The game of bowling is old. I'm talking old enough that your toothless grandpa with his broken hearing aids is a baby in comparison. How old? Crude forms of bowling date back to 3200 B.C. Bowling has evolved since "before Christ", however, and can be played on amateur or professional levels, for charity or in private lanes of a rich celebrity's mansion, or in a pseudo nightclub environment with beers and lasers. If you're seeking a foray into the updated world of bowling though; then Pickwick ISN'T for you. Who IS Pickwick Bowl for? Read on...
Pickwick Bowl is located in the Pickwick Gardens complex which features an ice skating rink, banquet halls for weddings, actual gardens, and the bowling lanes. Located across the street from the cute horses trotting-it-up at the LA Equestrian Center; Pickwick has free parking and old-school signage to welcome bowlers.
This "old-school" theme continues when you walk into Pickwick. Pickwick feels like a flashback to the 80s. Not only it is tiny with a strip of only 24 lanes and smashed together ball areas; but the color scheme, furniture, carpets, etc seemingly have never even debated a remodel. The scoring pads (although computerized) don't even have a chair! Yes, Pickwick DOES have a cheesy bowling alley lounge, soda/vending machines, lockers, a snack bar, and an arcade (using this term lightly as the arcade features only about 5 games and they are lame to boot); but each is somewhat dirty and scraggly in appearance. Pickwick is certainly only recommended for those seeking nostalgia... Others will be running out of the place!
Wondering how your wallet will fare for a night of knocking down pins? Prices vary day by day and hour by hour. Generally, before 7 pm games range from $3.50-$4.75 with shoe rental averaging $3.75. This increases when "cosmic bowling" and evening hours set in. If you aren't looking to bowl with high-schoolers, the latest time to start your game on the weekends is 6pm as the kiddos trickle in at 6:30. Pickwick does have special events, happy hour prices, morning discounts, and a "TGI Thursday" promo where games are as low as $1! Basically, performing a little research will help save a little moolah.
The lanes are old, as well. The balls aren't in the best shape and are overly greasy while sporting "bruises". The shoes are widened and gross, and the chairs are uncomfortable. Again, don't expect a Lucky Strikes or Pinz experience at Pickwick.
Service wasn't anything to remark about. The employees (aside from the lounge) are teenagers who clearly would rather be with their friends than working. No small talk and no smiles, but they do the job. I can't remark on the food at the snack bar as I haven't tried it (assuming it crap, though) but they do have vegetarian options which is great.
Long story short: if you are seeking a throw-back bowling experience and aren't worried about a shappy alley, then Pickwick is great. If you are seeking a bowling extravaganza, then you will be highly disappointed. However, for what it is, Pickwick is great: a place for a quick bowling game which will bring you back to your youth of "bowling birthday parties". Old or not, bowling can still bring smiles to your face. Just make sure to bring extra socks because the shoes are gross.
Tip: female shoes appear to run a size larger (ie. I wear an 8.5 and needed a 7.5)
