I Stayed in a Tiny Home Cabin With My Mom — and It Brought Us Closer Than I Expected

"Located just outside the town of Catskill, this cluster of Getaway House cabins, as with the rest of the company's tiny homes and campgrounds, is just remote enough to feel like a true escape. The cabins are, unsurprisingly, quite small (between 140 to 200 square feet). Ours featured two queen-size bunk beds (although one queen bed is also available), a table and chairs, a kitchenette, and a bathroom, with just enough room for two people to stand." - Travel + Leisure Editors

We had such a great experience! The snow was completely unexpected but honestly made the whole getaway feel even more magical. The only time I got a little scared was at night when the deer were running around, and the bathroom window didn’t lock, so it definitely needs to be fixed. But overall, we loved our stay.

I just got back from a stay at Postcard Cabins in the eastern Catskills and it was exactly the kind of peaceful reset I needed. The cabin was spotless, cozy, and had all the little details handled so I could just relax and enjoy the mountains. The view from the deck alone made the trip worth it. I want to specifically mention Lee Strock. He’s the reason this stay came together as smoothly as it did. It’s rare to find someone who genuinely listens and handles things with the level of attention he did. I’ve stayed at other places with “okay” customer service, but Lee made me feel like my trip actually mattered. Postcard Cabins is lucky to have him and I hope they realize it. I’m already planning my next visit. JH

Had the best time at the postcard cabins. It was such a dream. The hosts are wonderful and the cute little smores set and other amenities made us feel so welcome. It was quiet and safe especially perfect for someone like me that wants to try camping but it afraid of the wilderness. Thanks so much to the team. One thing I wish it had is a larger mirror maybe on the bathroom door or something but otherwise everything was perfect.

Yechan C.

Google
Thanks to Lee and his team, we experienced some of the best hospitality we’ve found in the US. He went out of his way to make our stay comfortable and cozy, which we especially appreciated as we were traveling with a one-year-old. Lee was very responsive and ensured the whole experience was seamless. The only minor note is that the mattress was on the lower-quality side, but it wasn't a major issue. We would definitely come back

This was our first time staying with Postcard Cabins, and it was everything I expected and more! My boyfriend and I drove up from PA for a surprise birthday trip, and my boyfriend had no clue where we were going. The moment we pulled up he was in awe and eternally grateful to see the cabins are fitted with A/C. I was immediately impressed with the warm ambiance of the strung Edison light bulbs, hanging above our picnic table, as well as the cozy fire pit and hammock nearby. They were exactly the intimate touches I wanted and worth the extra money. It was so thoughtful how the hammock was flipped over, so it wouldn’t get covered in falling debris. Self checkin was effortless, especially since the door code was my birthday! Not sure if that was coincidence or by design, but either way it was effortless. The moment we entered the cabin, my boyfriend was instantly blown away. His reaction was reminiscent of a child at Christmas commenting, “This is awesome!” Immediately we were taken with a spectacular grand window looking out at nature, fluffy queen size bed, free Wi-Fi, the small kitchen stacked with all the plates, pans and instruments one might need, including complementary hot chocolate, coffee, and a pack of the most delicious s’more’s I’ve ever tasted! There’s even a thoughtful little prepackaged sponge with dish soap above the sink, and below the sink was a giant roll of foil, small dustpan and broom, an extra paper towels. In the bathroom, we were impressed by the Kohler toilet, stainless steel shower fitted with body wash, shampoo, and conditioner, as well as extra towels, so don’t bring your own. Upon checking out, I accidentally turned on the heat, and the cabin warmed up nicely in seconds. This cabin would make for an amazing winter vacation as well. If you plan on driving to nearby Kaaterskill Falls, it’s a bit of a drive but well worth it! When we drove there the first parking lot was full, but if you continue driving down the road, there’s a second parking lot called Scutt available. From there you can take a hiking trail to view the colossal Kaaterskill Falls. You may be left sweating from the hike, but the sensational views and cool breeze will be worth it. If you’re feeling extra daring, you can bring your bathing suit and go for a dip in the pool at the bottom of the falls. Through Postcard Cabins, everything was so thoughtfully planned out to the tiniest detail, and it really makes for a turn-key vacation. All you really need to bring are a change of clothes, because there’s even a well stocked grocery store nine minutes away. And if you have any questions, a customer service representative is in constant communication with you via text or call. Our representative Lee, was most helpful in assisting us with our quality and complimentary fire wood! All in all, we would highly recommend Postcard Cabins, and I’m already planning next years return trip!

