"One of Italy’s landmark hotels, the Grand Hotel Savoia is an icon in the heart of Genoa, a grande dame founded at the height of the Belle Epoque boom by one of the country’s original luxury hoteliers, attracting aristocrats, royals, and other elite international travelers to the renowned port city. Not only was it the first hotel in Italy to have hot and cold running water in private bathrooms (in all rooms), but it was the first in Europe to have a centralized climate-control system. Though its groundbreaking heyday is past, the Grand Hotel Savoia is far from falling into obscurity. The opulent building has been lovingly restored in the seafaring tradition of Christopher Columbus’ hometown, with antique travel trunks, 1950s-yacht-inspired furnishings, and panels of vintage Genoese postcards adorning the rooms. Original accents like parquet floors, Murano chandeliers, and marble columns complement overstuffed leather chairs and carved wooden tables, all contributing to a pervasive sense of drama and history. That drama and history is no more obvious than on the rooftop terrace, where the most discerning locals flock for unparalleled views of the harbor and city—whether that’s over a cocktail or from the relaxing perch of the spa’s hot tubs."

Nice, but not sure it’s a 5 star hotel. First, checked into a room that was clearly NOT what I booked. They were friendly about it, but said the room I booked was not available and blamed “the booking agency” which was Trip Adviser. They did move us to a higher floor, and the room was adequate, but certainly not the room I booked (note I pulled up the Trip Advisor app and showed the room selection). Staff was friendly and room was clean but that is expected. We typically use Marriott, and there is a big difference between a Marriott Fairfield or Courtyard and an actual Marriott or JW Marriott. This hotel felt like a Fairfield. The hotel is convenient to the port, so that was nice. Tack on the room issue and the best I can give is a Fair rating.

Extremely pleasant hotel of the "old" style. Very pleasant art nuveau style interior decor.|Very good location near the train station and easy walk to the old centre of the city.|Large rooms with comfortable beds. However, what seems typical in these types of hotels, one gets two rather small single duvets rather than a good sized double. So not cosy for couples! |The restaurant is worth a visit for evening meals. The buffet breakfast is one of the best you can get anywhere.

Great experience staying at the Savoia. Reception was welcoming and helpful, valet parking, lovely lobby and bar, beautiful rooms, copious breakfast. Our week end was a trip back in time when hotels offered a memorable experience. Oh and don’t miss a visit to the terrace on the 7 th floor, beautiful view. Highly recommended.

Google
What a stunning hotel and lovely welcome from the minute you arrive. One of the oldest hotels in Genoa comes steeped with history from every corner, the hotel is in absolutely perfect condition to modern day features, this is one beautiful hotel with such an amazing grand bar area with piano 🎹 player in the evening. With the main railway just across the road, you straight into one of Genoa's finest hotels. The restaurant is absolutely amazing, beautiful food and menu, with some great local wines of course.

Google
The Hotel Grand Savoia was selected because of its location near the conference site. It turned out to go beyond expectations. The staff was helpful, the room itself was comfortable and well-appointed. The buffet breakfast is a must with outstanding coffee!

Google
Fantastic hotel, excellent facilities and lovely staff.|The location could not be better. It is literally opposite the Genoa Principe main train station making very easy to travel around main attractions like Portofino, Cinque Terre, Milan and Turin. We visited all these very easily…

Google
My expectations are very high if rated a 5 star hotel. Everything must look excellent and service needs to be as well. Service is 5 star but the hotel needs updating to truly be a 5 star accommodation.

We loved every moment of our stay at Grand Hotel Savoia, which exceeded our expectations. The room was spotless and smelled fresh, with a comfy bed. Breakfast was delicious, and the rooftop, complete with a whirlpool overlooking Genoa, was a fantastic bonus. Evening drinks were refreshing, and the spa area was perfect for unwinding after sightseeing. The town center is very close by the hotel. The atmosphere is quite romantic, with beautiful elegant architecture and carefully selected details and art pieces.

