Nestled in Jackson Heights, Samudra serves up heavenly South Indian vegetarian dishes, showcasing an impressive array of dosas and spiced curries in a cozy vibe.
"Even the most carnivorous of eaters won't miss the meat here. Samudra’s offers a great variety of satisfying Southern and Northern Indian specialties. They are known for their dosa’s of which they offer over 15 different types. Try both the paper dosa which is thin and crispy and the mysore dosa which is porous with a satisfying chew; both are served with a tasty coconut chutney and sambar. They also have a long list of perfectly spiced curries (okra and roasted eggplant to start), Mumbai chaats (like a flavor party in your mouth), and hard to find rice dishes (tamarind!) to explore. If you get overwhelmed by the options, the hospitable owner Jagdish Shetty (aka Jack) is always on hand to offer recommendations." - Diane Shaw
"This vegetarian southern Indian restaurant is one of only a few serving this cuisine in Jackson Heights. The full range of dosas are available, including sada, rava, and regular. You can’t go wrong with butter masala dosa — the cylindrical wrapper deep brown and crunchy, the filling cumin-laced and shot with other vegetables in addition to spuds. Plenty of appetizers and chaats are available, as are some interesting non-dosa dishes, including rice-based bisi bele bath and pongal." - Robert Sietsema

"If you’re looking for vegan and vegetarian options in the Jackson Heights area, consider Samudra’s menu of Indian food. They’re doing takeout and delivery through a bunch of online platforms, and their giant dosas will make you giddy." - Hannah Albertine, Nikko Duren, Bryan Kim, Arden Shore, Matt Tervooren
"Samudra is an Indian spot that’s completely vegetarian, and many of the dishes on the menu involve fried potatoes and breads. You shouldn’t leave this place without ordering a dosa - each one is giant and costs around $7. It’s not technically on the menu, but ask for a dosa filled with the Gobi Manchurian (spicy cauliflower) entree. It’s worth a trip here on its own." - Hannah Albertine, Bryan Kim
