At Dublin's trendy intersection of Stephen and Digges lies one of the hippest gastropubs in town! You enter a hive of activity, a bustling bar blasting loud rock music with mostly millennials immersed in lively conversation. My initial concern was that the impressive Yelp ratings were exclusively reserved for the atmosphere and drinks, while we were actually pursuing food. But all fears would be alleviated.
WARNING: Although the bar is open into the wee hours of the morning, the kitchen was actually closing around 7:45 p.m. on this particular night, and this was a Friday night! So if you want food, get there early!
TIP: In the U.S., as soon as you enter a sit-down restaurant you're greeted by a hostess who seats you. There is no guesswork. But the procedure is chaotic in Ireland and the UK, and you never know what to do. So, if you're visiting P.Mac's for the first time, apparently the procedure here is to seat yourselves, send an ambassador to ask an employee behind the bar for menus, order, eat, ask someone for the check, and pay at the table. This is by no means universal in this part of the world, but it works here.
The chicken strips were remarkably similar to what we eat in America, about the closest in all of Ireland! Our best chicken in the U.S. is a bit juicer and the batter a little saltier, but the chicken at P.Mac's will definitely suffice. It comes with two delicious sauces, one garlic-based and one sweet.
The bacon fries are phenomenal, a combination of french fries, cheese, and a fantastic bacon jam that is perfectly salty and loaded with pieces of bacon. I mean loaded!
In a fun twist, the bill comes on a warmed plate with complimentary candy. We got two suckers and two Swizzels Drumsticks which are similar to taffy. A splendid experience overall!
