"“Wafflerie” sounds like the name of a side character in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, but it’s actually a (kind of pretentious) way of saying “we sell waffles”. Shaky Alibi calls itself a wafflerie. To be fair, though, this Fairfax cafe is serving very good waffles and not much else. They’re the Belgian kind that are sweet enough not to need syrup, but they’re not all sugar either. They come in a bunch of varieties and you can always make a full meal out of their breakfast plates and a coffee, but the portions aren’t overwhelming. When it’s crowded, service tends to be slow - so this is the perfect place to head on a weekday morning." - Amy Clark

"A great gem that most people ignore, either because they go to Starbucks, or because they don't eat sugar. However, this is the perfect place for an afternoon meeting or quiet work session... while enjoying a coffee and a delicious waffle (savory or sweet). Try the ham and cheese or any of the sweet ones." - One Long House

Made it here after driving and walking by this spot for ages! Glad to have stopped by because the waffles were yummy! Did a savory and a sweet version and both were delish. Plus awesome coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice - what’s not to love. Friendly staff and well frequented by their local neighbors it appears. Stop by for them waffles!!

Google
I would say that this is the best homemade waffle in LA!!! I was surprised by the quality of the food and service. I am not a big fan of eating sweet stuff in the morning, but their waffles were super tasty. Their waffles were not too sweet like other spots in the city; on the contrary, their waffles were crunchy and not overly sweet. To me, they were perfect! I do recommend this restaurant to everyone who appreciates homemade foods.

Google
Unfortunately, cannot rate the food because after waiting 45 minutes our orders were yet to be taken and were told it was a 20 minute wait for food to come out. We left for another cafe serving waffles. The table did not get cleared for 30 minutes and was only cleared because I asked for it to be cleared. Customers who arrived 30 minutes after us were served before we were. The table appeared to have never been wiped down and was filthy. Staff behind the counter were less than helpful when asked where we could sit and whether it was table service or ordering at the counter. Was happy to spend our money elsewhere.

One thing I really value is great service! In my opinion, it makes or breaks a food service experience. What I enjoy even more is when there is great service, a flavorful variety of beverages, and, of course, cleanliness is important to me. This place has it all! I had no idea what to expect. From the moment I walked in by myself, I felt comfortable. The sweet young man working today kindly walked me through the options to best fit my dietary needs and preferences. The Chai was absolutely flavorful, and the waffle was hot, fresh, crunchy yet soft, and definitely delicious! They have an organic alternative dairy option as well. Plus, real maple syrup! Score! I will absolutely go back based on my first experience!

To all those living or visiting Los Angeles, PLEASE DO YOURSELVES A FAVOUR and come eat here! The waffles are SPECTACULAR and Jose is one of the nicest hosts we've met! My girlfriend and I first visited and after tasting his waffles (secret Belgian recipe from his grandmother), we fell in love and made it our mission to go back before we left to Vegas and also the day before we flew back home to England! This place is brilliant! Thank you so much for taking care of us and look forward to coming back in August if we move there! See you again soon Jose! 😁

I’m new to the area and stumbled upon Shaky Alibi Thursday around 2 pm (one hour before closing) while on exploratory walkabout and dreaming of coffee. I was pleasantly surprised to find the owner charming and courteous, the service impeccable, and the steaming coffee and sweet waffle delicious. (The special type of sugar is pictured here.) Plus there is a surprise bonus: a small photography gallery wall!

Google
"VOTED BEST WAFFLE IN AMERICA"?! I don't think so. Let's start with the good....our server even though a little slow was friendly and I could tell she was doing her best. It was the food that really disappointed me...actually to a degree where I felt almost ripped off. Here's why: When you go to a waffle place that specialized in waffles...you expect their waffles to be fresh! We waited close to 25 min, but I figured if it's fresh then it's worth the wait. The waffle was very stale, old and crunchy....like it had been sitting out the day before and they just refrigerated it over night and served the next day. Toppings are additional cost..which to be honest, is a bit surprising...considering most people expect something on their waffle (and this place is not cheap). The Poached Eggs Plate was equally disappointing. I almost let out a chuckle when it got served. I've had better eggs and sausage at McDonald's - no seriously! The sausage was hard and too greasy and the eggs were your average tasteless...low quality with no seasoning eggs...if you're going to put paprika on eggs...sprinkle at least a little salt. Voted Best Waffle...No! and unfortunately I won't go back even for ...well...anything. You don't charge prices like this...where everything is additional like it's a steakhouse...and then serve your customers that degree of quality. :(

