The Hobart Bookshop

Month of visit: December 2024 I don’t know much about bookshops, but I think if you are into books, then this place is a must if you are in Hobart. They have unique books, indie authors, and some specific local books. My father, who is a geologist, really enjoyed here, and he was happy to get a rare book related to rocks and geology from here. The place is also cute and Instagramable!

Whenever I go on holidays, I like to try and purchase a book from the local area. A large number of bookstores don't deliver, but The Hobart book shop did. They had a whole table for Tassie fiction and I picked one up. I'm two chapters in and I'm hooked. I'm so glad I discovered a new Aussie author. The staff were so friendly as well. Thanks so much!

I visited here about 5 years ago on a trip from the US. There were some specific local books that I wanted, and when I contacted them from the US prior to my trip they were willing and able to get them for me. The books were waiting for me when I arrived. Just brilliant service. Lovely location and, well, I'm thinking about the place 5 years later with a smile on my face so that tells you how good it is.

I visit this store everytime I'm in Hobart. There is a good selection of books in all major categories. There is also an interesting selection of books about the culture, history, & economy of Tasmania. It is one of my favourite bookstores to return too.

If you’re making a short trip to Hobart, this place shall not be missed. It is a great escape from the bustling Salamanca Market. A great selection of books from indie authors to choose from and a great place to buy gifts for your loves ones during Christmas and special days. The staff helps with ordering books for your loved ones too.

Amazing how much The Hobart Bookstore can cram into such a small space. Unassuming from the outside (and the inside, really), it actually squeezes in a really good range of books. Specialising mostly in new, not used books (which sets it apart from Salamanca's other bookstores), it shines in the area of non-fiction, with plenty of great offerings in science, cooking, gardening, art and history for a starters. The children's section is surprisingly well-populated, there is quite a bit of general fiction too, and the store also offers a couple of sale tables and an interesting secondhand section. The store's point of interest, especially for visitors from out of state, is a well-populated section on Tasmania. Filled with guidebooks, history and the work of local authors, it's well worth a look. The store sometimes runs signings and events for local authors; these are always well worth checking out. I'm not usually a fan of cramped venues, but in this case it works - you never know who you'll strike up a conversation with! Definitely the most hipster-friendly of Hobart's bookstores, and just a lovely independent bookstore in general.

One of my favourite bookshops visited while traveling through Australia. I bought a tote from them while visiting :) The cobbled stone footpaths that surround the bookstore give it a feeling of otherworldly.
