Travel internationally without leaving San Diego through a truly Mexican experience at Gonzales. We loved this supermarket, found that some items were less expensive than at discount supermarkets. Their assortment of Mexican and to.some extent Latin American products is unlike anything I have seen in other cities in the US including Miami. Their bakery and prepared food department are quite large and have a lot of items available, cakes for every occasion and tons of Mexican food for takeout.

After a doctors appointment around the corner, I stopped by this market again and was reminded just how great it was. The fresh tortillas, the guacamole, and the tamales just to name a few. I got a steaming roasted hatch chili /cheese tamale, and went outside to eat it before I went back into shop. It was fantastic. I was drooling -so good. Worth the $3! I always love exploring the store. I haven’t been in a while but it’s always impressed me. I bought some shrimp really low price- giant shrimp for 5.99 a pound. And a bag of my first ever raw garbanzo beans in pods in the produce department- boy are they good fresh! They have daily specials meals to eat there. I’ve never tried them yet, but they smell divine. I had never seen fresh made tortillas in such variety, blue corn and one with cactus Nopal! They even had sweet tamales. I took a picture of the extensive extensive spice rack to show my friend. So many chilies!!! The meats and cheeses filled another entire area of wonders. The melting Oaxacan cheese is the new mozzarella as far as I’m concerned -I’ve been using it for a couple three weeks now and it’s delicious on anything. I got it before coming to this store, but I saw it here homemade on premises in these fantastic kind of curled slices. I’ll definitely get that next when I run out. I haven’t had a chance to try the meats, and I wasn’t doing a big shop, but I could’ve gone for any of those extensive Beautiful cuts. Amazing store. I was walking so I was limited in what I could carry, but I did buy jalapeños, raw garbanzo’s called guazanas for 2.89 per pound, a bag was $1.27 .44 lb, ancho chili Pasilla 1.29/lb, A sweet? Lime (I haven’t tasted yet) .39. 2 extremely fresh Mexican squash .99/lb 2 were 74 c! And I mentioned shrimp above. Oh and green olives 1.99 and Knorr chick broth..giant for 6.49.. you get the idea… very fun exploring shop while waiting for my prescriptions around corner..I highly recommend this store!

Google
Amazing store that is a true Latin American -such amazing offering. Pics tells everything. Tamales bar, guacamole bar-are you kidding me? The bread rolls are top notch especially when it’s fresh from the oven.

Thanh Le

Google
Tacos were $1.99/each. The 1 lb burrito was $8.99 or on Wednesday $9.99 with a drink. Probably the best food value in San Diego.

Google
Favorite market in San Diego, great for everything you need for a beach BBQ or a party at home! Must try the amazing Chicharron and carnitas ready to go all day. Variety of cuts of meat, poultry and pork... Will not be disappointed!!

Manuel Huezo

Google
The product looked fresh but there was poor customer service. Went to their food court Cocina Doña Tina and it was very bad organized and with a very few customers to place an order was almost impossible. No cashier and only one or two employees handling preparing the food and also taking orders. When we finally were taken care we were told most of the items we wanted to order were ran out. However we were able to buy refreshments and they were good!

Zakhar Smirnov

Google
Slowest market in the entire world! 10 cashier registers and only two or 3 are working during peak hours. Staff are lazy and slow as snails. Lots of produce are overpriced. Quality of produce are not the best. They try to “look” like organic market but in fact most of the fruits and vegies are gmo. Pastries & cakes are fake. And only food bar is worth coming here.

Melanie Villagomez

Google
Great products and customer service at the store, but the kitchen staff needs to improve their attitude and attention to detail; the food is quite good, though.

Leslie G.

Yelp
Ordered 3 pounds of marinaded pollo and 3 pounds of adobada to cook at home for a reunion. While we were cooking it, we found worms in the pork. We ended up tossing the pork, because there were so many worms and we didn't want to get sick. We did cook the chicken, and some people who chanced it said it was good. There's cartilage in the chicken, but after seeing the worms, I could not eat it. I was too scared. I will say, I have eaten here before and I didn't have a problem, but I also didn't inspect my food like my friend did who was cooking the meat. I would never eat here again.