Yelp
This hotel is very close to the train station, and after we got off the train and could walk immediately over into this grand hotel, it was a luxury that for sure anyone would enjoy the front desk was helpful and very accommodating when you come in, they actually give you ice cream bars and that was great on this hot summer day, the room was Great it had a really comfortable bed. The bathroom had every amenity that you could need. We had a walk-in shower and a bath tub. The towels were large and great they also had a warming bar for the towels bath robes, and slippers they have a coffee machine complementary and they give you a bottle of water every day. The TV unfortunately didn't have very many channels in English. I don't understand why they don't put the fashion channel on all the TVs in Italy, since this is a one of fashion capital of the world, the roof floor seven where you had breakfast every morning was a nice way to start your day overlooking the city of Genoa the breakfast was plentiful. Anything you could possibly eat including gluten free products more than I've seen in most hotels, and the homemade pies if you stay here too many days, you would definitely gain weight from that the staff was excellent. You got your own food but they did bring you your coffee, we ate dinner in the restaurant which was the same place where breakfast was it was good but I really enjoyed the Trattoria that also part of hotel which was down the street from the hotel and since we already have been up in the morning and having that great view of Genoa, it was nice if you're staying in the hotel, I would definitely recommend eating in both of the restaurants and if you're not staying in a hotel, but you're in the area they are definitely worth your time to try and definitely make sure you get breakfast included because it was delicious I was happy that they had the restaurants in the hotel because the areas a little seedy remember we are in a train station area but it's very good for walking During the day to all the activities that you will be doing when you're in the city I would not hesitate to stay in this hotel again, and I'm going to check the hotel chain for other hotels in Italy

Yelp
Such a gorgeous hotel, with a luxurious and comfortable bar that will make you feel rich and spoiled but surprisingly not break the bank. *Note, I really got the impression that the hotel wasn't keen on photographing areas with other guests present. That's totally fair. However it did mean I couldn't take many photos for Yelp! We stayed one night here while transiting between Rome and Nice. Our room overlooked the square with the Christopher Columbus (boooooo) statue and was literally 30 seconds from the main train station. Our room was beautiful and massive, very comfortable bed and we loved the mechanical blackout shades that blocked sound and light from the busy streets below. The coolest surprise here with the Spa. If your room comes with access like ours did, don't skip out on taking advantage of it. Each room with spa access can book one 1-hour session per day. The spa includes a circuit of hydrotherapy pool, steam room, sauna room, emotional shower (yes really that's it's name), hot stone lounge, and ice sink. Silence is appreciated. There are no phones allowed for the privacy of the other guests which is limited to six people. Bathing suits are required. It was incredibly relaxing and cured quite a bit of travel soreness. Fresh juice, water, and hot herbal tea along with robes and slippers are provided. After our spa visit we hit the bar, it was super swanky and we felt the need to dress up a bit! But it was fun. The bartender provided a very high level of service as we lounged on a gorgeous cream and blue davenport style couch and enjoyed our drinks and nibbles. Breakfast was included and fine, but the buffet felt disorganized and it was awkward trying to order a coffee, there wasn't a dedicated barista so you had to kind of flag someone that was minding the buffet or seating patrons. I would have been happy making my own coffee so this isn't meant to come across as snobbish! But they didn't allow it so it was sort of a problem. If you're in Genoa, I do recommend a stay here. One night was great, two would have been fine, but more than...ehhh. Go venture out to Portofino instead!

Yelp
Decent hotel but we did not feel it was up to the standards of a 5 star hotel. The rooms were clean, the hotel was not very busy. At a 5 star, I expect the staff to be helpful - providing suggestions for dinner, areas to walk to, helping with reservations, etc. Each time we approached the front desk, the staff acted as if we were bothering them and have extremely general answers to any question we asked. The neighborhood surrounding the hotel is not very nice. The first night, we walked towards old town at the recommendation of the front desk. Very quickly, we went from a undesirable area to an even more undesirable area. The second night, we walked about a mile down to the port and that area was pleasant for dinner, etc. Everyone talks about the breakfast...:it was good but not any more extensive than other European hotels. The reason for 3 stars instead of 2 - I did not see many other places in Genoa I would have liked to stay. I think the Grand Hotel Savoia is a good option if you need to be in Genova and you find a room for a decent price.

Yelp
Upon check in we received a free upgrade from the adjacent four star Hotel Continental Genova to the five star sister hotel Grand Hotel Savoia. We were allocated a fifth floor executive suite with view. Our stay was just for 1 night so we did not have time to make full use of the facilities. There is free access to an on site spa, rooftop jacuzzi with panoramic view. The hotel is conveniently located close to Genova train station. Reception staff were friendly and helpful providing directions and a good seafood restaurant recommendation (Soho- near the harbour). Fortunately I asked for the restaurant recommendation as many are closed on Sundays including the restaurant that I had planned on having dinner at, we did however manage to dine at Rosmarino for lunch the next day before heading for Milan.

