Solid Thai food and very generous portions that can easily be shared. Salads are spicier than entrees. The food is fresh and did not take long to come out. We both liked what we ordered. My mouth was burning, but it gave me life. Wasn’t expecting I but wasn’t mad. The location is cute, but as soon as you enter it smells terrible like an old cat. Or dirty cats. Which is obviously off putting when you’re coming to eat. Hopefully that can be removed.

When we first entered the restaurant, it's like a house. The party in front of us entered, and we followed behind. I was the last to enter when the hostess yelled, "Shut the door." Okay, she could have asked nicely. We were seated close to the kitchen/entrance. The server gave us water and the menu. 2 more tables of guests were seated. We waited to place our order when we realized the other 2 tables' orders were taken prior to ours. We proceeded to call the hostess, who, in turn, took our orders. Our appetizer was the spring roll. The outside shell triple the thickness than any other Thai restaurant we've visited before. It's absolutely disgusting. We just ate the inside. The rest of our dinner was quite good. They already added 20% tip to your bill. That's why they don't have to use customer service skills, because this place has none. For sure, not returning and letting those who read reviews avoid this place.

Ate here the final day of our trip! Very cool indoor lighting and I think they have a little outdoor patio. The samosas appetizer was a must get, very flavorful and doesn't just taste like a fried food. My husband ordered the sweet and sour, his friend ordered a rice dish level 5 heat 🥵 and I ordered mango curry level 2 heat. They take the heat order seriously here! I've ordered level 5s in other establishments that are hotter than this level 2 so I'm very impressed that they won't shy away from serving the spice. The dish presentation was fabulous, and gave plenty of portion for the price. I usually order pineapple curry but have never had mango curry before so had to try it. I was surprised the mango was not served in chunks or blended into the sauce, it was hard and cut into thin strips like a vegetable. I'll have to find another mango curry to compare, but the curry taste was familiar!

Google
20% added automatically for group of 2. Would be fine if service wasn't just pouring water, ordering, getting food, and getting the check. Portions are small. Tom yum hot pot has barely 3 small bowls, and was overly acidic and bland. Red curry tasted like soup and wasn't especially flavorful. Indoor was hot, walking out of the restaurant after eating was a relief even when it's 90F outside. We walked out hungry, but glad we didn't order more. You'd expect more given how the items are priced. Only pros, the shrimps in the Tom yum tasted good and the water didn't taste weird.

I've been wanting to eat at Nicky's for quite a while, and we were lucky to come across it on the way to a different restaurant! Delicious!! We had crispy egg rolls, delicate and just the right amount of filing. Thai iced coffee, and mango juice, mmm, hit the spot. Green curry, with chicken-3 spice, and it was pretty spicy, but perfect. Shrimp red chili, 2 spice, great flavor and a little spicy...one of the 3 dishes recommended by waitress, and so happy I ordered it. Ginger beef, very tasty, lots of ginger and garlic, and beef was tender. All meals came with steamed rice, and a crab Rangoon on top of rice...I WILL order a side of Rangoon next time!! By far the best I ever had! All of our food was delicious, service was pleasant and tentative, and atmosphere was quaint. (Could have been a little cooler inside, but would not keep me from going back) Can't wait to go back!

Google
Very nice setting where the dining room is beautifully decorated giving a Thai ambiance. Service is fine, though they do add a mandatory service charge for all parties regardless of size. Pad Thai and pad siew were overly sweet. Also the Thai ice tea was overly sweet. Tofu with vegetables dish was very mild spice even though medium hot spice was requested. Curry noodle soup was very flavorful and the noodles were not overcooked.

Google
We had a large party and they accommodated us very nicely. I mainly wanted to rave about their Banana roll ice cream dessert and the steamed dumpling appetizer! So yummy!

We've been wanting to eat at Nicky's for AGES. We're so glad we finally got the chance to experience it! Everything we ordered was fresh, delicious, and so very colorful. The portions are also super generous!

Karla D.

Yelp
I've been coming here since they opened oh so many years ago. One of the best local restaurants hands down. The food is always spectacular and spot on. Dishes bursting with flavor. Incredible ambiance and service. Always top notch.

