"Quirky, stylish Medusa is a converted eighteenth-century Victorian townhouse in ultra-fashionable Darlinghurst, Sydney’s gallery and boutique district. The award-winning design, by prominent Australian interior architect Scott Werner, is anything but Victorian; in fact, these daring, modern interiors are a large factor in Medusa’s draw, especially among the young, creative types the hotel (and the neighborhood) caters to." - Mark Fedeli

"Owned by Terry Kaljo—a former model and founder of the Contemporary Hotels collection of upscale rental homes and villas—the Medusa Boutique Hotel offers 18 unique accommodations in Darlinghurst, an eclectic area and the epicenter of Sydney ’s gay community. The 19th-century home is filled with wacky touches, from red Alice in Wonderland–style carpeting that runs up the grand staircase to pastel-pink walls studded with maple leaves in the entryway. The midcentury-modern rooms—with their retro primary colors, geometric patterns, and vintage chaises longues—attract fashion, media, and design professionals looking to get beneath the surface of one of Sydney’s liveliest neighborhoods. But there's still the opportunity to relax, as guests can settle in next to the fireplace in the lobby to read the newspaper, enjoy a complimentary pastry, or make new friends. Longtime staff members offer the kind of local knowledge and personal attention that keeps guests coming back."

"How did it strike you on arrival? A jaunty, white-shuttered red townhouse flanked by trees in the buzzy inner-city neighbourhood of Darlinghurst, veteran boutique hotel Medusa is an intimate retreat for a relaxed urban getaway. Nice. What’s the crowd like? Centrally located Darlinghurst is home to lively cafes, bars, restaurants, shops and galleries, and also to Sydney’s vibrant gay scene. The Medusa attracts globetrotters keen to plug into this creative community, whether unwinding at the weekend or partying at Mardi Gras. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. Some of the 18 light, airy Grand, Premium and Deluxe rooms overlook the inner courtyard, others a streetscape, with blonde wood bedheads, colorful feature walls, and comfy seats or chaise longues. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us? Sleep easy in Queen or King size beds, with superior cotton bed linen and wool blankets. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? All rooms have kitchenettes with microwave ovens and tea- and coffee-making kit, plus a well-stocked minibar, Lindt chocolates, complimentary breakfast pastries and newspaper. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. Many of the ensuites have baths (request one when booking). Australian Aesop toiletries are super-covetable. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word? Wi-Fi is available in all rooms for a nominal fee, with a business room if you need a computer. Room service: Worth it? Fancy eating in? Medusa’s team can arrange delivery from local restaurants. Staff: If you could award one a trophy, who gets it, and why? Don’t let the snake-haired Medusa artwork in reception spook you. Friendly 24-hour concierge staff can share tips on the best places to drink, eat, work out or swim. There’s no in-house restaurant, but lots of desirable dining spots are within walking distance. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you. Medusa’s romantic courtyard has a Miami-meets-Mediterranean feel, with an ornamental reflection pool, white lounge chairs and parasols. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay? Unusually for Australia, dog-friendly Medusa’s Courtyard Rooms welcome canine guests, across all three categories, subject to availability. Bottom line: worth it, and why? You’re just a stroll from Kings Cross, Potts Point, the CBD and local dining venues. Try iconic Bills (433 Liverpool Street) for breakfast, Italian restaurants A Tavola (348 Victoria Street) and Buffalo Dining Club (116 Surrey Street) for lunch or dinner, casual Darlo Bar (306 Liverpool Street) and Johnny Fishbone Wine Parlour (185 Darlinghurst Road) for drinks, or Eau de Vie (229 Darlinghurst Road) for cocktails." - Sophie Davies

The entire staff was incredible helpful when we arrived very late in the area after a very late emergency reservation. We end up staying for 3 nights and enjoyed the relaxed and vibrant streets around Darlinghurst Street. This hotel is a reason to return! Thanks again Medusa team 🙏🏻

Misleading and deceptive information during booking. I did not see any description of the room during booking. After booking, the receipt shows the name of the room is Junior. I emailed the property and asked the size of the bed and whether it can accommodate 2 adults. After a few repeated emails, I received only an answer saying, "It can accommodate 2 adults." It turned out the room was very, very small. There is only 1-foot space on 3 sides of the double bed. There is only about 4ftx6ft space on the 4th side of the bed. There are no chair, table, no space for walking if you have 4 pieces of luggage. The room has the shape of a slice of a pizza slice. Small lamps are full of dust. Closet does not have room to hang clothes. The bathroom doesn't have a counter for toiletries. The property emailed me on the check-in date saying that the room is Premium. That was clearly a lie. |I searched Medusa web sites on Junior room. All photos (attached) of Junior room show rooms with at least 2ft space on both sides of the bed. Some photos show enough room for a table and chair. That is misleading and deceptive. The room I got was nothing like these photos. The room number is 208. |Attached photos show it all.

A beautifully located hotel with outstanding service, providing a truly first-class experience from start to finish. The reception team deserves special recognition for their warm and professional welcome, ensuring that every check-in detail was smooth and seamless. Additionally, the breakfast staff went above and beyond, providing attentive service that made our mornings exceptionally enjoyable. The hotel’s prime location is ideal, with numerous attractions, restaurants, and local highlights within just a few minutes’ walk, making it perfect for both leisurely strolls and easy access to key sights. Our room was a haven of comfort, especially with its exceptionally comfortable bed that ensured we had a restful night’s sleep, feeling refreshed each morning. We wholeheartedly recommend The Medusa to anyone seeking an unforgettable stay in the area. Congratulations to the entire team for their dedication and attention to detail. We look forward to returning and experiencing this wonderful hospitality again soon!

