"COVID-19 Update: Open for pickup. Before there were disruptors and influencers, there was: chocolate. Compartès has been at the forefront of the chocolate scene—yes, there is a chocolate scene—since Elvis, Sinatra, and the Kennedys were fans. And now the Los Angeles brand offers people who love chocolate and food and chocolate with food a peek behind the cocoa. The La Brea flagship store meets chocolate factory is open for public tours, and it’s as gorgeous and considered as the brand’s signature packaging. And man alive, does it smell good. Designed by owner and CEO Jonathan Grahm, the Wonka-esque space is a 6,000-square-foot marble-stainless-steel-and-brass dive into the world of Compartès. A tour will take you through every step of the chocolate-making process: from the roasting and toasting of specialty ingredients (homemade doughnuts, churros, farmers’ market nuts and berries, plus a laundry list of superfoods for the brand’s new line of vegan chocolate) to the moment the bars get poured into shape. Compartès will be celebrating seventy years of sweetness in 2020, but the chocolatiers still use traditional techniques, so watching truffles and other confections come to life is more old-fashioned whimsy than prescriptive assembly line. The kids will love the magical environment, and their parents can expect to pick up design inspiration along with impossibly delicious chocolate bars. The entire place is filled with antique furniture and Parisian design notes, all thoughtfully chosen by Grahm. The space is available for tours, tastings, and private events (aka birthday party gold).