Google
Was super cosy and comfortable, located in a great area. The nature sounds are beautiful and the cabins are all spaced out so smartly, to the extent you feel like you’re alone in the woods. Really do recommend! Didn’t receive the code to access the cabin and then getting hold of anyone to get it on the day was tricky. There’s not quite enough hot water for two people to shower either - kept having to turn off the water as I shampooed etc!

Google
Lovely stay at the cabin. The stay was so recharging and fun. The cabin’s mattress was comfortable, the view was peaceful, the cabin was clean and the attention to detail was on point. I loved the fire-pit and outdoor seating. There are a lot more cabins in the area, but they are within reasonable distance. Looking forward to coming back!

Google
What an amazing experience. We booked a cabin last minute without much expectations, but we were so thrilled with our choice! The cabins are well equipped, clean, comfortable, and super cozy. They're strategically placed throughout the property so you feel like you are completely alone in the wilderness. The firewood for the campfire was also a really nice touch. Highly recommend opting for the suite option as the outside lounge areas make a big difference in the overall experience. An amazing option if you're looking to get away from the hustle and bustle to reconnect with a partner and to enjoy the outdoors. The view from the giant window in the morning is magical. Also highly recommend going to the nearby falls/hike. Can't wait to return!

Yelp
Wow, what a time! I am a true city/suburban girl at heart so when my husband said he wanted to go camping for his 30th birthday, I compromised by surprising him with a cabin "Getaway." We honestly weren't sure what to expect, especially because we were bringing our 80 pound Doberman. We ran a bit behind so we arrived a little late but the campground was so serene and quiet and we were pleasantly surprised to see that the bed was definitely large enough to fit all 3 of us. The kitchen came fully stocked with all the supplies we needed to cook the food we packed, but having a grocery store only 6 minutes away was so helpful when we realized we forgot a few minor things. We had access to WiFi the whole time and never lost connection. My husband was surprised at how fast the WiFi was since we both had to take a few work calls during the day. You can definitely see your neighbors but they are somewhat far enough away that it won't be a bother, unless they have a loud dog. Overall, we had an amazing time and we were able to do some golfing at Island Green and get a hike in to see Kaaterskills falls. We'll definitely check out another Getaway location!

Yelp
Part of Marriott so disturbing that they placed charges on my credit card and never provided a folio explanation. Management then apologized and gave me 500 points equivalent to $3 but never reversed the charges or provided me with folio.

Yelp
I wanted so badly for this to be an amazing experience. I've been eyeing this type of trip for years, from before they were acquired by Marriot. I finally booked a 3 night trip. We drove up and everything was very clear. I got to the assigned cabin, but somebody was there. So I called the front desk and told them and they gave me a different cabin. No biggie. It was a better location! Had a wonderful evening and morning there. These cabins are all of the good things about camping without the hard things. We went hiking the next day for about 2.5 hours. When I returned, there was a car in front of the cabin and all of my possessions were missing. I assumed I went to the wrong cabin. I didn't. I knocked on the door. The lady opened the door and was cleaning the cabin. I told her I was staying there. Apparently the lady who moved my cabin the night before didn't put the information into the computer so this cabin was double booked. the lady told me they could give me a different cabin. No biggie. I just asked for my stuff. The young guy that was asked to clean out the cabin took out all of my clothing items and put them into lost and found. However, he took all of my other items (cooler, food, drinks, chargers, camping chair, dog leads, etc). He was asked to return my items. He did. But the non clothing items that he returned were only the items he didn't want to keep. My books, journal, apple Watch charger, an expensive dog toy food, etc. were thrown away. Also, my daily vitamins and medicine were also thrown away. I opted to leave that day. I filed a complaint with Marriot. They simply gave me a refund for my stay (that's the minimum!) and closed my case. I called again to say that I wasn't very satisfied with the resolution. I don't want any money - this was rather egregious. I would like to know that action is being taken so it doesn't happen to any other visitors.

Jessica C.