Google
Got the savory waffle and the s'mores waffle. We got the smoked turkey and the guda on the savory waffle, it was very good. The savory reminded me of a grilled cheese, but there was small bits of carmalized sugar on the bottom side of the waffle. The added sugar was a nice little bit of sweetness, which if you are looking for just a savory taste may not have been the best option. The s'mores waffle had speculoos, dark chocolate and marshmallow cream. The combination did a great number of recreating the s'mores flavor and experience. There was a small bit of burnt marshmallow that just added to the campfire taste.

Yelp
This place has the triangle of excellence in food, its service and its chill ambiance. I'd been meaning to come here for quite some time given their sign which says "Best waffles in America". I haven't tried enough in the county to comment there but I do say that they've got the best waffles in Los Angeles by far. We tried a savory waffle with turkey and Swiss, it was mouthgasms all the way, so too was the strawberry and as I write this I'm waiting for a waffle with a poached again on top. It just arrived and it too is delicious. You want a damn good waffle breakfast then Shaky Alibi is the place. Thanks

Daniel B.

Yelp
Shaky Alibi. Shakier service. Took over 25 minutes to receive my order. Poor barista was left to fend for herself while being overwhelmed by multiple orders . An older gentleman (could have been a worker, could have been the owner) sat by prepping the dough instead of temporarily jumping in. He didn't give a tittle though. Even if prepping dough is essential for day to day operations, he definitely had a couple spare couple of minutes to assure the morning rush goes smoothly

Yelp
Wonderful brunch spot in the mid-city area of Los Angeles. Charming interior done with a modern but warm vibe. The menu features many takes on Belgian style waffles with many healthier options that focus on fruit toppings. Such a great feel to the place and ideal for catching up with friends over an early meal. Lattes were great too. Staff was also helpful in suggesting favorites of frequent patrons.

Yelp
TLDR: I don't have enough experience to say these are the best waffles in the world, but these were pretty damn good! Come try these famous waffles! My partner and I saw the advertisement outside of this restaurant stating they had best/#1 waffles in the world, so we had to try them! When you walk in, we were told to find a seat. We got serviced super fast once sat, and our waiter was very kind! Food only took about 15 minutes to come on a Saturday afternoon. The waffles were delicious!! Don't be fooled by its hardness when cutting, as when you take a bite the texture is just right and as crunchy as waffles should be. Not to mention, the drinks were tasty as well! My partner and I had a great experience and will definitely come back! FOOD: -Traditional liege waffle with sea salt caramel: SO GOOD! If you're a sea salt caramel I highly recommend this! -Big Bleu savory waffle: My partner loved this! The best combo of sweet, salty, and of course savory! DRINKS: -London Fog: Most delicious london fog I've had!! -Macchiato

Yelp
This waffle place is THE SPOT! Seriously can't get enough of this cute local spot with their own special waffle recipe that has won them the title as one of the best in America! I like to get the waffle with eggs, cheddar cheese, and bacon and either a Matcha Latte or a seasonal drink they offer. The customer service is also amazing, Liat is a super sweet! Shop local!!!

Paul R.

Yelp
Some of the best waffles in Los Angeles. The Elvis (banana, peanut butter, bacon) is awesome. Very friendly service.

Zach H.

Yelp
Nice breakfast cafe off Beverly near the grove. They're famous for their waffle creations. I got the sausage egg Gouda one and it was yummy. A little messy to eat with your hands I'd recommend a fork and knife. The mocha latte was pretty good as well. Indoor and some outdoor seating.

Emily J.

Yelp
Very good waffles. Best in America? Not so sure. If you get the plain waffle, ask for no powdered sugar on top. The waffle itself is very sweet. Regular coffee was very good. Also, very strong. In the words of my grandfather "It'll put some hair on your chest" lol.

Megan C.

