18 Awesome Orange County Bakeries to Try Right Now

"Since 1995, La Poblana Bakery has been a popular OC spot for authentic tamales filled with pork, pollo, queso, beef, pineapple, strawberry, and seasonal elote. While the menudo is also popular at the bakery, most people order the tamales along with an assortment of pan dulce. The chocolate conchas and the CD-sized rainbow sprinkle galleta are kid-friendly favorites." - Jenn Tanaka

Tried the bakery, not restaurant. Welcoming atmosphere, friendly and kind service, tasty baked goods. They lacked savory options. I tried cookies with jam and a sweet bread that resembled a scone. I'll return to try more!

Alberto R.

Google
Amazing little shop I use to come here when I was a kid many years ago visiting back the food & staff are the same so hospitable and friendly food is very nostalgic taste very much the same delicious food

Emily M.

Google
Me and my big brother came here, it was honestly great. Food took a minute to come out but it was definitely worth it. we tried the pambazo and burrito. Absolute buss. Definitely they support this small business, they’re great. They only speak Spanish tho, so keep that in mind.

Google
MI GENTE!! DO NOT SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS!!! WOW $4.50 for a SINGLE TAMALE. I thought, well these must be FIRE tamales for a business to charge that much. I KNEW it was going to be bad when it took almost 10 min to give me 2 beef tamales. Dude 😂 they looked awful from outside the bag. I Just look at the vids. The meat ( or whatever it was ) looked like something they would serve in prison or something you would see in a toilet at a gas station bathroom. I really hope the Orange comm doesn't support this place. It's sad, this was once a hotspot for tamales. I should have read the reviews before going. They are SPOT ON from the service to the food.

Google
For the first time I went in this morning, just a few minutes after they opened. They had their pan dulce (sweet bread) fresh out of their ovens. At first I felt bad, because I bought 16 of them and they were already running low. Twelve were for my fiancé's employees. As I was waiting for my large order of their champurrado, they came out with more. They seem to make a lot of fresh bread/pastries daily, so in the end it wasn't that big of a deal. The cashier was nice and the wait wasn't long at all for the champurrado. I will definitely coming here for more and hopefully try their tamales next time.

Arturo P.

Google
The tamales are good but small. We liked the pan dulce too but the variety was limited.

Google
Heard about this place from a friend. Yummy champurado and delicious cookies. Not to fond of the tamales but trying the masa soon and making my own tamales

Paul L.

Google
Bakery with no loafs of bread? Only Mexican pastries. Place look dirty and cluttered. Not even greeted by clerk, just a weird stare.

Yelp
This place deserves all the stars in the world, my go to for breakfast and it always hits the spot!! If you haven't checked it out already do so after reading this review you will not regret it!

Alejandra E.

Yelp
Food is ok, but the prices are exaggerated. A tamale is $4, which you can find between $2 to $3 anywhere else. The prices are extremely high. You can get better items at another place.
google avatar

Ali E.

Yelp
Best tamales in town. Great masa and meat ratio. You won't be disappointed. Worth every penny

Yelp
We were in the area and craving pan dulce/tamales. Found this one and wanted to try it out. We got some pan dulce and a couple tamales. Pan dulce was alright not my fave. As far as the tamales go they are a 7/10. The flavor is good and plenty of sauce and chicken. Only thing is, for the price they are rather small. We've tried tamales from other places and probably they're around the same price but double the size. Would I go here again?! Not sure I guess only if I'm in the area but wouldn't drive there just for the bread and tamales.

Yelp
Disappointed with their beef torta de tamal. Barely any meat and flavor. They didn't toast the torta bread at all. I think they just threw the whole sandwich in the microwave with the sad tamale squeezed in between. HIGHLY NOT RECOMMEND. Also got the pambazo and it was mostly beans. Bread also NOT toasted. Lacking flavor as well. Chicken tamale $3.50 each. Was ok, nice that it was very hot but that's about it, nothing special about flavor, standard tamale size. Customer service is awkward. Wanted to try their breads but I can tell they weren't good and they are using the wrong dough mixture for the types of bread they have. They are using the same dough for almost all the sweet breads there. For example the croissant texture is not what it's suppose to be at all thus already looks stale. Overall, wouldn't be back. This business seems to lack passion in their work and cutting corners.

Beep C.

