"Trattoria Da Danilo is like a postcard—exactly what you envision a typical Roman trattoria would look like. The charming room is crowded with wooden tables covered with checkered tablecloths; the walls are decorated with vintage photos. Serious food-lovers flock from all around Rome—and the world—for the legendary carbonara here, which, like the cacio e pepe and amatriciana, is the dish's purest expression. After one meal, you'll be forever ruined on all future versions." - Maresa Manara

"Trattoria Da Danilo is the perfect place to start the evening and any visit to Rome—especially if you’ve never had Roman carbonara before. Da Danilo has one of the best carbonaras in the city and unwavering fidelity to typical Roman dishes like trippa, coratella, and baccalà, and an excellent selection alla griglia (meats from the grill). The vibe is super casual and friendly so that anyone can feel at home."

A nice restaurant with upstairs and downstairs table cloth tables that are intimately spaced. The establishment has been visited by several well known celebrities. The owner/manager was not as friendly as the waiting staff. The fried lamb was unusually breaded and not tasty like lamb typically is served. The Carbonara is highly recommended as some of the best you can experience. The Tiramisu is moderately good and too creamy. The atmosphere is decorated with pictures of actors and sport celebrities that have attended in the distant past. Dishes are reasonably priced and valued. If there are 4-6 in your party you will eat upstairs and 3 or less you will likely eat downstairs in the basement with no natural lighting.

They refused me twice due to capacity, but the one experience I had there was amazing! Pasta with bacon, cheese and pistachio sauce! One of the best pasta I ever had. It is possible to pay by card, but there are no towels on toilet.

Great food, greater selection of wines, and even greater atmosphere (we were downstairs). But the service was absolutely the best. Andrea advised us with everything, so we tried fantastic local wine, cheese and sausage antipasti and traditional pasta. What a great evening!

Food was lovely and the waiters were very friendly. I absolutely recommend trying their cacio e pepe! Fantastico!

Everything was perfect Paste Cacio e Pepe 10€ home made pasta From outside if you are not used with authentic trattoria, it looks shady, but it’s original Italian experience

Best carbonara. This Restoraunt been selected one out of 4 others Restoraunt in Rome for best carbonara competition. It means a lot!!!We were brought to this place by our roman friends and their love to carbonara pasta. We had an amazing lunch. We had tried toasted ox tail , mozzarella with grilled artichoke, and lamp chops. Service was very good and also on top. I would highly recommend this place for truly carbonara pasta and good ,tasty meat.

Hands down the BEST MEAL WE HAD IN ROME!! To take that a step further, this was also the best Carbonara had in all of Italy! We tried a few places in Rome as well as Naples (and some other similar pastas in Florence) but nothing came close to this one. Quite random that we ended up coming here. It's because we were staying in an apartment around the corner of or out trip. Really glad we found this place because that Carbonara was the most beautiful thing ever. 10 days later and I am still thinking of it! Service took a really really long time (both to take our order and for the food to come out) but the food was actually spectacular! Got the Lamb Chops, the Sliced Beef with Rosemary and Beef Fillet with Pecorino di Fossa Cheese (they don't have any chicken here). All items were really tasty. The flavor and the tenderness and everything was next level! The Pecorino di Fossa Cheese sauce was lovely! That carbonara again.. it actually had that bacon flavor all throughout and it was properly creamy and had just the right amount of cheesiness and saltiness going on. Such a beautiful dish overall. Dad said that this was his most memorable meal of the entire trip in Italy.

Google
I would give 10 stars, if available❤️ This place is awesome. We were served by Andrea. We came across this trattoria by accident. We wanted to go to a different place but it was full and we didn’t have reservation. I have to say it was the best thing that could have happened. Didn’t have reservation either but it took us less than 5 minutes to be attended. The best food we had tried in our stay in Rome. From the wine to the coffee there was perfection. Thank you Andrea and Trattoria do Danilo for such an amazing experience. Looking forward to coming back.

Yelp
We had a reservation and once they saw we had kids, they said they had no reservation for us even though I showed them an email confirmation. They were rude and gave a bunch of varying excuses despite empty tables clearly visible.

Krystal M.

Yelp
Saw a video on their cheese wheel pasta and was very excited to try it. You really need to make a reservation here as there is not much seating, however we got there early and they were able to get us in. I ordered the Cacio de Pepe, and my husband ordered the carbonara. So unlike the video they did not come to the table to toss your pasta in the cheese wheel but I did see them prepare it. Pasta in Italy in general Al denti and continues to "soften" as you eat. Overall it was ok I ended up having a better Cacio de Pepe elsewhere but the ambiance and wine selection was very nice.

Amber C.

Yelp
Rude and didn't recognize our reservation. When we got there we were refused service.

