I want to begin by saying "I'm sorry". It feels wrong to give an institution like Alberts such a poor review. Also, I want to say right off the bat that I am not an expert in Jamaican food. I have my go-to place in the Annex that I absolutely love, but I would never claim to know alot about Jamaican food. I've lived 'Albert's' neighbourhood for 6 years, but I never tried it until today because it was more pricey than the jerk place I'm used to. I ended up going in today because I'm pregnant and I was like "oh my God, I'm so lucky to have (what many people told me was) one of the city's best jerk places down the street", it seemed like kismet.
The line moved very slowly; it was dinner time and they only had one person taking orders and she was also packaging them. It's not like I'm in a huge rush or anyting, but I just never understand how business owners/managers can be so tone deaf about the wait their customers experience. I was pregnant hungry which is worse than 'normal hungry', but more importantly than that, as a pregnant woman these days I love my spicy food. Neither the chicken nor the rice were spicy at all, but that's not really my gripe, the real issue was that I requested extra hot sauce twice, but she still forgot it. I just feel like staffing your place a little better could prevent silly mistakes like that.
Anyway, let's get down to flavour town. The bulk of this bad review is due to the flavour. Yeah the marinade penetrated the meat, but overall from the inside to the skin, the flavour was not very good, it was bland and overly salty. The predominant flavour was salt. It kind of made me think of the flavour of chicken stock cubes, mixed with prepackaged jerk seasoning (not that I've ever had that, it seems like that). It reminded me a lot of jerk that I had at a Christmas party once... A Jamaican guy brought jerk to this party, I thought it was such a privilege to try homemade Jamaican jerk, but it was the worst I ever had in my life. I hate to say that Albert's was just a step above that (again, I feel really bad leaving this review).
The rice and peas were actually very flavorful, they were good. But the gravy was hugely problematic. It was full of all kinds of chunks and bones, it had no thickness, it was like water, and the top half of the container of my side order of gravy was just oil or chicken fat. the flavour on the gravy was obviously very similar to the flavour on the chicken...overly salty and bland.
Hhhmmmm, Can something be both overly salty and bland? What I mean to say is, I've made jerk at home many times, but nothing in Alberts tasted distinctly like any of those flavours I know were supposed to be there. The coleslaw had good texture, good flavour.
I would absolutely love for someone who knows about jerk in Jamaica to fully school me and tell me that Albert's is the real deal, and that most jerk tastes like that. I would love for them to tell me that they've been to the one in the Annex and it's like the McDonald's of Jamaican food (though I do see many Caribbean and West Indian people at that one). I would be totally open to that education. But when it comes down to it, if I'm talking flavour, I just feel like Albert's was not very good.