Ken L.

Yelp
This spot is really cute on western! I love that it's a restaurant in a house. I really only got pickup so next time I will have to sit down and really try more food here. The staff seemed very nice and pickup was ready pretty quickly. I think I got too much spice in my food that I couldn't really taste anything. I got a medium pad see ew and it was so spicy I couldn't really get a taste for the noodles. The pad Thai was pretty good. Next time I'll definitely get a mild. I think their dishes are kind of overpriced since I paid almost $25 for a noodle dish. The portions are big though.

Carolyn K.

Yelp
Super cozy and quaint vibes. Outdoor dining space is second to none in the summer (not open in the winter). BYOB establishment with super reasonable corking fees ($5 for wine, $1 for beer). FYI; there is an awesome winery across the street (Refucilo, but be sure to check their hours as they are limited). Been coming here for YEARS and it's been super consistent and delicious. This time around, wanted to try the Crispy Egg Rolls, and the Chicken Black. Hit the spot. Really full flavor, and authentic. Highly recommend. I think having reservations are best, but it was a Friday night around 8pm and for 2 people we were seated right away. Service is always friendly and the staff is knowledgeable about the menu.

Kínã D. R.

Yelp
I enjoyed my first visit to this restaurant. The crab fried rice was 10/10! I loved the decor of the restaurant as well.

Jenn G.

Yelp
Sat outside. The water pouring was on point. Everything was delicious. The fresh spring rolls were a little too hard to chew but they were still tasty. The outside is so beautiful! Lots of statues and lanterns. Very sunny and bright. Lots of plants. Service was very attentive and kind.

Tina L.

Yelp
This place has very good pad see ew. We got the chicken pad Thai and veggie pad see ew. We got spice level of 2 for pad Thai and it was pretty spicy! Pad see ew we got a spice level of 1 and could not even tell they added spice! I wonder if they'd do 1.5. The lady was very nice and kept our table filled with water. The place has pretty decorations and such a reflection of their culture. It's so nice here and would come back! Lunch is cheaper. Expect dinner to range from $20-$30 for a dish.

Maria N.

Yelp
I recently moved to Pittsburgh and heard of Nicky's Thai Kitchen frequently. On my day off, I decided to try the downtown location on Penn Ave. first of all, the restaurant is cute and at a great location. And the service was great! The server was sweet and attentive. But unfortunately, I was disappointed by the food! I had high expectations due to the accolades on their website. But the food fell short and didn't meet my expectations. I ordered the Pad See Ew and it was primarily flavored with chili oil only. It lacked soy and oyster sauce. The friend spring rolls were a disappointment too. It was mostly the egg roll wrapper and lacked filling and flavor. This place didn't meet the hype by any means. At least I tried it once. But the at was enough for me!

Kelley B.

Yelp
The food was okay. The service was good until a few minutes before we finished our meal when the server brought the check and informed us that a 20% gratuity was added to the bill. While I have no problem with that, I would have appreciated knowing beforehand. After we paid the bill, no more than two to three minutes later, we were asked to leave because people were waiting. This was a business lunch, and had I known this was the protocol, we would have chosen to dine elsewhere. I will not be returning.

Jorge I.

Yelp
Omg! One of the best Thai food I've ever had! The pad thai sauce was wonderful and just the right tamarind flavor. The Panang curry had a great peanut butter taste! I highly recommend this place.

Lauren T.

Yelp
Yep, Nicky's still has my heart. Look at this food. The Tom Kha soup nourishes my body and soul and the mango salad couldn't be more fresh or flavorful.

Diana L.

