Tayēr + Elementary in Old Street blends a casual izakaya vibe with an upscale cocktail experience, showcasing inventive drinks alongside an ever-evolving tasting menu.
"Walk five minutes away from purgatory—or Old Street roundabout, as it’s more commonly known—and you’ll find Tayēr + Elementary, a sceney cocktail bar. The front bar is walk-in-only and has the look of an izakaya built from Apollo 11’s scrap parts, including a pretty nifty Negroni tap and sound system playing European hip hop to bop. It’s perfect for spontaneous midweek things, especially if you like people-watching out the glassy windows and mini martinis. The back bar, open from Thursday to Saturday, is a moodily lit date den with its own separate cocktail list and vaguely illicit, Blade Runner vibe. It’s a very easy place to hole up in until 1am." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, daisy meager

"Monica Berg is a bartender turned industry leader and one half of the team responsible for Old Street’s Tayēr + Elementary. The bar section is walk-in only and the look is part izakaya and part Apollo 11 with added negroni tap. Monica also has her own liqueur, Muyu, and set up Back of House, a digital platform where employees can anonymously flag instances of harassment and discrimination." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, rianne shlebak, sinead cranna
"If you’re after something intimate with drinks that have a kick to them, Tayēr + Elementary will suit you down to a tee. Despite being two minutes from purgatory itself, a.k.a. Old Street roundabout, the sceney cocktail bar manages to screen itself from the horrors outside via unusual drinks and an excellent soundtrack. It’s walk-in only, so come down early in the evening, lean against one of the counters, and get yourself a bergamot margarita or their excellent one-sip martini." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, sinead cranna
"The Sips: 1 (but 1.5 sips is more civilised) The Price: £4 All hail the drink and snack two-for-one. Tayēr + Elementary’s One Sip Martini is served freezing cold, ready mixed in a shot glass direct from the sleek bar’s huge freezers, with a blue cheese-stuffed olive plopped in at the last second. It’s dangerously easy to take the one-sip advice because the drink’s balance of vodka, vermouth, and fino sherry goes down incredibly easily. And at £4, it’s also easy to keep them coming. But pace yourself—Old Street is hard enough to navigate without martini goggles on." - daisy meager
