overcharged more than my receipt. Lastly, the "manager" at the Hell's Kitchen location refused to give me his name. But, he tried to disclaim any responsibility for the botched delivery, despite the delivery service plainly identified as their agent. (See photo). Awful customer service. No accountability. I do not recommended Amy's Bread or their horrific delivery agent, Mercato. If you read my reviews, I'm very reasonable. But, I have no respect for inattention to detail or poor service. I got both, justifying the required one star.

Yelp
Delicious rye, crispy crust & nice & chewy crumb. Tastes great just by itself! Saw "bread care" advice on their website. Nice but I think eating it rightaway is the way to go. Service is nice! Little cosy nook to enjoy bread w some coffee

Adam B.

Yelp
Little bakery with a wide variety of offerings. Without narrow specialization, there are some hits and misses (or at least mehs, if not misses). But if you choose wisely, you can get some really great items. Pecan Sticky Bun: I can see why this is so popular! Lots of gooey caramel and chopped pecans on top. The outer pastry is dry and flaky. The inner pastry is soft like a cinnamon roll, though not as moist as a roll right out of the oven. Definitely my favorite of the pastries I tried. Sweet and buttery! Almond Brioche Toast: Kinda basic. Like a big block of toast that has a thin layer of almond paste spread on. The almond paste is baked on pretty good, so it's a little crunchy. It's nice with coffee, but kinda low on the personality scale compared to everything else. Red Velvet Cake: Very indulgent! Fluffy cake and light creamy frosting. I was shocked how quickly I could eat through this. It's not quite Magnolia's caliber, but pretty good considering Amy's has such a wide assortment of different baked goods. Cheddar Biscuit: Kinda airy chewy for a biscuit, not as crumbly, but it works. Very buttery with some specks of cheddar. I was feeling this. A nice savory contrast to all the sweets I tried.

Thomas A.

Yelp
My go to slice of cake spot. Amy's bread have some great baked goods such as bread, cookies, cakes etc but I love the pink cake, coconut cake and black/white devils food. Service always great no matter how busy and you can sit in the dining area if you wish. So glad they survived the pandemic era..

helena a.

Yelp
Everything was delicious. Go!! Well worth it. We had the Carrot cake, mixed berry cake, and pecan pie. All off the charts!

Olivia L.

Yelp
I'm obsessed with their sticky buns. Very cute place with nice people. Cant wait to try more of their items

Annabelle L.

Yelp
Initially, I gave this place 4/5 stars, but I HAVE to change it to 5 stars after trying their carrot cake. It was priced reasonably, large, and not too sweet at all. It could be a bit more moist, but I came late at night, so that might be why it felt a little dry. I'll definitely try their carrot cake and other cake flavors closer to opening time, as I'm sure it would be even more delicious. Thanks Amy, you did not disappoint!

Flora H.

Yelp
*** 3.5 stars *** I did a lot of research looking for a birthday cake and landed on Amy's Bread, opting for the yellow cake with pink frosting based on all the reviews and photos (it's beautiful!). The 6" round at $38.50 was very reasonably priced, especially since it feeds well more than the 4-6 people that they estimate (I would say easily double that with reasonably sized slices).I called ahead two days early to place the order and paid on pickup; they were friendly and the process was easy. As for the cake, it was definitely VERY sweet and needed to be served with vanilla ice cream. Even so it was still a bit too sweet for my liking, but the cake itself was very moist and well made.

Luke H.

Yelp
Wanted to try something new this morning. My initial plan was a Greek bakery, but it was closed. Saw Amy's was just a block away so I stopped by. A little line started at the door and it was quick to get in. Most people had to-go, so there a few open sitting places. Showed my ID and vaccination card. I sat at a small table in a corner and had a nice croissant and bacon egg cheese sandwich with cold brew iced coffee. I was wondering while my order was taking so long and found out my order was given to someone else... 12 minutes isn't that long of a wait so had no reason to complain, plus got an extra cold brew. Croissant tasted like one from Costco, so not worth $3.50.

Marianne W.

Yelp
Amy's Bread In my opinion it should be Amy's CAKES! I'm so happy I found Amy's. I have tried so many of the breads, scones and cakes over the years. I love the Coconut Cake and the Peanut Butter Cookies are the best. I get those two over and over. The coffee isn't bad either. For me this is a grab and go place. It gets really busy in here. Come better weather when I can eat outside I'll return. I get a variety to take home plus one main desert to eat right away. It's not far to Central Park where I can sit to enjoy a slice of heaven.

