"Dante's Tomb Standing in the Piazza Santa Croce, a statue of Dante looms over the square from the corner. Florence , where Durante degli Alighieri's journey through hell, purgatory, and paradise was to begin but not end. In 1829 a tomb was built for him in the Basilica of Santa Croce—the largest Franciscan church in the world. The tomb has remained empty ever since as Dante's body lies in Ravenna. Yelp
Named after the fameous churce at the end of the piazza, the Basilica of Santa Croce, this is a fun open air area in Florence. The piazza is all paved, however, there is usually a famers market (mostly prepared goods vs produce), and the people watching can be pretty spectacular. It was a easy 15 second walk from my apartment, and the adjacent Taxi stand made getting to the airport a breeze. There are no services or greenery, but the steps of the church can be used as a nice place to sit. It is dotted by a large number of restaurants, leather shops, and gelato places. Its a cool place to simply stop and take a breather and the church is worth a visit as it houses the remains of many famous Italian's and the interior is quite nice as well

Yelp
Florence is a city of plazas like this one. It takes its name from the Basilica of Santa Croce that overlooks the square from the southeast side. It is a large and open plaza, much less crowded than Piazza Santa Maria Novella and Piazza della Repubblica. The main buildings of the piazza include the Basilica of Santa Croce (burial place of Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Enrico Fermi and Galileo), the 15th century Palazzo Cocchi-Serristori, and the 17th century Palazzo dell'Antella. We were here to start our food tour and of course there are restaurants and cafes in the plaza. Enjoy! [Review 17028 overall - 227 in Italy - 544 of 2022.]

Yelp
I can see why Florence was the home of so many world famous artists. I did kind of confuse this church from the exterior to San Giovanni, but it's more of an isolated church and stands alone. It shares some similar detailing on the exterior as San Giovanni. I can see that the attention to detail on this church as well as San Giovanni was of an intricate and detailed manner. Florence is the first city I have ever seen that so much effort in the smallest of detail of an exterior of a building was made. It's as if the outside structure itself was a canvas for adding the personality and detail of the all that went into this structure. It's beautiful.

Yelp
Nice, open piazza that fronts the Basilica Santa Croce. We stopped here for lunch after visiting the Basilica, on a hot September afternoon. The curb and concrete benches on one side were still blissfully in shade at the time, so that's where everyone congregated! We were lucky to score a small piece of shade for a quick bite to eat. Would have like to see the flood high water markers, but were unaware of them.

Yelp
This piazza (plaza) is quite expansive and far less crowded than the Piazza del Duomo. Here you can eat lunch in relative peace while taking in the beauty of Santa Croce Basilica's marble facade, which matches the multi-colored marble exteriors of Santa Maria del Fiore (Florence Cathedral).

Yelp
Beautiful piazza. It is usually bustling with tourists but great place to relax eat lunch and people watch. We stayed in the square and really enjoyed our stay. A lot of good restaurants and cafes around this area too. Would definitely recommend.

Yelp
"There are no shelters, not even hopes Everywhere poop is dancing in roads And when dragged by the rapid wave You find yourself at Saint Croce's base" Extract from "the Flood" by R.Marasco ~ Storyteller of Florence Once you learn the true spirit of Florentines you can never go back! Here in Santa Croce, Sthendal syndrom was firstly recognized, here dozens of enlightened artists and poets rest their flesh. There's a plate indicating the height that river Arno's water reached in 1966 and so many stories behind this square. Get yourself lost in them and grab a guide, there's so much to discover!

Yelp
This is a great piazza near the river in Florence. From what it seamed, it is not as well known as many of the others. There are many shops and restaurants around the square, with street performers doing a variety of things (my favorite was the music). The best part about the piazza was the beasilica, the largest Franciscan church in the world. It has multiple chapels within it which are eloquently decorated. It houses art and It is the burial place of Michelangelo Buonarroti, Niccolò Machiavelli, Enrico Fermi, Galileo Galilei, Ugo Foscolo, Guglielmo Marconi, Luigi Cherubini, Leon Battista Alberti, Vittorio Alfieri, Gioacchino Rossini, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Lorenzo Bartolini, Pier Antonio Micheli, Bartolomeo Cristofori, Giovanni Gentile - it was incredible to visit. If you are in the piazza, visit the beasilica..you will not be disappointed!

Yelp
Beautiful piazza. Absolutely breath taking and stunning. Great market place for shopping local goods and awesome places to eat. Really enjoyed the museum. Da paura!

Yelp
If you looked up the word "Boring" in the dictionary, you would find a picture of this Piazza. There's nothing here.

Yelp
I went here for the Christmas Market during night time on December 9. Very pretty at night however it is so crowded you can't get anywhere! I was literally shoved everywhere I went and wasn't able to see anything. I went back the next day during the day and was able to fully enjoy the market and all the little shops. If you want the overcrowded experience, night time is for you. Otherwise, daytime is easier to get through and to take pictures.

Yelp
There wasn't much going on in the actual piazza when I was there. One solo performer in the square and not many people. The Basilica there is the burial place for Macchiavelli, Michelangelo and Galileo, though! There are also some hopping bars and restaurants nearby.

Yelp
Everything about this place is beautiful. I would suggest coming once to go inside, and again sometime after 5:30 when it is closed and most of the tourist are gone. There is so much history and so many great thinkers buried there. The gardens to pray in are also absolutely stunning.

Yelp
Nice piazza to relax at and have lunch. The Basilica at this piazza is that dominates the place.

Yelp
This wonderful Church is also the Pantheon of italian celebrities as Michelangelo and others. Outside the church there's a strange burial, Gerolamo Segato's one. Fab!