Yelp
Tamales are $4 each...which adds up quickly when feeding a crowd. We got 4 each chicken, pork and strawberry. The chicken was moist and tasty, pork was ok...strawberry wasn't what I wanted. The strawberry was solid masa...not at all moist with any fruit. Our chickens liked the strawberry tamales!! I did buy a dozen cookies ($1 each) with egg wash. THOSE WERE A HIT!!! Gentleman behind the counter was delightful! He patiently explained how to steam the tamales to retain moisture rather than a microwave. He also recommended the yummy cookies. I'll go back for those crunchy, not too sweet cookies!!

Yelp
By far the best tamales in town. The owners are also wonderful and sweet. Their pastries are fabulous. The cutest little bakery.

Yelp
I love small businesses and they can either be a hit or miss. This one is definitely a hit. The service was great and the food was yummy.

Yelp
Placed an order for 40 panbasos on 10/24 to be picked up 10/26. When I arrived on 10/26 to pick them up the lady in the front tried looking for them. After calling her boss she comes back to tell me " my boss said she forgot to make the order and she's sorry" . I was so upset because she had no solution and there is nothing I can do with her "sorry" . panbasos are hard to find in large quantities if stores even carry them . I asked for my money back because I would have to find a store to buy them at. She replied she didn't have the key to the register . She told me I would have to wait for her boss to arrive. At this point I'm very upset because my order wasn't made and I know I will have to drive to several stores to find panbasos yet alone 40 of them . I end up finding a solution for her and tell her that after she charges the costumer who was waiting in line she could leave the register open and give me my money back . She was hesitant at first and seeing how upset I was she called her boss and finally gave me my money back . Will not be coming her again . Very unprofessional and they don't care about their mistakes .

Yelp
Year round tamales... yes please! Pick your flavor and have it steamed while you wait. I love to stop by and enjoy a delicious, authentic tamale (or three) whenever I'm in the area. This is a pick up your tamale-and-leave, hole in the wall, treasure type of place. It can get very busy at Christmas. Prepare to wait if you show up in December but otherwise it's pretty easy to get in and out of here. I always enjoyed meat tamales and was not big on the sweet ones until I tried theirs. All the flavors are amazing. Don't miss out on these!

Trina M.

Yelp
I sent my husband to go order tamales for Christmas Eve because they have always had the best tamales and always fresh and ready to serve. He called during the week and they told him he to do it person. So he went and he asked about ordering and one of the girls got the manager and he came out with a bad attitude and very rude telling my husband it would be $70 for 16 tamales, cash only and pick up is on 12/20 and we would be getting FROZEN tamales. He told my husband that we need to defrost the day before so we can it. When my husband called to see what I wanted I told him no. I love to support small businesses but only when they are good and friendly to the people they serve, prices are reasonable and if I'm going to pay the amount they want I want fresh food NOT FROZEN. So I sent him to Moreno's Bakery for our tamales! No more La Poblana for me and I will be telling others as well.

Yelp
Best tamales in Orange County( probably best in California)! La Poblana Bakery is a very small bakery just down from the orange circle, off Chapman. My favorite is the chicken with tomatillo sauce(green sauce). They also have carnitas and shredded beef with red sauce. It is a Christmas tradition to serve tamales at our home. I love the ratio of masa to meat from this bakery. The owner started selling tamales at the base of Orange hill and then move to this bakery. I think she has been making tamales for over 30 years. You need to order ahead if you want them for the holidays. Everyone is so kind at the bakery. You can also pick up sweet breads, flan and cookies. But don't miss out on the very best tamales!

Anthony A.

Yelp
They raised their prices and just added extra masa on the tamales on top of that I found a hair in it, very disappointing service and food just isn't the same
google avatar

Crawford R.

Yelp
Cheats you on the weekend! 27 for a dozen tamales A couple days later it's 36 for the same dozen They cost MORE on the weekend is what the worker said. So nine dollars more because that's stupid. Can't support a local business that does not respect their customers. What a rip off! Might as well buy Trader Joe's $7 for 4 tamales.
google avatar

Johnny U.

Yelp
They keep raising the prices and the tamales are getting smaller and smaller. Nobody wants diet tamales. They finally take cards now.

R S.

