"Despite its address in the bustling heart of Tokyo, Hotel Chinzanso feels like a remote retreat thanks to its location in a 17-acre oasis with historic pagodas, 1,000 camellia trees, and 120 cherry trees; even the locals take refuge in the garden’s leafy paths. Though the spacious Western-style rooms offer every kind of modern amenity, from free WiFi and 24-hour room service to babysitting services and a custom pillow menu, the hotel honors traditional Japanese design with Arita ceramics, n ishijin-ori throws, and ukiyo-e woodblock prints, as well as customs such as tea ceremonies and kimono fittings. There are nine dining options but the best one is Mokushundo, where classic dishes are prepared on hot rocks sourced from Mount Fuji andkaiseki-style in iron kettles."

Serene and tranquil oasis. Service is exemplary. The team go above and beyond to make sure that every need is met before you anticipate it. A standard in hospitality rarely seen anymore. Rooms are generous and elegant. Food was delicious. Gardens are something special. We stopped here before we left. Next time we will visit again!

My review isn’t about the hotel itself, but about its beautiful garden. We visited just to explore the garden and take in the peaceful atmosphere — and it didn’t disappoint. The grounds are large and nice for walking. They feature an old shrine, a restaurant, and a delightful light show at night. This made our visit truly special. We also came hoping to catch a glimpse of some fireflies. While there weren’t many, we did manage to see a few, which added to the magic of the evening. The highlight for us was the light show. It was a beautiful and memorable experience. Highly recommend if you're in the area!

A Dreamlike Stay at the Most Elegant Hotel in Tokyo Our time at Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo was nothing short of unforgettable. This is silent luxury at its finest—elegant, refined, and deeply serene. From the moment we arrived, we felt the utmost care from every staff member, making the experience both personal and exceptional. The magical garden is a world of its own—home to a 600-year-old pagoda, ancient stone lanterns, and winding paths that transport you to another era. Watching the “cloud show” drift through the trees added a layer of dreamlike wonder to an already enchanting setting. If you’re looking for timeless beauty, peaceful luxury, and heartfelt hospitality, this is the place. We can’t wait to return.

Amazing place! I was so overwhelmed by being in Japan finally that I forgot to review this place. But now, a year later; this hotel is epic! We stayed here for 2 weeks and everything is so well taken care of. The onsen is magnificent as well as the swimming pool plus the cute outside whirlpool… not to speak of the gardens, which harbor several amazing restaurants! Definitely worth the $ splurge.

Located in a convenient area of Tokyo and boasting a history of hundreds of years, Hotel Chinzanso is undoubtedly a wonderful place to stay. More than just a hotel, it is also home to a historic garden rich in tradition and beauty. The garden is adorned with lush greenery, flowing streams, and delicate decorative features. There’s nothing more delightful than enjoying a relaxing breakfast while taking in the serene views of the garden.

Top class hotel and staff. The hotel is situated in its own private gardens with a Shinto Shrine along with a waterfall and lakes. There are many dining options and the bar i tried was great. The spa facilities were incredible too. The pool and saunas were perfect temperature. There isn’t much to see or do locally by the hotel but there is a handy bus stop outside for a quick transit to the Yamamoto Line. In Tokyo that line gets you anywhere you need more or less. Although the hotel pictures make the decor seem very chintzy and dated, in reality it works well and is very classy. This has to be one of the best hotels in the city. The staff are very highly trained and exceptionally polite and helpful. The suite upgrade is worth the money. Access to the executive lounge brings food and snacks and also alcoholic drinks from lunchtime. The room was enormous although no dining table. I would return without hesitation. Superb.