Brooke J.

Yelp
Like others my husband and I would refused served. I am very obviously pregnant and we walked over 3 miles to get here. Immediately at the door we were told we had no reservation - when I showed him our reservation that our hotel had personally called to confirm, he did not even check our name and just yelled again no reservation. The only reason I can think is that we are American. There is no excuse to treat people this way without cause, especially those excited to be in the city and try your restaurant. Would give zero stars if I could.

Yelp
Busy Italian spot for pasta and Roman dishes! We wanted to go here for all the great Google reviews (not sure why there's a big difference between the reviews here and on Google). We tried one night but it was booked. Another night, we were able to take a table but were given an hour limit due to reservations, which was fine with us. I asked for a glass of white wine which they were out of, so the server brought me something else that was great. My husband ordered a red sauce pasta with beef. The noodles were large tubes and the sauce was incredible. It had tons of flavor but nothing too heavy. I, on the other hand, mistakenly ordered beef stomach! "Trippa a la Romana." My husband and I laughed in the end and ate it not to be wasteful. However, it's definitely not my kind of dish! Overall, nice experience.

Yelp
Our first night in Rome, we tried to get a table here but they were closing & we didn't get a seat. I am so grateful we didn't give up: a few nights later, we were able to secure a table. The staff knew many of the clientele, which made it feel like a community. My husband and I like to try to quietly fit into whatever culture we're traveling to, so we are pretty lowkey and try not to be demanding, or have put American expectations on an Italian restaurant (and setting expectations can go a long way when you're traveling!). I will never forget the cacio e pepe tossed in the wheel of cheese at your table. One word: OUTRAGEOUS. The wine was wonderful, the vibe was so perfect and so Roman, the waiter was friendly & gave us our space. The next time we're in Rome, we will be sure to visit again. PS: (I saw lots of comments on Yelp about possibly racist behavior from the staff; which is horrible!! No one should be mistreated because of their race. My husband is black, and fortunately, we did not have a negative or racist experience, FWIW.)

Yelp
Best carbonara in Rome! We arrived on a Thursday evening without a reservation and had no problems obtaining a table. Immediately we saw a mixed antipasto go out and we wanted that! We asked what it was (half in English, half in Italian) and they were more than happy to assist! The carbonara here is hands down the best I've ever had - and the cacio e pepe? We are still arguing over which was better! We also ordered the secondi - the filet with pecorino sauce was tremendous! Our waiter recommended this one and did not disappoint!!!!

Yelp
Terrible. This place was highly recommended - I am not sure why. First, they serve BARILLA dried pasta and another dried pasta. It is not fresh or homemade. I have a photo of their storage room because they sat us there. Second, they sit all Non-Italians downstairs in the basement. All Italians sit on the main floor. Third, the service was no good. The server is like your very pushy and rude cousin from Jersey. Lastly, medium cooked meat means bloody rare here. Photo is also posted. If you want to pay 80 euro for barilla pasta and to be segregated based on nationality, this place is for you. Sadly, this was our last dinner in Italia.

Yelp
Wow. On vacation with 10. Asked a friend who lives in Rome for a recommendation close to hotel. Made a reservation through hotel concierge. Walked over with our party just as they were about to open (7:45). Staff were out front having a smoke. Asked for our table. No table for 10 available. Asked about 1 table of 6, 1 of 4. Rudely told no. Got the distinct impression it was because we were American. Would have loved to try the food. Had a great meal with great service across the street.

Yelp
There are no words that can describe this place. The host was so rude to me and my family, refused us service, told us to go "be with our kind of people." I'm shocked people like this are allowed to run restaurants. Not okay, I'd give zero stars if I could.

Yelp
If you are African American and want to try this place DONT! This place gets awesome reviews according to the internet. However, if you look at the newest reviews, this place is definitely going down hill. I happen to look for a restaurant that I shouldn't miss while in Rome, and this one came up. I walked up to the restaurant alone, at about 745 to notice it completely EMPTY! Standing outside, was the Hostess and Bar Tender. I politely asked "in English", if the restaurant was open, due to no one being inside. The Hostess looked at me with a rude stare and responded with a mean tone, "What Do you think?" Ummmmm, that still didn't answer my question, so I assumed that meant yes. I walked in hoping to be served, since there was not one person there, but noticed she didn't walk in behind me. Instead she yells in broken english, "You want eat?" I still being polite responded, "Yes, I would like try your food." Her response was "NO!" I was at a lost for words, wondering if it had to do with my skin tone, being American, or they just don't want to make money? Again, I'll point out, there was not one person in the building, and I was alone; so dinner would definitely be fast. She then laughed, came directly in my face, where i could smell the smoke coming out her mouth from her cigarette, and asked, "Are you have booking?" I didn't know what that meant, but then figured it out, and clarified, by asking, If i needed a reservation? The Hostess never responded, she walked off and continued smoking outside, speaking Italian to her coworker. I stood there for about 5 more seconds and just walked off! Sorry for the owner, this was my last Saturday in Rome, in which i had NO BUDGET for this meal! I believe this was due to my RACE, because if you read the other reviews, many have came WITHOUT reservations, and were served quickly! I guess people still judge books by their cover, their lost!