Yelp
The food was incredibly average for the price. We will not likely be back but the server was friendly and the location close to other shopping. Vegan options available.

Sofia L.

Yelp
I'm not always moved to leave a good yelp review, but considering this place was EMPTY and we enjoyed our food so much, I had to share! We came at 11 on a Thursday and had the place to ourselves. We got the Elvis waffle and the ham waffle and both were delicious. Elvis waffle had a lot going on but it was all scrumptious and we finished both! The service was great, kind, and attentive. Good music playing, quiet, Twas a perfect breakfast for two Midwestern folks who hate the hustle and bustle some brunch places come with. We'll be back!

Lauren P.

Yelp
Delicious coffee and food!!AMAZING customer service. Jose will treat you right! Love coming to this spot.

Marsha G.

Yelp
Nice spot for brunch. Not many options and I wouldn't say best waffles in America. They are traditional Belgian waffles very thick more like a cake. The drinks are amazing. We got the iced lavender pistachio chi tea latte and regular chi. They did not disappoint. I would come back here just for iced lavender tea. We got a traditional waffle with strawberries and a savory waffle with smoked Gouda and bacon. Both tasted delicious. Def worth a try if you love Belgian waffles. The service was great. We got our food quickly. They have an outside option so if you don't want to sit inside. Overall good experience

Ames S.

Yelp
The service was excellent from start to end. The recommendation for The Elvis was perfect! I had an ice mocha and it was delicious! Fresh waffle with honey, bacon, peanut butter, bananas hit the spot. It's a cute little corner spot where dogs are welcome. We're coming back tomorrow for the Sausage Gouda! Thank you for having great service and food!!!

Brandon A.

Yelp
Great place! The waffles & shakes were really good. A bit over priced, but as a once every now and then place it's definitely great. Would definitely come back, the waffles are Belgian so they're thicker and more sugary. Very boutique coffee shop feel, and the service is great. I'd definitely recommend, but be prepared to spend a bit.

Renee D.

Yelp
Huge signs that say Ice Cream .I pulled over and paid 2 dollars to park to get Ice Cream . Guess what ? They only have vanilla ice cream .So what a pain in my arse to park and the signs are a bait and switch lie . My blood sugar is low and I absolutely refuse to give this lieing business a dime.

Danni L.

Yelp
Eh. It's just regular. I don't really have anything good or bad to say. If you want regular, have at it.

Mariano T.

Yelp
Waffles were flakey, slightly crispy, and fresh. My only complaint is that it was too sugary. The powdered sugar + the other crystalized sugar felt like overload. They have a slogan which states, Voted best waffle in America. I'm curious where and when this vote was taken.

Haluk D.

Yelp
Cafe shop needs to pay attention to dead roaches. After my order first roach I saw next to table and I showed person who worked there he had an attitude I guess he doesn't want to clean. Second one the floor and worker keeps ignoring. It was very disgusting experience.

Tina A.

Yelp
First I want to say that Jose was the best. We were here from San Diego and he answered all of our questions and gave great suggestions. I highly recommend the Avocado Waffle for those who love avocado's. Beyond yummy. (Picture posted) The bacon crumbled up was just the right touch. We have nothing like this in San Diego. You all up here in LA far exceed our city.

Liz B.

Yelp
The friendliest staff!! I was sitting at the table outside waiting for my friend and they brought me water and coffee. We were able to order inside and sit outside and they brought our check out later even though it's a to go style cafe. They were very patient when we were ordering and gave great recommendations on their favorites. They don't skip out on the strawberries (like most places) and gave a lot of strawberries! It's off of a some what busy road but you're able to find free street parking on one of the residential side streets. It is a bit pricey for a waffle (compared to making at home) but a great cafe!

Marc ..

Yelp
I've had the waffles in Liege, Belgium, my mother's birthplace, and this is as close to the real thing as you'll get in L.A. The Liege waffle is not to be confused with the more crispy Brussels-style Belgian waffle, which is more like what Americans are used to. The Liege waffle is made from a dough batter. I was initially skeptical, but I learned to like the Liege-style waffle more than the more American-style Brussels. Shaky Alibi is nice because it is an old-style cafe with a counter, and it is not like the pretentious yuppie-magnet places that so mar West L.A. If you sit at the counter, the waffles are made right in front of you in the same way as in Belgium. Great coffee, too. All this at a really lower price than you'd expect.

