"Tucked into a Jackson Heights shopping center so hard to spot from 31st Avenue that you can’t see it a block away, Cannelle (which means “cinnamon”) is run by patissiers Jean Claude Perennou and G. Sabaratnam and is thronged most hours. It serves an impressive array of French, African‑American, Italian, and Dominican pastries plus generous, cheap sandwiches — the bread in those sandwiches couldn’t be fresher. On a first visit I favored a dense, raisin‑studded bread pudding, a mousse sandwiched between layers of chocolate cake, and a novel raspberry croissant; plenty of seating and good coffee encourage lingering." - Robert Sietsema