Cute little hotel. Comfy bed, good shower, windows that open, friendly staff, fab location. Would stay again. Few drawbacks: limited amenities (no body lotion), kitchenette is really not much. Has a mike and plates but not even bowls for soup or joghurt.

An absolute dump run by rude and unhelpful staff. Cockroaches running everywhere. Found food scraps under the bed. The receptionist was drunk. The power wouldn't come on. I rang the after hours number as reception closed at 5pm, but as you can see from the photos attached I received no response because there was no one mounting the after hours number. I had to leave the hotel so I could not reestablish power. I complain to the staff but they have simply ignored me.

Ophidiophobics might not make the Medusa their first choice of hotel in Sydney (the decor is very much on theme, with a particularly grim painting in the sitting room and a snake-haired bronze head in our room) but otherwise the place is without fault. There’s no lift, and we were on the top floor, but the delightful and effervescent Jesse welcomed us and wafted our two cases - a total of 37 kg! - up the stairs as if they contained nothing more than helium balloons and hummingbirds in flight. Thanks for your care and welcome!||The room was quiet and spotless and we valued the coffee pods and coffee bags, as well as a selection of tea bags. The complimentary Maltesers and wine were an unexpected blessing. The aircon was insistent that we check the menu in relation to some fault or other: no idea how even to start doing that, but the aircon worked so it can’t be a major issue. WiFi was fine. ||Comfortable bed but watch yourself on the frame - it’s wooden, has hard edges, and projects out beyond the mattress. Ouch, barked shin, but I doubt I’ll scar and it will teach me not to be careless. ||No food at the hotel - we recommend Rusty Rabbit for breakfast (the café, not as an ingredient) and Fortuna or Elettropizza for supper. But there are many many eateries close by in this vibrant suburb.||Travel to the hotel - whether from airport, Bondi or the harbour - is easy by bus or train: there’s a stop just outside for the half- hourly 511, but none of the other options are far away. If using Google Maps note the plethora of types of travel: T= train; L = light rail (tram); B = bus and M = metro. Depending on time of day some options are faster than others.

It was a horrendous experience to find out that my luggage and items were removed from my room because the cleaner couldn’t wait to clean the room when I went out to the gym. I’ve informed the staff in advance about my late check out as well as my time of return and even asked them to clean my room too until I’m away. It’s disrespectful and disgusting to see my stuff removed including my food in the mini bar and I had to book my cab and wait outside like a stranger. Thank you to the lady who offered me help and for trying to be a human being through this misery.

My wife and I just recently stayed here for 4 nights in their deluxe queen size bedroom and found the bed most comfortable and bathroom clean with a sizable shower. They supply Aesop brand (AUS) body wash and shampoo & conditioner as well hand soap. Aesop is a local luxury fragrance brand which we fell in love with. Some minor disappointments was the awkward kitchenette tucked in a cupboard, the many steps you climb (no elevator) and the current cabinets renovation at the front desk. Otherwise, our stay was good. Good location in heart of Darlinghurst with many eateries and metro/subway transit nearby. We pick Medusa hotel as it is relatively walkable to CBD attractions, however it is on top of a hill so walking back to hotel was a heavy chore on the legs, so much so we had to take a uber from the oper house.

Yelp
Fantastic hotel in a great neighborhood. Could have stayed here for two weeks comfortably, because the rooms are large with a sitting area and table. Plus the fridge, kettle, sink setup works perfectly for preparing a simple breakfast or snack. The guys who run the place are warm and helpful, with tips for great restaurants just a block away. I will definitely stay here again next time I'm in Sydney.

Yelp
This is now my go-to hotel in Sydney. The guys at the front desk really make for a fantastic stay and they are always there to answer any questions you may have. Luke was so friendly and he was great to chat to. It was a pleasure staying there. The rooms are lovely and ours overlooked the centre courtyard which had a fountain and was delightful to listen to. Our room was spacious complete with microwave, sink and tea and coffee making facilities. Aesop bath products made it feel all the more decadent. The hotel is in a great location and you are a short walk to Potts Point, Darlinghurst and Surry Hills. It only even takes around 20min to walk into the city so you aren't far from anything. Plenty of good spots for eating and drinking nearby too! I loved it there. Thanks to Luke and the rest of the team for a lovely stay.

Yelp
I really rate this hotel highly. In short, the staff are super friendly and helpful, the rooms are very comfortable with everything you need, the service and cleaning is a very high standard, it's an excellent location and it's dog friendly! Staff -- I think the staff is the best thing about this hotel. From the moment I called to enquire about a reservation to checking in late to making odd requests to my daily encounters and chit-chat with them to exposing them to my dog - they were really helpful, friendly and accommodating. Nothing was an inconvenience. Just the opposite in fact. They were also really funny, personable and uniques. They made my stay one to remember. Love the staff here. Rooms -- They have very comfortable rooms with all the extras you would find at at five star. I managed to get the last dog friendly room, which was their smallest because my booking was so last minute. But it was still very comfortable. And the guests I ran into regaled me of the spacious rooms they had - both dog friendly and non (the dog friendly rooms are on the ground floor with access to the courtyard). The courtyard is wonderful and was very pleasant to step out into each day. Clean -- Everything was clean and tidy. I never had any issue with cleanliness! Location -- Awesome! A great spot in Darlinghurst with plenty of bars, restaurants and cafés right nearby. The staff were also ready with recommendations and tips. Parks and convenience stores close and a plenty. Dog friendly -- It's so hard to find dog friendly accommodation and often when you do find a dog friendly hotel, it's always a bit reluctant with loads of qualifications attached. Not so here! They were so accommodating and helpful, and friendly to my dog. With dog or without - I highly recommend Medusa. I'm certainly coming back!
