"Though it is just outside the French Quarter, St. Joseph’s Cathedral is one of the most famous landmarks of the colonial era in Hanoi. The neo-Gothic church was modeled after Paris ’s Notre-Dame Cathedral and sits on the west side of Lake Hoan Kiem. The church dates from 1886, making it the oldest church in the capital city. ( Vietnam has a Catholic population of around 4 million people.) After the Viet Minh officially took control of North Vietnam in 1954, following the Geneva Accords, Catholic leaders and institutions were repressed and St. Joseph’s was closed for decades. In 1990, services resumed, and now several masses take place each day, sometimes drawing more worshipers than can fit in the building."

A beautiful and historic architecture, that needs to be seen during the day and night. Its simply beautiful. Remember you need to see it twice, one in the day and the other at night. There are a lot of eateries, coffee joints and pubs nearby. You can see them in the panoramic pic.

Ancient and peaceful. Early in the morning when the sun rises near the church, it exudes the beauty of the church. There are many cafes around here, sitting and watching the poet and the flow of people feel so peaceful!

Such a beautiful church from outside. Visited in May 2022 visitors aren't allowed in at this time. It can get busy but people leave as quick as they come

A nice gothic cathedral, reminding me of the grand Paris Notre Dame Cathdral, but of a smaller scale. The stained glass rose window looks fine in the dusk as the lights create better contrast. I find it looks nicer in the evening before it is completely dark and the lights have turned on. There are aways crowd and rickshaw pullers pestering you for a ride. The plaza is small and cars are parked in it. So there is a dire lack of space. Better to ban all parking and vehicle entry.

Grand and antiquated facade of the church juxtaposed against the low asian shophouses make it seem almost timeless. The cars parked in front of the church almost ruins its beauty. We went during the opening hours but it was still closed to public.

I saw this twice once at night and another time during the day. It’s very beautiful and it’s good to have a tour guide to explain the French colonialist architecture and history. It is a great place to take photos and there are always local and tourists here trying to get the perfect angle.
