San Francisco is a fantastic city for families, as there are plenty of activities to keep the young ones occupied, and best of all, many of these adventures are pretty parent friendly too. From the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory to the famous City Lights Bookstore and the Walt Disney Family Museum, families of all ages will find plenty to do while visiting San Francisco. "Walt Disney Family Museum This museum does so much more than tell you about Walt Disney's life—it reminds you of the struggles that all creatives face throughout their careers. The experience is unexpected, interactive, and current for kids and adults alike. The view onto the Golden Gate Bridge from one of the top floor galleries is unforgettable—even, of course, if there's fog!"

Nest

Interior designer · Pacific Heights

"Nesting on Fourth Street in Berkeley The beautiful boutique Nest on Fourth Street in Berkeley, takes me right back to France even before I walk in. The displays of the books, fabrics, gifts, jewelry and artwork through through the glass windows was enough to make my heart leap when I first laid eyes on this new location. I've been a fan of their San Francisco location (in the Fillmore district) for a while now and the fact that this new branch is only a few blocks from where I work every day, is as dangerous as it is wonderful. Part antiques, part clothing, part whimsical gift store- it's a magical 'interior store' to say the least. 1815 Fourth Street, Berkeley, CA. The Berkeley branch is evidently so new, they don't yet have a website for this location and it doesn't register on Google Maps (which is why this post is about the Berkeley store, but on the San Francisco map because of its original location)."

Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory

Cookie shop · Chinatown

"Although most of the manufacturing of fortune cookies is done outside of San Francisco , one factory is still running and is a popular tourist spot in San Francisco's Chinatown. Of course the smell of the cookies being freshly made will draw you in. You'll get a free sample and be able to buy then in various-sized packages and flavors. If you can elbow your way in you can observe the making of the cookies, where lots of people fold them by hand. Whatever money they make on cookies probably pales in comparison with the 50 cents they charge per photo—quite entrepreneurial of them!"

"In an age when many independent bookstores have surrendered to the advance of chain stores and Amazon, City Lights is a true survivor. Since it was founded by poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti in 1956, it has served as a gathering place for San Francisco’ s literary communities. Everyone from beat poets to left-wing critics of America have found a welcome here. City Lights is also a publishing house, with Allen Ginsberg’s Howl and Other Poems being perhaps the single most famous book it has put out, though it counts scores of other works by some of America’s leading contemporary literary figures on its list. You can drop in anytime to find an unexpected tome, and the store also has a crowded calendar of readings."

TANTRUM

Permanently Closed

"Fun for Adults and Kids This fun, poppy outfit sells kids' clothing and toys, all in one of the most colorful stores in San Francisco . At the back of the store, the large sign reading "TANTRUM" pulls you in like a ringmaster. The carnival-themed letters hang over big-top stripped curtains that may have hid, at one time, performers."

Andy Goldsworthy's Wood Line

Scenic spot · Presidio

"Andy Goldsworthy's Wood Line A few blocks east of Goldsworthy's more prominent Spire is this installation of fallen trees snaking through the still standing ones. Wood Line is located within the cypress grove near the intersection of Presidio Boulevard and West Pacific Avenue, just off Lovers’ Lane. Thousands drive by this spot and never notice it. It's a beautiful work. View it, walk around it, walk on it, experience how it changes over time."

Lands End Trail

Lincoln Park

"Labyrinth with the Perfect View Land's End in San Francisco is an easy hike with huge payoff. This labyrinth sits just below the Legion of Honor parking lot and the Lincoln Park golf course. You can then scramble down to a beautiful rocky beach. By AFAR Traveler , AFAR Contributor"

Ferry Plaza Farmers Market

Farmers' market · Financial District

"Fresh Fruit, Produce and Custard-Filled Doughnuts At SF's Saturday Market Outdoor markets always tell a story about their city: what goods are for sale, what foods are locally grown and how the residents interact with one another as they buy and sell their wares. San Francisco 's Saturday Market at the Ferry Terminal building is one market not to be missed. From fine art to fresh fiddlehead ferns, you can sample and purchase anything that your heart desires. Come hungry: treats like custard-filled doughnuts, cinnamon toffee topped with dark chocolate, French macarons and homemade ice cream, amongst many other healthier options (but who needs those when you're on vacation?), await you."

Aquarium of the Bay

Aquarium · Fisherman's Wharf

"At Pier 39, more than 20,000 sea creatures from the San Francisco Bay and California coastline await your visit. Walking through the aquarium's transparent tunnels immerses you in the bay's diverse aquatic life, as you come eye-to-eye with the native sevengill sharks, watch the hypnotic motion of the jellyfish, and even touch a grand bat ray’s wing, if you dare. Four adorable otters live here, too. The aquarium hosts daily naturalist-led animal feedings, and curators give talks about tide pools, octopi, and climate change, interactive experiments. New virtual-reality experiences allow you up-close "access" to whales and polar bears. Otters, considered watershed ambassadors, are indicators of healthy waterways. Splurge on a behind-the-scenes tour and shark-feeding tour in addition to the regular admission ticket, and you'll have an unforgettable day at this amazing waterside habitat."

Nick's Lighthouse

Seafood restaurant · Fisherman's Wharf

"Fresh Seafood at Fisherman's Wharf There's still a fish market vibe at the Fisherman's Wharf harbor, packed with stall upon stall of delectable catches. If you're going to try a local favorite—and you should—try the clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. Other tasty choices include crab, lobster, and shrimp."

"Inside Fun on a rainy day in SF Its a good way to spend a few hours with your buddies when the weather is crappy outside. The climbing gym rents harnesses and shoes and will even give you a free class on how to belay."

Bi-Rite Creamery

Ice cream shop · Mission Dolores

"The Most Delicious Ice Cream in the World- Seriously. It's no wonder that on any given weekday afternoon, the line for ice cream at this legendary San Francisco establishment goes out the door and wraps around the block. Once you try it for yourself, you'll understand: it's just that good. With flavors like salted caramel, honey lavender and roasted banana, it is one of the creamiest, most tasty treats you could ever experience. The location is an added bonus: right across from Dolores Park in the Mission District, grabbing a cone and heading to the park on a sunny day is a scoop of heaven on earth. Here's a tip: if you get a small cup, you can still get 3 different flavors (I learned of this afterwards, so of course I had to head back the next day to make sure). If I lived in San Francisco, everyday would be a Bi-Rite kind of day."