Yelp
I've always enjoyed the food at other Nicky's Thai Kitchen locations and stopped by this one since we were in the area. Massaman Curry (4/5 stars) - Great taste, a large portion of curry with a good amount of chicken and potatoes. Thai iced tea (2/5 stars) - Way too sweet. Tall glass looks nice but is hard to mix. I was basically forcing it down due to how cloyingly sweet it was. Ambiance (3/5 stars) - Not much to say here. It's a pretty small indoor seating area. The wooden tables and small room gives a vibe like dining in someone's house. Why 2-star review? While the food was good as usual, I hadn't noticed until now that a gratuity of 20% is already included in the receipt, which isn't mentioned ahead of time. Normally I'd be fine tipping 20% anyway, but the problem is the receipt also lists "suggestion tips" of 18-25% IN ADDITION TO the included 20% gratuity (picture of receipt included for reference). So basically, they are hoping you won't notice and will tip them twice. Feels deceptive and I no longer feel comfortable supporting this business in the future.

Tom F.

Yelp
One of my favorite Thai places to eat. Always great food selections and service. Outdoor dining are is great. Highly recommend.

Lauren B.

Yelp
I've eaten at Nicky's Thai many times. I usually frequent the location downtown. There are two things that I notoriously get from this restaurant and that's the green curry and fried wontons. I enjoy the lunch special because it offers both plus a lunch side salad. Green curry is a Thai dish that I love and eat quite frequently. I'm not sure if this was a bad batch of if they changed their recipe. The wonton was on point! The service was good, the food comes out quick and hot.

Sarah M.

Yelp
This place is incredible, I don't understand the negative reviews. Our curry was creamy and spicy and delicious. The dumplings were awesome (and that dipping sauce was banging). Service was good, they were just busy. The back patio was nice and shaded enough that you aren't roasting. There wasn't a sneaky tip added onto our bill like some people mentioned (party of 2). Will definitely come back if we are in Pittsburgh again!

Dave S.

Yelp
The food was served fast, presented very nicely and tasted very well. Crab Rangoon ( sorry don't know spelling) was the best I ever had. Overall Excellent experience.

Kevin C.

Yelp
Always great food with a great presentation. I prefer this location to the one downtown. I have been missing coming here for lunch and it did not disappoint. Yummy!

Beth Ellyn D.

Yelp
If you haven't been to Nicky's you are missing out on some of the best Thai food in the Burgh. Bright, fresh, flavor packed dishes served to perfection. It's a small space (probably only 8 tables inside) so you need to plan accordingly. The outside area is nice but it's not always open. Street packing available

Julia C.

Yelp
Great lunch experience at Nicky's Thai Kitchen! There is only street parking available but we were easily able to find a spot. Because of staffing, the back patio wasn't open for seating. When we came in on a Saturday afternoon before the Pitt game we were seated right away. Staff were all friendly and welcoming. I was pleasantly surprised that the lunch entrees all came with the choice of a soup of the day or salad. I got the chicken and rice soup which was delicious! All of our entrees were amazing. The appetizer sampler we got was delicious as well. The Thai iced coffee was sweet and tasted great. Prices were very reasonable. Even getting lunch portions there were large portions so we took home food. Overall great Thai food in Pittsburgh!

Nivi R.

Yelp
I came here on Valentine's Day with a bunch of coworkers while on a business trip in Pittsburgh. Fully expecting to be turned away, I was pleasantly surprised when they were able to accommodate 6 of us. We went family style and got - pad Thai, spicy fried rice, spicy noodles with chicken, pineapple fried rice, crab Rangoon, dumplings and red curry. Everything was beyond delicious. Would come here again any day!

Eric K.

Yelp
Food is great, but their business practices are terrible. They include a tip in the total without telling you and then in large print on the bottom of the receipt they include 3 amounts of suggested tips. Setting people up to double tip really sucks!

Marla C.

Yelp
I think this is some of the best Thai food in Pittsburgh. I have gotten to go and it's amazing. I have eaten at the downtown location outside and I love the outside sitting. The service was good! All the good I have tried is good!!

Stephanie T.

Yelp
One of the best Thai restaurants in Pittsburgh. The decoration outdoors in really pretty and a great place to dine in the warmer months. The food is delicious and service is great.

Randy T.

