I was surprised to see a previous review of Pepe's Thrifty Shop, which is well off the beaten track, http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/5_dMuab48YGhl18uCFSufQ/l
written just a few days ago, and a good review it is. Read it before you go here because from my experience, it seems accurate.
I did like Pepe's, though, despite the issues with some of the inventory. And it was pretty crowded when I was there yesterday, Friday, even though one of the local streets was closed temporarily and parking was ridiculous. Normally, parking would be a breeze. That's OK, I explored the neighborhood looking for a spot to dump my car, and discovered a house with an AstroTurf lawn, haha. Meticulously manicured hedges and grass as fake as half the boobs in LA.....haha what a sight.....
Pepe's is open every day except Sunday, from 10am to 6ish pm. There are a couple of resident dogs, friendly and cute. http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/-5u91AiQD8Us8iNjisQU0w/l
The shop is considerably larger than it appears from the street, it goes waaaay back. It appears Pepe's took over a space next door that was once a Mexican restaurant. http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/0ufR7g-gKV1UdmDSzl0k5Q/l
Anyway, there's a lot to see. It reminds me of (a smaller version of) Wertz Bros., where you climb around amidst the stacked-up junque, I mean treasures, and get down and get dirty. Don't wear good clothes it you're a serious Thrifty shopper.
Pepe's has a crapload of lamps, http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/PKskBsPCKxardugbTPliXg/l
including one hanging fixture I loved: the glass grape lights, which were actually 3, separate. I inquired about their age and history, and was told (by the owner I presume)......that she knew nothing about them and they cost $35. Each. Not too bad. http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/6im_eeSyvkcFMhEK8ktxlw/l
When I found an interesting chair at the back of the store, the proprietor knew nothing about it, either. We turned it over to look for a label. It, too, cost .......$35. Haha, it was the 35 dollar day I guess. If I'd had a place for that chair, I might have bought it, after bargaining, because there were permanent stains on the seat. http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/nhoUqS39drj8iRdAVzVG-g/l
Pepe's Thrifty had a ton of wall art, all over the store. There were some decent old original framed paintings, mostly landscapes. It would be great fun to poke around through the vintage pictures some day, and I will.
Thrift shops get me all fired up. Earlier in the day I bought an overpriced 60's ceramic platter at Council Thrift on Venice. I love to look at unusual old crap, and Pepe's certainly has it.
This appears to be a double oven, from the days long before stackable washer/dryers. http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/o1RIWc-TrwRSOgLV17LITA/l
And here's a headless statue or something, laying under a table, haha. http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/cbCPAwOZ4l8v8L-k2v0LBQ/l
And creepy dolls stare at you from dark corners. http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/EDF0_BA4cZ-WCsU4R2AcJw/l
Posted store rules: don't move furniture yourself, ask for assistance. And control your kids, haha.
Another sign says they fix lamps. http://static.px.yelp.com/bphoto/_k5e2y34IK1OWgcyj0y9GQ/l
Pepe's Thrifty has not seen the last of me. I need a bigger house.