Yelp
I could quibble about this place - wifi was spotty jacuzzi was closed, some of the room furnishings belong in their next garage sale. But this place is historical, reasonably priced, and well located. And the five star breakfast is just over the top - half the reason to stay here. Oh, an we loved Genoa!

Yelp
Very nice hotel near the harbor, central station and cruise terminals. To be really 5 star the service though needs a tad of improvement: - No help with luggage when checking in - No turndown service - Wifi very choppy in rooms and disconnects ever 3 minutes - At breakfast we were told we couldn't sit on the rooftop terrace as there were no tables. However there were, they simply had not been cleaned up. When we insisted it was finally possible to sit outside. - At checkout had to wait 40 minutes for our car. Told us would be only 10 initially and then again and again that it comes in 5 minutes. Again, nice hotel and the above points did not spoil our stay. If the above improves definitely worth 5 stars.

Yelp
As good as it gets for the small town of Genova/Genoa. Located across from the train station and Christopher Columbus square (he was born here) and 10 minutes from the airport. The city is beautifully old, with large beautiful churches and tight alleyways everywhere. Located on the Meditation Sea the ancient port is busy. Some cruse ships leave from here. The hotel? Fine Italian elegance, located in the middle of everything. I agree with the reviews of all the other 5 star reviews. See the pics! If you're ever in town, stay here.

Yelp
Super nice hotel. Definitely worth the price! Loved everything about it, really, everything! The desk staff were very nice. All the ones we spoke to spoke English and were very nice about our terrible broken Italian. The barman Filippo was a super nice guy, very friendly, had suggestions for drinks, gave super excellent service. Beautiful, beautiful gorgeous hotel. Rooms were just large enough and very clean. There were these really super cool mechanized blinds that rolled down/up and shut at the touch of a button. They blocked out more light than my blackout curtains at home. The bathrooms were nice and the soaps, shampoos and potions left out were all very cool. Many more than the usual skimpy hotel shampoo and conditioner. I swear there must have been seven different things there. The breakfast that was included in our stay was hands-down the nicest free breakfast I've ever been offered. There's a very nice restaurant attached to the hotel as well. As with all hotel restaurants it isn't cheap but the food was well worth it. We had fabulous service there as well. Didn't take advantage of the spa, the kids' area or the workout space but we did use the rooftop deck nearly every day and it was lovely. The hot tubs are not exactly hot, but they were very relaxing and it was simply amazing to look out over Genova at sunset from these terribly romantic hot tubs hung with gauze.

Yelp
I stayed here pre-and post-cruise. I was very pleased with the accommodations and the customer service. This hotel is located very close to the train station and very central to stores, restaurants, and the cruise port. We were able to walk to the cruise port both pre-and post-cruise. Rooms were clean and staff were very personable. As our luggage got lost after our flights into Genoa, The staff were extremely helpful to us in accessing the telephone and getting in touch with the appropriate people. Additionally they were very helpful in giving us directions to the appropriate stores to get our clothing, needed toilet articles etc. both visits or very pleasant and we were very pleased. Breakfast was very good, although I did feel it was a little overpriced. Over all a very good experience here and I definitely will stay again.

Yelp
I was a guest at Grand Hotel Savoia for the TBE conference in October 2012 and I could not have been happier with my stay, with the facilities or with the staff. All were above and beyond. My room was not large but it was very well appointed and very comfortable, the bed provided a truly excellent night's sleep and the bathroom was one I could have luxuriated in for a very long time. It was like a spa. Every day the breakfast was a delight providing the freshest and most delicious food which was not only Italian but would satisfy discerning palates from all over the globe. The WiFi was strong, free and worked everywhere in the hotel that I went. It even worked on the roof when I did a film of sunset -- so that I was able to upload it immediately to my social networks. Also, for guests in Genova traveling in and out via train, the location of the hotel is simply stellar. It's mere steps from the station. One need never hire a cab for anything. It was also in close proximity to the old portion of the city which is the most interesting. Overall, I could not recommend this hotel more highly.

