"Jikoni owner Ravinder Bhogal is of Indian descent and was partially raised in Nairobi ("jikoni" means kitchen in Swahili). And her food tells the story of her geographic biography: prawn toast freshened up with pickled cucumbers, chickpea chips with Bengali-style chutney, a Scotch egg made with venison instead of pork, scallops and congee. British and African influence is evident, but at its core, Jikoni serves up flavor-packed comfort food that transcends culture. The restaurant itself is a refreshingly colorful break from the cool minimalism sweeping the capital’s interiors. The tablecloths are brightly patterned, the cushions are colorful, and the tapestries that cover the walls are loud and cheerful. Like the food, the décor feels fresh and hopeful, definitely a welcome addition to a stretch of town that often seems akin to a one-note French village of bakeries and cheese stores. "

"Chef-owners Ravinder Bhogal and Nadeem Lalani have stopped dine-in operations at the restaurant for now, but has launched ‘Comfort and Joy’ vegetarian and vegan meal boxes which can be delivered to your door. With a choice of six vibrant and delicious parcels from the Punjabi box to the Desi box, Londoners can look forward to dishes such as dhal dhokli, paneer braised in kale, spinach and sorrel and crispy aubergine in Sichuan caramel. The boxes can be ordered and picked up at Jikoni or delivered (within 5 mile radius of the shop). For each box sold, a meal is donated to their charity partner NishkamSWAT to help support the vulnerable in the UK." - Angela Hui

"Meaning ‘kitchen’ in Swahili, Ravinder Bhogal’s three-year old Marylebone gem has been a blast of fresh air in the male-dominated world of Modern Indian. Firstly there’s the imaginatively homely, unapologetically feminine look of pink walls, printed tablecloths and mirrorwork cushions that’s a far cry from ‘gentlemen’s club’ or ‘colonial’. Then there’s the menu full of influences and ingredients from South East Asia, Middle East, East Africa, and Britain. Bhel with sweet potatoes and apples is a marvellous balance of crunchy and tender, sweet and spicy. On a regularly changing menu, there might be delicate courgette flower tempura stuffed with Kerala-style crab and coriander-coconut chutney; and brightly spiced aubergine salad with caramelised (and currently fashionable) foxnuts. Warm, paan-flavoured madelines, served with Kenyan chai, are worth the wait it takes to bake them fresh. While many Modern Indian restaurants are stuck in the era of truffle oil and sun-dried tomatoes, the cooking here pushes the cuisine into the 21st century." - Sejal Sukhadwala

Fantastic, different cuisine. Delicately spiced. Absolutely delicious. We started with olives and pickled vegetables, then we both had a prawn toast scotch egg, followed by scallops then hake. We finished with desserts which were fantastic. The banana cake and pavlova were exceptional.

It’s our second time visiting and we still thoroughly enjoyed our experience in this restaurant. The food was great, as expected, and still just as tasty as when we went over a year ago. Service was excellent for the whole evening as well, with great recommendations and adjustments for dietary requirements. This time I tried the kuku paka and I can see why this is the staple dish, it was so comforting and delicious. I also had the pistachio ice cream for dessert, it has to be the nicest pistachio ice cream I’ve ever had in the UK - almost on par with the ones I’ve had in Sicily! Definitely recommend you to visit at least once, it was an excellent experience.

Fusion interesting brunch menu, with different inventive options which make it stand out from other indian restaurants. Great flavours without being overly spicy and didnt struggle with vegetarian choices. Service with a smile, cannot fault this or the food and drinks. We'll be back to work down the menu!

Google
Fusion of Asian and southeast Asian flavours with a twist. Love the dedication bringing you flavour combinations to the pallet and relaxed convivial atmosphere. Not all dishes worked mainly, under seasoned cous cous and quail was dry but The Hake with Mussels spectacular!! Equally the desserts varied with the almond and bitter orange tart non descript however the banana bread dessert could have eaten all Over again. Definitely going back and would recommend. The no borders approach is admirable and the flavour experiments not always hitting home forgivable. Look forward to the day these independent concerns are profitable enough to show the chains you can avoid all Ultra processed food in the kitchen.

What a lovely dinner! The food is inventive and fun - don’t miss the crispy kale chaat and their take on sticky toffee pudding. The service is superb - the whole staff but especially Mark was exceptional.