Kevin K.

Yelp
Freakin' YUM!!!!! My waffle with chicolate hazelnut spread and bananas was delish. Good coffee. Cool peeps, too.

Hazel G.

Yelp
Cup of coffee and a waffle with berries and bananas with whip cream (signature dish)) to go! Coffee was bold yet smooth and waffle could have been perfect. Pearl sugar on the waffle was a bit too sweet for me. Though I have to say...the chewiness of the waffle was quite delightful and so tasty. Customer service was exceptional thanks to Richard! We need more like you around the city.

Nikka C.

Yelp
Their waffles really are delicious. They don't even need syrup because there are like climbs of crystallized sugar on them plus the powder sugar. It's a little pricey but I don't mind supporting small businesses with delicious food and a nice staff. We tried the regular waffle with strawberries and whipped cream - tasty and fresh. We also had the savory waffle with gruyere and ham - it cost more because it's double the waffle! The iced chai tea was also amazing. Super refreshing on a hot day.

Michael C.

Yelp
I was intrigued by the sign outside the door saying "Voted best waffles in LA". But I think they need to redo the voting. The waffle was ok, and not the best in LA. I sat at the bar and watched them make the waffle. They use very sweet cinnamon bun dough for the waffles. If you get a savory waffle, the meat, eggs, and cheese are re heated in a microwave. The waffle was very small and over priced. The avocado and tea were the only thing I ate or drank that was worth the price. Service was good. Barista and server greeted me warmly, and I was served pretty quickly.

Janet A.

Yelp
Try out this place for the first time and it wasn't as great as I expected. The server was friendly but nothing great about the waffle with ham and cheese.

Bruce N.

Yelp
This place pretty well only sells waffles so my expectations were high, anticipating the best ever. Not to happen though. The waffle was hard, not moist, a bit hard to cut.Fortunately the whipped cream and fruit assisted in moisting the waffle

Nela V.

Yelp
You had me at "Best waffles in America"! I drive by here all the time and the sign finally drew me in. I came by on a Saturday morning around 9am and sat outside. I got the Traditional Liege Waffle with strawberries, bananas and blueberries....and Nutella and whoop cream on the side! I can confidently say these are the best waffles I've ever had! The waffles are crunchy and just perfect. No words can describe! So apparently, the waffles here are made with dough instead of batter and the recipe is over 100 years old! Pretty cool and you can really taste the difference. The service was really good as well. Our server was very nice and attentive. It's nice that each outside table is spaced out for social distancing. We were able to find street parking really easily in the morning.

Alexis C.

Yelp
The traditional liege waffles & the waffle sandwich are AMAZING!!!!! Coffee drinks aren't anything special but its worth the stop for the food!! I was skeptical at first for the sausage waffle sandwich but it is the perfect balance of sweet & savory! I have now been there twice & will be back again!

Markus R.

Yelp
This is unpretentious, straightforward waffle place where you can get waffles with some bells and whistles for breakfast. If you're looking for a fancy one, this is not the place. It's not fully crowded when I went which is great. Parking is ample. I just ordered waffle with sausage and Gouda cheese. Loooks promising. Just came from LACMA for the Miyazaki exhibit. This is a close by hole i. A wall breakfast place. Try it!

Cindy C.

Yelp
I went there with a friend before I had my appt at Memoir (next door). I had never had a liege waffle before...I ordered the Cinntastic waffle and it was absolutely delicious. I would definitely come again! The service was great abs our server was friendly. Top notch!

Michiko M.

Yelp
I needed a quick bite to eat after doing an errand for work. Saw this place and wanted to try it out. The lady at the cash register was nice. I ended up ordering the Elvis. She said I could pay after since I was dining in. The waffle was a bit smaller than I was anticipating for the price but the additions were plentiful. It wasn't too sweet which was great. When I went to pay, the same lady asked me if I wanted to tip on the card or what? I always tip something because I've been in the service industry , but didn't like there wasn't an option for me to write in the tip. You had to tell them prior. I ended up giving her some cash but please fix that!! Its always really awkward to tell them in person what they are getting for a tip. What if they didn't want to leave you one?