Yelp
Very disappointed. We traveled 2 hours to the Eastern Catskills on a Friday night after work. On arrival, we noticed dirty hand prints all over the big window. The first thing we did was wash the windows. Our check-in time was pushed back an hour we assumed for cleaning and we arrived to this. The next day, we learned that there were 12-18 inches of snow expected on Sunday. Due to the dangerous weather conditions, we had to cut our stay short by 1 night. I reached out to management to ask about some type of partial credit or discount for a future stay. They lacked sympathy and their customer service was terrible. We paid a ton of money for 2 nights and will not be returning in the future.

Yelp
I don't get all the reviews that complain. This is as close to glamping as you can get. Hot water issues? It's a portable trailer with a portable hot water unit. How long do you expect the hot water to flow for!? People complaining it's tiny??? It's a tiny trailer! You have a bed, sheets, linens, a bathroom with walk in shower, flushable toilet, two hot plates to cook on and you have complaints?! Camping is not for you!!! People. If you like camping but your girlfriend/boyfriend/partner does not this is as close to glamping as you'll get. Everything is provided for you. All you need to bring are the essentials, clothing, food, heck not even soap or shampoo are needed. They're provided. Even fire wood, fire starters, a s'mores kit and sticks to roast them. Come on people!!!

Jin K.

Yelp
Amazing! I read some review that there are so many bugs like spiders, files and ants. But there aren't! I stayed at cabin 'saleem' and it was so clean and cozy. Everything was pefect!

Audrea L.

Yelp
Great place to unplug and relax.Vvery kind and helpful staff.Clean rooms. You get two chairs and a fire ring with a grate on top to cook on.The place is beautiful

Yelp
I understand that this review is because of a bad experience with extenuating circumstances. My sister and I booked the Postcard Cabins in Hocking Hills/Nelsonville, OH. She injured her back about 2.5 days before the check in time. I was only able to email them as there is no phone number. We were flatly refused the ability to reschedule or get any kind of refund. It was too close to the date for me to ask anyone else. I'm sure it would have been fun --- but this lack of customer care is just not acceptable. I won't ever book with them and I will tell anyone that it is just not worth the risk to book with them. Anyone could have an illness, accident or injury and no one can afford to just throw the cost of this cabin away. They just don't care.

Yelp
It's in a name Getaway .... Perfect getaway ! If you're wanting to go on a mini Getaway and an affordable place , this is the perfect place to be! Come and book on Getaway !

Yelp
I would recommend this to anyone that is truly looking for a getaway! I loved it so much that i have been twice. Their CT location and Eastern Catskills. I personally liked the CT location better but i am looking forward to trying out their different locations around the country. The ambiance there was so serene, quiet and very private. Great for couples, friends, family and even a solo trip. The cabins have everything you would need from kitchen supplies, games, a cell phone lock box, wood/ fire starter and a s'mores kit. What i also liked is that the cabins aren't too close to each other so it does provide more privacy. I also felt very safe there and they also provide a phone incase you don't have service and need to contact customer service.

Yelp
This is unique experience if you want to camp but with more comforts. It's like a tiny cabin. It has everything you need to have a comfortable experience. Stove top, sink, Cooking utensils, bathroom, and shower. They provide wood for cheap. My only complaint would be the AC didn't keep it as cool as I'd like since it wasn't quite cold enough outside to leave the windows open. We brought our dog too. They added a dog bowl, treats and poop bags; which was a nice touch.
google avatar

Noshin A.

Yelp
Truly a different kind of experience. This cabin is ISOLATED. The only sound you'll hear is your own breathing- it is frighteningly refreshing. The view is splendid. All the utensils are neat and the cabin contains all the essentials. The s'mores and fire are unique- not possible at your regular hotel stay. The cabin is very warm- we enjoyed the stay very much. The sustenance box is good as well- recommend!!

Carol L.

Yelp
We had such a magical experience at Catskills West! We went in late December, which we though was going to be too cold and uncomfortable. However, it was the exact opposite. The drive in was mildly snowy, but we might've caught a good day when there wasn't any snow actively falling while we were driving. The heater they provide inside is more than enough warmth to warm up the 200 sq ft cabin. The bed is comfortable, the linens/showers/surfaces are clean, and the smores pack is a nice touch. The stove works fine, and the old timey radio is cute (and also has blue tooth so you can play your own tunes). The window is absolutely beautiful, and I loved waking up and looking at the snowy trees around us. Getaway thought of everything, and we had no complaints with our stay here. We can't wait to see what all four seasons are like here and in other locations of Getaway!