Yelp
What area of San Diego has the many art pieces that are about the neighborhood? For the one store that had the connection to the many bakery restaurant items the Northgate Market for one place that does all their own cooking and baking . Many of the stores that I have found are the many products that are produced by the market when you have a market that bakes in house better the products. Visiting the Vario Logan area it has one of the many historical buildings for the Vario you have many paintings that have been placed through the block by local artists . For the Northgate market is one of the many that are in the Vario you can buy many products and those that are freshly baked Northfarebis one of the many markets you can live the times of the 60s 70s 80s. Going to the store was one that I found the many products for the dishes and the cooking of the manuly dishes the many custo.ees buying cuts of meat and dry goods to the freshly made baked goods which are some of the best . With the many people that work at Northgate they can help you gettings down from the top shelves most people can't reach top shelves . Asking about the baked goods the store can help you with the meaning of the products the great flavors they have freshly baked items are the best for grocery stores . Visiting and shopping at Northgate the many Isles they have for great bargains finding a great grocery store that makes baked goods you can have a better taste of what Northgate is all about . Being s Yelp Elite Reviewer the many places over the years I have found they deal with distributors for a place that makes fresh much more great tasting and customer service above other stores of the City and the state .

Yelp
I'm recently back in San Diego for work and brought some co-workers here for lunch telling them how good their food is. It did not disappoint. It's a grocery store with a restaurant inside. So, it can get kind of loud, but that's not an issue. Matter of fact he only issue they had was no lengua tacos lol. So, I ordered 2 carnitas and one carne asada combo, which included rice and beans. Puls a drink all for just over $13. A great deal. Uws, they were street tacos, but it was still a very good portion. So much so that you can split them and make 6 tacos. Rice and beans were also tasty enough. .y friends e joyed what they ordered, also. A chicken burrito, 6 carne asada tacos, and a quesadilla. We all left full and satisfied. If you haven't been, give it a go.

Fernando R.

Yelp
It's a big store that sells all kinds of great food! You can find all kinds of food varieties here when grocery shopping! I highly recommend this place!

Daniella S.

Yelp
We love coming here! We have tried the ceviche , salsas , guacamole and aqua frescas. It's perfect to pick up for a party or having family over for lunch. Just take a number but sometimes there isn't a wait. Staff is always super friendly!

Shawn T.

Yelp
tons of fresh produce... seems like they have more than 1cashier.. they meat DEPT... is. check my photo. do visit.

Fred T.

Yelp
We did a day trip to San Diego, specifically the Barrio Logan community and came to Northgate for lunch. Since we know about them from their locations in Los Angeles, their take-out or more authentic Mexican offerings are pretty good. We ordered a couple of platters that were ok. The issue why this is 3 stars instead of 4 or 5 is because the lady serving us was busy chit-chatting or paying our order very little attention. Anyway, Northgate is full service and their take-out normally is very good but this trip was a bit disappointing.

Michael B.

Yelp
It's a coin toss if you're going to get a friendly greeting or people watching the clock and waiting for their shift to end. But when you get the friendly ones, you could spend an additional 10 minutes just talking life with them which I appreciate. I do think it's a bit pricey and so I find it hard to go there when there's several carniceria near me for the same-ish price. The food is pretty decent. Solid selection. I always find what I need there. Which is a plus. It's always stocked Which is a plus. It's part of the neighborhood and community so you see some people on the trolly or barbershop which is a plus. The champurrado by midday which is usually when I want it... Is typically already gone or looks like it's been sitting there for a long time without being stirred. Anyways would rather have northgate here and have that homey feeling than another chain.

Jade C.

Yelp
Always great hot food selection and wonderful service! It's a very clean and well organized market.

John L.

Yelp
I'm here right now Wednesday 21st 2024, store look dirty everywhere and empty and prices really high. Idk if this is the place to shop it was at one point idk about now! I saw Mold in a cooler where the product was display on. Really dirty place.

Jane A.

Yelp
WHEN IN NEED OF MEXICAN GOODS ... this be the store to hit up. Perfectly nested in a historic Hispanic neighborhood where there is new development. - ceviche - tamales - champurrado - conchas I love their tamales. Hot and ready to eat! Many flavors: chicken, beef, cheese, corn, sweet. And especially this time of the year they serve Mexican champurrado. Who knew tamales and champurrado go hand-in-hand during the Christmas season. So I've taken upon myself to have both through the month of December! Until the next review...

