Lee: A Creative Take on Southeast Asian Street Food
Stepping into Lee, you're greeted by a spacious, multi-level dining space with a sleek, modern design. Each table is adorned with a small potted plant and an adjustable table lamp, adding a cozy yet stylish touch. A friend of mine, arriving late, jokingly asked if the plant was edible--a lighthearted moment that reflected the restaurant's inviting atmosphere. The service was outstanding: warm, engaging, and full of personality, making it one of the best service experiences I've had. It reminded me of The Chase--where enthusiasm replaces routine, and you can truly feel the restaurant's dedication.
Food Review
Dim Sum Chicken Siu Mai
Served on a pineapple-infused fruit sauce and wrapped in a layer of crispy rice paper, this siu mai was more about texture than flavor. While creative in presentation, it didn't leave much of a lasting impression.
Homemade Broccoli Tofu Tempura
With a light, crisp coating, this tempura felt more like deep-fried stinky tofu in technique rather than traditional tempura. Topped with seasoned cabbage and served with a spicy sauce, most of the flavor came from the sauce itself.
Octopus Carpaccio
The thinly sliced octopus and sauce didn't quite complement each other on their own, but once paired with the crispy shrimp cracker, something magical happened. The contrast between the octopus' tenderness and the cracker's crunch, along with the interplay of sweet-sour sauce and umami-rich shrimp, created an unexpectedly harmonious bite.
Pad Thai
This version of Pad Thai came wrapped in a delicate egg omelet, making it look deceptively small. But once the egg casing was cut open, the noodles and ingredients spilled out in abundance--like uncorking a flood of flavors. Reminiscent of their signature salad, the dish was generously portioned and packed with the essential elements of a classic Pad Thai. The sweetness was within an acceptable range, and overall, it felt like an upgraded, "all-in" version of a traditional street-style Pad Thai.
Penang-Style Shrimp Ravioli
The shrimp filling had a texture similar to shrimp paste, encased in delicate wrappers and served with a tangy-sweet Penang-style sauce. A well-balanced dish for those who enjoy the interplay of acidity and umami.
Slow-Braised Malaysian Curry Beef
A rich and aromatic curry infused with coconut milk, this dish featured tender, slow-braised beef that absorbed the deep spice flavors beautifully. Indian paneer and yogurt helped temper the heat, while the sweet mashed potatoes provided a lovely contrast. The only weak link was the eggplant, which didn't absorb much flavor and felt unnecessary. The dish delivered a bold, Thai-style spiciness with plenty of layered spices.
Desserts
Chocolate & Banana Fritter
Crispy batter enveloped a luscious chocolate-banana filling, with the banana flavor standing out the most. The soft, slightly stretchy texture of the filling was satisfying, and the dish was complemented by coconut ice cream.
Warm Chocolate Cake with Wild Blueberries
The tiny wild blueberries balanced out the banana caramel sauce beautifully, while the vanilla ice cream added a classic finishing touch.
Warm Normandy-Style Apple Tart
The apple tart had a surprising tartness, reminiscent of hawthorn berries. Among the three desserts, this was the sweetest, but the accompanying lemon ice cream provided a refreshing contrast, making for an intriguing flavor combination.
Overall Impression
Lee stands out for its creative reinventions of familiar Southeast Asian dishes, elevating street food classics with innovative twists. However, the menu leans heavily toward Thai-inspired sweet and sour flavors, which, while individually enjoyable, can feel repetitive when sampled back-to-back. Instead of offering distinct, standalone flavor experiences, each dish builds upon the previous one, creating a sense of flavor overlap.
On the plus side, portion sizes are exceptionally generous--something the staff even joked about, claiming they serve larger portions than other Winterlicious restaurants. Overall, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, and I'd highly recommend giving it a try.
