The best parts about Superfresh Night Market are the vibe, atmosphere, ability to mix food orders from different vendors, and the décor. It's a unique Asian food market concept that occupies the same building that used to house Annex Food Hall (previously a small supermarket). The interior is dark to resemble a night market, with a bustling atmosphere that takes me back to the night food scene in many East Asian cities I've been to. I was impressed by the décor and all the details: old-school bicycle against a wall with graffiti, alleyway decorated with colourful plastic strainers, baskets, and shoes hanging from the rafters, faux telephone lines, lucky cat mini statues, mah jong pieces at the bar counter, and various patterns and symbols that pay tribute to Asian cultures. I liked the neon lights against dark backdrop as well.
At the front of the market is Auntie's Supply, a Los Angeles-style Asian bodega that sells various Asian snacks and condiments. I spent a good 10 minutes here while waiting for the others to arrive, so browsing the store is a good way to kill time if you're waiting for a table. Some of the snacks sold here include many varieties of Pocky, Japanese Kit-Kats in different flavours, instant noodles, Asian-flavoured chips from different countries (including Southeast Asia), and pantry items such as cooking sauces. They even have BBT-flavoured instant oatmeal! There are also cold drinks to go.
Although Superfresh operates like a quasi-food court, you need to wait for staff to assign you to a table and get seated. We came on a Sunday and it was super packed, but we were able to get a table within about 15 minutes.
It operates on a cashless basis. You scan a QR code (specific to your table) to view the menu and order items from your phone... so you don't need to walk from stall to stall to find the menu of each food vendor. You can order different items from all the vendors in the space by starting a tab (all at once). You can add items to your tab on the phone even after orders have arrived.
There are lots of different food and drink options to choose from, so it's great for sharing and trying different things. After we ordered, the dishes came in pretty fast (and it was busy too).
We ordered some Indonesian dishes from Jajan, Lanzhou-style hand-pulled noodles (freshly hand-pulled!), soy tea eggs from Baobird, Korean banchan / small dishes from Ssam Cha (perfect as sides to pair with the other dishes), some dumplings, and a Japanese sando to share from Katsupan. They also have a dessert vendor selling mochins (combination of mochi and muffin), tea-misu (tiramisu but with matcha tea powder), and the famous Basque cheesecake.
Everything that we tried was great, and I liked how efficient the ordering system was. The Mie Goreng from Jajan was flavourful, but a bit oily. The music played consisted of 1990s and 2000s hip-hop and R&B, which we loved. The bustling Asian night market ambience completed the great meal experience. I'd probably be back again to try some of the other food items that we didn't get to try the first time.