Nicole M.

Yelp
I was looking for a fonda like dining place, came across this location, & it is a 2/10 for service, the girl that took my order was rude & very overbearing, I was not done ordering & she cut me off, & to top it off didn't listen nor pay attention when I was ordering & just rang me up for 2 of the INCORRECT items, unacceptable.

Pearl T.

Yelp
I only put one star because you have to put a start to be able to post a review, but in reality I would not have gave the nothing the cashier on the food court on 6/18/24 was very unprofessional i asked her for some forks and she literally threw them on tue counter . After she did the same thing with our food .. I use to love going here for groceries but this store has gone down hill in many areas.. the cleanest is definitely not there no more.. i don't think i will go back just because of the unpleasant experience...

Laureen O.

Yelp
I have been to two of these markets. Barrio Logan location is small. The one on 43rd street is much larger and has better cooked food. I came to buy ingredients for a pozole I was making. I was so pleased with all the produce and ingredients. I will definitely come back.

Karen L.

Yelp
Mexican supermarket that has a huge variety of Hispanic items. Some are priced well, and others are overpriced. The hot food section has a good selection, and very good prices. It is a clean store.

Steven H.

Yelp
Clean and organized supermarket but kind of overpriced on a lot of things. Service was great at checkout.

andres h.

Yelp
Got a pound of Ceviche de Nayarit, it was so delicious and good spicy, I couldn't stop! Sliced up some avocado over it and corn chips, really good.

Lahela P.

Yelp
This is for the Food Court Only On February 17th I placed an order for 3 lbs pollo asado, 3 lbs carne asada which came with 4 rice, 4 beans, 1 pkg tortilla and 1 pkg of salsa. I had requested to pick it up at 10:30am the next day. So on February 18th, my co-worker and I went in to pick up our order. This order was for a party at work. This wasn't the first time we had ordered food from here. We received a text from our doctors asking if we could order a bit more food, so upon arrival, we asked if we could add 5 lbs of carnitas to our order, but were told no. If they accommodated us, they would not have any carnitas to serve the rest of their customers for the rest of the day. Fine. But no reason to give us attitude about it. The pollo asado we normally receive is quality chicken breast. This time we received shredded whole chicken that had pieces of bone, skin, and veins in it. It was nasty. How embarrassing to serve such sub par food at a celebration. Our normal service and the quality of food from here is usually GREAT! That is why we have continually purchased food from here. However, after this last experience, no more. The service we received was awful. The woman behind the counter made us feel like we were inconveniencing her, like she had better things to do.

Shalini G.

Yelp
Most recent visit was this week during the crazy apocalyptic times... if you want some amazing takeout food and be able to grab the groceries you need without the chaos...well this is the place to come. our to go meal included meat/beans/rice/salsa/tortillas....and added a pound of carnitas...the entire meal was under $40 (and fed a family of 4 with ample leftovers for a second meal). Not only is this crazy affordable but also delicious. I like to go out for taco tuesday and margaritas on occasion, but that's for social purposes. If my family wants Mexican food, this is where I stop to bring food home. great service clean store ample parking friendly employees

Michele B.

Yelp
With the cost of buying a $10 burrito from a taco shop you could buy the ingredients for a portion of the price and make a few at that. I love perusing the aisles for new finds. If you don't feel like cooking you can find a bunch of your Mexican favorite ready may to go. We made chicken tinga for last nights get together with friends and it was absolutely delicious. They have a good number of locations so find one nearest to you.

angela l.

Yelp
We stopped by after visiting the nearby Chicano Park to see what to get and bought a fried whole tilapia fish ($4.99), a whole rotisserie chicken ($8.99) plus papayas, avocados, Roma tomatoes, broccoli, onions, garlic, cilantro....all the regular grocery items which were all good quality and cheaper than what we usually pay for. If I ever come back to this neighborhood, I'll definitely come back...maybe have lunch in too!

Heidi F.

Yelp
are you kidding me? the guacamole, the ceviche, all the items at Cocina Dona Tina - caldo, chicken mole, anything you want...the drinks...

Yesenia N.

Yelp
Great location I prefer over others because of the variety of options available at affordable price. I love their random selection special of vegetables or fruits in bags for $1.29ea. They also sell really delicious peanuts in these plastic containers their super delicious and great quality of peanuts. The staff here are efficient and friendly always keeping the lines running smoothly. Highly recommended.