I am so glad that I decided to begin my two-week adventure in Japan at Hotel Chinzanso - Yes, it is a splurge, but a worthwhile one. Traveling solo to visit with my daughter who is an exchange student at nearby Waseda University (12 minute walk), it was an oasis at which to shake off the jet-lag and be pampered a bit before a busy travel schedule. I spent 4 nights at this property, enjoying the beautiful gardens and onsen (I didn't utilize the spa but it looks fantastic).|Usually, I give a report card for the hotels I review, but since literally every aspect of this hotel is an A+ I really have no need to itemize. Perfect linens, bathroom (complete luxury), shower pressure/temp, storage, lighting, ambiance, service. The bed is slightly firm but I found all to be like this in Japan and it was the softest of all the hotels I stayed in. ||I would like to comment on the location as there are mixed opinions here on TripAdvisor.||This hotel, while not adjacent to any of the most popular and busiest train stations in Tokyo, is not as far as you think from all that Tokyo has to offer. Granted, it helped to have a daughter who knows the buses and trains inside and out. But it only took me a day to figure out that the 61 bus can connect me to just about anywhere I want to go and it stops right at the hotel. At the end of my trip, I chose a hotel near Nihombashi station so that I could have easier access to the Haneda airport monorail and some of the sights I had planned to see nearby including Asakusa. However, if I were ever to return to Tokyo, I’d just stay at Hotel Chinzanso again instead. Frankly, if you have enough funds to stay here you have enough to just take a car to the airport and back and once in a while get the GoTaxi (Japan Uber) if you don’t want to make the bus to train connections. |Gosh I miss this place….

Google
World class hotel, hands down. Staff were extremely accommodating tending to our every need including a room service set up for a late night dessert and coffee with guests. The "mist garden" walk and fireflies observatory was truly special in the evening. Epitome of simple natural wonders in the magical setting on a mountain top. Delightful way to end our Tokyo experience.

Yelp
5 for size, grandeur and service. 4 for location. This hotel is very very grand, traditional, but north of the city. Some cab drivers don't know its location. It has a 17 acre garden and big American style rooms with great views. If you want to walk , remember its uphill back to the hotel the last 1/4 mile. But very elegant and it has 7 restaurants. Most of the food was good. Bon appetit!

Yelp
We had never stayed in a five star hotel before this, our first visit to Japan. The hotel stands nestled on the side of Camellia Hill just north of central Tokyo. It's a majestic structure, outside and in, but any feeling of being overwhelmed by that is quickly assuaged by the attentions of the hotel staff, so it exudes a warmth you may not expect. The rooms are nicely appointed, including slippers and big, fluffy (and heavy) bath robes and pajamas!. The toilet is in a seperate room from the bath, which features a large tub and a large, separate shower. The room seemed larger for the picture windows looking out over the hotel gardens and the city skyline. The hotel garden is beautiful, itself a sight to see in Tokyo and a wonderful, relaxing way to start or end the day. Above all, the hotel staff is very conscientious of the guests and making their stay comfortable. We had a couple of problems (nothing to do with the hotel) that were quickly solved by the concierge services. Finally, the restaurants in the hotel- seperate from the wonderful experience of the tea room off of the lobby- offer delicious food. It's pricey, but you won't think about that when you're eating. There's a workout room available to guests and a pool and hot springs available for a fee. When you leave the pool or gym in the morning you can make yourself a complimentary latte (until 10AM) and sit and relax while you drink it. To quote from a couple of other reviews, staying here is nothing short of an amazing experience, as if Tokyo was not enough, and, yes, the hotel is very busy at all times and they won't miss you if you don't stay here. But you shouldn't miss it. For more, look at the Chinzanso's web site.

Yelp
Chinzanso Hotel Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo There are many beautiful hotels in Tokyo. But the Chinzanso stands out to me with its quiet opulence and unpretentious atmosphere. Located in out of the way residential Bunkyo-ku, about a 15 minute cab ride from Tokyo station from the Yaesu exit. Almost everyone here speaks English well. The rooms are spacious by Japanese standards and decorated with chintz curtains and thick cream colored carpet. The garden is large with lighted pathways and boasts a pagoda and lighted mist show! The concierge staff and in particular Ms. Ikehara, was incredible. Not only was she able to track down an elusive bottle of Hibiki 21 for me ( seriously she did!) she anticipated my needs and had a Black Cat (kuro neko) form filled out and ready to take my luggage to my next destination. Friendly and efficient. There's a comfortable bar downstairs, perfect for a night cap and an Italian and Japanese restaurant upstairs. Comfortable. A peaceful haven in the middle of bustling Tokyo. My kind of place.

