A Trip Through Oman, Where Skyscrapers Are Illegal and Hospitality Runs Deep

"Arriving at the Ritz-Carlton property called Al Bustan Palace, I discovered it to be an actual palace: a sweeping marble plaza leads to an atrium with a soaring dome almost entirely chiseled into swirling Arabic designs, and portraits of Sultan Qaboos hang prominently in the lobby; the young check-in clerk told me that “his majesty” built it a few decades ago for a Gulf Cooperation Council summit, and the hotel has recently unveiled a renovation that emphasizes traditional Omani design." - Saki Knafo Saki Knafo Saki Knafo is a writer based in New York City. We had the most wonderful day at Al Bustan Palace. The team was so kind and welcoming, and really went the extra mile to make us feel happy for our six-night stay. Particularly Ceren who was so wonderful and compassionate, and really cherished time with our four-month-old. The rooms were spacious and renovated, and the pool and ocean front area was well maintained with wonderful staff. All the team members – from the valet drivers, to the staff grabbing towels, to housekeeping - were all so polite and warm. We would love to come back again!

The location of this hotel in the bay is simply breathtaking – the views of the sea are stunning, and the beach is perfect for snorkeling. The Deluxe Rooms with sea view are attractive, but it is clear that some of them are older and show signs of wear. It would be worthwhile for management to consider investing in refurbishing these rooms to enhance the guest experience. The service is courteous and helpful, although it lacks a personal touch that would make a stay truly memorable. The food is good, yet not quite at the level of a Ritz Carlton. The pool area is inviting, and the staff are very attentive and accommodating. A crucial aspect that could set this hotel apart in the long term is its environmental responsibility. The hotel’s private reef is a unique and valuable asset. Protecting it from destructive fishing practices, such as trawling with nets, would not only preserve the natural beauty and marine life but also establish the hotel as a leader in eco-tourism. By actively promoting sustainable practices and safeguarding the marine ecosystem, the hotel could create a distinctive identity among the region’s five-star properties and provide a truly responsible and forward-thinking experience for guests. Developing eco-tourism initiatives here would offer enormous potential: from guided snorkeling tours that respect the reef, to educational programs about marine conservation. Such measures would ensure that the pristine environment remains intact for future visitors and provide a meaningful, sustainable experience that aligns with global trends in responsible travel. It would be a real loss if the reef and marine life were compromised, as this is one of the hotel’s greatest natural advantages.

Amazing Hotel with even more amazing and kind staff! They make all the difference and the welcoming is very warm. They make sure to go the extra mile to make your stay as comfortable as possible. We stayed in the junior suite with garden view and enjoyed the room very much. Everything was kept clean and orderly. The restaurants are nice and have a good selection of food from around the world. We would encourage everyone to try the spa aswell. We will be back sometime for sure and can only thank everyone here for making our stay memorable.

To be honest, not something wooow I prefer hotels in Egypt on Oman. We just went there for 3 nights but it didn’t worth it I’m not going to lie I was expecting a lot of things, very limited buffet for breakfast lunch and dinner although it was delicious, they didn’t have the water pool for everyone it was only one almost for kids between 2 to 7 years old. Well the beach is public so you can swim with guests outside of the hotel. Normal rooms, location is far from city center you need a car to move around. Nothing fancy as they promote for it like the unique experience in Muscat, full of old retired Europeans. I can only say that it had a beautiful view because it’s surrounded by mountains. I don’t recommend

Good hotel and very good service, Rooms a big, however beds are not so comfortable. Huge area to enjoy with or without family. Swimming pool is beautiful, and all the green area is super clean. Beach is very clean, they have paddle and a nice Gym.

We had the most wonderful and memorable stay at Al Bustan Palace. It was our first time in Oman and the hospitality could not have been better. Our Marriott loyalty was rewarded with a very nice upgrade. We enjoyed spending time on the property and going to explore Muscat as well. Breakfast had a lot of variety and was delicious. Would highly recommend booking the afternoon tea in the lobby as well.

My stay at Al Bustan Palace was exceptional. The place is truly luxurious, and the staff were incredibly professional and friendly. Room service was excellent and fast, and their attention to detail really stood out. A remarkable experience, and I would definitely come back again.

Rooms are pretty small for the price tag' and the walls are very thin from room to the hallways. Over all a decent hotel good breakfast its just not worth the price tag. Also this is good to keep in mind at any hotel in Oman if you ask the concierge to get you a can it will be 3 times what it should be as the taxi system is designed to absolutely rip of tourist. Always us the taxi app and walk off property of you have to it will save you between 25 and 75 usd per ride.