Munch T.

Yelp
In the mood for Mexican food? @northgatemarket has you covered! We ordered some birria and cicharon tacos, a quesadilla, and a watermelon Agua fresca. This is a really good place to get some food and you can get all your grocery shopping before or after you visit!

Carvill V.

Yelp
Variety cuts of meat unlike other supermarkets at good prices. Freshly made tortillas and decent produce, not perfect but the best price.

Chef Masa H.

Yelp
Please check what you're buyin! Bought chicken taco meat today. 20 lbs. The gal bagged it behind the counter. It was rancid. Please take the time to smell the product before they wrap it up. Don't get me wrong: they gave us credit. Greatly appreciate. But it should've never been sold in the 1st place. The company was great, but the employee should not work there if she does not know the difference between good and bad chicken.

Tony M.

Yelp
I frequent Northgate often for bakery goods and groceries. Today had lunch to go from them and was delicious! Carne asada torta fully loaded With a pineapple/spinach agua fresca I recommend this market to all.

Hiral S.

Yelp
Stopped at Northgate today after hearing great things from my colleagues and this store was amazing. Got fresh tamales, ceviche, salsa and tortillas. Even the produce was great! Such a feast and service was great too!

Isa U.

Yelp
The workers are friendly, the hot foods are great ! The bakery old man was using his bare hands no gloves to mix something. Please beware of the cakes. I found a hard sharp clear piece of plastic in a cake I bought so please don't smash the bday persons face in it. The already heated tamales are bomb !

Brad B.

Yelp
Northgate is no longer my local market but when in a recent pinch, a side effect of the hoarders making life difficult for the rest of us, I was able to find a few things here that were not available elsewhere. Pasta was on the shelf, not in excess but existent. I grabbed three boxes and left a bunch on the shelf. Tuna was also available here, once again, not in excess but limited on the shelf. The meat selection is also in healthy supply in comparison to the other stores around town. Per usual, Northgate may not carry your favorite brand but you may be able to find what you need if you aren't concerned by Charlie Tuna sitting on the shelf as Carlos Atun. I, for one, have no problem with that.

Sabrina T.

Yelp
Covid-19 Finally a grocery store that has groceries! I don't know how lucky/unlucky anyone else has been but my local Vons, Sprouts, and Ralph's are all cleaned out thanks to all those panic shoppers. So you may wait in a "social distancing" line while the guardians of the door wipe down your cart but I promise there will be sustenance once you enter. I bought my usual stash of tortillas along with good ol' cheap Mexican market produce. I was very pleased to see garlic since people in my neck of the woods are probably munching them down like medicinal candy. Unfortunately the toilet paper situation is still a thing here too but at least you'll find bacon and a decent amount of protein staples.

cxmarqu m.

Yelp
It's been about 10 years since I was cheated out of $20 cashback at the food counter. Today I decided to forgive and forget, and give them another try. They put bone and hooves in my Menudo with tons of hominy! And the employee said she had NO oregano for my Menudo. Isn't Menudo accompanied with Oregano??? What a poor Value for your money..... poor taste and only a handful of Menudo/beef product, the rest bone, hooves, and hominy. Never have had hooves in my Menudo and always have had Oregano to accompany my Menudo. This is a Mexican store is it not? You don't have Oregano in your spices aisle? Food clerk says she will get in trouble if she goes to the spices aisle to get the Oregano. What a way to treat your customers right! I had to return the whatever it was they served me... at one point I thought the manager was going to insist hooves are part of the Menudo dish, but when she saw the bone the look on her face was of embarrassment. She kindly returned my money without another word. I will never step foot in any of their stores for as long as I live.

Christina R.

Yelp
Ok this is another place we have to stop at every time we come to San Diego. This place is an absolute must! The have an awesome variety of pan dulce, produce, meats, and prepared foods. We come here quarterly from Las Vegas to get topo chico water imported from Mexico. I literally buy out the large cases from the store every time we come. The staff is very helpful and friendly about it. One guy even remembers me and asks me if I came for the water. The ceviche section is killer. We always get some for that night's dinner along with the house fried tortilla chips and chiccaron. These are the best! This time we came to the store and there was agua fresca being sold. I got a tamarind one and it was delicious. We will definitely be back to this market every time we come to SD!