Yelp
Terrible experience at a hotel that we chose because of all the high ratings we saw on other sights. The problems we had were with the rooms and their attitude. Basically: Room 1 - lovely room with a tub. We were happily settled in here, all our stuff arranged where we wanted it. We just decided to leave to explore the city and realised that the door would not close. We managed to convey this via gestures and pigeon Italian to a cleaner nearby who came to have a crack at closing the door herself...but she failed too. A call and a visit to reception led to someone else coming up to take a look at the offending door and also confirming that cleaning ladies and tourists are neither liars nor morons, the door was not for closing! We were told that someone would be along in a couple of minutes to fix it. 20 minutes later (time we could have been exploring Genoa on our single day in the city) my wife decided enough was enough and headed down to reception. It turns out they had no-one available to fix anything and had already assigned us with a new room...just no-one had bothered telling us yet! That would have been too easy. That led us to Room 2.... Room 2 - actually don't know much about this room. It was swathed in darkness heightening our other senses....which were then overwhelmed by the smell of smoke wafting out of our potential new abode. There was actually no-one inside, which was a surprise as the smoke smell was strong and fresh, like we'd walked into a small poorly ventilated pub circa 10 years ago. I'm not a fan of smoke and my wife is even less so. Obviously this was not an sufficient replacement. This is where the receptionist was really beyond all redemption. When we came back downstairs she gave us a look like we had just taken a dump in her front room and said in a most snide voice i have ever heard 'you don't like that room either?'. Now I can accept that the smoke smell could be seen as a preference - it probably wouldn't have bothered someone who was planning to (sneakily...it's actually a non smoking hotel) light up in there many times themselves. I reckon most non smokers would have complained though. Still like i said I can just about accept this as a 'preference', but to suggest (as her wording did) that having a door to your hotel room that actually closes was a matter of personal preference is ridiculous. I got the same look as if I was something unpleasant that she had trodden in when I later required what the check out time was. What a horrible lady, completely unsuited to the service industry. I'm the end room number 3 was fine. It was lacking the bathtub that we been happy to see in room number 1, but we didn't expect that in the first place anyway and so we didn't want to see what was behind door number 4. We enjoyed a good nights sleep and the shower was nice too. Had we got this room to begin with then this might be a 4 star review! We were also able to enjoy the spa that is part of this hotel. Be careful if you are booking here and have the spa in mind though. It is not included in the standard rooms and you could easily miss that fact as we did. You can upgrade to use it for 25 euros per stay...not worth it if you are there for a night but perhaps if you stay a week. Luckily we were able to convince them that the hour plus of our time that we had lost to explore the city because of them was worthy of a free visit to the spa. I think that the very hostile receptionist felt that his was our evil plan all along and perhaps that someway explains, but not justifies, the poor way she treated us (no way - I'm British - I hate complaining. Anything for the quiet life). Unfortunately the rooftop hot tubs that we had seen pictured on the internet, that had very much attracted us to the hotel, were not open (maybe just the summer?). The location of the hotel is very handy for the central station and a short walk along a pleasant street takes you into central Genoa. But obviously I won't stay here again.