GLENN F.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this bakery, a block in back of the Marriott Marquis Hotel. Great service and good tasting pastries and breakfast items. The bread on the shelf looks good to take home! I just got the Hot Chocolate and Chocolate Croissant. Delicious. Busy busy in the mornings. A few tables in the back to sit before your day starts.

Audrey W.

Yelp
Popped in this morning for a loaf of bread. I was a little overwhelmed with my choices but chose the golden raisin and fennel loaf (mostly because it was the smallest). Wow it was so good! Will be back for sure.

Mei T.

Yelp
I loved the croissants and Pain au chocolate ! They were light and airy. Not too buttery. We even had a carrot muffin. So far, everything we have gotten from here were tasty and delicious!

Katherine K.

Yelp
This place is a (somewhat) hidden gem. I especially love their organic loaves of bread -- all of them! And if you're in need of a quick bite, then I'd recommend their yummy sandwiches. Also, if you're in need of a chocolate fix, then trust me...their chocolate cake is a great solution. LOL I'm so grateful that this place exists, and I've also been so grateful that -- through the years - they've been strong supporters of our dear LGBTQ+ community. I mean, their Pride decorations are on point, and bring a lot of extra love and beauty to the neighborhood. And their customer service is awesome; every employee with whom I've connected there is polite, courteous, efficient and kind. It's just a feel good place. Now that I think about it, I've honestly never had a bad treat there over the years...and we've been in this neighborhood for over a decade. I highly recommend it! Have a beautiful day, and Happy Pride 2023, friends! Best, Katherine/Kat

Trudy L.

Yelp
I made a quick stop here whirl on a dessert tour with Like A Local tours. We all tried the chocolate sourdough twist bread and it was delicious. It tasted like a babka with a chewy crust.. I'll come back again.

Michelle Y.

Yelp
Such a cute bakery, inside and out! But best of all Amy offers such a variety and delicious pastries and coffee! There were so many to choose from, I had to limit myself to four options. Blueberry danish, croissant, cheese biscuit, and almond bread! The texture, the freshness, and taste were divine. The staff who helped me was so patient and super friendly! Definitely coming back to get more!

Anna P.

Yelp
Carrot cake - very good, cake itself was more of a carrot bread consistency, not super fluffy (probably because less oil) and frosting was well balanced, although a little lemon squeeze made it much better for me. Has raisins. Recommend heating it up the next day in the microwave, the moister is much better and the cake is less dry. Carrot donut - heavier than the carrot cake. Richer, has walnuts, no raisins, more dense, more oil/butter in the recipe. A bit too sweet for me but I prefer less sweet desserts in general Baking soda bread for tea time , which was scone-like but unsweetened. Good but beware of raisins and fennel seeds if I'm not mistaken, which gives it a unique taste which I don't know whether I like it or not ... my taste buds were confused. Perfect for tea time!

Ruth M.

Yelp
So much changes each time I visit NYC, but Amy's Bread is as consistently amazing as ever. The chocolate twist and sticky bun are as good as they were twenty-five years ago.

Tiffany W.

Yelp
Passed by this crowded mini bakery and cafe. Thought it would be so amazing. Ordered: Chocolate sourdough twist- too hard, too sweet chocolate. I personally love sourdough. Kinda disappointed. Pistachio bread- forgot the name. It's ok. Not too special.

Francis A.

Yelp
Croissants were soggy, hot chocolate had not enough chocolate, and employee's are rude AF. Go to Max Brener.

Todd C.

Yelp
Solid bagel, great bread selection, good coffee. Ambience was very New Yorkish with gray & white tile floor, exposed brick & plaster walls. Service was fast.

Ken G.

Yelp
I was walking by and thought I'd try something from this place and I'm glad I did - it was great! I had a slice of "Definitely Devil's Food Cake" and it was fantastic - moist and rich bittersweet chocolate cake surrounded by dark chocolate frosting. The frosting was very chocolatey and not too focused on being super sweet. This is a great dessert if you want something decadent. This is even better with a nice glass of milk.

Charmaine T.

Yelp
Very delicious! It's $4.50 for one sticky bun. I enjoyed how fluffy the bread is. They're also generous with the caramel and nuts.