Yelp
I have been coming to this little hole in the wall for tamales & menudo since I can remember. Located just West of the Orange Circle on Chapman Ave. past the train tracks. Closed on Mondays, and 'til 5pm during the week, but close earlier on the weekends. This is a pick up and go spot, but there is one little patio table with 2 chairs outside. All of the tamales here are the best I've had outside my grandmothers kitchen...seriously. The menudo too...just the way we would make it at home. This is really the only place I will order multiple tamales to last me a few days. They're thick with lots of sauced meat in the center, and totally decently priced. Lots of pan dulces & desserts to pick from too. If you've been here before, you'll remember that it used to be a cash only establishment, but since covid, they now take cards...finally!

Yelp
Came in at 2:17pm today and these girls were saying how they were closed...they were so rude. Maybe the new owners don't care about that. Change your hours then, as I drove from Riverside.

Amelia C.

Yelp

Carla G.

Yelp
So today I called in an order for 1 medium menudo with pata and granos, the woman told me my total and it should be ready in 15 min. I showed up maybe 20 min later & they didn't have my order and they weren't sure who took my order. But they said I can order again but I'd have to wait 15 which is a little frustrating because I was on my lunch break but I didn't make it a big deal. So I ordered the same thing and the person said they no longer had pata. When I receive my order there was no granos and they don't give you a spoon or tortillas which I thought was always a given anywhere I eat menudo at. The menudo was bland, definitely not worth all the hassle.

Yelp
Everything there was great especially the customer service. I would highly recommend.

Yelp
Local bakery had very fresh, moist, and tasty Rosca de Reyes. Ready to pick up with their friendly staff.
google avatar

Terry T.

Yelp
Love the fresh pastry, authentic, and great service. Tamales we love! Favorites are conchas, polvorone. Tamales are great especially love the jalapeno and cheese. Very spicy.!

Patricia E.

Yelp
La Poblana Bakery is amazing!!! I have eaten food from here on separate occasions and I can truly say that their food is not only authentically Mexican but delicious! Their tortas de jamon are my favorite meal on the go. Their aguas frescas are also wonderful--nothing artificial about them and just the right amount of sweetness. I have also tried their conchas and they are so moist and fluffy. For Halloween, I got custom-made conchas with a pumpkin design. They were a hit with my friends and family. My favorite thing of all is their champurrado!!! Best champurrado truly anywhere! I get their champurrado in their largest cup possible, it's that good. The staff is really friendly and I really like that there is free parking, since a lot of places near the circle don't have any. For me, this place is 5 stars. I will keep going and will keep recommending.

Yelp
I was in search of a great authentic place I could get tamales. My co-worker referred me here and I will forever be Thankful! The chicken & pork tamales are super delicious. That's all I got this visit, but I will definitely be back. Not to mention I was suprised with the amount of variety and very fresh bakery breads, cookies, cakes, ect. I can't wait to go back and try a little bit of everything else. Also just a little side note if you call in your order ahead it will be ready when you get there. That's what I did. If you need a large order especially if you need them for the holidays call your order in early. They had a sign saying: Taking Christmas tamale orders starting the last week of November and I was politely warned to order early because they do run out.
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
This morning I was looking for some fresh bread and a sandwich. I've passed this spot for years and never tried it. You grab a tray and snag whatever you like bread or pastry like a cafeteria. There is not a bakery number and service counter. Unless you want to order a sandwich or variety of soups and tamales. Today I was very happy with my Torta with Jamon. The bread and ham were fresh and the service was quick and friendly. I also had a few pastries and the hot corn chocolate drink the Champurrado. It was my first time checking it out and I thought it was delicious. There is no fluff here just a great sandwich and sweet service. I could taste the happiness in everything I ate.
google avatar

Ronald E.