Yelp
Ordered 3 different pastas initially and waitress said we could not order 3 different ones because it was tough for the kitchen. Then ordered tiramisu and the waitress said she cannot serve it to us with the food because Italy doesn't do that. Then we wanted to order coffee and they said we could only order water. Kept insisting on what we could not order it was so tough we left without eating.

Yelp
Worst place ever. DO NOT GO! Hate Americans and children. We waited all day until 745 when they opened to go and denied. An Italian couple came in and they let them in. The place was empty and the women at the door was a miserable lady and stood in doorway to block us. She is sad and needs to take anger out on the world. Poor lady and business. I hope she doesn't spread her misery to the world because then the world would be a sad place. AGAIN, do not give your money to this business. She should stay home. I repeat, DO NOT GIVE SERVICE HERE.

Yelp
I came here based on Yelp recommendations and was somewhat disappointed. The Carbonara was exceptional, controversially with spaghetti rather than rigatoni and more french style presentation (an elegant mold with crunchy bacon slice decoration) rather than roman simplicity. The coda alla vaccinara was very tasty and presented beautifully in a heavy peasant style bowl. However, one of the waiters was brusk, visibly irritated by having to wait more than 30 seconds for an order and when he bought the bill I had the suspicion that it wouldn't be correct. Unfortunately, I was proved right and there was a mysterious 10 euros added to the bill. I'm not sure if this is just something they pull on tourists (I was with english speaking family) but it left a bitter taste on an otherwise great meal. Peccato

Yelp
Like others who left reviews here, the restaurant was recommended but they refused to let me even make a reservation. There is no way to make a reservation online, I called the restaurant three times and no one answers the phone. I went in person and they refused to seat me even though there were empty tables. They told me I need to make a reservation and that they have nothing for the rest of the week - it was Monday. I explained that I tried to make a reservation, and that if they can't seat me tonight I would like to make a reservation for next week and they said they won't take reservations for next week. They were so rude and treated me so poorly. Honestly I was shocked at the poor treatment and the whole restaurant was watching. For some reason they didn't want me there and all I can think is that it's because I'm a foreigner. So forget these a-holes, there is plenty to choose from in Rome.

Yelp
My experience didn't even get the opportunity to include food. Just can't even believe how rude this woman was to me. I just walked for 40 minutes in the July heat at noon to get here. I was told the 3 empty tables were reserved. I asked if I could wait for a table. A couple had just stood up and left. The owner came and barked, "what do you want? They are all taken." I asked if even the one that just emptied was taken and if I could wait. She said slowly to me as if I was stupid, "they are all reserved." And she walked away without even letting me respond. Is this normal? I thought it was unacceptable for any human being, let alone a proprietor in the service industry, to speak to someone this way and I felt obliged to publicize it in every forum they boasted about high reviews from on their door. I question whether her behavior had anything to do with my appearance. I am mistaken for a teenager by almost everyone, though I am in my mid to late 20's.

Yelp
This place is a rip-off! The waiters and people who work there are rude and jerks. We found it online and walked extra from the Coliseum to try their food. We ordered a pint of beer, a platter of house specialties, and a pasta ( € 45 order for 3), the waiter took the order and came back saying to order more because we haven't ordered a 3 full plates! Appetizer has to be shared and we need to order 1 more carbonara. Haha - he even decided what we have to order to charge their extra € 10 euro. Such a nonsense ). If you think we are the stupid tourists to rip off - no way! We left this ridicuolus place and went to a neighbour restaurant. I am sure there are better places in Rome

John M.

Yelp
I ignored the numerous bad reviews and tried to make a Thursday night dinner reservation a full day in advance in the non-busy winter season. They said they had no dinner tables at all for anytime. Very unlikely. Draw your own conclusions. Too bad. Yelp will catch up with them eventually.