Yelp
Ordered the roti, summer rolls, pad see ew, and grilled duck curry Roti: 1/5 dude it was a limp scallion pancake without the scallion. It wasn't even a roti. Summer rolls: 1/5 i just hate summer rolls but this was supposed to have tofu and it was the smallest amount of tofu eva Pad see ew: 3/5, not bad, would get for takeout in the future if it wasn't $20 Grilled duck curry: 3/5, not bad but $35 wtf..? And then then they had the audacity to automatically add 20% tip. Yeah pass on this one

Bayard C.

Yelp
They close at 9pm during the week and graciously sat me at 8:35. Arguably the best Tom Yum soup (had with shrimp) I've ever had, even after living in Thai Town in LA. Quiet dining room and a cozy patio with a water fountain make for a nice ambiance.

Burt G.

Yelp
Just went here again, haven't been back in ages. The decor is always awesome and the food seems well cooked and seasoned. If you want something that is not as spicy it might not be the place. I tried to order a not so spicy version of my food, but it was hella spicy. Maybe there was some miscommunication.

Kat V.

Yelp
We love Nicky's. All locations are great, but the north hills is my favorite, since it's bigger and has plenty of FREE parking. They have beautiful outdoor dining and delicious food (as all the Nicky's locations do). Highly recommended!

Phuong N.

Yelp
Love their decorations of the outdoor seating but can't say much about the food we ordered. The seafood Hotpot I got was not even warm. They could have boiled it before putting it in the hotpot. The weather that day was not cold that the hotpot would have cooled down that fast from the time our server brought it out to our table. I also ordered the fish basil crispy tilapia fillets, stir-fried with garlic, basil, bell peppers, yellow onions, egg plant, green bean, bamboo slice, spicy basil sauce. I requested very spicy but it wasn't. One coworker got the pineapple fried rice with chicken and the rice was undercooked. When he made a complaint they took it back and redid it but we don't think they replaced it bc it came back still undercooked. They will charge you a gratuity so keep that in mind..

John L.

Yelp
Food 2-3 stars Service 4 stars Ambiance 4-5 stars I dropped overall rating due to the cost for ok food. The appetizer sampler seemed right out of the supermarket freezer and poorly heated up. A friend got the seafood curry, light on seafood but $35, I got the grilled duck curry, maybe 8-10 thin slices of duck and not enough vegetables $35. The mango sticky rice was $9 . Then the rub was a 20% gratuity automatically added. We sat in the back, which was quite nice as far as ambiance, but too expensive for meh food.

Jeffrey P.

Yelp
Food was very good. Unfortunately, we asked for a box to take the pad tai noodle dish home. They gave us a very small styrofoam box that could not hold all the food. When we were leaving I saw the table behind us received a large aluminum pan to use for their food to go. Very disappointing.

Steve O.

Yelp
Food was bland, generous portions but still relatively expensive. Pad Thai was tasteless. Chicken basil was drowned in sauce and Sea bass was small, over cooked and meatless. Chicken soup was somewhat palatable. They added 20% gratuity to the total bill even though there were only 3 diners. I will not be going back.

Zarin H.

Yelp
I saw out in the garden with a friend food was really big portions and good. Loved the ambiance of sitting in the garden overall good time with a friend. She ordered the glass noodles I ordered the rice with minced chicken and eggs and wontons and spring rolls and Thai tea.

Rebecca M.

Yelp
My first time at this Nicky's location! Parking was tough during lunch. Service was ok. Food is always great, but I am concerned that they use chicken broth in their vegetarian dishes. My noodles were amazing! However, when your body isn't used to eating certain things it isn't happy with you when you surprise it with some good old chicken broth!! The next time I stop in, I will be sure to ask about this before ordering again. The outdoor seating area is beautiful! Would be a great happy hour, or date spot!

Jenny Y.

Yelp
One of the worst pad thai I have ever had. How do you mess up Thai's signature noodle dish? Chicken basil was okay at best average. If you're Asian and have experienced really great thai food, you will surely agree that this particular thai restaurant is not one of them. Also be aware that they sneak in an automatic 20% gratuity to your bill even though there were only 3 of us. (Maybe trying to double dip on the tip ? People check you bill!

Alex B.