Yelp
Came to get our usual Christmas tamales. they are as good as always but they have gotten VERY pricey for tamales vs their local competition. You can drive an extra 2 miles and get very good ones for a dollar less each. Being fair though their tamales are larger with more very tasty filling. Guess you pay more and you get more

Yelp
The Best when it comes to menudo to go and the sizes of that are truly reasonable a medium is $5 tortillas +50 cents. Grabbed two conchas and my dad loved them! That alone is a really good sign! This fine mom and pop operation reminds me of what Santa Ana used to have years ago. Does any one remember "Los Grandes" on Grand st in front of our Lady of Guadalupe? Ok just in case you just showed up I will give you a sound bite. It is a simple set up because it is ONLY CASH and then you get your order. Basically you take it home or most it is to go! The menudo meat was crunchy like it is supposed to be. Great flavor and no extra charge for hominy. Again, like it is supposed to be! To me this reminds me alot of what "Los Grandes" used to be. When I walked in Sunday morning for my menudo run their was no line and only 3 folks waiting for their order. Only one cashier and her English was acceptable. pros, Lots of easy parking BEST Pan Dulce in Orange! Great menudo Fantastic tamales cons nowhere to really eat take out only CASH ONLY no bathrooms My conclusion; In my many experiences coming into this fine mom an pop operation. It can get really busy during rush hour. Basically it is a Mexican bakery and for most it is just to take out. Great if you ask me especially, if you do not feel like cooking! This is one those classic stops that you should, have on your check list! I am a true fan and I love Poblana! Additionally, I only really drop in twice a year and that is during fall. The Menudo is perfect!

Tony A.

Yelp
The best menudo in Orange County, maybe SoCal. Call your order in to save time. Tamales by the dozen are go tos for work lunches
google avatar

Alexis V.

Yelp
I used to love and always recommend la poblana, I'm really upset this place really went downhill with new management. There's a line to wait to go into the shop but workers don't seem to care if people just cut in front of the whole line. We ordered bolio, 2 menudos and 2 tamales so unless you're buying bread be ready to wait a long time for your food with the male owner just taking no regard of the order that the food should be given out to guests. Waited almost 40 minutes with others who ordered after us getting the same or more food already given their order. Our food was sitting there for a long time too til it was called.

Patty G.

Yelp
Really dry salty tamales, this place was our go to for the longest time. Unfortunately owners changed and Food and service has gone down so much. Menudo wasn't cooked all the way (so hard to chew) We asked for no pigs feet and it was as if we asked for extra. Unfortunately won't be back.
google avatar

Ashley Y.

Yelp
I love this bakery! Delicious tamales, puppy jello and polvorones! What else can you ask for!??? All their food taste 10/10, if you have a hispanic love. Anytime I'm craving tamales or yummy bread, I come here!
google avatar

Melinda L.

Yelp
This is the first spot I was introduced to the famous Champurrado. A Mexican-style hot drink that's thick, creamy, and chocolatey that just warms you on a cold morning. And if you're into sweets for breakfast, every Mexican pastry item is available here, from the sweet breads to cakes and rolls. There's this coconut cake that I get all the time that I really enjoy. They also make tamales here, and it's pretty fresh. The chicken and beef ones are pretty good. If you want to try the sweet ones, go for it! Mornings here can be pretty busy, so prepare to hold your trays if you're grabbing some baked goods, until you get rung-up. Oh, and this is a CASH ONLY place...so, bills, bills, bills!
google avatar

Imara S.

Yelp
The place is super cute. Fully stocked with baked sweet bread. I had been looking forever for my favorite Mexican sweet, sevillano and they have it. Service is fast and the lady that helped me was very kind. I know I'll be visiting again when I'm in town.
google avatar

Stephanie N.

Yelp
We came in today 11/22/2020, pick up some pastries and two and half dozen of the tamales. A dozen pork, and chicken and half of the cheese and jalapeño tamales. My hun's family has been coming here for ages! Definitely worth the trip! Sorry no pictures of the tamales but definitely better than the supermarket and far better then some homemade ones! Will definitely return and a must support small business! Thanks!

Olivia M.

Yelp
Not sure if they changed ingredients for the sweet bread. It use to stay fresh for a couple days. Now your lucky if it taste fresh the next day. It's hard and dried especially in the middle. I thought I just got a bad batch the first time. I went on a Friday morning the bread was still warm. In the evening the middle was already hardening.

Yelp
I've been in search of tamales in the OC area for awhile. I tried a few places that didn't make the cut. I asked for recommendations from my co-workers and they all told me La Poblana is pretty good. This bakery is located on the corner of Chapman/Pixley in the heart of Orange. From the outside, it looks like a home that was converted into a family owned business. The inside is fairly small with no dining area. There are a few tables in the front if you want to eat there. When I walked into the bakery, I was greeted by a very nice lady. My main purpose was to get those tamales. So I ordered a dozen: pork, chicken, and cheese/chile tamales. They are $1.85/piece. No sauce or salsa available. My fave ~pork tamale: most flavorful and the masa was not dry. The shredded chicken wasn't too bad. Chicken is the healthier option but lacked flavor. At least the chicken was tender. I didn't like the cheese/chile one that much. I also got some cinnamon sugar mini cookies. It was so good!! They have other Mexican pastries and drinks too. I would be back for the pork tamales! They take CASH only and close very early by 5:00pm.
google avatar

Miguel C.

