New High Mart

A lovely store with items that sometimes fill you with wonder. The owners Richard and Miho have truly amazing taste. And their thoughtful, personal, attention and kindness couldn’t be more pleasant. It elevates you just go in there.

My partner and I walked into the back entrances and the owner was sitting outside. He asked us what we were looking for and we said New High Mart. He then said, “it’s here but what are you looking for exactly?” We told him that this was a recommendation from our friend. At this point I felt like he didn’t want us to come in so I asked “is it okay if we go inside”. He let us in and my partner pulled his camera out and the owner freaked out. We apologized and told him that we can put the camera away and that there wasn’t any footage. He yelled and dismissed the both of us and said “I can’t allow this ‘energy’ into our shop” This is the first review I’ve ever written for a shop but if i were you I would not support anyone like this. It showed that he didn’t want us to come in and we should have turned around when he first questioned us. I now see that there are other reviews expressing how rude the owner(s) are and it’s true. Please do not support this shop. Lastly, I conclude that my partner and I are both black and it felt like he stereotyped us from when we first walked towards the shop.

What an interesting experience. New High Mart is one of the most unique shops of ever been in, and it's definitely not pretentious at all. The wares are curated with acute attention to function and quality, meaning that some things do carry a higher price tag, but it's well deserved. The shop has all kinds of quality goods, making it a great place to find practical gifts or a nice treat for yourself. Or, if you're not looking to spend any money for the day, step through the portal to an entirely different land. But remember: phones must be stowed during the whole visit!

Despite shopping at this store for years, after my experience yesterday, I will never go there again. I came in with 3-other friends, who also been shopping there for years. We were all made to feel completely unwelcome and like potential shoplifters. The owner made a snide remark as we came in... because there were 4 of us coming in at once. And then one of the salespeople started stalking us around the store. It made my friend so uncomfortable that she stepped out of the store within minutes. The rest of us had actually come in for specific items, so we stayed and purchased those things.... but those will be the last purchases any of us make!

Absolutely shocked by the behavior of the white androgynous salesboy who without even greeting us told us sternly to put away our cameras!!! I was holding my cell on my left hand as I was pointing the fisherman’s jacket with my right hand to my friend visiting from SFO! I had shopped here before for my fisherman’s jacket but I will never ever be spoken to like that. The previous time I had shopped here the Japanese salesgirl was polite and friendly. Done with this store.... sayonara!!

One of the most arrogant, disappointing people I’ve ever met. Friend was previous customer, and upon leaving the owner guilt tripped us for wasting his time and not buying anything. Absolutely pathetic. We had every intention to buy something, but the military pants I had my eye on for 178$ had a stain. We tried and he went on and on about how we wasted his time. Ugh, some people.

One of the most amazing experience I've ever had on a retail level. The store owner was the kindest most knowledgeable Midwestern I was happy to spend a few hundred dollars and will do so again. Great store!

This place is a paean to a half-forgotten version of Japanese life that perhaps never entirely existed. Visit only when you have time to linger, and perhaps stay for a cup of tea. New High Mart moves at its own pace.