Yelp
We stayed at the Grand Hotel Savoia on the first night of our honeymoon. My husband found it, and was so excited about the stay. We were so excited about the spa facilities and the gorgeous rooms. We believed that we'd found a great deal on the room, and were under the impression that the spa facilities were a part of the package. I wish that I could give this hotel 5 stars like the other Yelpers have. This hotel has done so well on Yelp, had an 8.6 rating on booking.com and was the top-rated hotel Trip Advisor. To say that this hotel fell short of expectations is an understatement. We got to the hotel at midday, and were excited to set our things in our room and head out to explore Genoa since we were only there until 11am the next day. Things started off okay... We checked-in at the hotel and were told that to access the spa, it would be €25. I was annoyed by this because how much time could we possibly spend in this place to make it worth €25 per person. The agent explained (and boasted) that the charge was per room, and for the entire stay. That sounded reasonable for a couple staying for multiple days. A big expensive for one night, however. We decided to go explore and then see if we felt like adding it later. We got to the room, and were impressed by the decor. The bathroom had a nice bath, with generous bath samples, including bath salts, gel, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, mouth wash. We dropped our stuff off in hopes that we could go explore. As we were leaving, we realised the door wouldn't properly close and the latch wouldn't lock. Chris found a housekeeper down the hallway, and explained as best as he could in Italian. She fiddled with the door, and saw there was an actual problem, so she called down to someone else. That someone else came to fix it, and then called another someone else. Neither could so they told us to "wait a minute". After 10-15 minutes of waiting, I went downstairs to see what was going on. In all, we'd waited over an hour for something to be done, and the first day of our honeymoon was really not going well. I waited in a huge line to be consistently ignored. Once I finally got to the front, I asked to speak with a manager on duty. Apparently that didn't exist. She asked to know why I wanted to speak with one, and I explained that we only had the afternoon to explore the town. This is the first night of our honeymoon and it was going badly. She explained that they had given us a new room, and acted like that was in some way going way above and beyond. I expected that they should have been apologetic and offered something by way of making it up to us. Nothing came, so I did the cheeky thing and asked. I requested that they add the spa to our room for the trouble. She begrudgingly did it, but acted like it was me being silly. We went up to the new room, and it smelled overwhelmingly of smoke. I went back down to explain that I couldn't stay in that room, and she said "that one won't work for you either?" No. No, it won't, miss eyeroll. I don't believe it's too much to ask to stay in a room that only my husband and I can access via our keys or that isn't a smoke lounge. None of this was my fault. I shouldn't have received the eye rolls and accusatory tone. The third room didn't have a tub and the bed looks smaller, but it was what it was. We explored Genoa for a while, and then returned to the hotel to make use of the spa. The pool was much smaller than the photos suggest. There were four couples in it, and that was plenty. It did have jets and a shower like feature. We were as far away from the shower feature as we could be, but when someone was under it, I found that I was getting pretty splashed. They had some lounge chairs facing the pool. There was a room that was standard temperature, with heated rocks that you sit on. It would have been nice if there would have been towels available. We looked for the hot tubs, but they weren't anywhere to be found. Apparently they are up on the roof. We went up there, and they weren't in operation. Would have been nice if they would have mentioned that. The hotel lobby is gorgeous and it's a quick walk to the train station, but would probably not stay there again because of our experience. Honestly, things happen to rooms. I wasn't mad about the door not working, but felt like they could have tried to make it up to us a bit, and then when the second room was full of smoke smell, I was apparently to blame for being ridiculous or expecting too much.

Yelp
The room and location was great... an easy walk from the Genova Piazza Principe station. The style of the hotel and room was beautiful with an amazing breakfast in the morning. The elevator was shaky but other than that it was a great place to stay in Genoa.

Yelp
After my first night here, I agree with the previous reviews. Very comfortable, not over-priced, good location, fine dining, friendly helpful staff. Highly recommended.

Nicole B.

Yelp
Originally booked a room at hotel continental, and like the reviewer below got a free "upgrade" to Hotel Savoia. The room was nicely decorated, had a comfy bed, a good sized TV with channels in most major languages (English, French, Arabic, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Italian, etc.) and free WiFi (with no annoying passwords). The room was a little smaller than I'd expect with an upgrade, and we didn't have a bathtub, but overall pretty good for the price. My biggest complaint was that the receptionist boasted about their rooftop jacuzzi, only to find that they weren't working (or in operation) after we got all geared up in our swimming outfits after a long day of walking. How dissapointing! The views were awesome, but you really shouldn't advertise a jacuzzi if you aren't gunna put water in it. Kinda misses the boat there. But despite the European sized room and waterless Jacuzzis, this is a pretty nice hotel for your money in a great location (less than a minute from the train station, and a short walk to downtown and the harbor). I'd stay here again, but I'd bring a bottle of chianti to the rooftop instead of a towel and bikini.

Yelp
Very nice five star hotel in Genoa. Great location, close to the train station (50 yards,), which makes it very convenient, as there is also a taxi stop and many buses that pass by and stop there. Also very close to the port area and historic center of the city. Walking distance to many of the tourist attractions. The staff is very nice and polite. I had a room in the second floor and it was nice and quiet. Excellent nightly rate for a five star hotel, even lower if you book without breakfast (there are many cafes nearby). I would definitely stay here again.

Mary M.

Yelp
Loved my stay here as a guest of the TBE#12 conference. The hotel was lovely with lots of public rooms to read, work, meet with friends, have a drink. I love the newspapers that are available in the bar. Breakfast buffet was fabulous. All the staff were wonderful and very helpful. Loved my room, esp the chaise lounge. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat! Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Yelp
very good location, close to the cruise harbour and to the city center. old fashion style, not the best for me but probably one of the best in genoa. nice spa, very quiet. suites very comfortable and whirpool in the bathroom. the area is not the best one, very close to central station and some noisy, but not too much.