Yelp
Meh. That's the best I can come up to describe this place. The service was awful, the food so-so and too salty. If this is "typical" of other Roma restaurants, you're better off finding another. A bit disappointed in E. Minchilli of Eat Italy fame for leading us astray with this restaurant. For those that want a longer description: we sat downstairs, which seemed far more pleasant than the overly bright upstairs. The server seemed pleasant at first, but then told us we couldn't order the sampler appetizer for our table of 5 to share, but then after ordering a different appetizer he came back to tell us it was ok to order (we skipped it). Once the food showed up 45 mins later (note: Tuesday night), we ate a few bites and remarked that everything was far too salty and rich. Although I'm from the U.S., I'm not afraid of salt but this was overwhelming. We ordered more wine: that showed up 15 mins later. More water too, which never came until the waiter remembered once he cleared all of our plates and empty glasses. Once we got the check, he came to the table to tell us they didn't accept credit cards but then later that MasterCard was fine, and that we could take it upstairs to pay. The cashier upstairs didn't acknowledge us at all as he took the card, ran it, and tossed the receipt at us. In all, the experience was meh. Side note: the light in the ladies' room didn't work, so the women at the table had to keep the door open/cracked while using the bathroom. Pleasant.

Ashli E.

Yelp
By far the worst dining experience here in Rome. The service was terrible - the waiter left TWICE in the middle of us ordering to wait on other tables. The food was subpar. We were refused a side dish of plain noodles to feed our child. They refused to use our credit card to pay the bill and would not accept American currency. When 3 people in our group left to find a bank or ATM, our waiter said all banks were closed - upon looking it up, none were, in fact, closed. Three additional staff members tried to stop us from leaving to exchange for Euros and finally decided to run our credit card - which they previously said they couldn't accept - without issue. Wait staff was smirking and laughing amongst themselves following this fiasco. We left confused, unsatisfied, and unsettled. Would never recommend.

Yelp
Found this place on yelp which was located close to our hotel in Rome. We were recommended this restaurant also by the hotel manager and made reservations for us as soon as we got settled after check-in. For our first dinner after arriving in Italy the decor was very homely and really authentic. I ordered their specialty carbonara and I was blown away. Leaves an aftertaste of you wanting more. The bacon added was not too salty, just enough! My boyfriend ordered the oxtail in tomato sauce and was so tender almost melted in yr mouth. For dessert we ordered the Tiramasu. Hands down the most amazing Tiramasu ever tasted in my life! This place truly knows how to keep their patrons satisfied. Highly recommend you stop by this establishment if you are around the area. *also voted #7 in spaghetti carbonara in italy*

Yelp
My husband and I ate here on both our first and last nights in Rome. It was recommended by our hotel and was just a short walk away. The food is very good and the ambiance is very nice. However the rude woman that works there ruined the experience for me. The first night we were exhausted from 15 hours of traveling and only had euros is 50€ bills since we had just gotten there from the ATM. She was very exasperated that she had to make change for us (I didn't notice this at the time, but my husband brought it up after our experience on the last night. Otherwise, I would not have suggested we go back again). Tonight, our last night in Rome, we went to pay with a credit card and she snaps "no credit cards!" at us when there was clearly a credit card machine right next to her. My husband explained we only had 15€ cash, but he would run to the ATM and I could stay there and wait. She dramatically rolled her eyes, snatched the credit card, shoved the receipt at us, and muttered something under her breath at us as we left. Nowhere was it posted that they do not accept credit cards and we would have gotten cash before if we had not noticed the credit card machine the first night. I make a point when I travel to not be the "rude American" and learn conversational phrases in the language so I can get by at restaurants and museums and such. If this place hates tourists so much, as it seems they do based on other reviews, maybe they should ask the local hotels to stop recommending them. I know four other couples going to Rome this year and I'll make sure to save Trattoria da Danilo the trouble of having the serve them.

Krystal K.

Yelp
I would give this restaurant 0 stars if I could! I am an Asian female (I felt the maltreatment was possibly due to my race) and was traveling alone. I saw some awesome reviews on some websites and decided to go out of my way (walking, mind you) to try this restaurant out. A waiter came to the door and asked what I needed, and when I asked for a table he turned to an older man who condescendingly pulled his glasses down his nose, looked me up and down, put his glasses back on and rudely said no, we're not going to seat you. You can't eat here. No explanation was given to me whatsoever. Not to mention I had to walk back to my hotel from the shady area that the restaurant is located in. You would think that they would want business, as the restaurant was not full, and would it really have been that much of an inconvenience to serve a party of one?! Not to mention, a couple of Italians I met along the way said that restaurant is overrated. Wish I had known sooner.

Lana B.

Yelp
The carbonara and ravioli with truffle was to die for. Also, get the appetizer sampler dish because everything is delicious and it's a lot of food for the price. Real Italian food and really delicious.

Marie L.

Yelp
Very salty and a bit too rich. The first 3 bites are good, after that, the saltiness and grease was overwhelming. Extremely rude serving staff. We've been to many places in Rome so far, this one definitely had some attitude from the owner; it made the meal more sour.