Emilio M.

Yelp
Great place to enjoy a strong caffeinated drink and perhapses a waffle on the side? Ive been lucky enough to pop in here a few times and kill some time while kiddo finishes her theater classes near by. I find the Shaky Alibi to be a great place to relax with some (as mentioned before) a strong caffeinated drink. Im a fan of their lattes! They're perfect and deliver the perk one needs and especially in the afternoon! As for the waffles...I think this is depends on the day you show up or who is making them. I haven't had a consistently good one for all the times Ive been in here. Granted the 1st one I did have was excellent! It was a taste of heaven. After that however...its been more like "okay I've paid for it, I may as well eat it.". So it seems that something is falling through the cracks when it comes to quality control? But I will say that the coffee and other hot drinks remain consistently great!!! I hope things improve in the waffle dept. Maybe it has? Ill wrap this up by saying that the customer service is great too. Always polite and punctual. Definitely tip worthy. Metered parking all around too.

Navit F.

Yelp
Stopped by on a quaint Saturday morning around 10am before running some errands. I wasn't planning on this but their huge "best waffles in America" sign caught my eye and there was a parking spot right out front so it was obviously meant to be truly the best waffle I've ever had and the strawberries on top were the freshest most delicious berries ever. *chefs effing kiss*!!!! my waitress was super sweet as well and very attentive. 10/10

Tiffany Y.

Yelp
I never realized that a waffle could be life changing...but Shaky Alibi's waffles are and definitely live up to "Voted best in America." Tried both the traditional Liege waffle and the savory Sausage Gouda, everything was awesome! At first, I was hesitant about the sausage gouda but the smoked gouda, sausage, egg, and maple syrup drizzled on top was perfection! Also tried one waffle with chocolate hazelnut spread and strawberries and another with speculoos (crunchy cookie butter) and strawberries - both were excellent, but I think the speculoos was best, transforming the waffle into an even more buttery treat. On top of the amazing food, the staff was super friendly and efficient with the food preparation. There was no wait when I came on a Sunday before 11 and plenty of street parking (though mostly meters that still require payment on Sundays). Highly recommend everyone to check them out!

Tabatha G.

Yelp
We came hungry & the taste of these waffles were amazing! It's like half donut/waffle. We got one sweet & one savory. We enjoyed both , but the savory one so much more that we got another one. & the hot sauce with it makes it even better. Their double espresso is strooong! The only down fall and why I gave 4/5 star is because the portions are small. So you don't leave full off of one waffle. But if go back for a light breakfast or snack.

Kristin N.

Yelp
I had chicken and waffles and coffee, and it was incredible. There were so many flavors, but nothing overpowering. Plus they air fry the boneless chicken, so it's not heavy. The staff is super friendly. It's dog friendly, too! I'll definitely come back with my pups.

Jon M.

Yelp
I saw the sign here claiming best waffles in town so had to try 'em out. The atmosphere is nice, relaxed with friendly staff and chilled music(not loud and annoying). They have a nice long bar and also tables. The coffee was excellent. My waffle main event was the recommended Gouda and sausage. It had large, juicy sausage patties with luscious cheese and was brought out in under 10 minutes. Verdict: An outstanding waffle, one of the best I've had in years making this Cafe a de rigueur visit for waffle fans.

Bella M.

Yelp
This place is Covid compliant and so cute it was my first time eating here and I must say the waffles in the service are exquisite I've never had a waffle taste great. I plan to be back again

Charlene C.

Yelp
I came here with my sister and nephew. It just after lunch time and since we hadn't eaten yet, stopped in here for a snack. They have a great location because we noticed it right away driving by. We had parked across the street (metered parking). We were told to sit anywhere we wanted. There were only 2 other customers inside and we chose the back seating area. They asked if we needed a highchair, but my nephew didn't need one. Our server brought water out to us and a plastic covered cup for my nephew (very thoughtful!). My sister and I both ordered the Traditional Liege Waffle and added strawberries. When the waffles came out, our server brought 2 sets of silverware for us and a third pair of plastic ones for my nephew. Liege waffles (named after a town in Belgium) are made with a thicker batter. They don't give you syrup because the dough already has sugar in it which caramelize and form the hard coating. If you've never had them before, they're not soft or fluffy like the normal waffles we're used to and are more dense. I thought they were pretty good. After we were done, they didn't check up on us so I had to ask someone to bring us our bill; which came out to $16 and some change. Note that if you pay with a credit card, you need to indicate the tip to them ahead of time before they process your card. Overall a pleasant experience.

