"How did it strike you on arrival? This classic, elegant, five-star hotel has stood the test of time. The first floor houses a small museum of antiquities, a theme repeated throughout the hotel: All rooms feature unique designs and ancient artifacts. What’s the crowd like?Claris Hotel tends to attract a mature crowd. The typical guest is a well-to-do, 50- or 60-something, either traveling for business or as part of a couple. It is also a favorite among Spanish celebrities. Tell us about your room. The décor is moody and meticulous, and my particular room also contains works of pre-Columbian art that are part of the Derby Hotel group's private collection. How are the beds? The sheets are 100 percent Egyptian cotton from premium Barcelona brand Bassols. Your choice of a double bed or two singles. Any in-room amenities of note? All rooms come with a smartphone for you to use, with unlimited 4G data and calling. How are the bathrooms? The bathrooms feel tasteful and expensive: black titanium, Brazilian granite, marble bathtub. The White Company of London supplies the luxurious bathroom products. How's the connectivity? There's free Wi-Fi and free, unlimited data at all times through your complimentary in-room smartphone. Anything stand out about other services and features?Claris Hotel has an elegant rooftop pool and bar area with ample seating space and great city views. Restaurant La Terraza del Claris, run by Michelin-starred chef Aurelio Morales, is situated upstairs next to the roof terrace and serves fresh Mediterranean cuisine. Bottom line: worth it, and why?Rooms are on the small side and not exactly cheap, but there are good deals to be found in the off season. Plus you're getting to stay in a distinctly decorated, five-star hotel in a prime location, just off the Passeig de Gràcia." - Isabelle Kliger