Yelp
Green chicken tamales are the best here! Super flavorful.. however I don't recommend any of the other tamales, definitely not as flavorful. Wait is usually long, best to call in your order.
google avatar

Robert A.

Yelp
I had a craving for tamales and I read this place was pretty good. I ordered 2 tamales to go. I have to say they were not anything close to what I was hoping they would be. Fist off I couldn't tell which was pork and which was beef. They both pretty much tasted bland and were disappointing.
google avatar

Carol R.

Yelp
I have been coming here since I was a little girl and they never fail me with any tamales or champurrado!! They're so delicious no other place has been able to top them !! Their bread is also delicious especially early morning! I always buy my tamales here for any gathering I will have especially in the winter!! The lady in the morning on sundays already knows who I am she's so sweet!
google avatar

Shane S.

Yelp
...had a 40 minutes train layover while transferring, and was starving. Ruby's Diner was closed, but glad they were as I found this jem of a place. Ordered (3) Tamales: Cheese, Beef and Pork... OMG, they were amazing! Craving authentic great tamales that hit the spot? This is the place.
google avatar

Katt O.

Yelp
I have tried to purchase some tamales from this location for going on the weeks.... each time I arrive earlier and earlier but each time all I am told no tamales.... this time I just got a bad feeling that he is holding on to the tamales for certain customers....'I don't look the part'. I hope I am wrong .... I was in line at 6:30 am and they open at 5 am ... was sold out... previous week he said he would only sell 1 dozen per customer... oh well I still say I hope I am wrong about my feeling
google avatar

Monica S.

Yelp
It's so sad how downhill this place has gone. Food sucks now, new owner is rude, tamales are almost $30 a dozen, and you wait in line forever for them to say you can only purchase 1 dozen. Never going here again and I've been coming here since I can remember.

Hillary G.

Yelp
Love the tortas de tamal and the puppy jellos are so yummy also the cream cheeses jalapeño filled bread is amazing
google avatar

Albert W.

Yelp
People come here for the tamale. So far for $2 to $2.50, they're good (I've had a lot worse) and they are close to where I live. While you're getting the tamale, I'd get the champurrado (mexican hot chocolate made with corn... I think). Famous: Tamales!
google avatar

Monica M.

Yelp
I was waiting for the metrolink when I had a sudden urge to eat a freshly baked bread. So I stumbled into this bakery and the staff was very friendly and nice. They had quite a selection of bread. My favorite was their cuernos, it was so soft and delicious. There dark coffee was very good. If you're out there waiting for the metrolink, I highly recommend you to stop by at this place.
google avatar

Delfino V.

Yelp
Old school feel of a bakery, walked in on a Sunday, 2 hours before closing and the selection was really bad. Will give them a second chance on another occasion.
google avatar

Anita L.

Yelp
I was craving these triangular cheese cakey things I bought from the panaderia in Santa Ana a few weeks ago and since we weren't far from La Poblana, I thought I'd just pop in to see if they had any. Well, maybe I went too late? I don't know. They didn't have a good variety of stuff on display. Nothing appealed to me. I ended up getting 2 beef tamales to go, they were $1.75 each. Now, I've had tamales from so many different restaurants, shops, even people's homes. The ones from La Poblana had good flavor but sadly the masa was extremely dry. Meh, I was disappointed. The beef had a nice kick to it hence the lovely flavor, but the lump of dried out corn meal just was too hard to swallow -- and I meant that literally! The people who run the place are super nice though, I wish the tamales were better.

Trisha G.

Yelp
Love this place for pan dulce and champurrado!!! I listed hours and they take debit card. Not sure if I got a bad batch but tamales I got Saturday were dry and salty. Not buying those again

Lupe O.

Yelp
I really like the champurrado here, there's been times the consistency of it is a little off but not bad. Their customer service can use some work.