Yelp
This four seasons hotel is a gem and it feels like Kyoto in the middle of Tokyo because it sits atop of a hill of its beautiful zen backyard. I heard that Mariah Carey and Manchester United stayed here and I wouldn't doubt it. It's beautiful in the spring when cherry blossoms are in full bloom and aligned with the Edogawa river. They have 2 restaurant cottages in the back entrance from the Edigawa river side. One of the cottages is a stone grill (Mokushundo 木春堂) and the other is soba buckwheat noodles / Kaisen Seafood and premium Japanese style (soba mucha-an そば無茶庵). I tried the soba with tempura for my 20th birth year celebration (Seijinshiki 成人式). I also came here for my friend's wedding and the food was pleasant. They had a trio jazz band that was well suited for the site and the wedding style. Sorry, this is not a review on the hotel. But they do have a direct limousine bus that takes you from and to Narita which is super convenient and comfy. Ofcourse there's a payment but it's much less hassle.

Yelp
We stayed three nights here at the end of a ski trip. It's a beautiful, elegant property with a huge outdoor garden in a nice, quiet neighborhood. Metro stops aren't too close but the walk is reasonable without luggage. We only ate at The Bistro restaurant: our first night there the Japanese restaurant turned us away at 8:30 despite the posted 9pm closing time. At 8:30, all of the other restaurants were closed for new seating. The room was large by Tokyo standards, but we could hear our neighbors chatting in the am. The bathtub sported an old caulk line from a prior design; shower water leaked onto the bathroom floor. Forget the 'onsen.' For one thing, there's a charge for hotel guests to use it, around $15. But, no pre-dinner soak as it is available exclusively to 'members' from 6-8pm. None of this is described in the hotel info folder, so when I showed up in my robe and slippers at 7pm, I was turned away for the second time. It was very busy, they won't miss your business.

Yelp
Stayed here for a couple days while traveling japan. Staff was excellent. White glove service and an absolutely amazing property in the best location. Staying here was nothing short of an amazing experience.

Yelp
Old school hotel situated on beautifully manicured Japanese gardens. One can forget that you are in Tokyo. It is a little out of town though you can get to a subway station in about 10 minutes by foot. Taxi fare back and forth to Tokyo proper can add up. The hotel has a number of on site restaurants that are fantastic. The rooms are clean and large by asian standards and have a smart phone that you can use while you are there - worth it just for the map function. Stay here and experience top notch Japanese service and hospitality that way it likely has been for the last 100 years. Loved it!

Yelp
A colleague and friend in my party aptly said "this hotel showcases everything that's best about Japanese culture." I couldn't agree more. The most welcome of welcomes was received. As icing on the cake - my son, whose birthday it was - was presented with the softest of teddy bears and origami. children's toiletries were sent to our spacious and perfectly appointed large (for any city) room. The bathroom was spacious and reminded me of Wynn in Las Vegas - or Ritz Carlton in Singapore. Room service and dining options, although expensive - were sublime. Quality. Quality. Quality. Location- smack middle of Tokyo but tucked away in peaceful gardens. It felt like an oasis. It is an oasis. I feel a little envy for those who have yet to experience this.

Yelp
This was her choice for recovery and recuperation from jet-lag. Check in with smooth, and we were taken to our 11th floor room, looking south over Tokyo. In the distance we could see the Tokyo Sky Tree. In front of us was the beautiful gardens of the hotel. Both the daytime and the night views are really beautiful from room 1102. After a night of trying to sleep through jet lag, we got up early and breakfast as soon as the restaurant opened. After breakfast we started our course of recovery with a leisurely stroll through the hotel Gardens. They are truly lovely, and a joy to walk through early in the morning. We could feel ourselves relaxing. The gardens are very quiet and peaceful, well insulated from the noise and traffic of downtown Tokyo. After the walk, we enjoyed the indoor pool, with the heated side pools, and the heated outdoor pool. The indoor pool is quite large, and nice to swim in. Her room was spacious, and the bathroom was huge. The toilet was a high-tech Toto model that flushed itself and had a heated seat. The bathroom was fully equipped with all the amenities necessary for morning and evening ablutions.