Yelp
I ordered the chicken and shrimp pad Thai. The chicken was microscopic, or they forgot it. Not sure. But it tasted great. Mild/medium is a good spice level for enjoying the flavor and not sweating too much lol I'd get it again for sure.

Brooke G.

Yelp
Nicky's is one of my favorite restaurants in the whole city. The ingredients are always fresh, the service is good and the food is so flavorful and delicious. The Kao Soy noodles is my go-to because it's just so creamy, yet sweet and spicy. The consistency of Nicky's keeps me coming back!

Shanell W.

Yelp
Big portions!! Food is always great and I love their outside area!! One of my favorite Thai spots

Maddie L.

Yelp
I've only done take out orders from here, but they have never disappointed! Relatively quick, and the food is always delicious. Their spice levels are accurate in my opinion, which isn't the case at all Thai restaurants. I'll keep coming back!

Ajay H.

Yelp
Came here on a busy Thursday (post-Christmas) eve before heading downtown to Heinz Hall to check out the Illusionists! We were greeted immediately by the host and were seated immediately. Make sure to close the doors behind you! This spot has a very cozy, homey vibe. Our server was exceptionally friendly and attentive, and made sure to refill our waters (without ice). Wonder how we knew we didn't want ice (bc Asian). After a few minutes with the menu, we went with the Pad Thai with Tofu (spice level 4/5) and a Yellow Curry Fried Rice with Chicken (spice level 3/5). I think 4/5 is solid if you can handle spice, but this would be my limit. Both the dishes were served piping hot within a few minutes, and hit quite the spot. Drizzling the fried rice with the chopped chilies and fish sauce was the icing on the cake, so-to-speak. Awesome experience, although on the pricier side; would definitely return here again soon!

Bill J.

Yelp
Very nice dinner. Great service. Paola was great. Food was excellent. Byob. Nice atmosphere.

Ramya R.

Yelp
Poor customer service. Fresh vegetable rolls were bland and yellow chicken curry was too spicy. All their vegetarian dishes including saladshave fish/oyster sauces in them!(it's not mentioned in the menu though) Very noisy place, left with a head ache and then stomach ache added to it later.

Saiteja G.

Yelp
I came here during lunch around 1 PM on a Saturday, and the place was absolutely jam packed. We managed to get a table for two but larger parties were still waiting. I ordered Samosas, a Thai Fried Rice and chicken panang curry to serve two people. Coming from the Indian subcontinent, I have been eating samosas all my life and know exactly how they taste like. These were two raw and bland. This is the only reason I took a star off. The panang curry and the fried rice were perfect. I like the taste and aroma. I would definitely visit back. The food was definitely in affordable price and served in decent portions. I enjoyed the ambiance and may be the service was a bit slow.

Spencer S.

Yelp
Came here after a long day trip to and from Toledo. Not in the best of moods as my college football team had just lost a nail-biter and was looking for something to cheer me up. (Thai has a way of doing that for me) Our group of 4 was promptly seated out in the back patio per our request where we were enveloped by beautiful plants, the warm night air, smiling Buddhas and spouting fountains. It was all of our first times and two of the party were not particularly familiar with Thai fare. We quickly trained them up and among the four of us selected Pumpkin Curry, Green Curry, Phad See Eaw and Yellow Curry Fried Rice. Each dish was beautifully plated and heaping with gobs of delicious food. We kept it toned down on our spice level (2-3) and were plenty happy with the outcome. Not butt-burning but just a hint. Noodles and rice were well cooked and the vegetables were fresh and well prepared. I'm so happy we have leftovers for tomorrow! We will definitely be back for that patio feel and vibes.

Vincent V.

Yelp
The food and service were great: best Thai I've had in a while. The duck curry was awesome, and even the egg rolls were notable.

Molly R.

Yelp
We've gotten take out here a few times since the quarantine! We've ordered right through Yelp. They even gave us a complimentary Thai tea last time. I love their pad Thai and my husband almost always tries something new. I think this past time was a curry? Definitely one to order or eat at again when things are open.

Mark M.