Maira R.

Yelp
I've driven through this place countless times and am always drawn by the "Voted Best Waffles in America" sign. And every time, I say "I want to go here", but never do... well, it finally happened, guys; and I'm mad I didn't come sooner, because they TRULY ARE America's Best Waffles!!! Staff is super friendly. They were helpful in breaking down the menu. It's basically a build your own, choosing either the sweet or savory route. This time around, my tastebuds demanded savory, but I can't wait to go back for a sweet waffle topped with McConnell's ice cream next time around!! For the savory $9.99, you choose a meat and a cheese. I went with the sausage and swiss gruyere. I also added a poached egg for an additional $2.50. Although on the smaller side, I guarantee you quality. This is in fact the BEST waffle I've ever tried, homemade or otherwise. They specialize and so it well!! They've exceeded all my expectations. I want to go back now!

Sage M.

Yelp
Amazing waffles. Felt like childhood waffles my grandfather used to make. Kind service as well as fresh fruits that were delicious

Roxanna M.

Yelp
Are you craving a delicious waffle? Shaky Alibi is the place to go. I order the Elvis waffle and it was amazing. The waffle was sweet and savory.

Matthew C.

Yelp
My first time here. Nothing beats fresh waffles in the morning. The place doesn't use batter to make waffles, instead they use dough. You know it's HELLA fresh when they use dough! I believe this place would be a great hangout spot with friends. Prices are alright, and the employees were really chill.

Jim S.

Yelp
I love this place. Nice little neighborhood eatery with unique offerings. I'm so glad they survived the pandemic. The food and service are always excellent. You should definitely stop in and check it out.

Shelley C.

Yelp
I have to update my review since the last time I dined here the experience was very different from the last. Let me just say that when this place is crowded for breakfast and appearing to be overstaffed, it is chaos. I came here for breakfast on a weekend at around 10:30am and it just seemed so hectic. There were 3 people working and the place itself is small, so I didn't think it was that bad. But then over time I realized that they must be understaffed because it just wasn't working with just 3 people. It took a while for someone to come around to take our order and even someone bringing us our drinks. It took even LONGER for our food to come out. Had the violet lemonade which is great, and a sweet waffle with speculoos and fruit which is always delicious. However I could do without the BIG chunks of sugar they put into their batter. I get that is how they make it, but it's just overload for me. Also had the sausage gouda waffle which was only okay. I say that because I watched them make the entire dish and to my surprise was made entirely by microwave. Even the scrambled eggs was all microwave. Kind of mediocre in my opinion. Overall, the food isn't too bad if you order right. But don't come here when it's even a little bit crowded because you'll be here for hours.

Shannon M.

Yelp
Drove by this tiny eatery a few times and saw the sign that said best waffles and I was like, yeah, ok, sure... but there is definitely truth to the statement. Street parking was easy enough. Called in my order in advance and picked up quickly. The Liege waffle was perfectly sweet and chewy and delicious and I wanted like 5 more. Just do yourself a favor and stop by this little shop and indulge yourself with something sweet and yummy.

Ernesto R.

Yelp
My wife and I had breakfast there and the food was outstanding and the service was awesome. Keep up the good work.

Oenihss D.

Yelp
I have tried better waffles than the ones served here. Overly too sweet. Service left much to say. We were asked to go pick a table in order for us to get served. They took forever to take our orders and they screwed up our orders when there were only three people at the place. It was me and my friend, plus a guy sitting at another table. The service was non-existent. If I were to give zero stars to this place I would have. There is only one positive which earns them that forced star. That star was earned because of the strong coffee. If you want coffee at a local place then, by all means, check this place out. Other than that, do not expect good service or delicious waffles unless you are into sugar rush type of food.