Google
One of the best restaurants I’ve been to in my entire life, the food surprised me and was packed with flavor. The dishes were inventive and you can feel the thought and love that went to every dish. The place was warm and felt like an extension of someone’s beautiful home, this was a 10/10 experience.

Google
Amazing food - everything was delicious and an interesting fusion of different cultures. Potentially the best aubergine dish I've ever had. Good variety even just across the vegetarian options. Interesting cocktails too. Service was immaculate. Super friendly and helpful, and made it very special for a celebration. Loved the overall vibe and atmosphere. Very relaxed style without being kitsch, and with African influences dotted around.

Truly beautiful food. Try all the nibbles. We all got the kuku paka and it was so good. Had the banana cake for dessert and it was very special. A hidden gem.

Yelp
Went here after hearing such great things. Had dinner on a weeknight here and they did not disappoint. We got the soy keema bun to split and I got the turnip polenta for my main dish. While we had been advised that the soy keema bun was good to split, it might have done better if we each got our own. The turnip polenta was a great main dish and had a very inventive flavor combination. The interior of the restaurant was curated with everything from the table clothes and napkins to the walls and art having a very cohesive and cozy theme. Would definitely come back here to try some of the other options.

Yelp
This is one of the best meals I have ever had. Absolutely delicious and the staff were friendly and kind. We will eat at Jikoni every time we visit London. I'm certain of that.

Yelp
Interesting mixed heritage dishes from Asia, Africa and the Middle East. All delicious, I loved the chicken. Cozy and relaxing homey ambiance. Service was very good.

Yelp
Went to Jikoni for brunch on a weekend after seeing their insta famous pinacolada pancakes on the gram and it did not disappoint. We had the Okra fries and Scotch egg as appetizers. The okra fries with curry leaf mayo were amazzzzzing. The scotch egg was okay. And for the entree we had the kuka paka with sukuma wiki...It is one of the best curries i have ever had....the meat was so tender and everything in that plate was delicious. For the dessert we had the Pinacolada pancakes ...they were divine.Wish i can have them everyday. Ambience was very much like a warm and cozy indian home with the printed table cloths and pillows and they played very good indian music.

Yelp
We had such a great experience at Jikoni. The service was wonderful especially the manager, Neil. Being the first time eating in the restaurant, Neil patiently explained every single dish on the menu to us. His service extended even after closing. I realized that I left my phone in the restaurant an hour after we left the restaurant. Since I was flying out the next morning back home, Neil waited for me long after closing until I picked up my phone. His kindness and patience really saved me from a potentially disastrous situation!! I highly recommend Jikoni

Yelp
Really beautiful restaurant with a unique and tasty menu. Great neighborhood to wander either before or after your meal. Will definitely be on my repeat list of London restaurants.