Bradly P.

Yelp
Awesome Hispanic, Mexican grocery store located in the heart of Bario Logan! I usually come here for the fresh fruit and veggies and herbs where I dont have to make the drive to the local Asian store when Northgate is right down the street. This Market is whipping up some of the best local produce and different meats and seafood you could ask for! The veggies and fruit are stocked to the max with the different amount of variety's. They have a bakery where they bake some of the freshest French Bread and have quite a deal on them. The cakes are beautifully presented in the show case for your next Birthday or celebration and the doughnuts are looking fresher than ever! I really enjoy the to-go restaurant inside where you can get the best to-go food for a decent price! They have tamales for purchase that are refrigerated and fresh guac and salsas. The beer selection is great while the liquor selection is even better! They sell horchata already made and ready to drink as well as other specialty drinks. I usually come here to find something new to try and devour while I learn more and more about Hispanic foods. The store is super clean and the employees are nice and friendly and greet you with a warm welcome every time I come here . Overall come here for your next fiesta where you can purchase pre made seasoned carne asada meats for your next taco Tuesday or any other inspired Hispanic dishes where you wont be disappointed!

Gustavo D.

Yelp
A good place for both Hispanic and non-Hispanic groceries. Prices tend to be more reasonable than nearby Downtown. Produce was pretty good when I used to visit a few years ago - Sprouts would be the competition at their price-point, while places like Albertsons would be no-go's for produce because of price.

David W.

Yelp
One of my favorite specialized markets around SD. I live downtown and really enjoy the barrio logan location. The ready made foods to left of entrance excellent. My favs: VARIOUS fresh ceviches, carne de res soup, broiled chicken, horchata drinks, guacamole , etc - etc. After picking something here, check out the beer cooler and then the amazing fresh meat/ poultry and fish counter on back wall. Produce section terrific too, with many south of the border specialties.

Mira P.

Yelp
Big Latin Market in go figure ...a predominately Latino neighborhood but Those who love a cultural and ethic food experience can also be found shopping here. The produce is not so cheap and there are better prices around town. Where they win is the "ceviche" selection! They have over 6 varieties of ceviche, note they are mainly only shrimp based. There were a couple that had actual fish and no shrimp. So I hope you don't have allergies to shrimp. The also have a tamale bar, around 5 different types and of course they have a vegetarian option because we are in the heart of veggies lover land. The only thing is that they don't list the ingredients and there is no nutrition label to be found. I had to pass since I'm Almost 99% sure they are made with lard... after all that's what makes you eating more Mexican food. They also offer fresh breads and sweet breads too, decadent pastries to load you up on calories. They offer a wide selection of meats, poultry and fish. They also offer grab and cook at home that has all the ingredients and makes cooking simple and fun. Come visit this market and be ready to explore all the Mexican varieties they offer... now only if they offered Cuban coffee here...

Advisor E.

Yelp
Cleanest public restroom in Barrio Logan/downtown San Diego. I then stopped by to purchase chilis relleno and a torta! No cooking tonight.

Ann H.

Yelp
Great market, especially if you are looking for ingredients useful in Mexican or central American recipes. And they have the best ever fresh deli! I also appreciate their selection of central American foods and products. I wish it were closer!

David C.

Yelp
I would give this 0 stars if I could. Bought a piece of chocolate cake one day took it home and it had MOLD. No biggie. It was 2.99$ so I just thought nothing of it and threw it away. Today I came in to buy a guacamole salsa. It had "packaged on 27 March date on it. It was rancid tasting! Two times? Will not be coming here ever again. Le daría 0 estrellas si pudiera. Compre un pedazo de pastel de chocolate un día y tenia mojo! Que asco! No le di importancia y lo tiré pues nadamos costó 2.99$ Hoy fui a comprar salsa de guacamole que tenía fecha de empacamiento "27 Marzo." Estaba echada a perder! La regrese. Dos veces que esta su producto hechado a perder? NUNCA VUELVO A REGRESAR! Además su pan está mosqueado!!!!

Geoff L.