James R.

Yelp
My gf was really excited to run across this location as she loves Amy's Bread and their cakes. She got a slice of carrot cake and a slice of birthday cake. The carrot cake was very decent. Cake was moist. Not too sweet. Cream cheese frosting was on point. The birthday cake was fine. Cake was moist but the frosting was really sweet and dry. I know that this can happen when you add extra powdered sugar to the buttercream. Staff was very friendly. Would get the carrot cake again.

Bay G.

Yelp
The pistachio twist is wonderful and unlike anything I have ever had anywhere. 10/10 for creativity, originality, and execution. The challah twist was OK, but not great. Frittata sandwich made for a good breakfast. The carrot cake donut was good, but I probably should have just had a slice of the carrot cake! No, I did not eat all these things on one visit. I went here three times. All three times the staff was friendly and efficient. Love this place. The Wi-Fi works great. They do not have a restroom. Apparently, they are two chairs shy of the legal minimum seating capacity that requires a public restroom. So, bring two folding chairs with you if you want to ask to use the employee restroom! Just kidding. Go before you go. And about that seating - it is in the back and was never crowded, even when there was a line to get into the bakery. Seems like most folks get their baked treasures to go.

Fox E.

Yelp
I wandered Amylessly around Manhattan until I found Amy's Bread, and I have to say, it was pretty good. Cute little bread shop in the Midtown area and extremely popular. I came here on a very rainy day and got a couple of pastries that the woman here recommended that I try. To be honest, I wasn't blown away and I think the reviews might be overblowing the quality and deliciousnessand uniqueness a little bit, but in Manhattan there's a lot of bad overpriced stuff, and this is certainly the "real deal" and better than most bakeries, and more innovative too. Also, the service was nicem even if prices were a little higher than they should be (even by NYC standards), the treats weren't bad at all.

Amanda S.

Yelp
I always wanted to try Amy's Bread ever since I first saw a pictures of their decadent cake slices, notably the vanilla cake with pink buttercream frosting. You can only imagine my excitement as I headed towards the bakery on my first morning in New York. There was quite a line that just barely stopped at the entrance but it moved rather quicker. I waited no longer than 8 minutes. My cake slice (that beautiful pink frosted perfection) tasted just as I imagined! It was very spongy and moist, the vanilla flavor was on point, and the buttercream frosting was silky smooth. It was sure heavenly. The chocolate cupcake I got for later was no different. The frosting was a little bit more firm, almost like ganache, it was like eating chocolate. I probably could have eaten just the frosting and be happy. I also got a few loaves, my favorite being a large sourdough that sent my tastebuds to heaven. Or at least that's what it felt like. I also got a huge baguette that I seriously just ate plain, it was that good. I would definitely recommend anyone in NY and travelers to try Amy's Bread. The price is right (for NY, mind you), the shop is adorable AND the products are delicious. What more could you ask for?

Charlotte B.

Yelp
The perfect place to stop after arriving at PABT and the perfect place to stop before heading back home to PABT. The bakery is full of a variety of different daily baked goods, its so hard to just choose one. The locals come here early and get a bag of a variety of baked goods for the weekend. They also provide coffee drinks. A cute cozy area to sit in the back. The quality of the baked goods is amazing! I was tempted by the cakes on the stands at the entrance. Yummy ginormous slice of soft gooey chocolate cake. Lovely staff too!

E P.

Yelp
The food here is delicious but the dining area is darkly lit and sad to sit in. Every time I've been here the employees seem like they'd rather be anywhere else. Nobody smiles or says "welcome." The guy who took my order looked like his mother had just died. Get your food to go.

Jay W.

Yelp
Reiterating my love for Amy's. Just watched one of the employees demonstrate more courtesy and patience than I'd expect from the typical NYC establishment toward a customer who didn't speak much English. Bread still bomb and reasonably priced despite prices these days.

Alicia B.

Yelp
I got a slice of their Black and White cake near closing, and it was great! Super moist and tender cake, and a thick slice for 5.75. The icing is sweet and sugary, but not in a sickly way, and the ratio is practically perfect. The chocolate layers are super rich and thick. Everyone was super nice as well!

Aysha A.

Yelp
It's so tiny but just enough variety to have something for everyone! A bit warm inside as well because of the oven going I suppose.. my favorite is the pistachio twist but it could really use more pistachio if you ask me!
