My family and I stayed at this hotel for two nights while exploring Portland, Maine, and overall, we had an enjoyable experience. The room was spacious and well-maintained, and the lobby and common areas created a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere. Initially, we felt the hotel deserved a 5-star rating. However, an incident during our second night significantly impacted our opinion. After a pleasant evening out, we returned to the hotel to relax. My 6-year-old son noticed the snack area near the front desk and was thrilled to see his favorite treat—vanilla Häagen-Dazs ice cream. We purchased it for him and went back to our room. When he opened it, he complained it was too hard and began chipping at it with his spoon. Initially, I thought it was just frozen solid, but moments later, he started gagging and said, “It doesn’t taste good.” This was surprising because he loves vanilla ice cream and rarely complains about it. Curious, I took a bite and was shocked to discover it was spoiled. The flavor and texture clearly indicated the ice cream had thawed and refrozen at some point, compromising its quality. Concerned, I returned it to the front desk, explained the issue, and asked them to address the situation. The receptionist apologized and assured me the other items in the refrigerator appeared fine, but I found this response unsatisfactory since she hadn’t inspected the ice creams individually. I recommended they remove all the ice cream to prevent other guests from experiencing the same issue. Unfortunately, the damage had already been done. My son’s stomach reacted poorly to the spoiled ice cream, and he suffered from diarrhea throughout the night. This unexpected situation cut our trip short, as we decided to head home to ensure he received proper care. While the hotel itself was lovely in terms of accommodations and atmosphere, this incident left a lasting negative impression. If you choose to stay here, I advise caution when purchasing items from the snack area. Management needs to take more proactive measures to guarantee the quality and safety of the food they offer to guests.