Yelp
I have been going to Nicky's for many years and have always enjoyed their food. I haven't gone as much lately because I feel like they have been giving less and charging more. But then when you eat the food, you kind of forget about that because the food is very good. The Western Avenue location recently went through some renovations and I just went to have lunch there recently and after getting my bill, I started to leave a 20% tip and total out the bill and after I signed it I thought that the bill seemed a bit high for two people. Buried at the bottom of the charge receipts was the actual itemized bill and everything was as it should be with one exception, they had automatically added 20% to the bill and totaled it. So I was giving another 20% on the already inflated bill. On the charge receipt they did not indicate that they had already put on 20% or give you a place that said "additional gratuity". They just had the total and "add tip", then "total". VERY MISLEADING! I am glad I caught it and made the change. The service was not terrible, but not great. It is the first time I have ever been to a restaurant that automatically added a 20% gratuity on a party of two. I understand when they do it for a larger group and completely agree with that, but to do it on a party of two and not even make it clear on the receipt you are signing and adding a tip to is very unprofessional. Very disappointed. I think I will be trying the many other food options available in our city.

Gregory K.

Yelp
Delicious Thai food! Went with our family and everyone loved every dish! Definitely worth it. Probably the best restaurant in this area of town.

Delia S.

Yelp
I like Nicky's. I'm a little spoiled since most of my favorite Thai restaurants aren't in Pittsburgh. But this is one of the better options in this city. The atmosphere is delightful.

Matt N.

Yelp
My beautiful bride and I came here for Valentines day weekend. I made reservations ahead of time for 530pm and we actually got here right when they opened at 5pm. There was already a line building up to get in here. If you plan on coming here make sure to call ahead for reservations just to be safe. Even though we were early they still sat us at our table right away. It's a small dining room and it was packed. So if you don't like eating in a small place maybe just order take out and go to a brewery. Hey that's not bad idea! Anyways we were seated and got comfy. We have been eating a lot of Thai food lately and we both have been in a wide noodles type of mood so that's what we ordered. First we started with Spring rolls with shrimp in them that were delicious. We were hungry and ate every roll with no problem. Like I said we have been eating a lot of Thai and this was up there as one of the best rolls. Carrie asked for their hot spices to whip up here own spice which turned out pretty good. I used some it too for my rolls. It took about 15 to 20 minutes to get our main dish. I ordered the Phad See Eaw and my wife ordered the Spicy Noodle. Her dish was really good so check out her review on that. My Phad See Eaw was good too. I ate about half of it cause I wanted to leave some to take for home. I'm glad that I did. I thought my Phad See Eaw was a solid 4 at first. I thought at another Thai restaurant my wide noodles were slightly better. It wasn't until I got home and reheated my food the next day that I liked it even more. I'm not sure why but sometimes reheated food does it for me and it sure did here. It's a solid 5 just like a lot of our Yelp friends who love this place. Overall we had a very nice dinner here and we are looking forward to coming back soon. It is a little small in there but it's not too bad and it's a decent price for a lot of food.

David R.

Yelp
Went here with friends recently. We were seated on their outdoor patio on a beautiful evening. Everything was excellent here. We started with a mix of spring rolls and egg rolls as well as the Thai toasts. Yum! Our dinner orders were all over the map; red curry, yellow curry, a fish dish and sen mee pad see eaw (spelling?), which was amazing. Great service and cheap corkage fee. We'll be back!!

Jenna W.

Yelp
Delicious Thai food!! I had never been to this location before, but now I realize I was missing out. While the downtown restaurant is always busy and a bit crazy, this location is calm and has a fantastic back patio with fountains, statues, and plants. Our server was excellent too. She continuously filled up our water glasses and brought us everything we needed without us even asking; it's like she could read our minds. I ordered the Cashew Chicken entree and it was delicious. The dish is full of peppers, carrots, broccoli and onions, as well as chicken and topped with cashews. My spice level of 3 was just enough to give it a bit of heat but not too much to not enjoy the flavor. I would have liked the veggies to be cooked just a little bit longer to be less crunchy, but I still really enjoyed my meal. Portion sizes are quite large too, so you have leftovers.
