Junkman's Daughter is a large, locally owned, independent retailer in Little Five Points that sells alternative fashion, costumes and wigs, gag gifts including cards, books, and t-shirts, tobacco products, and other random, assorted knickknacks. The store is aptly named because, well, it does seem like it's stocked with nothing but a bunch of junk. It's been around for over 30 years and is a neighborhood icon.
I've been to Junkman's Daughter multiple times over the years as it's usually one of the more interesting stores to check out while walking around L5P. It's one of those novelty gift stores similar to the Spencer's gift stores at the shopping mall back in the day. There are a lot of unique, crude, funny, odd, and/or adult-themed gifts and items. One random example I saw recently was a button-up shirt with a logo for a made-up XXX production company and a name tag that said "Talent Scout."
If you like to wear spikes, this is the place to shop. They stock many different articles of clothing, shoes, and accessories with spikes on them -- spiked bracelets, spiked necklaces, spiked boots, spiked corsets, spike ball caps, etc. There's a variety of goth, hipster, and alternative wear. To get to the shoe department, you have to walk up a flight of stairs inside a giant red, high-heeled shoe. They have enormously high platform boots that remind me of the pairs the girls in the Cruxshadows, who show up to Dragon*Con every year, wear. There are dressing rooms if you want to try stuff on.
There are geeky pop culture items to be found too. I saw a long-sleeve, stretchy/conforming shirt that looks like a furry brown werewolf wearing a basketball jersey. This is a direct reference to Michael J. Fox's character in the 1985 movie Teen Wolf. They have cartoon, comic book, and video game drinkware such as Adventure Time and Batman beer glasses, Street Fighter IV thermoses, and Pac-Man cup sets.
The tobacco products are located in the back, in a separate area. Sometimes, I've been carded before I could enter. Other times, not. They have a fascinating collection of pipes, hookahs, and other related items. There's a funny collection of pipes that are animal-themed. For example, they have a Hello Kitty pipe, Angry Birds pipe, and panda bear pipe. Some of the hookahs are massive (and expensive). I can't help but picture James Franco and Seth Rogen smoking them.
A great thing about Junkman's Daughter is free parking. That can be hard to find in L5P. However, parking in the Junkman's Daughter lot is not free if you plan to leave the property. There are parking attendants on-hand monitoring the lot and they will charge you $5 if you leave your car in the lot and go elsewhere.
