5 foodie spots chef Pamelia Chia is dying to visit when she's back in Singapore - SilverKris

"A beloved zi char joint favored for no-frills communal dining, simple yet well-balanced condiments and hearty dishes; highlights include a coarse chilli condiment of green and red chillies with garlic and particularly memorable champagne ribs, making it a comfortable spot for good food, beer and family gatherings — it’s even been considered as a wedding venue for its charm." - Alexandra Karplus

Traditional zhecar with quite a quality food. We had a great meal at Por Keng Eating House 1996. The standout dish for us was the Champagne Short Pork Ribs. The pork was tender, nicely glazed, and had a good balance of sweetness and aroma that made every bite enjoyable. We also tried several other dishes, and everything came out flavorful and served hot. Portions were reasonable for sharing, and the prices felt fair for the quality. Service was prompt and straightforward. The staff checked in on us and made sure dishes came out in a smooth flow. The place has that classic local zi char vibe, perfect for a casual meal with family or friends. Overall it was a satisfying dining experience and worth returning for those delicious pork ribs alone. If you are around the area and craving a hearty meal, Por Keng Eating House 1996 is definitely a good choice.

How lucky to find this restaurant! The foods are all fresh and very well cooked, not salty at all! That’s amazing! Very healthy I believe. Come in group to try different tastes. The champagne ribs with rice are highly recommended, we also try the fried noodle and Hongkong steam fish, all are very good. Better come at around 6 pm for dinner as at 7 pm, it’s totally full.

The champagne short ribs were definitely the highlight of the dinner – super tender and full of flavor. The dofu tasted like the homemade kind, and the bullfrog herbal soup was also good. Plus, the prices are very reasonable!

Food is good. Went at weekday lunch time and it was quite empty The champagne ribs is tasty but abit too fat. The homemade beancurd texture is really soft and nice. The veg is good and the 酸辣汤 is delicious. My friends particularly enjoyed the Orh bee which they say is not too sweet and the portion for one is huge!

Food came so fast, and we sat outside so the vibes were unique and charming. Everything was delicious, but the standouts for me are the cereal prawn, signature tofu (PLS ORDER THIS so addictive) and the champagne pork. The crispy skin chicken meat was a little dry and under-seasoned/marinated in my opinion.

Love the food. Taste was very good. Beef hor fun has good wok hey. Both beef & venison were tender & flavourful. The yam ring was full of real yam & the meat was tender too. Highlight was the braised sea cucumber & homemade tofu. Thick slices of collagen & silky smooth tofu in a rich sauce - heavenly !

Tried Por Kee Seafood recently and the experience was quite mixed. We waited about 40 minutes for our chili crab to arrive, and unfortunately, the crab was overcooked and a bit disappointing. Service was lacking too — staff weren’t very attentive, and we had to repeatedly ask for our tea to be refilled. Eventually, one of us simply went ahead and did it myself after being told to wait more than 5 times. On the bright side, the qing long vegetable was well-executed — flavourful without being too salty. The tofu dish was interesting and stood out from the usual fare. However, the salted egg chicken was average at best, with too much flour and not enough meat texture. Cereal prawn was pretty decent as well. Fresh and fragrant. The restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating, which is nice, though parking is quite limited. Toilet was clean and surprisingly spacious, which isn’t always the case at older-style eateries. Overall, Por Kee has a few strong dishes, but the long wait times and service issues made the meal less enjoyable than it could have been. Would return only if service improves.

Lovely zi char. Food tasted good and service was quick. We went around 8.30pm on a weekday and the crowd was thinning out already. Sat outdoors, which is very chill. Ordered Cereal Prawns, Black Bean Horfun, Champagne Pork Ribs and Sambal Sweet Potato Leaves Food tasted real good. Best were the Horfun and Pork Ribs. A bit pricier than the neighbourhood zi char but you always get good quality here.