Yelp
I was looking over my page and realized that I don't have a review for this place yet...odd... I digress I come here as a treat every now and then. My wife met me downtown on my birthday and I took her here for lunch, for example. It's casual, simple, convenient, and delicious. Their food bar is plentiful and they have just about every Mexican delicacy you can imagine. I usually get the carnitas plate, but the lengua is amazing, the ribs are delicious, the chicken (mole?) is incredible. To be honest, I only come here for lunch, so I haven't tried their grocery section, but if it's as plentiful as their food bar, I'd say they're doing alright. If you're in the Barrio, this is an amazing choice, and it's a little different from the norm, and that's always cool. Make sure you grab some cilantro, onion and lime from the salsa bar and you're set. Ok, it's your turn now. Time to go get some food.

David B.

Yelp
I'm sure they'd tell you this place is fresh and clean, but I beg to differ. Look at the fruit and cockroaches hanging out waiting to much after hours but I guess cockroaches are better than the poisonous chemical insecticide they would spray into the store, which means into your food! The fruit could be a lot better, I won't even mention the food in the deli area because it doesn't even look like real food . No organic selection or concerns about health or vegetarian alternatives here which I understand is cultural but only in perpetuating the Stereotype and oppression of not having choices or access to health with limited finances. Two stars because the staff is really wonderful and helpful.

Jack M.

Yelp
I stopped in at this market after having breakfast to pick up some avocados and tortilla chips. The Haas avocados happen to be on sale, two for .99 cents, so I picked up two descent looking ones. I also picked a a large bag of their Northgate Chips Caseros for $2 and some change. (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/northgate-market-gonzalez-san-diego?select=TgkM6DRo2TItipkU49Hujg#j0pe-xuYxTone4c6EuIovg) The were on the thicker side than most and were quite good with their sprinkling of salt. The store was well organized, clean, had that warehouse appeal with its high open ceiling and simple decor. (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/northgate-market-gonzalez-san-diego?select=TgkM6DRo2TItipkU49Hujg#TgkM6DRo2TItipkU49Hujg) The girl at the produce sections was very nice and helpful when I asked questions regarding the avocados, and the young lady at the register was equally pleasant and polite. This location, like most, has a tortilleria making fresh tortillas daily, and a variety of hot food specialties. No doubt this place caters to the local community, but don't let that stop you from visiting. The store has plenty to offer for all, including pinatas, if you need one..

Pablo P.

Yelp
They make the French rolls and corn cakes in San Diego. The only complaint would be they occasionally sell out. Go before 10am or after 4. They generally bake twice a day.

Sal H.

Yelp
I've been a regular customer since they opened up basically, we always get most of out groceries there, never had a major problem (except couple cashiers a little rude sometimes ) but today dice to get our shrimp here , surprisingly opened up the bag once I got home and I got the smell (shrimp were bad) lesson learned, next time we get our seafood at fish market place instead.

Noelani M.

Yelp
Convenient location off the I-5 freeway. Ample free off street parking. Reasonably priced produce with lots of options. The bakery smells amazing as you make your way towards the meat counter located in the back of the market. As you approach the counter you will come across a free standing ticket machine (lift the top pull a number) and listen for your number to be called. I unfortunately ended up with a worker who did not speak English resulting in lots of pointing, repeating, and eventually having to request assistance from a nearby customer. Highly recommend their fresh tortillas (you could literally see the steam in the bag), guacamole bar (a bit on the pricey end but well worth it), and pico de gallo.

Melissa H.

Yelp
Was sooo looking fwd to some takeout tonight after a loooonngg day at work and wish I didn't find a nasty piece of crunchy plastic in my beef barbacoa. Ugh. Loved this place before this little gift. Awesome selection of Mexican groceries, baked goods, ceviche, and prepared foods and everyone is friendly enough. I guess finding not so appetizing stuff in your food can happen...just wish it wasn't me:(

Mark G.

Yelp
I had a salad today from their kitchen. It was the biggest disappointment from food I've ever had from this place. The salad had absolutely no flavor and the meat was poorly prepared. It was a waste of time, I ended up ordering food somewhere else after having spent my money at their kitchen. I'm giving two stars because my previous experiences with their catering for my employees has been positive. Unfortunate.

Yelp
Love this market! They have amazing deals on fresh veggies, fruit and a full meat selection. I stocked up on onions at 50 cents per pounds, fresh jalapeños and organic cilantro. They also have fresh masa for tortillas and tamales here too. Great spot situated right next to downtown