Yelp
Jikoni? More like JikoNo-thanks I've been Yelp Elite several years now, and typically visit Michelin star restaurants 2x times a week. Have dined everywhere from Arzak to Noma. Those are my creds. In short, Jikoni = Just Atrocious Service + Clueless waitstaff and managers + So-So food! Two thumbs down, way down! My boy cousins took me there for my birthday this evening. Since we could not get a table at a later time, we were booked for 6:30. Even when we booked the table, the person on the line said we would have to "eat fast" as they would need the table back by 8:30. Reasonable request, I guess, but weird way to put it! But when we asked to add another person to the table they said, "that would be difficult, because you would take longer to eat, as there would be more people, and we need the table back by 8:30". As if, we would be taking turns eating sequentially. without overlapping each others' "eating time". What drivel When we arrived, on time, at 6:30, no sooner had we sat at our table, did the server, who also is the restaurant manager start hounding us to place our orders. We hadn't even said our hellos to each other and caught as some of my cousins were in town from the US OR for that matter placed our drinks orders. It was mentioned that it was a birthday dinner, yet she kept hounding us to place our entire order (starters, mains etc.). What manners! In the meanwhile, another table of mixed company was sitting there waiting for their entire party to arrive, and that took 30 mins. They were not disturbed by the manager one bit. Instead all attention was devoted to shooing us away as soon as possible. Did it have to do with the fact that we were 5 Asian males (without partners, spouses who happened to be traveling this weekend)? Who know, what entered in their bird brains? Although, everyone at the table is perfectly respectable (e.g. MBAs from top schools, finance professionals), and I myself live a few blocks from the restaurant in Marylebone. Been a resident for 8 years. But couldn't help feeling that we were unwelcome. Ironic, given we are ethically Indian, and Jikoni is fusion Indian. They screwed up the drink order. When they were serving or clearing plates, they leaned over seated guests, across the table to serve guests seated at the other side of the table. They brought our food out and took it to a different table, then brought it back to ours. Then they asked, "Who had the lamb? Who had the sloppy joe?" This ain't a diner in Arkansas, darlin'. Which hospitality school did you go to? This is basic service etiquette! And did I mention that they kept rushing us, and not in an attentive way? When I complained to another manager, she first incorrectly accused us of being 30 minutes for our reservation. When I called bullshit she said, that we didn't place our orders for 30 mins after being seated. Also, bullshit! And, when I mentioned that it was rude for servers to keep rushing us or to be leaning across the table to clear dishes rather than going around, she had the impertinence to say "Are you telling me how to do me job?" She actually said that to a paying customer, and I asked her if she had heard what had just come out of her mouth, and whether a job in the service industry was the right one for her. At no points were the words "sorry" or "how can we make this better for you" uttered. Only defensiveness, excuses and downright idiotic justifications, to the tune of, "We need to turn tables". The owners should FIRE the current managers and waitstaff and start all over again. Its clear they've been incentivized to turn tables at the cost of customer service. All, said we were done 30 mins before our table was due back, and walked out in a huff. Really spoilt my birthday dinner and a reunion with my cousins who had flown in from the US. Oh and the food was barely eh! Just plain ol' gimmicky. Some restaurants think that if they get a Marylebone address, they can act all snooty and uppity. This is a classic case. Would highly NOT recommend that you spend your money here (not inexpensive either). Places like Cinnamon Club, Saffron Summer, Dishoom, Chai Ki and Roti Chai are much better options, IMHO. And the service there is always A+

Yelp
I like the decor at Jikoni but I hate it at the same time. It's modern but with a grandma twist. I loved the pop out bird cards along one wall. I hated the table clothes and pillows which felt unnecessary and fussy. But you come here for the food. It was very good, albeit very pricey. We started with a prawn toast scotch egg which was a soft boiled quail egg covered with a thin layer of puréed prawn, breaded and fried. This was delicious although I'm not totally sure the banana ketchup worked (although it was also delicious). The main drawback for this tiny tiny starter was its big big price. At £7.50 a piece, it was a steep mouthful of food. Next up, the cauliflower popcorn which was small florets deep fried, topped with thin slices of red chile and tempura green chiles and served with an Asian dipping sauce. I loved the crunch and texture of this dish although I didn't think the dipping sauce really worked as it was too strong against the cauliflower. The squid was delicious and nicely charred and came with small pieces of Jerusalem artichoke. This was a very nice dish but again at £12.50, a bit on the small side. We shared the spiced scrag end pie which was a curry-fied version of shepherds pie. This was yummy with just the right kick. You could imagine eating this on a rainy day, curled up on the sofa with the fire going. Ultimate comfort food! One of our highlights was our waiter, Ryan. Friendly, attentive and chatty at just the right moments. He was fabulous and a great reminder that you CAN get great service in London. Overall, we had a great meal but the portions are very small given the price tag. I would have liked to have seen a bit more food!

Yelp
Delicious and unique flavors. So many interesting spices. Salty but you won't mind because of all the interesting flavors. It's Indian/African. Have the chicken and the okra fries. And the banana cake was amazing. Cozy and laid-back, informal atmosphere. They were understaffed so the service was pretty bad actually, but it didn't spoil our enjoyment.

Yelp
I don't know what happened. First time was great. This time service was just atrocious. No one vet came to clear the plates. No one came to offer menus. We had to chase some one down for every little thing. At the end we waited 15 minutes with all the empty plates on the table for dessert menu. Finally gave up and asked for the check. Maitre'd always acted like he had something better to do. He said okay, and never came back with the bill. So had to chase someone else for the bill. I feel bad for the proprietress. Front of the house needs a total overhaul!
