"This 400-acre private island retreat off western Panama is an exercise in tropical, barefoot chic, with eight design-forward beachfront casitas and one six-bedroom villa (renovated in 2023), all fringed by empty beaches and jungle foliage. Each casita sits on a private swath of sand with furnishings etched from washed-up driftwood, a highly Instagrammable front porch swing, an oversized net hammock, and a fully outdoor bathroom that includes a tub in the sand. At the sole restaurant and bar, half- and full-day guided activities are announced on the chalkboard every evening, from snorkeling trips to wildlife hikes to visits to nearby coffee farms. There are also daily on-site activities such as cocktail-making classes, or the option to explore this paradise on your own (marked trails and a continuous shoreline help). Another standout of this property is its price point. While many private islands require the deepest of deep pockets, rates at Isla Palenque begin at $980 per couple per night in low season, inclusive of the roundtrip boat ride in and out from Boca Chica (the launch point on the mainland), activities, and meals (but not alcohol)." - Paul Rubio

"Isla Palenque Why we love it: A private island resort where guests can truly disconnect The Highlights: - Just eight casitas and 400 acres of nature - A strong commitment to sustainability - A hyper-local culinary program The Review: Off the Pacific coast of Panama, near the border withCosta Rica, floats a lush island that indigenous people dubbed Palenque, or “sanctuary.” Once home to an ancient, pre-Columbian community, the island stood empty for hundreds of years—save for the all the wildlife, birds, and flora—until Ben Loomis arrived. For five years, the architect and designer lived on site, sleeping in a hammock by night and getting to know the land by day. Eventually, he put both his background and love for nature to use by creating this private island resort, dedicated to the principles of sustainable luxury. There are just eight beachfront casitas and one Villa Estate on the 400-acre island, so privacy is a given. Each of the 650-square-foot casitas has direct beach access, an outdoor tub, organic bath products, daybeds and hammocks, artisan-made furnishings, and a mini-bar stocked with local juices, snacks, and beers. Standout amenities include binoculars, a yoga mat, and a meditation cushion, plus a water bottle to use around the resort; Wi-Fi is free, but “island speed.” In addition to the main beach that fronts the casitas, guests have access to six other sandy stretches, along with nature walking and hiking trails, a main infinity pool, a spa, and complimentary use of kayaks, snorkels, and paddleboards. Meals are full of fresh, sustainably sourced ingredients and vibrant Panamanian flavors; rates include three meals a day, along with snacks and non-alcoholic drinks. An Island Foraging experience brings you closer to the culinary process as you learn to fish using ancient techniques, pick goodies from the island’s orchards, and hunt for wild ingredients along rainforest trails. Off-island excursions like whale watching, island hopping, and more can also be arranged, but with the run of a place like this, it’ll be hard to leave."

I visiting this island ahead of Christmas with my two daughters (9 and 11). It was the best hotel I’ve ever stayed experienced. The design and the details are incredible, but the natural beauty of the island is over the top. The service and food were amazing. We ate the most delicious ceviche of our lives on the beach every day. The excursions were all fascinating and the wildlife is remarkable… and managed in a way that leaves almost no footprint. We will 100% return and I honestly can’t stop thinking about it.

The only sour note was when we arrived at the resort at 1.00 and were told if we wanted lunch we would have to pay for it, or if we waited till 3.00 when our casita would be ready it would be included. We have never heard such a thing in a luxury resort, but the manager sorted it out and we were given lunch while we waited for our casita. Apart from that our 4 nights were perfection. The casita was so lovely with every possible sitting and lounging arrangement outside, and a delightful outside bath under the trees. It was cleaned “like magic” while we ate breakfast - we never saw any housekeeping staff! Milk in the fridge for making coffee. Drinks and packets of snacks in the room included. Laundry came back quickly. We did some of the included guided hikes and an early morning birding walk and found them very enjoyable. Lovely sea swimming in such warm water and soft sand underfoot. When the tide went out a bit we enjoyed long beach walks round to the next bay. The food at each meal was really delicious, and a good choice of local dishes and European on the menus which rotate every 3 days. Very sorry to leave!

Isla Palenque is phenomenal. The island is beautiful with incredible beaches everywhere, lush jungle covering most of the island and numerous islands dotting the horizon. Given that the resort has left most of the island undeveloped and there are so few guests, it often feels like your own private island with a very comfortable, air conditioned room and staff at you beck and call. The food was delicious every meal and the service impeccable. You can do as much, or as little as you want. Our family wanted to kayak so the concierge arranged a private trip for us one morning with breakfast waiting for us when we returned. We also hiked down the beach, over a hill and ended up on another pristine beach that looked like it had never been touched. Sunset is particularly spectacular and the perfect time to sip a drink while relaxing. This may be my favorite resort ever and I hope to return someday. I do wish that some drinks were included with the price, even if it was only local beers and wine. Overall a 5 out of 5 and simply the best.

Our family of 3, 2 adults and a 10 year old, spent 3 nights at Isla Palenque. The island is beautiful. The beaches are amazing and the ocean water is bath-water warm. The food was fresh and delicious, with much of the fruits and vegetables grown on the island. Sunsets are spectacular and at night the sky is filled with stars so vivid you can see the Milky Way. Be prepared to totally disconnect, unwind and be catered to. Kayak first thing in the morning, hike to a completely uninhabited beach or hunt for marine life in the tide pools at low tide. We only spent 3 nights there and wish we had stayed longer. I hope we can make it back some day.

Isla Palenque is a beautiful small resort (only 8 beachfront casitas and a villa) located on an island in Chiriqui. The beautifully designed casitas are right on the volcanic black sand beach. The open air bathroom is a fun touch. The restaurant and pool are just a short walk down the beach. The food is exceptional - wonderful, fresh farm to table options. The staff and service are fantastic. The reason I only give it a 4 is the value. With rates around $600 - $900 per person per night, I do not feel like I received good value. At these rates, it feels excessive to be charged for alcohol and activities. These should all be included in the rates. We arrived in the morning (prior to the official 3:00 pm check-in) and were charged extra for lunch (there are a limited number of flights into David so arriving in the morning is somewhat unavoidable). There is also an extra charge for the transfer to and from the airport which really should be included and pretty much everyone is arriving at the airport. All these extra charges just left a bad taste in my mouth given what I was already paying to stay at the resort. But otherwise, a lovely experience.

We had a great experience at the resort. The staff was wonderful and really made our trip special. Special shout out to Francis for our amazing tours. He is great with kids. My only negative feedback is around charging for lunch on the first day of arrival. It really doesn’t make any sense for a top tier resort and they should just adjust room rates so guests don’t need to worry about it. Almost everyone has to come in early with the flight schedule.

My wife and I really enjoyed our stay at the resort! Our ”room” felt like a summer residence. The food is very good and the staff service-minded. We made some great excursions with excellent guides. If you want to go snorkelling you should choose the long tour. You need to wear sneakers for the kayak tour. If you want to relax this is the place to book!||Bozena and Peter

We went at the wrong time during spring break when most of the resort was booked with family and kids. Because of this, we did not spend much time at the pool since it was usually busy and noisy. At times dinner was noisy also with the groups of family and kids. With that being said this is the nicest resort we’ve stayed at, and we’ve traveled extensively in the Caribbean and Central America. Beach was usually deserted and excellent to walk on. However the waves were rough at times but ocean swimmable. The service, the room and food were outstanding. The jungle hikes were fun and interesting. If you want peace and quiet do not go during spring break. We will return during January, February or May.