Yelp
I came here with my small son for just an overnight getaway. I was really excited because I saw such beautiful pictures online and heard amazing things about getaway house. After staying at the getaway house I have mixed feelings. I'll start with the positive stuff: The staff is really communicative even days before your trip. You get text message updates about your cabin and you can reply back to the text messages with any questions, concerns, and needs that you have before and during your stay. The person sending the text was really responsive and got back to me right away. The cabin itself is pretty clean. And it has all your basic needs. My absolute favorite part was having our own fire pit. And they even give you a S'mores Kit, although I recommend bringing extra marshmallows, chocolate and Graham crackers. They also have the wood and fire starters for you for a small extra fee. Also had someone who has never started a fire in a fire pit before, when I text for instructions they gave me an article with step-by-step instructions that were really easy to follow to start a fire in the fire pit. They do warn you that you're not going to have service while there on your phone but I actually had service where I was, and was able to tether my Wi-Fi to watch a movie with my son before bed. My son had an absolute blast! Now for the negative stuff: When I first walked in, although I knew it was tiny, I was really surprised on how tiny the cabin actually is. When I walked in I realized why all the pictures on Instagram are taken in the bed near the big window. The best part of the cabin, the rest of the cabin is small and nice but nothing to write home about. The first thing I noticed when walking in was the pretty strong wood smell inside the cabin, which makes sense because the entire inside of the cabin is made of wood, but it surprised me and I think mixed with the fact that I haven't eaten much earlier in the day the smell with giving me a headache (the best way to describe the smell is the wood section of a homedepot). But after I ate something and was in the cabin for a while I got used to it and I didn't notice it anymore. Also the cabins are pretty close to each other. I had a cabin next to mine, I'm thankful that the one that I had all the windows were facing the woods and my fireplace was away from everyone too (I was the last cabin) so I had more privacy and never had to look at my neighbor's but the cabin next to me one of their windows with staring at the back of our cabin and any time I had to walk the 30ft or whatever back to my car I had to pass by thier fire pit area. The last thing was the shower, it's a nice size, clean and I LOVE this soap and hair products, but the hot water is limited. I gave my son a less than 5 minutes shower and then I went in right after for less than 10 minutes, and before my shower was done the water became cold. So if you like hot showers you have to be pretty quick or be the first person in the shower. All in all, I had a good experience and I think it's definitely something that you should experience at least once. I don't think I would stay there longer than one or two nights. I think after I have experienced it that it might be a while before I go again but I'm glad that I got to do it this time! And again I really loved the fire pit area!
google avatar

Jason R.

Yelp
If you ever need a place to unplug and getaway for a bit, this is the perfect place to do so. No TVs in this place as it's you and outdoor life. Fire pit and essentials to start a fire are also included. Only thing I would change is that a sink should be placed in the bathroom. There is a kitchen sink in the trailer, but that's the only sink in the entire place. Other than that it's a great place to unplug and to unwind and relax.
google avatar

Yeon S.

Yelp
Check-in starts at 3pm and check-out is by 11am. I wish check ins started earlier. I stayed for one night and it was generally pretty easy stay and convenient camping experience with everything available. The shower, sink, kitchenware, fridge etc. The cabin was maintained pretty well- and clean. However, I had to take 2 stars off due to sleep situation. I did not get a good sleep at all. This goes the same for my husband as well. We both rarely slept. We tried to sleep and there were so many little flies attacking our face all night that we would wake up every half hour or so. It was really bad- I honestly don't understand what the solution is to fix this- I camped out in a tent before and this never happened. I had to share because otherwise the management would never know. Other than that it's such a nice little cabin and great spots for photos!

Emma L.

Yelp
So disappointed in getaway house, after being there a few times. We had to cancel our trip and apparently our credits expire so wen trying to book another trip for this year they told me that my 450 dollars worth of credits is no longer there and they cannot reinstate them. to me that is just taking someones money, amazing place to go but they don't care if about their customers.