Yelp
I'd rate it 6 stars if I could. I had an amazing experience with Hotel Chinzanso. When we checked in, we got a free upgrade. City view, enormous bathroom with a deep bathtub, separate shower and heated toilet seats. Service and amenities were unparalleled! There was a tuck in service every night with a little card telling us next day's forecast. The hotel came with a cell phone that you can use to surf the web and make local calls for free. (We could've saved money by not renting the portable wifi at the airport.) We were escorted to our rooms when we checked in. At one point my sensitive skin did not do well with the L'Occitane body wash. They immediately brought a few other ones for me to choose from. My voltage converter blew a fuse and I was not able to use my straightener, for which my hair would be tragically frizzy. When I told the front desk about it, they brought me a curler and a straightener. I mean what hotel has those?!? My husband and I ate the Japanese breakfast and the selection buffet at Miyuki. Both were delicious! Service again was exceptional. We watched a guest accidentally spill a glass of wine at the table next to us and three seconds later, literally three wait staff came to the guest's rescue. The garden at the hotel was also beautiful! Great stroll after breakfast. I felt more zen just walking through it! I cannot say enough good things about the hotel! The only complaint I may have was that it was a walk up and down the hill to get to the Metro. But the weather was nice when we were there so we did not mind it. A few times we took the taxi outside the hotel when we were too tired. There's always one outside. Unfortunately Tokyo is kind of far away from Narita. We took the Airport Limousine. We bought the bus tickets at the airport. Ride takes about 2 hours but it brings you straight to your hotel.

Yelp
Stayed at the Chinzanso Hotel last month (October 2019) visiting from USA. Hotel rooms are beautiful and clean. Spacious bathrooms and easy to adjust lights and curtains from a switch next to the bed. We had a great view of the city from our room. Train station, convenience stores, and restaurants all walking distance from the hotel. The hotel is in Bunkyo City which is nice, because you're close to the city but this area is very quiet and calm.  The garden is free and open to the public. Even if you're not staying in the hotel it's worth seeing and there are some historic landmarks in the garden.

Yelp
We stayed here for two nights. The service is fantastic and the hotel is conservative yet elegant. You can tell this "used" to be a Four Seasons hotel. Our room was nice and spacious- and the cleaning service is extremely detailed--I had left my jewelry out in the room one day. And realizing I forgot to put it on as we were sightseeing, I became worried it would go missing or get misplaced as I casually left it (5 rings) on the table. We come back to the room and I see a small cardboard box (decorated with Japanese art) with my jewelry inside. Was so thoughtful of the cleaning service! There were other details that we noticed showing us they cared about our stay here. The man in front of the hotel each morning helped us each day with our travel arrangements. We had wanted to explore like a local (taking trains, subway and walk around). He had helped us with our journey by giving us an idea which way to station-walking directions or if a taxi would be a better choice. The location of hotel is between subway station Meijiro (quite a walk but good for active tourists) which takes you to major areas in Tokyo (Shinjuku, Harajuku, Shibuya). The train station closest to hotel is Edogawabashi which took us to Achihabara. Was a nice stroll (downhill and around) to train station. We got to see a residential area which was clean and quaint. On our way back we ended up connecting/transferring to the subway back to Meijiro station to avoid going uphill. When we were tired we took a taxi to/from Meijiro to hotel which was about $8. Or a bus #61 which was $2 each person- 7 stops from subway station. With our jet lag and appetite to explore, we only got to visit the garden at night. This garden was very well lit and majestic in the dark and cold weather. We bundled up and roamed around this garden...And took the most beautiful pictures. This is definitely the main attraction at this establishment. Restaurants are expensive; if you want to save money you should get pastries or go to grocery store beforehand. The fitness room, swimming pool and hot springs have free entrance if staying 2 nights or more. Drama: My husband went to get ice and went to the wrong room. As he walked in, the door closed and got locked in a service area. Had to walk down flights of stairs and search for workers to let him out. A young gentleman was able to lead him back in the hotel. As for me, I went to the hot springs to experience relaxation. As I bathed I saw ladies talking in Japanese and glaring at me. As they left in disgust a spa worker came in the hot springs telling me I had to leave. Since I had tattoos, it was against culture to use the hot springs. I gracefully accepted her kicking me out and left embarrassed--hair wet and water pouring out of my ears. My ignorance thought I would be able to get away with my tattoos without discrimination-- after all I was an American tourist in a hotel. -was a Japanese version of a scene with Julia Roberts in the movie Prettywoman shopping on Rodeo Drive- At least I got to experience it for the time I was there...also, it was not the prettiest hot springs area. And if the locals vacationing there did not tattle on me, I probably would have been okay. Overall, this place is a nice getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city for both tourists and locals. Would stay here again... without taking my clothes off in the hotel.