Yelp
I've been getting ads for Getaway for years now. I'm not a big camping person, but my partner is, and Getaway seemed like the perfect middle ground. Turns out, they're super popular! I've been trying for years to book a weekend spot and finally struck gold this summer. One of the only highlights of 2020 tbh. After being stuck in our NYC studio apartment for 7 months we were desperate to disconnect and spend some time in nature. One of the reasons we chose Getaway is their safety precautions. This felt like the safest option given the distance between cabins and the virtual check-in process. We were able to rent a car, drive upstate, and get some much-needed relaxation without putting others at risk. The cabins themselves are efficiency units with all of the bells and whistles. Something in particular we loved was not having to lug a bunch of cooking gear with us. This includes your standard non-stick pan, pot, tea kettle, and cooking utensils. I do recommend bringing a spatula though if you plan on making breakfast. In terms of comfortability, this was an easy A+. My number one priority is always finding a comfy bed and this fits the bill. Plus, how can you not love the wall-sized windows? We loved our stay here and wouldn't hesitate to book again. The price is totally worth it.
google avatar

Ali K.

Yelp
We just finished a trip here. It was so refreshing, relaxing, and rejuvenating. The cabins are so cute, clean, and needs. They provide absolutely everything you could possibly need in the nature. The fire pit was a really nice touch as well. Customer service was also fantastic, as Toni trout Really helped us out.

Yelp
Literally the best camping experience ever. Or should I say glamping! What a great time. The cabins are so cute, homey, and literally have everything you need. The staff is great and accommodating. We had no problems whatsoever. Our kids loved it, we loved it!!! We will definitely be going back.

Yelp
Booked a night at Getaway in the Catskills and I was so happy I did! It was not only beautiful, clean and spacious, but so relaxing! It was just what we needed to get away from the city! We brought our dog along for an extra fee, well worth it! Highly recommend! We will be booking again!!!!! 5 stars!

Yelp
This is the best little getaway I've ever had. My bf and I had a great time relaxing and enjoying ourselves. The cabin was in prestine condition everything was super clean and the bed was very comfy. We had everything we needed to cook our meals and the cabin had good running water and hot water. The only thing I didnt like is that they didn't have olive oil in the cabin like they said they would and by the time we needed it, it was late. They also had the wrong name on the welcome letter. It said chunxci or something like that, which is not our name lol. But overall, it was very fun and relaxing. Would come back!

Pamela B.

Yelp
Getaway was exactly as cozy and relaxing as it seems in it's ads and pictures. The cabins are small but they're very thoughtfully configured and ours had everything we need. We read, listened to the radio, cooked and left feeling very refreshed. There is a Walmart, liquor store, hardware store and a cute town nearby. I highly recommend it.

Joni B.

Yelp
We stayed in the Eastern Catskill location. I was super excited for this "getaway" however was a bit let down upon arrival. In everything I read prior to our trip you were lead to believe that you "might" see your neighbors. There is no might, you will see them! At least at this location think campground with a little more spacing. No secluded as expected. And wifi? I thought that was one of your selling points? No service? Unplug? The tiny house was cute and well maintained. But the price for sure was not worth it. Pretty pricey for no seclusion. I will not return.

Yelp
Great weekend getaway from NYC. Everything is really well done, very clean, warm, cozy and lots of supplies here so you don't need to bring much at all. Very much a hotel room in the woods. Loved: - Smores kit they provided - Wood ready for fire ($6 a bag) - Great view from our cabin - Super comfy bed - Hiking trails just 25 mins drive away (we did the Marys Glen trail which was medium to challenging - about 4hrs walk) - Customer service was really responsive when we called them with a small issue in our cabin Improvement ideas: - Our cabin was about 50ft from another one. Although they didn't bother us, a bit more space would have been great. - Security gate at the front would be a good idea for extra safety (not that we saw anything untoward) - Would love to have been able to get "room service" with a local bakery/butcher with supplies/grill kit to deliver breakfast/food at our expense. Maybe even a reception/camp store would be a good idea to buy ice etc or talk to someone about what we could do on our trip/ local hiking trails. - More grilling and fire making tools would have been great (not sure if our were just missing but we had to use cooking utensils to make the fire - Our door was unlocked when we showed up, all was fine and our code worked to lock it These improvement ideas do not distract from how great our stay was. 5 starts all round, will be coming back for sure :)