Yelp
i don't think i'd ever revisit hotel chinzanso ever again after what had happened to our reservation and experience here. my mom reserved TWO rooms with two twin beds per room through a travel agent and the hotel only gave us 1 room. the morning after my mom took out the receipt from the travel agent and realized the hotel had made a mistake. she went down to the lobby to reason with the front desk and they would not give in that they had made the mistake. they blamed it on the japanese travel agent counterparts and refused to provide any refunds. we eventually got our refund and got our breakfast and 1 added bed comped after much teeth pulling. this place does NOT live up to the four seasons brand based on service and is at a terrible location. it's so far from everything and not a subway station nearby. the rooms show signs of wear and during the month of december it was far too cold to be outside enjoying the garden.

Yelp
This is one of the best places in Tokyo, which can let us feel the best point of Japan. Here this place, you can feel the change of the seasons very clear, because all the trees or anything are arranged to achieve that purpose. You may think that as you stay here only for a moment, you can't feel it. It is not the case. There are a lot of its signs, or subtle changes, So this won't let you down. But there is a problem. That is, this is not convenient for the train service. There is no trains near here. So you should come here by taxi or on foot, but walking here is not a good choice. Therefore, it costs you more to enjoy here than you imagine. But this is worth it.

Yelp
Stayed here when it was Four Seasons. This place was excellent and really lived up to the Four Seasons brand. The name has changed but the quality is still top notch. Beautiful lobby and rooms are perfectly sized with all the comforts. Bathrooms have some nice and appreciated high-tech amenities. Service is impeccable. If you're on a high enough floor there are great views. This hotel is in a perfect location for catching public transportation. Do not underestimate this hotel, it will please.

Yelp
This hotel has been quite the disappointing experience. It is not a "bad" hotel, and as always the Japanese are the kindest and most hospitable hosts you can imagine... Unfortunately, there are way too many things off with this one over pretty much any other (newer) hotel in Tokyo. First of all, the rooms are stuffy and all furniture and amendments are grossly antiquated. It's like a 70's hotel in DC. Seriously outdated all around. I'll spare you the details, but the word "gaudy" comes to mind. To top that off, the wifi service is TERRIBLE and the staff has a hard time speaking English overall, so asking for help when you need internet for your work is kind of a big deal. As in, not very helpful at all. Finally, the food service is just seriously under par. Especially by Japanese standards. I cannot believe they charge $35 for a so-so omelette and a few mini pastries. Outrageous. And really not that good at all. The sushi at the hotel restaurant, Miyuki, was also just par at best, and I'll not even mention what that cost me. I also had some stomach issues after that meal, but I dare not claim that on the hotel per se, though clearly it did not help in my overall opinion. Yes, Tokyo is expensive, but nothing as outrageous like this place. Any other 5-star hotel will offer far more value-for-money. Yes, the garden is special and nice, but you do not need to stay here to visit it. In fact, have I mentioned location? This hotel is too far from anything of interest... When in Tokyo, certainly if you're not a local, I very seriously recommend the Grand Hyatt, Palace or Ritz at this rate. Only reason to stay at Chinzanso, really, is if you're over 65 and attending a local wedding. If you think it's worth it because other reviews say the service is good: the sevice is good everywhere in Tokyo!
